Hi Dano, and welcome to the discussion...
I don´t know if i could be more of assistance for you,and if you are a switcher from PC/Windows to Mac/OS X. But maybe as a tip,you can try "Google" it(your wonders). Like if you need a "all round mediaplayer",you simply type:mediaplayer for mac" up in the Google-window.
And there is allways a solution to try search in the "top" when you are in the dark. Like at safari you got a few folders there(Archive,Show,Bookmarks,).Do not be afraid of trying...
And there is a folder who say:Mac-Help. Type your questions there... And you never have to be afraid of delite them. They are allways one or some other places at your desktop... Even in your trash-bin... And you know about draging&droping things where you want it?
Hope i could help you a little piece on your "road"
Ps.Sorry for my BAD English

Apple has a site for new users. Use it. Also, David Pogue is an excellent tech writer who has penned a series called the Missing Manual. I assume you've come to the Mac from the Windows world and he's written one especially for switchers. I've linked to the version for Mavericks (10.9) but if you have an earlier version of the Mac OS he's written a similar book for them as well.

  • I have an older ibook, safari keeps crashing when I try to navigate beyond my home page. New to mac please help

I am new to mac and was given an ibook. When using safari it will crash every time I attempt to navigate beyond my homepage, I have done all system update and I am not sure what I need to do. Any ideas, tips, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you

This iBook has Mac OS X 10.3.9?  In the Menu Bar for Safari, under Safari, look for an item that says something like "Reset Safari."  You can try resetting Safari, including emptying its cache.
If that does not help, since this Mac is new to you and probably came with the software already installed (and previously used by someone else), you may want to create a new user account for yourself.  Under the Apple Menu, select System Preferences.  Go to the Accounts pane.  Create a new user account that is Administrator.  Make sure it is an Admin account.
From the Apple Menu, log out and log in to the new user account.  In the new user account, it should feel like using a new Mac, with most settings set to default.  Try using Safari, to see if the problem still occurs.  Actually, you may want to create a new admin user account, even if the Safari problem is resolved; it's the next best thing to doing a complete clean re-install to get a fresh start.  You can eventually get rid of the old user account.
FYI, that version of Safari that comes with 10.3 is pretty old.  The current version of Safari (or any recent version of Safari) will not run on 10.3.  You may want to download the latest Mac OS X 10.3.9 compatible version of more recent web browsers, such as Camino, FireFox, Opera, or iCab.

  • MacBook Pro keeps crashing...I'm new to Mac please help?!?!

On several occassions everything I had saved on my MacBook stopped working. All the icons I had once placed on my dock disappeared and my settings were changed. Some of the programs I had previously downloaded were no longer available and I lost all the information that was on it. In addition, my Idisk was removed from my desktop, the songs on my Itunes lost, and I wasn't able to even download all of the songs from Itunes (my friend downloaded the same album on his Mac and all songs downloaded). Now I tried to download AOL and it says "no mountable file system" and it works perfectly on my friends MacBook.
I've had this computer for 3 months...so I have NO IDEA what this means or what to do?! Can someon please help me? I use my computer for school and now I'm scared of using it because I might lose all my work.
To top it off (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint decide to operate and show me my documents whenever they want. I lost a midterm and had to redo the paper )

How do I eject my CD rom?

Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to mount it.
How do I eject my CD rom?
If there's a CD or DVD in the drive, press the eject logo for it in the Finder's sidebar. If not, press the Eject key on the keyboard, or if there isn't one, from the menu bar or by pressing F12 until it ejects.

  • New to mac,  please help - installer damaged!!!

i apologize up front this may be scattered and rambling but i hope it makes sense, as i am in panic mode!
I was recently trying to update microsoft office 2008 mac and once the download was complete it tried to install and failed! It said "installer is damaged" this may be due to administrator privileges or disk permissions, etc... blah blah blah... I did a permissions repair right before the update
I have been using my iMac for about a month now, im somewhat familiar with it and everything is running fine... this is the first time i have been worried... is this the installer for that program? or my iMac?
I hope i can still install apps on my iMac... what should i do ?
    please help, thanks in advance

    Hi Iturn,
When you say you tried to updated MS Office 2008 I'm assuming you already had it on your iMac and just tried to install the 12.1.5 update, is that correct? If it is I had a similar situation when I tried to update to 12.1.5. It wasn't an iMac problem it was an issue with the Office 2008. After calling MS support we did a complete uninstall of Office 2008 (don't worry you won't lose data files), then re-installed it and then downloaded the update. After doing the uninstall, reinstall and update it has been working just fine.
If you need help I would recommend calling MS, you will find the support number in it's documentation.

  • I want to make 4x6 study notecard/flashcards, how do I change the page size to fit the cards I need, I want them to print on a standard size paper, but keep the text in a 4x6 margin, new to mac please help!!

The Idea is to set my paper size and page layout to a pre-screened 4x6 layout, which I can add and insert txt/pictures, when I need to print, I should be able to fit 2 per page, if not that's okay, but when I print them I will cut off the excess paper and glue the rest to a notecard, any ideas, NEW TO MAC PAgES

    Star with:
Menu > File > New from Template Chooser > Sidebar > Page Layout > Blank > Blank Canvas
If you need to have two cards on one page then just set up one using text boxes and images to the 4 x 6 (inches?), group them and option shift drag a second copy down the page so you then have 2 and alter the copy as you need.
Change the text and images to placeholders, capture those as a Layout and then save that as a template.

    1. To make the individual card follow the instructions for Labels & Business cards but use your size:
    2. To make the placeholders see Double folded Greeting Card.
    3. To make the template follow Letterhead and follower sets ignoring the irrelevant bits, and only capturing one page, before saving as a template.

Hi, I have what probably is a simple question and I am just missing something. I am new to Mac so I am still figuring things out (got it about an hour ago). I would like to use iChat but I can't figure out how to do that? Do I have to download it? IS it already installed? Where can I get it? etc. I think once I know that I can figure out the rest.

  • I'm new to Mac, please help.

Recently purchased a MBP C2D, this is my first Mac and I really need Microsoft Office. If I run Window XP through bootcamp, is it possible to install Window's version of Microsoft Office and not experience any software conflicts? Thanks.

Yes it it and Office runs just fine under Boot Camp. You will need a valid Windows XP SP2 license and the same goes for Office. If this is your first time with Boot Camp just be careful to follow the instructions. While it's not difficult you just want to minimise the chance of something going wrong. Just be careful to think carefully how big you want the XP partition to be as yu cannot change it.
By the way, if it's only Office you need have you considered Parallels?
    http://www.parallels.com/
While it doesn't perform quite as well as Boot Camp it is far more convenient to use as you don't need to restart your MBP and it is far easier to share files between the two environments.

  • Downloads...i'm new to mac, please help!

I tried to download a windows media player for the mac, but once it downloads it just sits on the desktop and says that I need to find an application to open it. How do I download/open the media player...or is there a better media player than quick time that is more mac campatible?
    MacBook

    Hello and welcome!
If the compressed downloaded file is not in the "native" .dmg file format and in the "older" format like .sit or .bin, or even a .zip file format, then you will need the free Stuffit Expander, you can download it here:
    http://www.allume.com/mac/index.html
With this, you should be able to download almost all the mac compressed files on the net, cheers

  • I believe that I have a keylogger or some sort of spyware installed on my mac, please help!

I followed this procedure to check my files:
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
The following procedure will help whether your system has been modified. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

my iphoto wont open since i updated my mac, please help? it says i need to install an iphoto library upgrader which I have installed but still cant see my photos.

What version of iPhoto are you using? 9.6 is the current version.
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
