New to jsp, need good book to read

hey all, other than the java pages, where would be some good info on properly setting a tomcat server and the j2ee sdk?
i will also be requiring a book to read about jsp, so if anyone can find anything good, please let me know.

Also you could go to
http://www.manning.com/catalog/index.php
and pick out an eBook for yourself at 1/3 the price of a hard copy.
I wouldn't reccomend reading through free introduction courses you download off the net, you'll be going back and forward and basically going no where. Pick your self 1 or 2 books off this site and your on yur way.

  • RFC: Good Book to read on security

Was wondering if anyone had any input on a good book to read on java security? I was looking at "Java Security, 2nd Ed" by Oaks. Wondering if anyone has an opinion on this book or another that may be more suited. I am looking for a solid foundation in security and then moving into more advanced topics in the later chapters.
    Thx,
    Rob

Read Applied Cryptography by Bruce Schneier first, then get a Java book to understand how to apply it.

  • Need good book for ...

I'm looking for a good book that talks about the structure of a database at the filesystem level. Information about which files are used to do what. Many beginner books I see try to explain databases from the inside while many advanced books are over my head technically based on my current knowledge of databases. I'm not trying to build/design one, just manipulate, backup, maintain one that's already there.

This "books" are good and free http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14220/toc.htm

  • New to JSP, need advice

Hello, I am familiar with Java and now am learning JSP.
I have convinced the management in my company to go with JSP and
Java instead of .NET. The fact that Java is more platform independent was the main reason for the choice of Java.
(1)Can anyone tell me if there are any limitations to JSP that I should know about? I have heard that JSP is slow, but I think this is not true, because I frequent this site, and speed does not seem to be an issue.(I heard that there are limitations on TomCat. I will be using TomCat on a XP professional system. I think the limitations had to do with the number of people accessing the server.
    (2) Are Java applets the equivalent of .NET forms?
    (3) Do you think I made a bad decision? Java seems to me like a pot of gold, it just seems to lack the Marketing that Microsoft has.

    (1) Slow compared to what? I'll bet network latency makes it a wash.
Any server has a limit on the number of simultaneous requests it can handle. Depends on the type of request, how long-lived a session is, how many objects have to be held onto, etc. It's not a blanket, always-true statement. Disregard that.
I'd pay more attention to worries about memory leaks in Tomcat. I heard that the Jetty JSP engine had some once, but I'm not sure whether or not it's been resolved.
    (2) I don't know .NET forms, but applets aren't important anymore IMO. Forget about applets. I'm thinking that .NET forms are ASPs, which are analogous to JSPs. I'll take correction here.
    (3) Pot of gold? That disappeared with the Internet bubble. I think it's good technology, though.

  • New To Motion Good Book

Hello, I am pretty new to Motion. What is a good book to read to explain some of the process? What would you all recommend?
Thanks for all of your help.

There are three Motion books on the market, you can see links to them here:
    http://www.applemotion.net
I did write one of them, but they are all good - Mary's is a good intro, Damian's goes deeper, and they are both project-based, meaning they are meant to be worked through with the accompanying DVD of project files and media. Mine is more of a reference guide when you get stuck.
There are also several very good DVDs, check that link as well.

  • What's a good book which includes Tiger terminal commands?

Such as those settings not available via the regular GUI (one example - how to force Safari to open links in a new tab automatically instead of a new window - I found the answer to this already btw but I'm sure there are lots more things that I don't know about). I'd like something with a bit more depth than most books I see on the shelf, which only seem to cover the basic GUI stuff and a few very very basic unix commands (which are not specific to OS X anyway).
I know I could look things up here, but I like a good book to read too

    Hi Jonathan
If there is an O'Reilly book on the shelf, grab it. They're the best in my opinion.
    http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/ltigerunix/index.html
    provides an excellent start.
    http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/macxtigerunix/index.html
is an ultimate reference, very comprehensive.
    http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/mactigerian/index.html
concentrates on the BSD Unix Layer of Mac OS X.
    http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/macxtigermm/index.html
is probably not what you want, but it is very useful to someone who wants to get in-depth information using the GUI.
    Not O'Reilly:

all about your beloved Mac OS X kernel. Very technical. By Amit Singh.

  • Made The Switch!  Any Good Books To Help A PC Vet?

Anyone know of any good books to read up on to get used to the Mac? Ive been a pc guy forever and would like a "guide" to ease me into the Mac lifestyle.

Yes I would recommend getting Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard: Peachpit Learning Series (Paperback)
by Robin Williams. Amazon is currently selling it and I'm sure you can find it on e Bay too. The link to Amazon is here.
Also the links that were provided are excellent and a great starting place.
I bought her Leopard book a couple of years ago and found it invaluable when I was making the switch.

  • Any good books on web application using JSP/servlet?

Does anyone know good books on how-to build enterprise web application using JSP/servlet? Aside from the book "Head First JSP/Servlet". Development using Netbeans is more preferrable.

    801264 wrote:
What about the free web server? JBoss or Glassfish or something else? I prefer web/application server that is fully compatible with JEE6 (unlike Tomcat that can't handle EJB). thanksI'm a JBoss user myself, so naturally I would advise that to you if I were ignorant. I'm not however, so in stead I'll tell you to investigate yourself and see which one you prefer. Nobody is going to tell you which one to use as there is no such thing as a 'better' or 'best' server. Just different servers each with different issues.
And the community edition of JBoss has had many issues in the past (because Red Hat of course wants to advise you to go to the enterprise platform which ain't cheap), but JBoss 5.1 was a rock solid piece of software that I have had zero problems with (after reading the odd forum or two). JBoss 6 builds on top of JBoss 5.1 and provides the full JEE6 web profile; this means it does NOT provide a certified 'full' JEE6 stack yet. This means nothing however as all the services you may need in an enterprise application are already there.
BTW: for simple servlet programming, don't neglect Apache Tomcat. Its a lightweight server that just works.

I'm already very familiar with photoshop, illustator, and indesign and have been using them for years.  I'm now looking to start learing web design and need suggestions on a good book or books that aren't just about dreamweaver or fireworks, but rather something covering the intergration of applications as well as the basics. Her post itself is also worth reading, as always.

when I use voice over to read an epub in my Ibooks app, which is in Dutch, sometimes he start reading a book with an English Female voice and some books he reads with the Dutch male voice (which is good). All my epubs are Dutch books so the English voice sound terrible trying to pronounce Dutch. Can i fix this problem? Thanks, Tom

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • In Hongkong. I want to buy new iMac, But need to sell old one first. Where is good for sell??

    Please help me.
    Please give me a suggestion.
I want to buy new iMac, but need to sell old one.
    About following the info.
How much can sell and where is good for sell?
Processor  2.93 GHz Intel Core i7
    Total Number of Cores:          4
    Processor Interconnect Speed: 4.8 GT/s
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)
    1TB harddisk
    Warranty to 02/Aug/2013
    Thank you for your help.

When you sell your iMac, please remember that if you bought Mountain Lion upgrade at the app store, the license is not transferable and you need to erase the drive and reinstall the original system (which was most likely Snow Leopard?). If you don't do that, the buyer can never reinstall Mountain Lion because the license is tied to your Apple ID forever.

  • Good book for JSP

    Hi all
Can u pls just me a good book for JSP especially for beginners other than "Core Servlets and JSP" by HALL .The customers review for this book in amazon.com is very poor .Pls help me.
    Thanx in advance.Bye

When I went to Amazon to look at the reviews I saw that Hall's book got 4.5/5.0 stars based on 217 reviews.
Three reviews are listed in detail, and two of those are negative, so I can see where the OP got his negative view of this book.
But all 214 of the others couldn't ALL be wrong, could they?
I have "Core Servlets" and "More Core Servlets", and I think both are very good. If the OP is a newcomer to servlets and JSPs, I know these will be a good enough introduction.
These books do suffer from the same problem that a lot of computer books do: advancing standards. JSP and JSTL have moved on since Marty Hall wrote these books, so he's not always 100% up to date. But the basic information is well done.
If the OP still objects to Hall's texts, I'd recommend getting a servlet/JSP book that discusses the latest standard, if possible.
Jason Hunter's O'Reilly book is also good, in my view. - MOD

Colin Moock is a top choice. His Essential ActionScript 3.0
    isn't
coming out until June, but he did have an AS3 pocket
    reference from O'Reilly
already. Oddly, this book no longer seems to be available on
    Amazon, but if
you search the ISBN number online, you'll find a number of
    people still
    selling this book.
