New to MAC - need advice on WEB site maintenance

Hello switched to mac from windows very recently. I need to find an easy to use wysiwygI software which will allow me to maintain my template based website , previously maintained in expression web. IWEB appears to only work with sites created in IWEB. I downloaded CODA which is nice but appears not to be WYSIWYG. Can someone recommend a really simple intuitive yet powerful web site editor with wysiwyg functionality. Appreciate any help

Try taking a look at RapidWeaver which is available via the Mac App Store. You could also look at Sandvox and Sandvox Pro from http://www.karelia.com.
You are correct that iWeb cannot open a previously published website.

  • New to Mac. Advice needed on partitoning the hard drive

    Hello all.
I am new to Mac having purchased a MacBookPro 13 inches with i7 processor and 750GB hard drive this month. I was using windowsXP since the last 9 years. In the windows system I had my hard drive partitoned to four units. I want to continue to save files in the same pattern i.e in four partitions. I do a lot of work with video/image editing. So here are the things that I want to know
Does partitioning bring down efficiency of the machine ? (More likely to "hang" or otherwise become less responsive)
How much  hard drive space should I give to my operating system?
Should I partiton and migrate or vice-versa ?
Thanks for all answers. I actually dont know a thing in the Mac universe and therefore many of the earlier discussions on partitions in these forums (using words such as boot camp etc) were way above my level

    1) No not really
    2) Since OS X is slight different then Windows as far as installing programs, in OS X you must install programs to the Application folder which is in the ROOT of the OS partition, I would allocate at least 100-150GBs of space. Also all the User files are store in the /Users/Username folder which is also on the OS partition. Things like the iTunes and iPhoto libraries are initially store there but can be moved. That is a later topic.
    3) Personally I don't use any built in Migration system. If you do a search of these forum you will see a lot of posts about how it really doesn't work. Yes it will copy your data but it places it in a second User folder. It's hard to explain.
I would just copy your files over and put them where you want.
So the answer is, it is up to you. But I would partition first then copy over.
You may not like the Mac. It is a different beast then Windows. It takes time to get use to, that is if you can get use to it.
Remember this. Apple has a 14 day No Questions Asked return policy. So if after a short time, less then 13 day, you find the Mac way of doing things isn't to your liking you can take it back and get a full refund.
IMHO there is no real difference between Windows and OS X. They both do the exact same thing, write ones and zeros to a hard drive and display stuff on a screen so you can interact with it.
One is no better then the other, they just do some things slightly different. One is not easier to use then the other. They both use the exact same hardware and they both have software and hardware glitches. Only PCs cost less.
    Good luck

  • New iWeb User needs help regarding multiple sites

As a new user please excuse me if this has an obvious answer.
I have 4 web site, very simple, that I have used Frontpage with for years.
I want to make new websites with iWeb but I am worried I may screw something up.
I have already created one new iWeb Site and it comes up in the left hand pane as SITE 1.
I have used that for ages and use a seperate FTP program to publish to my independent Server with no problem. I usually publish to a folder first then use the FTP software to publish to the Server and its fine
The trouble I have now is probably becasue I don't know how to use iWeb properly but I'll try to explain.
I made another website and it creates SITE 2 in the left hand pane and I have produced a few pages for that site.
My problem is that when i go to publish to a folder for the 2nd site, it automatically does the first site as well ?
In most other programs (like Frontpage) you have to open the individual sites on their own so you can keep everything seperate but iWeb seems to put them all together.
I now have a folder (on my Apple) with SITE 1 and all its files and in another seperate folder (which I made just for SITE 2) have SITE 1 and SITE 2 and I'm scared to delete the copy of SITE 1 in case it deletes all of it !!
I wish there was a simple 'OPEN SITE' command in iWeb where you cna pick the opne you want to work on but it doesn't seem to be there.
If I am missing something obvious I'd be grateful of some advice becasue I really would like to get the other sites made up.

I'll try to make this simple!
Lets say that you have a website already and you named the site Family.
You decide you want to create another website for example, My Pets.
First create a 2 folders a place them where you will remember where they are.
One of the new folders will be called (Family) (of course both folders are empty at this time. The second folder you created you will name (MY PETS)Ok you with me so far?
Now lets suppose you have the iweb open to the (Family) website. Quit iweb...
Go to users/Library/Application Support/iweb. You will see a iweb icon that will say (Domain.Sites2. Drag the domain.sites2 to the (family) folder you just created. Now for your new site that you want to start. (MY PETS) OPEN iweb. You should now be prompted to choose a template. That's because you removed the domain.sites2 out and put it into another folder.
iweb thinks your are starting a new project and prompts you to choose a template as described earlier. Any pictures you add you should keep them in the separate folder in case you need edit or if you accidentally delete them. For example on the (my Pets site) any pictures you have there you will have in the same folder as the my pets folder you created. What I do is I make additional folders within the site folder I created so I can find things faster. Pets,I would have a pets folder and so on. Do the same for the other folder.(Family)
Now you created your new website (MY PETS) and you decide you want to go back and work on the (Family) website. Quit iweb. and then go to User/Library/Application Support/iweb... REMOVE the Domain.sites2 (MY PETS) and go to other folder(Family) and drag that Domain.site2 where you previously removed the other domain.sites2.. Open iweb and there it is.
Tip: When you place a Domain.sites2 into one of the folders you created it is always good to copy the domain.site2 and paste it into the same folder. When you copy and paste a Domain.sites2 the copy of it will say (Domain copy.sites2) This is a good practice to make because if you forget to close a iweb and drag a domain.sites2 out and replace it with another site. iweb will overwrite it when you save and quit. If that happens Just go the the copy you made and drag it to the: users/Library/Application Support/iweb.
once you drag it to iweb folder click on it once and press enter. You will see the text Domain Copy highlighted. Just delete the word (COPY) make sure it looks like this when your done... Domain.sites2
Open iweb and there it is.
Sorry about all the detail as this is a bad habit of mine, but I hope it helps.

  • QT Movie help to post to .mac account or own web site

Hello. I used iPhoto 6.0.6 to make a slideshow. Then I exported it into a large quality QT movie and it's 460MB.
I want to post it to my .mac account and my own web site (I use Fetch to upload folders--that's the extent of my posting knowledge) and found a help topic mentioning using the "share" button on QuickTime Pro 7.2.0. My share button is grayed out and I've registered my version.
I also tried dragging the movie to my Public Folder on my iDisk, but it stalls out on the "closing" step and requires the computer to be restarted.
Help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Compressing QuickTime files is nearly an art form and every file may need different settings based on the content in them. Lots of action requires a faster frame rate. Image only files can reduce that to microscopic frame rates and save both bandwidth and load times.
I've been making QuickTime files since version 3 and there are many ways to get both small file sizes and a sense of "drama" when using just still image files. Some of mine to give you some ideas can be found at this link:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/03war/
I think my biggest file is still under 6 MB's.

  • 2 .mac accounts, 2 seperate web sites

So I am using two different .mac accounts because we have the family one so one is for family and the other is my personal. I have an iWeb site built for each.
However, from what I can tell there is no way to publish them seperately.
    I've worked around this by:
    1. When I want to publish my personal site I need to log into my .mac account and than place that SITE at the top of iWeb to publsih. But it publishes BOTH sites listed anyway.
    2. When I want to do the other I have to sign into my other .mac and then switch which SITE is on top.
This is a pain in the arse. AND it means that both of my sites are uploaded to both .macs (using up precious space), that is not cool.
    What can I do? Thanks.

What Kyn instructs would even be useful if you decided to only keep ONE .Mac account. But if you have two separate .Mac accounts, you can name your sites whatever you want and publish them independently. Here is what you need to do...
    1. Create an additional account on your Mac for your personal site.
    2. In this new account, set up the System Preferences so that if reflects your personal .Mac account info. Now launch iWeb. You should see a brand new iWeb window...no sites. Now quit iWeb.
    3. Now go back to your "family" account and make a copy of your Domain file (located at Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/iWeb/ folder)...
    4. Log in to your personal user account, move this Domain file to the same location but in your new account name.
    5. Now launch iWeb and you should see BOTH of your sites...family and personal. Now you can delete the family one and do a publish all to your personal .mac account.
    6. Log in to your family user account, launch iWeb and you should see BOTH of your sites...now delete the personal site and do a Publish All to your family .Mac account.
That's it! You have successfully separated your family and personal iWeb sites into their own login accounts on your computer! Now switching back and forth to edit and publish is as simple as login into the particular account on your mac.

  • NEED MY OLD WEB SITE REMOVED FROM THE INTERNET

I am no longer with Verizon but my old WEB site is still up and working and is causing problems by people using it and contacting people.  Need help to remove the old WEB site from the internet.
Who do I call for help?

    Hi there,
Not sure why you thought this question belonged in the home networking forum. However, my suggestion would be to log into your old site and add a script to redirect people to your new site. Sorry if that seems obvious but it's a simple approach to the problem.

  • Safari Mac can't access web site that Windows can

None of my Macs can access the site http://cards.123greetings.com . I get Can't Find Server messages in both Safari and Firefox. (Clearing caches doesn't help)
cards.123greetings.com is part of a large free card site that did a major upgrade in October. It still renders correctly on a PC running Windows XP Home which runs on the same network as the Macs, so it's not an isp problem.
Since both Macs (G4 iBook running 10.3, MacBook running 10.4) have the same Can't Find Server problem with both Safari and Firefox, it appears that some setting in the Macs themselves is causing this.
Any help or insight would really be appreciated - Thanks!

A big Thank You to Mulder for letting me know that you can access the site (with Mac Safari I presume) - That's good news.
The bad news: I still can't access the site.
The problem affects two separate computers and four browers. Taking your advice, I repaired permissions and logged in as a new account on both machines. Unfortunately that didn't work.
I next tried accessing the site on the MacBook through Parallels running Windows XP Home. The site came up fine using Internet Explorer.
Then I realized that Parallels operates with a different ip address. So I went back on the Mac using a proxy, and the site came right up.
It now seems that the ip addresses of both computers are being blocked at some level. I want to thank Mulder for replying and virtually ruling out that it might be a Safari issue. I'm now "off topic" and will no longer post in this section. But I'm also over my head... If anyone has advice about how to proceed now, I'd truly appreciate it.
    Thanks!

  • Need advice on web search engine

I may need to install a search engine for a asp.x web site I am working on. I know nothing about ASP.NET and the these are secure web pages. Also, this is for just a portion of the web site.I have no experience with search engines.
First question: Can search engines limit their search to just a section of a web site?
Second question: What would recommend for my circumstances?
    Thanks!

Answer to your first question: No, I don't want to provide a search engine to the entire site. There is a section you go in with several divisions. One division is the directory of services. The way that it's set up now is they have about 9 PDF files that are link to 9 headings. You click on a heading and it opens the PDF for that topic. The problem is that it takes a long time for the PDF to open and then the person may have to search it for the information they are looking for.
I think you may have answered my question already. If robot files are required to limit a search, then a search engine may not be the practical choice in my case.
By the way, to answer your last question, I am not coding in ASP.NET. I have made it clear to these people that I don't know a line of it. But I also think the solution to the problem is to convert the Directory to web pages, set up links of topics and maybe a JavaScript jump menu for linking to other bookmarked information. That way the searched is limited to only certain topics we decide beforehand but also limited to the directory.
What do you think of this solution? Do you foresee any problems?

  • Syncing iPod to new user account-need advice

Hey All! I set up a new user account for my friend on my imac, so he will want to sync his iPod Touch to iTunes, iPhoto, iCal, etc. in his new user account. I know there are plenty of freeware and shareware apps to get his music from the iPod into iTunes, but need advice concerning everything else oh his iPod.
I know I'll first get that pop up window that says his iPod is synced to another computer, and that I use "cancel" rather than "sync and erase". After doing that, I guess I use one of the shareware apps to get the music transferred over.
Now, after that, if I do a regular sync, will iTunes transfer his apps that are on the iPod?
Do I need to open iPhoto and download the photos on his iPod into iPhotot before doing a sync?
What about text messages? Will they remain in tact?
I don't think he uses the calendar on his iPod so no worries there....
What about Playlists that he has on the iPod? Will just the music transfer with the shareware apps or playlists also?
    Will Notes be saved?
Thanks for your help. Don't wanna screw up his iPod by setting up this user account for him.

Apps are tied to the ID I assume the new account is just on the iMac and not a new iTunes account?
Yes, you can import photos into iPhoto the same as you would off any camera.
You would need to transfer purchased content (like apps). You can't do that via sync as it's a new computer and all content will be erased as you are aware.

It is OK to leave your battery hooked to the charger most of the time. The only time I unhook mine from the charger is when I calibrate. You should calibrate your battery in the first few days. Then you should calibrate every two months or so to keep the battery fully functioning. If you use your MacBook infrequently, it’s best to re-calibrate the battery at least once a month.

  • Hey new to Macs need help getting one(s) running again...

    Hey all,
So I acquired some old Macs from a local schools surplus sale. I have managed to get one operational (a G3 tower) but am now trying to get a MacBook running and have had a few issues. I have gotten it to the flashing folder screen but have been unable to get it to boot from the HDD. The HDD drive works I have installed OSX 10.3 on the drive via firewire but it seems that the Mac wont recognize that the drive is there. When I get into the Startup Manager screen nothing shows up except the mouse (which I can move around). The MacBook is an a1181 with 1GB of Ram installed. Being new to Macs I have no clue on how to continue. I know Macs do not have a BIOS but is there something similar that can be accessed? What about Firmware updating? I would prefer not to have to take it (and others) to the local Apple store. Any and all help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I have the same MacBook (a1181) and had the same problem. My solution was to simply re-install snow leopard. Just buy a snow leopard CD from the apple store. Don't buy a mountian lion CD because it is not compatible with your MacBook. One you have the SL CD, insert it into the optical drive (CD drive) and boot the computer. When you hear the chime, press and hold down "C" on the keyboard and it should boot. If this fails, reboot and brews and hold option/alt when you hearths chime, then select the CD as it appears. Then simply install snow leopard, and enjoy your Mac! Hope this helps, and I will be happy to help with any problems or questions :)

Hi Solomon, and a warm welcome to the forums!
In iTunes>Preferences>Advanced tab you can set the iTunes folder location to an external or other location.
Also, how do I uninstall applications to clear up space?
Applications really won't clear up enough space, DVDs & Movies & such are the big users... my Applications & Utilities folders, (400+ APP & Utils), takes up lees than 4 DVDs.
