New to Mac iMovie HD Question?

I just purchased an imac G5 (coming from a PC) specifically to work with home movies & pictures of the family. That's what I did the most on a PC and it looked like the offering for Mac was much friendlier.
When I used the PC, I used either Windows Movie Maker or Adobe Premeire, one for a quick movie and the other for a more complex edit job. In either case, you would capture the hour DV and ,in some cases it would make clips, but it always allowed you to view the clip outside of the timeline and set key frames prior to inserting into the timelime. Does iMovie have this setting?
It looks like iMovie captures the footage as clips, then you can drag the clips into the timeline, then if you want to shorten the clip you can drag the mouse to shorten each clip. Seems for my home videos lots of editing is needed as the clips are usaully not exactly what I want. What I have usally done in the past is make a 4-5 minute video highlighting the 1-hr DV, then also attach the 1 hr raw footage to a DVD. Having to squeeze each clip to make it 4-5 minutes seems difficult. Maybe Final Cut Express is in order? or can iMovie HD do this?
Sorry for the long post and thanks for the help.
Travis
Imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hi Travis - welcome to the forum!
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the PC editing apps, but iMovie does not have the key-frame feature you refer to.
iMovie has more than one way to edit clips - either direct trimming (which you describe), or cropping, splitting etc using the play-head.
By changing Preferences you can import direct to the Timeline, or into the Clips Pane, and import as discrete clips, or without breaks.
For your purpose, I would import to the Clips Pane, then Option-Drag them to the Timeline or Clips Viewer. This will leave a duplicate set in the Clips Pane.
Now 'slash and burn' the clips on the timeline as much as you need to make your highlight mini-movie, add title etc, THEN drag the whole un-modified set of clips onto the timeline. You now have two movies in one. That can be made into a DVD as is.
If you want them SEPARATE, you could cut and paste the highlight movie to a new project.
Hope that helps.

  • New to mac and iphoto, questions about photo structure & organization

I bought a new Macbook Pro a couple of days ago and am still figuring things out. I wasn't displeased with windows...I just decided to try a mac anyway, So far, I adore it except for one thing, the pictures.
I spent hours researching whether to download and use picasa 3 for mac or iphoto. I decided on picasa....and now I've changed my mind. (Mostly because I tried to take pictures of the moon tonight, and they looked great in camera, but Picasa could only pick up a black screen whearas iphoto actually saw and defined the moon- and with the editing software on the two, the picasa auto-edit looked like a picture that was created in microsoft paint, and iphoto came out with a beautifully contrasted photo).
Now that I decided to use iphoto, I have been researching how to switch and still seem to have a lot of questions. (I've poked around numerous forums but have found conflicting answers on different sites).
    1) I organize my pictures by folders with the month and year. I know iphoto organizes events, which it seems to determine based on photo similarity. Will my photo structure still appear in finder -> pictures?
    2) Is it possible to stop iphoto from organizing my pictures and just trust me on what I want?
    3) All of my friends and family use PCs, and there is a chance that due to financial concerns, when I eventually replace my macbook pro (far in the future) I could switch to a pc. Does iphoto make transferring pictures more difficult? (If I understand correctly, it does not change the photo file, a jpeg is still a jpeg but I want to be sure)
    4) I do not want iphoto to duplicate all of the pictures already in my library....if I import from finder-users-pictures, will it simply use those, or duplicate all 150gb worth of pictures?
    5) Any other tips for someone completely new to macs and iphoto?
    6) This is very silly, but how do I uninstall picasa (I know how to uninstall on a windows but want to make sure I do things correctly on my mac!)
Also, just a "bonus"- regarding events vs. files I create, will iphoto create events within the program but leave my file structure in the library it imports from alone? If I use finder to go to where I store my photos, will I still see my file structure regardless of what iphoto does?(Does that make sense? I'm having a hard time trying to describe it)
I apologize if this question is foolish or misplaced- I did read many other posts but didn't see the answers I was looking for.

Your questions are neither foolish nor misplaced.
The first thing I strongly suggest is that you make a trial iPhoto Library. Import 100 or 200 pics and explore. Iphoto isn't right for everybody, and if you're going to use it you will need to rethink things a little.
    1) I organize my pictures by folders with the month and year. I know iphoto organizes events, which it seems to determine based on photo similarity. Will my photo structure still appear in finder -> pictures?
A: Events are based entirely on Date and Time not on 'photo similarity' You can set the interval for what makes an Event in the iPhoto Preferences: iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> General Pane: Autosplit into Events... And select from the drop down menu.
Will my photo structure still appear in finder -> pictures?
Yes or no, depending... iPhoto can run as a Referenced or Managed Library. In the former case, yes you files will be visible in the Finder, in the latter case they won't.
Note that Referenced or Managed refers +only to file storage+ It offers no extra functionality, it does nothing at all. App like iPhoto are your go-to app for your photos. If you use it, then you never access the photos via the Finder. Ever. It's always via iPhoto or the many, many hooks into the OS that it has.
I'll detail more on Referenced v Managed below.
    2) Is it possible to stop iphoto from organizing my pictures and just trust me on what I want?
I'm not sure what you mean by this. Iphoto does basic date and time organisation by default. You can change it, you can change the location of the photos in Events, merge them and then using the other tools available - Albums, Smart Albums, Faces, Places etc you can organise your photos whatever way you want.
But what do you mean by pictures. There is a distinction between Photos - the image of your child holding his dog - and files: A Jpeg is just a file. Iphoto is designed for you to +forget about the jpeg+ and get on with the interesting bit: the pics of your younger and his pet.
A Jpeg is a Jpeg is a Jpeg. If you migrate to another app or an entire OS you can export the photos plus any and all metadata you've added to the Finder and move it on. (Caveat: You cannot export Faces. There is no agreed standard on any system for exchanging this info.)
    4) I do not want iphoto to duplicate all of the pictures already in my library....if I import from finder-users-pictures, will it simply use those, or duplicate all 150gb worth of pictures?
It can do either. And this brings me back to the Referenced v Managed discussion above. By default, iPhoto will Manage the files, that is, it will copy them into the Library. You can choose not to, but I strongly recommend that you don't:
    *How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
    *What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
    *Some things to consider:*
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
    My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
*If you want to edit the photo in another application:*
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
    5) Any other tips for someone completely new to macs and iphoto?
    *To Push Home a point*
For someone inexperienced with Macs and inexperienced with iPhoto I cannot stress enough that Managed Library is the way to go. I understand there is comfort in seeing all those folders. But inside the Library that's all there is: all those folders, stored so that an inexperienced user can't grub things up!
The iPhoto Library Folder is a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. Want to see inside?
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
Now close that window and forget about it.
So, once you've imported your photos to iPhoto in a Managed Library, the surplus duplicates are +your folders+. Of course, in time, trash them to get back the wasted disk space. But don't do it today or tomorrow. There's no hurry. When you feel confident that you understand how iPhoto is working and that's it's working for you, theat's the time to reclaim the space.
I organize my pictures by folders with the month and year.
If you want to duplicate your Folder Tree in iPhoto:
Start at the bottom of the hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Album Heading in iPhoto. The pics will be imported and an Album of the same name created.
You can then create the Enclosing Folders in the iPhoto Window (File -> New Folder) and drag the Album to it. Folders can contain other Folders (Nested Folders) and Albums.
However, is your folder system date based? Then this form of organisation is a bit pointless in iPhoto when Smart Albums or the Calendar tool (Click on the wee magnifying glass in the Search Box) mean you can find the photos taken on any day, month or year at a click. With Smart Albums it's easy to find photos from specific range - say, June 3 to August 25, 2009 etc.
If your folder system is theme based - Xmas pics, Birthday pics etc, then you'll find Keywords are much more flexible, and can be used in conjunction with other criteria for making Smart Albums and searches.
    6) This is very silly, but how do I uninstall picasa (I know how to uninstall on a windows but want to make sure I do things correctly on my mac!)
Drag the app to the trash and empty it.
    Regards
    TD

  • New to Mac (Lion USB Questions)

Ok, so I'm completely new to Macs, unless you consider a Mac 2 way back in the day (booted the os to ram from 2 or 3 floppy discs). I recently bought a macbook pro off of ebay that needed a little repair, but works non-the-less. I borrowed a Leapard CD from a friend and installed it. I updated everything as much as I could, and just used it here and there for the past month maybe, just getting use to the interface. The LCD is somewhat messed up, so I haven't used it as a daily device at all. So I logged into iTunes on it for the first time just 2-3 days ago, and apparently there is a security flaw, and my account got hacked and an attempted charge of gift cards to give to some other account were charged to paypal. Luckily, paypal saw the multiple charges for the same thing in less then a minute and automatically put them into dispute (I wasn't charged).
The actual fraud at this point isn't the issue, because I've changed the passwords and security questions for everything attached to iTunes (paypal, email, apple id), so all is secure on that front, and paypal is clearing up the charges as I type this out. The issue is that it happened in the first place. I'm guessing because it's an older version of the OS, it was a security flaw that is known about (since there is a 70 page post somewhere about similar instances), and I'm guessing it's fixed in Lion.
If it is, then I'm wanting to upgrade to Lion and be done with it. I just don't feel safe installing from the app store from an OS that is known to have had an account stolen on it. So, I'd like to install from scratch. I'm planning on installing from the thumbdrive via a physical store location (to impatient to order online at this point ). I'm mainly wanting to know, if I install from the USB device, can I do a full and complete system wipe and still install it from the USB drive without having to install an older OS first, like you do if you install it from the app store?
O-o maybe I should have only asked the questions in the last paragraph, but meh... I'm still furious about my account being stolen in the first month or so on mac os, when I've been using windows for over a decade (on the internet even) and have had no fraud what so ever... At this point, I'm going to just say it's the older OS, and get the newest one, and see. I just want to make sure I don't waste $70 getting the thumbdrive just to have to get Snow leapard to install it. I really don't trust the os I currently have installed, and would like to start from complete scratch.

"I'm mainly wanting to know, if I install from the USB device, can I do a full and complete system wipe and still install it from the USB drive without having to install an older OS first,"
Yes, you can do a clean install from the flash drive. You can only upgrade from Snow Leopard with the flash drive.
I cannot answer your questions about fraud. We don't know the specifics of what happened to you nor whether this was the result of a security flaw in the OS or elsewhere or simply a failure on your part to maintain the security of your data.

  • I'm new to Macs, have a question about a 20" cinema display

Hi, I just got a used G5 with a 20" display. I am new to Macs, just trying to figure a few things out. The display is great, but when it comes to text some letters are not as sharp as I want them to be, plus the monitor is giving me a headache/eye strain - perhaps because of the frequency ( I did ot find a way to change it ). I'm running it at 1680x1050 which looks the sharpest but can it be better? How can I achieve sharper text and avoid the eye strain?
Thank you in advance for all the help.

    g5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You might try turning the brightness down...like way down...when reading text. LCD monitors are much brighter than CRT monitors of the past. The out-of-box configuration is usually way too bright for comfortable text use.
You can always turn the brightness back up when you want to look at photos and that sort of thing. The monitor I have at work is set to "0" brightness and it's still plenty bright.

  • A few questions before I buy a new iMac/Mac mini and sign up for Creative Cloud.

    Hello Everyone,
I am looking to purchase a new Apple computer and sign up for Creative Cloud within the next week and I have a few questions that should be answered before I proceed.
My wife and I own a business and we will be using the CS6 apps to create brochures, Constant Contact mailings, product package inserts, edit product photography for print and web use, and short HD how-to videos. We are not graphics professionals or power users and wont be doing anything too complicated.
Any help and answers will be greatly appreciated.
I will start with the hardware questions first:
I am trying to decide between the iMac and the Mac mini.
The iMac is a 2.7Ghz Quad-core Intel core i5 and comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 16GB, which I will do for sure. It comes with a Radeon HD 6770M graphics card with 512MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 1TB HDD that runs at 7200RPM. This unit meets the specs required.
The 2.5Ghz Mac Mini comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 8GB, I will also do this. It has a Radeon HD 6630M graphics card with 256MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 500GB HDD that runs at 5400RPM. This unit meets all the spec(I think) except for the speed of the HDD.
Question: Will the mini run the software without too much of an issue considering the speed of the HDD?
Question: Will the iMac run the software significantly better to justify the price difference?
I already have 1 mini(purchased 4 months ago, with the same specs listed above) and will be purchasing a second computer for my wifes desk. If the mini will run CS6 fine, that is great and we can save a few bucks. If my mini will not run CS6 well, I will get the iMac for her desk as she will be doing the bulk of the work in that regard anyway.
Now a couple of software questions.
After reading hundreds of reviews and forum posts over the last few days I have seen many people having this or that issue. It seems to me that most of the issues are because of upgrades from Lion to Mountian Lion after installing CS6 first or trying to open CS3,4,5 files in CS6.
If you want to know what issues have me concerned take a look at just this one forum:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2012/07/adobe-cs-apps-mountain-lion-no-known-issues.html
Similar issues are discussed in the Apple forums as well as many other places around the web.
I am not a computer professional but I know enough to maintain my systems and keep them running smoothly.
We do not have any Adobe software installed on my mini and will not be opening any files from previous versions of Adobe product in the new CS6 software. These will be a clean installs on pristine systems running fully updated Mountian Lion OS's on both machines and creating new files from scratch.
Question: Should I be expecting any issues like the ones I have read in the forums and blogs or are these just the normal things that happen when upgrading to new software with multiple hardware configurations?
My feeling is that we will not be having too much of a problem due to the clean installs and no files from previous versions.
Next up, the Creative Cloud(CC) FAQ states that you can install on 2 machines but can't open stuff at the same time.
Question: Does this mean we can't be using any CS6 apps at the same time or just not using the same app at the same time?
Example: PS and PS on both machines at same time = No, PS on one and Dreamweaver on the other at the same time=Yes?
The CC FAQ page says Adobe will add Lightroom 4 later in 2012 while the main CC page lists it as available now.
    Question: Which is true?
My mini is registered to me, with my name, iTunes account, Apple ID etc.
Question: Do I need to do the initial set-up of the new machine with all my information to ensure the CS6 suite works on both machines? Do the computers need to be registered(as far as Apple configuration is concerned) to same person for them to work on one CC account or can I install CS6 on any 2 machines regardless of how they were initially set-up?
This may seem like a silly question but I want to avoid any problems before they happen.
Well, those are all of my questions at the moment. To anyone who made it this far in my looooong post, Thank You so much for your time. I appreciate your expertise and knowledge and hope that you can help me make this decision.
    Cheers,
    Alex Bogdan

    Alex,
I'll try and answer your questions as best I can.
    Qn 1 Which Mac.
Ans:- As I understand it both units will run Adobe CS6.
Which one really depends on what you wand from CS6. If you are looking for high end demand and performance, then I would go for the IMac
Your Specs for the Imac are right. However if you buy your IMac straight from Apple there are even higher specs.
              You can get:-
3.4 GHz i7 processor rather than the i5
2GB video card as opposed to a 1Gb video card.
Of course such a model will cost you more.
In the end it is needs compared with money to spend. That is only a decision you cam make.
Q2:- Will the higher cost for the Imac justify copst.
Ans:- Again it depends on what demands you intend to make on the hardware and software.
But I note you have a business and if that businees expects to high demand and high speedy performance then I suspect the Imac would be more able to provide your needs.
Again only you will know the answer to that.
    Q3:- Questions about CS6 reliability
Ans:- I have been with Adobe for way over 10 years.
Speaking, only for myself, it is the most reliable software on the market.
It is true that if you look down this form, like any other and I am thinking about the Apple discussions forum, you will find numerous instances of problems.
Again this is only my opinion, but although all these problems are real for the individuals:-
First it is not clear why they have the problem e.g. what have they done or not done.
Second, they are in the minority of the total users using the hardware / software.
The only problem I am aware of with CS6 is Acrobat X. I understand it has been sorted Adobe, however it cost me so much work I have removed it from my system and reverted to Acrobat 9
So what I am saying is that there are only two comapnies I rely 100% on: They are Adobe and Apple.
So if you are happy with my opinion I would not worry about Adobe CS6
    Qn 4:- CS6 0n 2 machines.
Ans:- Yes you will not be able to run the same program similtaneosly.
I believe, if it is important that you do run the same program together, that you can acquire a further licience from Adobe to do that.
You would need to contact Adobe about that.
    Qn 5:- Lightroom 4
Ans:- Lightroom is now available as part of Creative Cloud.
Qn 6:- Set up for individual machines
Ans:- I do not believe you do. Once you have set up your Creative Cloud account you go to the apps site and download the apps for each machine.
Each machine downloads the apps and your machine and the apps are registered by Adobe.
Here is something that you may want to know:-
Because I was so unhappy loosing all the Acrobat data with Acrobat X I ended up deleting Acrobat X
However as far as Creative Cloud is concered Acrobat X is still on my machine.
It is not a problem for me because I am happy with Acrobat 9, it fullfils my needs and has not crashed and lost me all my bookmarks.
              However here is the point:-
Adobe, when there was a problem with Acrobat X requested that no-one deletes the application.
Though I do not know for certain I believe registration of the apps you have with Creative Cloud are registered with Creative Cloud in their database. Therefore were you to delete an app, it will still be registered with Creative Cloud and you will not be able to download a further copy even though the app is no longer on your    machine.
Therefore it maybe not a good idea to delete an app when you no longer have a use for it. If you want it back I suspect you will have to contact Adobe Support
    Personal Comment:-
It is true many unfortunately have had all sorts of problems, including me with Acrobat X.
That said, Creative Cloud in my view has been a major advance in how Adobe delivers software. I have no regrets with signing up to Creative Cloud and I expect to remain with it.
Hope all of that goes some way to answering your questions.

  • New Mac Pro setup questions..

    Hi,
Just pulled the trigger on a Mac Pro 3gh, 4gb, ATI 1900. I am going to that from a dual 1.42 quicksilver and had some questions.
It seems migration assistant may not be the best way to go. Is this true, should I reinstall everything? Is it possible to drag and drop apps to the new machine?
Is it possible to get mail info from another machine to the new one? I have an iMac at home that I have been using Mail with and would like all the email addresses on the new machine at work. My old setup, I was still using Enterouge (sp) and would like to use Mail like at home.
I have the stock 250gb drive and I need to figure out different drive scenarios. I recently bought two external 500gb drives before even thinking about a new system. I am a commercial photographer and one drive is a backup that lives offsite from my studio for protection. Should I mirror with an external?
    Thanks for any help!

Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

  • Migration Question for New Leopard Mac Mini

Oh my... I have a new Leopard Mac Mini still in the box!
I want to connect it up and migrate my iTunes and iPhoto libraries, etc. to it from my old Mac Mini but here's the thing: my old Mac Mini is a G4, powerpc mac has been through a sort of mini **** lately and at this time will need it's hard disk repaired before I will be able to get it back up to 10.4.11 and Safari 3.0.4. that it had had only last week, before all manner of disasters happened after the last security update. Genius bar made it relatively functional by re-installing the OS but they used 10.4.7 and Safari 2.0.4. to do it! So here is my question: Do I need to get my PPC Mac back up to snuff completely before I can migrate stuff from it to the new Leopard Mac Mini or can I do the migration and get everything nice and lovely on the new machine even though there are still problems on the old Mac Mini?
Here is the problem that the PPC G4 Mac Mini has at this time:
    Verifying volume "Macintosh HD"
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid index key
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
Would this pose a problem in the migration?
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much! -Charlotte

The best thing I can say about your post is that at least you realize that Installing Leopard on a broken Tiger and a G4 processor files is exactly how hundreds of the problems are being caused. Too many people have decided that "Apple Just Works" and figure that installing the newest most complex MacOS ever will just work. These people are getting "worked".
Good Luck cleaning up your machine to tip-top shape to 10.4.11, with every update for every program you intend to transfer. Your drive must be squeeky clean, or you will have problems that nobody can explain. I'd recommend removing any applications you don't have to have or that you can reinstall easily with a program like App Zapper and get rid of the G4 system files as much as possible.

  • I have a new imac with imovie 11 however my hd everio camcorder will only work with imovie 8 or 9 how do i download imovie 9? all i can find are updates and my mac says i don't need it

i have a new imac with imovie 11 however my everio hd camcorder will only work with imovie 8 or 9. i tried to download imovie 9 but my mac says i don't need the update. How can i download imovie 8 or 9 complete not the update?

I really appreciate all your help. Today I spent some time on the problem. First I purchased  any video converter from the ap store and then I connected the camera to the mac with the original usb cable that came with the camera. I turned on the camera and selected backup on pc and the logo came up on my home page. I opened it and after several attempts i found the 3 video files that were on the camera. I then converted them from a tod file to mp4 and then transfered  them to imovie. Now I have to figure out how to send the video to youtube or move it to an external hard drive which I have not been able to do. So far I am not too fond of imovie 11. If you could send me  the download for imovie 6 I then could try that route. When talking to apple support yesterday about the problem they suggested to get Final Cut Express. It's 200 bucks so before i order the install disc i would like to try your suggestion. My email address is [email protected] Again I thank you very much for your help! George

  • How to convert mp4 videos (HD) for use on the new ipad in imovie without a mac.

    Hi,
Please help. I have many videos taken with my sony cybershot camera (Mpv4 (HD)). I have the new ipad and have downloaded imovie. I have converted the videos so they can be viewed on the ipad but imovie will not recognize them. I have a Pc (not a Mac) and have watched many youtube tutorials on how to convert my videos for use on the new ipad and imovie but so far no success.

If you are on the PC there are a LOT of video converters you can use. One of them is Freemake: http://www.freemake.com/
It's free, no ads or banners, clean interface, simple to use, and you can convert to various formats with ease.

  • I want to send a normal pages document as a attachment to someone (non Mac PC). How do I convert the file so they can open it? Silly question but I'm new to Mac.

A Pages (.pages) document is only viewable with Apple's Pages application on the Mac, or via Pages for iCloud beta. You should export it to either MS Word (.doc/x) or PDF. The Share menu will let you do this directly into a Mail attachment.

  • Few questions about my new mac book? im new to mac

#1.  Im new to mac so i dont know a whole lot about them but today while browsing the web i got a window that opened that said "browse your mac with Mackeeper to clean it and make sure its safe and to optimize your performance"  I didnt click on anything but it wouldnt let me exit out i had to force quit my Safari to get it to go away.  What is this?
#2.  What do i need to do to keep my mac from getting slow and getting viruses? the most i really do on it is typing work, checking email, watching you tube, social networking on facebook, and browsing forums (forums like this where i can ask questions or share my experiences on certain things)  if im not doing any of that im on websites like bestbuy or Cabelas or Bass pro shops doing online shopping.  Every so often i have to do online research but not often.  do i have much to worry about?
#3.  Im on my computer everyday what is better for it? Leaving it turned on 24/7 since i mainly use it at home plugged into the wall turning it on in the morning or whenever i get on and shutting it down before bed? or turning it on and off throughout the day as i get on and off?
#4.  When the computer is plugged in the battery says it only has a 96% charge.. its brandnew shouldnt it be at 100%? even though so far i havent really used the battery?

    1. The popup you received should be ignored, you were wise to ignore it. It is well publicized in other forums. I'd recommend looking over:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3029144?tstart=0 for a more thorough explanation.
    2. There are zero, none, nada, zip Virus's for Macs so the best thing you can do is simply enjoy it. There is no maintenance that is necessary either, everything you were used to doing with a PC is now in your past! OS X is designed to do daily, weekly and monthly maintenance on it's own in the background usually in the middle of the night. Nothing other than that needs to be done. You can download and install Maintidget at:
http://www.giantmike.com/widgets/Maintidget.html this will show you when these scripts were last run.
    3. As for what is best for your computer I'd recommend reading the owners manual that came with it. Because you have a portable it has a battery that needs to be maintained. Please read the following articles on the care of your battery, it needs to be exercised. Leaving it plugged in 24/7 shortens it's life so please read the articles especially the article on calibration.
Batteries , Battery Calibration , Battery Maintenance and Troubleshooting.
    4. Also because you are new to Mac's I'd recommend bookmarking and reading the following sites, they're specifically for folks like yourself that are considering or have changed from MS Windows.
Switch 101 , Mac 101, Find Out How Video tutorials

  • I am very new to Macs and iPhoto so this may be an idiot's question, but I have just created my first photo book and want to buy it, but the "buy book" button is not highlighted and when I click it nothing happens. Is there some step I am missing? Thanks!

I am very new to Macs and iPhoto so this may be an idiot's question, but I have just created my first photo book and want to buy it, but the "buy book" button is not highlighted and when I click it nothing happens. Is there some step I am missing or some connection I need? I am on the internet. Thanks!

I have now recently downloaded 10.0.2 which is confusing in itself, as, as far as I can ascertain that is actually version 11, but I'm not even sure about that.
Version 10.0.2 is the newest version and the successor to GarageBand '11 (version 6.0.5).
The '11 is referring to the iLife '11 suit of multimedia application - the older GarageBand was a part of this bundle.
Have a look at Edgar's graphical enhanced manuals, the explain very detailed how things work and why. You can buy them as iBooks from the iBook store or directly from the page:
