New to java / j2ee

Question

I just installed the j2ee kit. After tweaking the path setups and the variable J2EE_HOME and JAVA_HOME - as detailed in the installation instruction, I was able to resolve some problems that I had. But finally now I am stuck with the error message
"Fatal Error: This J2EE SDK release runs only on Java 2 <JDK1.2 or later>".
I have Java version 1.4.0_01.
Can some one throw some light on this?

I did check the environment variables. They point to the correct location of the installed files.
Is it that the J2EE server is losing the reference at some point to the recently installed version?
