New to Mac...From PC...

Hello! I am new to Mac and have always used a PC. I'm having a little bit of a tough time learning a new system. I bought the MacBook Pro and I am not sure I like the mouse on this thing. I can't figure out how to copy and paste with it. For instance, if I want to highlight a link, on a PC I'd just right click, copy and paste it. I'm having a hard time doing that with this mouse. I know it's clickable anywhere, but even if I right click in the lower right hand corner of it, it does not allow me to copy paste? Will I ever be able to do that again?
Also, I added Firefox to my mac simply because I like it a lot and know how to use it. The guy at the store said I didn't need virus protection on a mac but if I'm using firefox, don't I need it?
Where are the screensavers for mac? Don't they need one of those too??
Sorry for the newbie questions. I am just trying to decide if I really want to switch to a mac because I cannot figure out how to use it.
Advice,suggestions, help all appreciated.
Thanks!

1. Hello! I am new to Mac and have always used a PC.
A. Welcome to the dark side!
2. I'm having a little bit of a tough time learning a new system.
A. Do not fear young jedi, everything will "just make sense."
3. I bought the MacBook Pro and I am not sure I like the mouse on this thing.
A. Do yourself a favor and really get used to your new touchpad before you write it off. I find it to be the most productive input device i have ever used.
4. I can't figure out how to copy and paste with it.
A. Cut Copy and paste functions are all present in osx just hold "command" instead of "control" and use the same X, C and V keys or right click just like windows. (next answer)
5. For instance, if I want to highlight a link, on a PC I'd just right click, copy and paste it. I'm having a hard time doing that with this mouse.
A. Right click functionality is not enabled out of the box. I turn it on imediately when i start up a new mac. just click your apple, go to system preferences, touchpad: and turn on secondary click lower right. (I personally just enable two finger secondary click, i find it much faster.)
6. I know it's clickable anywhere, but even if I right click in the lower right hand corner of it, it does not allow me to copy paste?
A. You already turned it on in touchpad settings.
7. Will I ever be able to do that again?
A. You already did, it was that easy.
8. Also, I added Firefox to my mac simply because I like it a lot and know how to use it. The guy at the store said I didn't need virus protection on a mac but if I'm using firefox, don't I need it?
A. As a general rule of thumb you can only get something nasty if you agree to download AND install a suspicious app. The download manager supplied with osx will warn you if something you download "contains and application."
9. Where are the screensavers for mac? Don't they need one of those too??
A. Available through system preferences, desktops and screensavers. A screen saver is a huge waste of battery life on a laptop though, it burns up cpu power and there for battery running the math associated with the screen saver and keeps the lcd lit to show it too you. You should really be just setting the display to go to sleep instead showing a screen saver is the way to go.
Sorry for the newbie questions. I am just trying to decide if I really want to switch to a mac because I cannot figure out how to use it.
10. Advice,suggestions, help all appreciated.
A. One of the great things about owning a Mac is that the other great Mac users are here to help. Ask and Yee shall receive.

  • New to MAC from Windows...How to make list view the default global view

Hi Everyone...I know there are several posts already regarding this topic but I still cannot figure it out...I am brand new to Apple as I have used Windows based PC's for most of my life.
My question is...in Finder when I open a folder it displays all the contents in Icon view...which is not a very efficient way to display information.
Is there any way to make all folders (regardless of whether I have previously accessed them or not) display in LIST mode?
Please remember when posting your answer that I am new to MAC's...so please keep your answer in terms that a 5 year old could understand and implement . Thanks everyone...and I really like my new MacBook Pro laptop!!!

I had the same problem when I first used Mac OS X. I wanted to rezize the finder window and alter the view etc. What I did was open up a window and customize it exactly how I wanted it, then hit command-N to get a new window. Usually this turned out to be how it used to be, but sometimes (maybe if you just change one thing at a time with a single drag or click or something) then the new window would be the changed version. Then close the finder windows making sure your changed one is the last one you close.
This is by no means an exact science for doing this, but it seems to work occassionally just by fiddling around changing things then opening/closing windows.
Hope this helps in some way!

    Hello foxhoundsfg,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion forums!
"Mac OS X 10.3 Panther System Requirements"
"Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger System Requirements"
    "Leopard 10.5 System Requirements"
You cannot upgrade to Leopard 10.5 due to it needing at least an 867Mhz processor and above.
Tiger, which would be your best bet would have to be purchase via a reseller such as on ebay or similar. Just be sure to purchase Full Retail Install Disks which tend to sell for a premium these days from resellers. Make sure to not purchase machine specific or grey upgrade disks.
10.3.9 is the last point version of Panther 10.3.x. If you decide to stay with Panther 10.3.9 you might want to use a browser such as Camino 1.6.11 which is the last supported version of Camino for Panther 10.3.9. (make sure to scroll down and download the correct version of 1.6.11 for Panther 10.3.9) It works ok if you just wish to surf the web and email and light application use.
If you upgrade to Tiger 10.4.11 you will be able to use later versions of browsers including Safari.
I would suggest upgrading the RAM (memory) in the computer to at least 1GB if you are going to upgrade to Tiger 10.4. Even Panther 10.3.x's performance will benefit from upgrading the RAM.
The link "Software update, upgrade--what's the difference?" will help to explain the differences between updates and upgrades if you need clarification.
    hope this helps some,

  • I'm new to Mac and cannot figure out how to upload photo's from my iPhoto library to eBay for the purpose of selling. Can anyone help?

I'm a seller on eBay and very new to Mac. I just started to list an item when I got to the area of uploading  pictures of an item to my listing. I cannot figure out how this is done. I downloaded pictures from my camera to iPhoto and they apear not only in my iPhoto library but in an eBay folder/album I created. When I go to upload photos I cannot find my photos in either the Library or the eBay album. I've tried using both the basic uploader and and standard uploader choices provided by eBay.

While running iPhoto you'll need to select the pictures you want to use for eBay and then select Export from the File menu. The Export Dialog box has several options and I believe the second option is File Export - that's the option you want to choose. Now you can select the picture quality, size, and export. The file selector will appear so you can indicate the folder you want the pictures to be exported into. Now you can take the next step, sending them to eBay.

  • I am new to Mac and am having trouble with uploading images from my pictures folder to Facebook and other share sites- some of my images are accessible while others are seemingly locked....

I am new to Mac and am having trouble up loafing images from my pictures folder to photography sites and Facebook. Some of the saved images are accessible, while others are not, ( they are light colored and cannot be uploaded) I am not saving them any differently.

    Hi Robodisko,
    Thanks for your prompt reply......
I often proof my work in preview then edit images in photoshop and rename from there.  The dsc images are renamed to correlate the name of the class etc.  i.e. dcs_001 is saved as the file name required 7A.jpeg etc.
The file names are required to correlate what is what and so on..........

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If your Mac and PC are connected by Ethernet, unplug and plug that cable again. If not, you have to turn off the MacBook by holding the Power button.
In the next startup, try to transfer your files again. It's important not to interrupt the transfer process, because in most cases, you will stop it and you won't be able to resume it

Yes, you copy each one's iTunes folder to the /Home/Music/ folder in each of their separate user accounts. You will first need to create a separate user account for each of them using the Users & Groups preferences.

  • I am new to mac's and have upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion but......

I am new to mac's and have upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion but not all my application will work. Is it save to reinstall using original snow leopard dvd and does it wipe all my other application like apature? I am in a panic over this, any help!!
I came across this online and i want to know is it safe to do this:
Backup your User folders to an external drive. This should preserve your documents, photos, music, etc. If you store those things in locations not in the User folder, make sure to copy those over too.
Insert the Snow Leopard disc. Restart your Mac and hold down C to boot to your DVD drive.
Go to Utilities in the menu bar once the installer pops up and select “Disk Utility.”
Find the drive in the sidebar where Lion is installed, select it and navigate to the Partition tab.
Click on the drop down menu under Partition Layout and select “1 Partition.” Hit Apply.
Now navigate to the Erase tab and make sure “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” is selected, then hit Erase to delete all data on the drive.
Quit Disk Utility to get back to the Snow Leopard installer and proceed with the install.
Restore your User folder and documents from your backup.
Run Software Update to get everything current, install your apps from your original install media and update those as well.
if any one can help me that would be great, thanks Mike

Before you do that why not do this first:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
To boot from the Recovery HD restart the computer. After the chime hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
If this doesn't help, then you can proceed to reinstall Snow Leopard as follows:
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard. I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
This will erase the drive so be sure to backup your files before doing this.

  • I am new to Mac Pro but am purchasing one online.  can anyone tell me how to get the information from my Toshiba onto the Mac.  there are no stores in the state I live in.  Do I need to find a location and will they do a transfer from my I Tunes etc?

I am new to Mac Pro and am purchasing one online  tonight.  Can anyone tell me how to get my information - Itunes, photos, and videos transferred onto the Mac from my Toshiba.  the state I live in doesn't have an Apple store but I could take it to Minneapolis when I go.  Any ideas where to begin?

You might profit from a visit to a Minneapolis Apple store. With a brand new Mac, I think they will be most helpful - not just with transferring files, but with other advice as well. And I strongly recommend you invest in a back up drive. The Apple folk can help with that as well.

I'm new to Mac. I have an iPhone and a Mac Mini.  My original iTunes was on a Windows computer that crashed.  So, all of my iTunes Music and Movies are gone.  How do I get the movies and music from my iPhone to the new Mac Mini?

If you still have the crashed Win computer, you may be able to recover your music and movies from the hard drive. If you have a friend with a hard drive USB connection kit and a PC, they should be able to help.  Otherwise, check locally for computer services that might do that for you (I think Best Buy Geek Squad may be able to help). If the drive itself is in good shape, it shouldn't be too expensive.

I am recieving an error message when I try to copy new files (images, documents) to mac from flash drive/SD card. The message is saying "operation cannot be completed because an item already exists with that name." They are brand new therefore not the same name? I cannot even put them in a brand new folder...  How can I fix this?
    Please help me!

You don't need to recover the system.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press the space bar:
    dot_clean -m
Switch to the Finder and drag the icon of the flash drive into the Terminal window. Some text will appear after what you entered. Press return.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. Then quit Terminal and try the copy again.
