New to Mac, Help with Time Machine! Partition External HDD or not?
Hey Guys I'm a new mac user
I need help with time machine
I wanted to know how time machine works and what all does it back up?
I have 2 hard drives one is of 1TB and one is of 320gb
In the 1TB hard drive i store all my music videos and work stuff it is windows formatted
The 320gb hard drive is mac formatted and I was thinking of making a partition on it one with 250gb for time machine and the remaining 70 gb for mac softwares and files. The ssd of my mac has a capacity of 256gb. I have read for time machine you need at least 2x the space of your ssd on your external hard drive but i don't understand if my ssd is only 256 and can store files worth 256gb why do i need double the space? Secondly if I choose to use the complete 320 gb for time machine will that be okay or even if i choose to partition it to 250gb for time machine will that be fine too? Or will I need to format my 1TB hard disk out of which currently only 300 gb is empty and partition that to 500 gb for time machine?
I'm really confused every tells me to use time machine but do I need it? And what does it exactly do?
Your input will be really appreciate thanks
The reason that you want a partition (or drive) of 2-3 times the size of your boot drive for Time Machine is so that you can keep backups further back than just the current boot drive state - for that you'd need to make a clone of the drive rather than using Time Machine (see -> http://pondini.org/TM/Clones.html).
For more information for backups in general, see -> Most commonly used backup methods.
Note that you can't use Time Machine to backup a Windows partition.
Good luck,
Clinton

New user needs help with time machine and mac server.
I am a new mac user and got a new mac mini running server. I have time machine enabled on the server and a back up folder created. My macbook will not see the server when trying to set up time machine from the macbook. What am I missing? Thanks.
Unfortunately even though Apple had touted the AEBS USB2 HD use with TimeMachine (TM) they pulled it from the Leopard TM feature list about 1 week before releasing Leopard GNBuild 9A581.
At this time Apple does not support use of the AEBS USB HD for use TM.
I strongly suspect we will see this feature return in one of the next two updates Apple releases for Leopard.
In the meantime be patient and I don't recommend you use a hack to circumvent the current TM limitation. -
hay
I working from the beginning with fcpx i have fcp3 to
But i have a problem with the sound effects in fcpx they dont play in the menu of fcpx if i reinstall my mac pro with time machine
It is working again afther reinstall mountain lion.
is there someone with te same problem or dus sombody now wat the problem is of this.
Or is this a iseu of time machine ?
i never had that problem with OSX lion
ThanksTry getting the free "Preference Manger" applicaiton from Digital Rebellion (dot com). Use it to trash the FCP X preference files. See if that helps.
Also, on the new Mac, go into the App Store, under the Store menu, make sure you are signed in. -
Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive. "Could not complete backup to media share. The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features." What are AFP features and how do I get Time Machine to backup to my current external backup?
This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

Help with Time Machine Backups not working..
Let me preface this by saying I have spent the last day scouring the internet for solutions to my problem. I have tried every option that I have run across and have had no luck in resolving my problem. As a last resort, I'm turning here in hopes that you can be of help.
I have a 2012 Macbook Pro running Moutain Lion. I use an external HD for my time machine backups. I am having an issue with Time Machine not functioning. The initial error message I receive when I attempt to use TM to backup is: "Time machine couldn't coplete the backup to Rick's backup disk". "Unable to complete backup. an error occurred while creating the backup folder".
I searched the forums and net and found several things to do to try and resolve this issue. My computer will freeze out and not let me erase, or re-partition the the hard drive, so I switched it over to an older macbook of my girlfriends and am successfully able to erase, and re-partition the drive (using disk utility) as suggested by several forum postings I have read. I am able to run disk verify and disk repair and both say the disk is "ok" with no issues. The moment the erase and partition is done, her computer prompts a message : "Would you like to use this disk for Time Machine Backups" which tells me it is working properly. When I move it back to my macbook pro and attempt to run TM backup, it will now work and copy about 10g of my 120g before shutting down with this error message:
"Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Rick's Backup Disk". An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use disk utility to repair your backup disk."
If i attempt to re-run TM at that point, I get the original error message:
"Time machine couldn't coplete the backup to Rick's backup disk". "Unable to complete backup. an error occurred while creating the backup folder".
If I move the TM back to my Girlfriends computer and attempt to run TM, it will function properly and backup her entire harddrive. When I erase and try again on mine, I always end up back with the same issues. It's clearly something in my macbook that is screwing it up. Can anyone please offer some help! I'd be much appreciative.rcury4 wrote:

See #C10 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting
"Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Rick's Backup Disk". An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use disk utility to repair your backup disk."
Not one of Apple's more informative messages.
There's a problem with a file on your system. See #C3 in the above link. It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it. If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, what you've done, and the results. -
Back-up fcpx with time machine on external disk?
Hey there,
I just started with editing in FCPX on a Mac Book Pro, and I'm trying to make a back-up on an external hard disk with Time Machine and I work from my internal hard disk. So every time I'm done editing in FCPX I let Time Machine make a back-up on my external hard disk.
So that seemed a good idea, but when I'm trying to open a project from my Time Machine-back-up, FCPX gives the error: 'The document “CurrentVersion.fcpproject” could not be opened."
Is any one familiar with this problem? I just want to be sure that this way of backing-up my projects is doable. It would be a great help!
Grtz,
ChloeOpps! The program is Event Manager X. Sorry for the mistake. Google it to get to web site.
When you use "Duplicate Project" from within FCP X it will create an exact copy of your project. Options are included for events used in the project. I select the option to also copy all events actually used in the project. You have to select the hard drive where you want the duplicates stored. I put the duplicate on my backup hard drive. Now I have both the original project and the duplicate project showing in the Project Library. I also have a new event showing in the Event Library called "Clips for .... Project".
Now I want to "hide" my backup (duplicated) projects and events from FCP X so neither of us gets confused and inadvertently messes up the backup project. That's when I use Event Manager X. It will show you a list of all your projects and events on all your hard drives. You simply uncheck the project and events you want to hide. When FCP X opens back up those projects and events will not show up in your libraries.
To restore a backup project you simply repeat the process except check the projects and events you want to return to active status.
This, in my opinion, is a not only a good backup procedure, it's also an easy way to reduce clutter and mess in your workspace by "hiding" projects and events that you aren't using. There's also some evidence that having large numbers of projects and events showing in your library adversely affects FCP X performance.
You can schedule Time Machine to backup at certain time intervals; however, I'm thinking that it's pretty much backing up stuff as you work, so you need to turn it off manually. Not sure about this. Anyone else know how Machine Works?
Good luck, -
Mac can't find my partitioned external HDD
My previous setup was:
1 WD 2TB external HDD with own power supply, formatted as MacOS Extended (Journaled).
But I wanted to split this HDD up into two partitions, Archive and Library. I also wanted to have a Time Machine backup of this disk. So I bought another WD 2TB external HDD with own power supply. On this one, I made two partitions, Archive and Library, both as MacOS Extended (Journaled). Then I copied all the files of my first HDD to their specific location.
So my new setup was:
My new WD 2TB external HDD with own power supply, with two partitions, both formatted as MacOs Extended (Journaled).
My old WD 2TB external HDD was still holding a copy of the files on the new one, but I wanted to use this one for backup.
Now I just had to format the old WD 2TB, so I could use it as Time Machine backup. I knew this was a critical point. Because if something would go wrong I didn't have any backup. But what are the chances that things would have gone bad just right now???
As you can guess it did go wrong. My new HDD (the one with the partitions) could no longer be recognized by my Mac. My Time Machine backup was still indexing all the files, so didn't get an actual backup of them yet. A disaster!!!
When connected the new HDD I had a prompt window telling me that my computer couldn't find the disk, with the options 'Initialise...', 'Ignore' and 'Remove'. Choosing 'Intialise' I got into Disk Utility, it does detect the 'mother' HDD, but not the 'children' (= the partitions).
Is there a way to get my data back? I have everything on it: my files for work (important files for my business), but also my personal files (pictures, complete iTunes library with music and movies...).
I must say that I had this problem before. Same situation: I partitioned a disk and after a bit, my Mac couldn't find it anymore. Back then I thought it was the HDD, and as the files were not that important, I just forgot about it... until I found it back one day and discovered that I could restore the HDD, but I had to re-format it, meaning that all the files were lost.
This situation is different as lost files would mean a disaster. :-(
I hope there's someone out here that can help me.
Thanks in advance!
I use a MacBook Pro mid 2007. I currently use Mac OS Mountain Lion (up to date).Thank you! That information was definitely helpful.
I haven't tried since my post to get our printer to work (ended up sending my doc to Staples, in the interest of time, and haven't had to print anything since).
Anyway, this morning I replaced our ink and tried printing something. It still wasn't working (but this time, all it said was the printer wasn't connected). I reconnected the printer to the network, then turned it off, restarted our computer, and once the computer was back up, I turned the printer back on.
The printer appeared in our network, again, and my printing job was successful. Yay! I LOVE when technology works. =) -
New Mac-user need help with time machine
Hi. I have jut got rid of everything that reminds me of a pc, and installed an Imac + one macbook and a macbook pro in the house. I have also installed an airport extreme and connected an external 500gb drive + a printer to it. The idea was to use this network drive as a network backup disk for the different machines.
My question is: Can Time machine use this networkdisk to backup the different machines connected to the network? If so, how do I set it up. Right now this disk is not listed when I try to configure time machine.
Hope somebody have time to answer.
Thanks.

I need help with Time Machine - Won't back up properly
I'm new to Macs, my MBP is barely a month old, so bare with me. I do understand computers pretty well and I've been trying like **** to read up and fix this on my own, but it's starting to tick me off.
Okay so I got a "WD My Passport" external HD for Xmas and my goal is to have Time Machine back everything up on it. The problem started after a backup was halfway through and froze. I thought wiping the Passport clean and starting over would do the trick, but it was tricky figuring out how to erase "Backup In Progess Files"
I read up on the "Disk Utility" stuff and partioned the Passport, which set it back to normal it seemed like. So I tried the backup one more time, but again it froze a little less than half way through.
So now "Disk Utility" won't even let me erase the Passport or Partition it - it tries for about 10 minutes and eventually says it can't "unmount". Yet when I enter Time Machine it shows that some files have been backed up in "Star Wars Mode", but it seems like that's only saved to the MBP itself?
Please correct me if I'm wrong with my logic, and any help is much appreciated. I'll provide further input if it helps too, just let me know.Sounds like a bad Passport may be the culprit. If Disk Utility can't erase or properly mount the drive, it may have serious problems.
I've used Passports for Time Machine with great success, but I've also had to replace 2 of them as they eventually went bad. Try another external hard drive and I'll bet it works. -

New MacBook Pro - continue with Time Machine backups or start over?
I'm unsure of how I should proceed here ...
My old (late 2008 aluminium unibody MacBook) died last month and I now have a shiny new MB Pro. I transferred my data from one of two backup drives I have using Migration Assistant but did not transfer the Pictures folder because the new MB Pro only has a 256GB PCIE drive whereas I had upgraded my old MacBook to a 750GB hard drive. The Pictures folder was 175GB - it obviously couldn't be transferred in its entirety so at this stage I haven't transferred anything at all from my Pictures folder.
Both backup drives I use are 1TB Lacie Rugged external hard drives. I have them partitioned as follows -
Time Machine Backup - 475 GB
SuperDuper Backup - 350 GB
Pictures - 175GB (I only have the iPhoto Library on the Pictures backup)
I was thinking that I could simply continue with the existing backups, however, I realise that will be impossible because the existing backups all include the Pictures folder as part of the 'normal' backup process.
So, should I wipe my backup drives and start all over from scratch with the new MB Pro? Obviously, I don't need such a large space for the Time Machine and SuperDuper backups now so I could re-partition the drives and allocate more space to the Pictures folder (which is the one that continues to grow).
Does anyone else have experience of using their iPhoto Library on an external drive with the smaller PCIE drives in the MB Pro?
I would be very grateful for any suggestions as to how I should proceed.
TriciaMany thanks for your response Ingo2711. It seems as if we faced pretty much the identical situation.
I've never taken much notice of Time Machine - just let it do its own thing. However, when I go to System Preferences - Time Machine - Options - Exclude these items from Backups and then choose the Pictures folder it shows that the space saved is only 1.47GB (my Pictures folder on my old MacBook is about 175GB). I clicked on the Pictures folder in Finder and discovered that it had one folder in it which is the folder I use for Desktop and Screen Saver and that the size of that folder is, in fact, 1.47GB.
So, am I right in thinking that I can just allow Time Machine to do a full backup without excluding anything and it will see that the new system is different from the previous one or am I missing something? I really don't want to lose the previous backups in case I ever need to go back to something.
Cheers
Tricia
BTW, I'm going to download iPhoto Library Manager and see if I can put my photos in chronological order by year and then just keep the current year's photos on my new Mac and keep the rest on the Pictures partition of my backup drive (which is connected via USB 3) - I'm hoping that the access to the external drive won't be so slow over USB 3. -

I have this issue which may be causing the problem: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s134/sh/57080cce-43f4-4582-a7ba-e3ef4706f32b/ffec 3524a24a6a841dd12aafa30d5816/deep/0/Screenshot%203/10/13%206:14%20PM.jpghttps://www.evernote.com/shard/s134/sh/57080cce-43f4-4582-a7ba-e3ef4706f32b/ffec 3524a24a6a841dd12aafa30d5816/deep/0/Screenshot%203/10/13%206:14%20PM.jpghttps://www.evernote.com/shard/s134/sh/57080cce-43f4-4582-a7ba-e3ef4706f32b/ffec 3524a24a6a841dd12aafa30d5816/deep/0/Screenshot%203/10/13%206:14%20PM.jpghttps://www.evernote.com/shard/s134/sh/57080cce-43f4-4582-a7ba-e3ef4706f32b/ffec 3524a24a6a841dd12aafa30d5816/deep/0/Screenshot%203/10/13%206:14%20PM.jpg
I bought a New Seagate GoFlex Home Drive that attcheds to wireless modem it took 24 hour to back up 256 GB finally finish then 30 minutes later It attempted an update it go hung up at 18GB. I've had to just stop it.Look folks I am seriously desperate. I've progressed from hanging up to Time machine remebering that a backup was created on March 10th but not remebering that it has backed up afterewards. This is the first time since I purchased my First Mac a SE/30 I am Rady to throw my Computer as far as I can throw it. And Jump on it.
One time it will get through and remember the last update. and next time. But then the next time it may update normally or may forget and go back to square one again. I can't find anymore USB2 Drives and the last USP 3 Drive I had burnt the cable or the drive out. I need a FireWire or thunderbolt Drive. I feel the problem with the GoFlex Drive is because it depends up wifi. Frankly My Comcast Cable connection is not dependable.
I thought this Forum people knew how time machine works.

Install new MBP by restoring with Time Machine?
Hello,
I own a MBP 2009 and assuming I get the newest one 2012 ... will the installation be as straightforward as running Time Machine restore against the new one? or will it get a bit more complicated given the hardware differences?
TIA,
Best regards,
GiovanniSince we do not know what the next iteration of MBPs will be like with any certainty, no one can give you a definitive answer. I suspect that data transfer will be essentially the same as it is today if one had a MBP with Lion installed on it. With that in mind you might consider reading the PONDINI.ORG website which specifically focuses on Time Machine.

Back up Mac Server with Time Machine Server installed on the same Time Machine Server
I want to back up several Workstations (“Workstations 1-4” in diagram below) and a Mac OS X Server (“MacMini Server” in diagram below) that runs “Time Machine Server” on that same “Time Machine Server.”
Is this possible?
The MacMini server doesn’t seem to find the “Time Machine Server” for backups. I read that this is due to the fact that Time Machine backups via network are organized in another way than “normal” Time Machine backups are.
MacOS server is running MacOS 10.8.5 with server app v2.2.1(169)-
workstations are running 10.10.1, 10.9.5 and 10.8.4The Time Capsule and Time Machine will automatically keep backups for each Mac separate.
A user on one Mac will not be able to "see" the backups of the other Mac.
You can add a few more Macs if you wish. 4 or 5 Macs would probably be a practical limit, depending on the size of the hard drive in the Time Capsule. -
HT3275 Need help with Time Machine back up
I keep receiving this message: Time Machine could not complete the back up. The back up disk image "Volumes/Data/A**** W**** Mac Book Pro. Sparse Bundle" could not be created. (error 1). Time Machine and Airport are up to date, as is the Macbook Pro. I have not been able to find a work around for this error. Any advice would be appreciated.
There are different reasons for that problem. Follow the steps of this page > http://pondini.org/TM/C17.html
