New to Leopard and wondering why there is disk activity every hour

Time machine and synch are turned off - but every hour the Mac wakes from sleep, does something unknown, and then goes back to sleep again.
Any idea what it could be doing every hour (on the hour)? It never happened in Tiger.

Thanks for that tip. iCal Helper was the culprit, and now I am looking into ways to turn it off. I never use iCal and don't need this hourly activity (it wakes up my pet budgie, who sleeps near the Mini!).

Yes, many know what this means.  You can too.  Just type in "error 1004" in the search box at the top of this page.  Or, just look to the right.  You'll find many links in the "More Like This" box.
Always good forum etiquette to search for previous posts on the topic before posting.

If this isn't just another spam post, all Adobe programs have a 30 day trial of the full version available at:
    http://www.adobe.com/downloads.html
If you want to purchase them after the trial period ends, all you do is buy a subscription through Adobe at:
    https://creative.adobe.com/plans
And then log into the programs you already have with the Adobe Id you used to purchase the subscription.
There is no free/lite version of DW, but there are other free editors out there like:

I recently had a shuffle stolen and wondered if there was any way apple can trace it if someone else tries to sync or use the ipod?

No, manufacturers generally do not track people's stolen property. The shuffle has no means to connect to the Internet so you can't track it yourself. Thankfully it's only $49.

  • I used to be able to burn photos onto a CD-R disc. Now I insert a new, blank disc and am told there is insufficient spac available for my selected year of photos. Even when reducing the date to ONE photo, I still get the same message. Confused.

I used to be able to burn a selection of photos from my iPhoto library onto a CD-R disc. Today I inserted a new blank disc and was shown a message that there was insufficient space for my chosen year of photos. Even when I reduced the date to include only ONE photo!- the message was the same. I am at a loss as to why, and what to do. My iMac is about 7 years old and upgraded to Snow leopard. Any bright ideas?

When burning a CD-R, the OS first creates a 'shadow' disk image that replicates what the CD will look like, then it copies that data to the CD-R itself. Therefore you need enough free space on your internal drive to create this temporary image. If your internal hard drive is full you won't be able to create the shadow, and that could be what you're seeing.
If the OP's disk is too full to permit the creation of a 700MB disk image, it's a wonder that the computer is functioning.

  • New macbook, Leopard and iLife 08 but iMovie crashes at launch

    Hi everyone,
I just purchased a new Macbook with Leopard, iLife 08 etc - works like a dream. No problems networking or running applications - except for iMovie.
Out of the box iMovie has never worked on my Macbook. It launches and shows the initial screen - then I get the spinning beachball of death for 30 seconds - then the application crashes.
All other iLife applications run fine.
This is a new virgin Macbook (no 3rd party applications except for MS Office) loaded - do you have any suggestions on what I can do?
Can I re-install just iMovie 8 from the DVD's that came with the Macbook or do I have to reinstall the whole system.
    cheers
    steve

You can sell the copy of Leopard and the copy of iLife you bought at retail. No issue there.
You CANNOT sell the "restore media" that came with your replacement MacBook Pro. That software is intended to be used only on the machine it shipped with. It won't install on any other hardware than a machine identical to the one it shipped with (down to the specific model #).

  • Installed Aperture with new Snow Leopard and it won't open

I just got Aperture 2.0 and it installed fine but when I tried to open the application, its says it does not work with this version of Leopard. Is there a fix for this?

    ScharadL wrote:
So essentially, you'd have to purchase the 2.14 update from the mac store?
No. He's saying he used the serial number that came with 2.x when he bought it, and it will work with the 2.14 download.
There seems to be a catch 22: Aperture 2.1 won't work with Snow Leopard, and the 2.14 update won't work because it can't find 2.1. The work around Daniel found is to download the 2.14 trial then authorize it with the 2.1 serial number.
See if it works for you ,and let us know.

  • New Hard drive and no original OS install disks to hand.

    Hi,
Just installed a new WD hard drive after my original HD died after 2 and a half years of use, unfortunately I do not have my Tiger disks to hand. Do I have to buy the full Snow Leopard Box Set to install with no previous OS system or could the SL upgrade work? I am not really interested in iWork etc. Thank you.

you need to buy the box set. another option is to buy leopard and a snow leopard upgrade disk. also, you can call apple and request a replacement Tiger disk. they will provide one for a nominal fee.

  • Trying to recover deleted imessages, also wondering why there is only 1 back up after weekly syncs.

    Hi All,
I am trying to recover deleted imessages from my iphone 5s .  I planned to restore the phone to a previous back up,  however,  I am only showing one back up in Jan 2014 and another in Dec. 2014, with nothing in between.  I can't understand this as I sync my phone at least once a week.
I have tried Dr. Fone (Wondershare) on trial basis but it only seems to pull up a few messages, not all.  I tried the trial of Tenorshare and it pulled up nothing except media files.
I have tried to look in my computer Library for back ups but nothing shows there, no 'messages' folder or other imessage back up archive.
I am on a MacBook pro 10.7.5  Lion

You see the backups in iTunes->Preferences->Devices.
The "sync" backups overwrite everytime. You can have an extra backup when you do not a "sync" but click the button "Backup now" (a new backup is made which will be overwritten when you do this again). That backup (with date) will appear next to the "sync" backup. There are two backups in total possible.

  • New to mac and wondering...

    Hi everone,
I am trying to become a convert. Tell me what iam missing!!!
I am new to mac. It is the choice of my superisor. And after 5 weeks of using my iBook, i am wondering what all the hype is about. I have been using computers for 20 years. I started with a TI 99/4A - remember it? I am a PC user, so maybe what i am experiencing is transition blues. However, I have had trouble running software written in java on the machine- no trouble on the pc. And yes I do need the software, it is an integral part of my teaching- these are physics applets (physlets).
I find several things frustrating and again perhaps it is that transition thing again. But for the life of me i do not see what all the hype is about. I really do find my pc easier to use and friendlier.

"I don't think Carl is using a Web browser. These are stand-alone Java applications. They're not accessed via the Web, you download them to your computer..."
If they're applets, then they're not stand-alone applications. The site says, "Physlets run on the Mac using OS X Panther and the Safari browser."
    Ref: webphysics - Applets
On the associated Java 1.1 page, it says, "Physlets require not only a Java enabled browser, but also JavaScript to Java applet communication." This is an area in which Safari is still struggling, and I think the "real" issue is the JavaScript (not Java) "Animator" code surrounding the applets. (Note: This page also verifies that Physlets use Java 1.1, which is now fairly ancient. Upgrading to 1.5 should definitely not be necessary.)
I found the download page of jar (Java Archive) files, but the ones I tried are not executable as stand-alones -- even on a Windows machine. It appears that these jars are being offered as applets to be incorporated into web pages.

  • I have a 5th generation ipod classic, it wont connect to my computer without freezing itunes, and wondering if there is a way to manually update software

When i connect my ipod to the computer it freezes not only itunes but google chrome as well. I dont know that it is recognized as an ipod. I think it only recognizes it as a mass storage device and because of this i can not update the software to 1.3 and also have the ability to restore it. Im wondering if it is possible to do a manually software update without itunes or restore/reformat.

I'm not sure if my case is 100% related but it may help. I had this happen to me after I installed a new hard drive on my computer. The iPod would show up as an external disc drive but not on iTunes. What happened was, while reformating the diskdrive  the system resorted the hard drives to be the B and C drives. This then made the iPod the A drive and itunes didn't recognize it.  I went in and changed it to another letter (K or L or something) and iTunes picked it up and synched it automatically.
    Hope that's of some help.

  • How do I "Move" in the new Numbers? And also is there still a "Categorize" in the new Numbers?

I have noticed some unwelcome changes in the new Numbers. For instance, how do I change document margins, "move" cells that contain formulas that I want to retain, and "Categorize" data in a table?

    Hi cinderjohn,
Margins - no longer there.  Numbers 3.0 is not printing oriented.
Categorize - no longer there. But you can achieve similar via SUMIFS and COUNTIFS in a summary table.
    Move - that's still there.
For more information on these and other changes see the features gained, features lost, and workarounds threads.
Your old Numbers 2.3 is still on your Mac in a subfolder within Applications called iWork '09 or similar. You can use both versions at the same time.

  • New to apple and wondering if using keynote is easier than power point.

    Hello all,
I have only been using os x for about 6 months, and I was wondering if using keynote is easier than power point? I am in school so I need to know if keynote will save in ppt format. The school that I go to only uses MS office 97 to 2004 format for all docs and power points. Is using keynote that much different?

i find keynote MUCH easier in almost all areas. it did take me a little learning in the beginning. the main thing to know is that apple uses a floating pallet call "inspector" to control just about all the details of the presentation. they also have a "formatting bar" which is conceptually similar to the formatting bars microsoft uses in the previous versions of office (font size, etc...).
the basic entry for slides is the same, where one just types into the fields on the slides. what i find much better is the control i have in the "inspector" to fine tune anything. i've gotten completely dependent on keynotes "staging" which is how one makes the slides animate. if i have a series of bullets and a diagram, i use the staging to get the diagram to be revealed in stages and to get the bullets appear one at a time in sync with the diagram i'm explaining. nothing is more boring for an audience to have someone just stand up, thru up a slide with 100 words and read the text bullets.
i find keynote to be much easier to develop diagrams or to copy and paste in a PDF picture. then add the staging effects i need to develop the story to explain the diagram or picture. it does take a little learning how to do it the first couple times. but the interface is consistent and it's not hard to learn it.
the only aspect i find a little easier in powerpoint is the indenting style, which is controlled in one of the editing buttons in office 11 and before. keynote controls the indenting from the "inspector" instead of having a little button in the formatting bar. but in every other way, i find keynote to be MUCH easier to use. and it has other features that powerpoint doesn't have. plus iwork is very inexpensive compared to microsoft office. finally, if you are near an apple store, they have free seminars on iWork fairly often. the 1st time i used keynote, i went to the apple store workshop and got a few answers. just see how easy it is to get person to person help for microsoft office...
the only other game in town are the various releases of the open source programs, "open office" and "neo office". they are free, also read and write ppt files, but are a little harder to use than keynote and don't have as many features.
    anyway, that's my experience.
    good luck!
