New to Mac's - iTunes "issue"

Hi all,
Just purchased my first mac today (only a mini I'm afraid!) Very very pleased with it so far but having an iTunes problem.
All my itunes library on my windows machine was/is installed on an external usb hard drive. The drive was instantly recognised on the new mini and I can play songs from the original library if I select them.
problem is, I can't get itunes to recognise and consequently load the library from this drive. I did the exact same as I did on the windows machine IE: change the default location of the library from the local disk to the external one, but whatever I try, it just won't load the library.
Any ideas?
John

Hello John welcome to the Apple Discussions the problem is one I have just finished discussing with someone else... the location setting for new imported or added music files in the advanced > general tab... does not tell iTunes where your music files are stored.... iTunes gains this info. when 1st added to library.... in Tiger if you move them around on the boot drive the system will keep track of them... if you move them elsewhere you will need iTunes to do the moving or tell iTunes about the move straight away after the move...
So all you have to do is tell iTunes about them and unless you move them iTunes will remember..
Set the iTunes preferences so no music files get moved when adding to the library and having iTunes organize them is a good thing... these settings are in the advanced > general tab where the location for any new music is set.. okay your changes if needed.
From the file menu select 'add to library' and choose the folder on the Ext HD with all the files inside and iTunes will do the rest...
Any skipping etc, try setting the Ext HD get info window 'ignore ownerships on this volume' and Apply
take care John ... TP

  • New to Mac and iTunes and need help!

    Hello all,
Just got my iMac over a month ago and have slowly been able to finally get a chance to use it.
One of the things I'm trying to do is figure out how to do this on a Mac what I used to do in Windows. Switching over has been tough, but I'm getting there slowly but surely.
I had a 3rd Party program for Windows called J River Media Center that pretty much did everything I wanted it to. One of the features I loved about it, was being able to take my music files and locate album art from the internet and add them to my files. I know iTunes does this but I haven't gotten a chance to use this feature yet.
I used to use dbPowerAmp to convert my FLAC files to HQ mp3 files (256-320) as well. Media Center would let me change the file name from the song info. I've been using XLD to convert my FLAC files to MP3 (if you guys have any suggestions on any better programs for Mac I'm always open). It's done its job so far. I haven't figured out how or if iTunes can change file names of my mp3 files from the song info [Artist - Song Name] format. This would be very useful for me.
My next question is, how and why does iTunes make new files everytime I try to make changes to files I play within it? I'm not sure how it works. Basically I copied some of my music from my external to a custom Music folder in Finder, and when I played them in iTunes, I tried to mass change a few of the songs to a custom genre. I found out the original files were not actually modified from iTunes and that iTunes made new files in the itunes folder? It still confuses the **** out of me. Wondering what some of you do to make this less of a headache?
Just one more small thing, can anybody recommend to me a good program for Mac that allows me to modify the Date Modified/Date Created attributes within files? When I put mp3 songs on my MicroSDHC card, I like to add songs in the folder and organize it by Date Modified. Newer songs I always put to the top, but if its an old song but new addition to my memory card, I typically just change its modified date to somewhere older in the folder.

Are you talking about renaming file names, or are you asking about using file names to assign tags to mp3s?  Either way, check out the Dougscripts web site for scripts that greatly increase the versatility of iTunes.
If you use iTunes with default settings it wants to copy files you add to iTunes to folder in the iTunes Media folder, and it insists upon organizing them as it wants to do it.  If you try to do otherwise it will either fight you or end up with you  messing things up and getting "can't find" links.  If you really want to do things as you want to then you need to change iTunes preference settings so you can organize music on your own, but this will slightly alter the behavior of other things in iTunes.  I do not let iTunes organize my music and have adjusted to other changes (not drastic).

  • New to mac and itunes is on pc

I just got an imac today and I have the mac and pc networked together and i am currently copying music and movies from pc to mac. I have authorized the mac in the itunes store, so does this mean my purchased movies will load ok into pod from mac? I have some of my movies downloaded onto pc and they are copying over to mac. They are mp4's, should there be any complications with these?
Finally, I know I have to change the ipod from windows to mac, will this delete what's currently on there and will I have to wait until ipod sync with library all over again?
I have never owned a mac before and except for doing taxes online this year, I have never even used one, so any tips or answers would be great.

If you click on the Apple icon in the upper left, the Apple Menu appears. Select "about this Mac". The ensuing panel will show you the version of OS X:
10.4 = Tiger, 10.3 Panther, 10.2 Jaguar. The last number would be the version:
Tiger is not at .8, Panther .9 and Jaguar .8
Mac Maintenance: Have a look at this MacWorld article regarding system maintenance. OnyX facilitates some of these processes, including "repair permissions, maintenance scripts and system optimization". The first two are necessitated by the Unix structure (the underlying foundation of OS X). Permissions sets out who is authorized to access certain files in the computer. The maintenance scripts are best described here.
Which version of the iMac did you purchase? Flat panel G4? Flat panel G5? Intel machine? Have a look at the right panel on Apple History.com to help you in identifying your machine.
There are excellent manuals on the market for better understanding and using OS X. As you become more comfortable with the machine and understand your related needs, post again to the forum in a new thread if you would like guidance about manuals etc.

  • New to MAC, 2 itunes accounts, need to streamline ?!?!

    Hello
I have a brand new macbook, and I have and ipod touch, in the past I had 2 accounts.
I would like to streamline both devices on new mac, on one itunes account.
I am not understanding how I can combine these for one itunes account/sign on?
I did get message to authorize this computer, not sure what next step should be?
I have 900 songs I can't afford to do the wrong thing!
    Thanks so much

You cannot combine iTunes accounts into one single account.
You can add all items from each account into your iTunes library and authorize iTunes for both iTunes accounts.

  • New to Mac - File sharing issue with windows PC?

    Good day
I have a win7 pc with all my movies storred on.  I shared the folder on the network, and can access the folder from my windows pc and my MacMini.
The problem is that my MacMini does not pic up all the files/folders on the shared folder.  I would guess it only picks up about 80% of the files/folders.  When I connect to the shared folder from the windows 7 pc it picks up everything.
    More info:
    Win7 Home (all updates done)
3tb drive (not sure what you call it, but it was formated with NTFS guid table)
Full read Write share enabled to everyone
    MacMini Latest hardware and OSX.
Shared folder shows in shared part of finder.
Already did a restart of both PC and Mac
Already did a clean-up on mac.
The mac connects via wi-fi and win pc via ethernet
Please help me on what more I can try

I've seen this a long time ago, seems SMB on the Mac was limited to the number of listings, if you Share an inner folder, does OSX show more files in that folder?
No idea if this works in 10.8, but will mention it...

Did you lose your shared folders with the update of Mac OS X from Snow Leopard to Lion? You can’t see your shared folders from your DVR or Medicaneter boxes hooked up to your TV? The internet tells you to install gigabytes of developer tools and use tons of command-line instructions to regain the ability to see your mac from your other devices in the house after moving to Lion? We might be able to help.

  • New 2012 Mac mini having screen resolution problem when I connect to either 27" LG or 22" Hannspree monitor. Tried mini display port to VGA/HDMI and HDMI to DVI-D cables... all same isse

New 2012 Mac mini having issues in connecting to third party Monitors. Connected my mac mini to a 27" LG monitor. Text looks blurred. Tried connecting to the monitor using 3 options. 1) mini port to HDMI, then HDMI cable to LG monitor. 2) Mini port to VGA, then VGA cable to monitor 3) HDMI port on mini mac to DVI-D cable then DVI to DVI cable... In all cases text is not clear. Anyone has similar issues with latest mini mac. The monitor works fine when I connect to a windows 7 Samsung laptop. Any input is highly appreciated. Thanks in Advance

Why do you use always 2 cables? There's a lot that can go wrong.
    1.) Hardware:
    - Use only one cable, best an HDMI->HDMI cable. It doesn't need to be an expensive one, they've proven to be no worse than those "esoteric", expensive ones.
    - Set the monitor to the HDMI input.
    - The modes you are listing are only "picture modes" changing color/brightness/contrast settings, not resolution or the likes, so pick the one you like best later, or enter your own settings under Custom.
    2.) OS X:
    - Usually the Mac detects the screen itself and chooses the best settings, so by default you need to do nothing than make a proper hardware connection to get a decent image.
    - However, there have been issues with new Mac Minis and particularly their HDMI ports. But reportedly they have been fixed with a software update. So, launch the App Store and check under Updates if there is one for you to install. If so, do it; otherwise you should be good to go.
    - If you require, go to System Preferences -> Displays. In the Dispaly tab, by default, "Best for display" should be selected, and that is typically true. If you want, select "Scaled" and 1920x1080, plus a frequency from the list (where higher is usually better, but just pick the one that works best for you). If you can't see a change to the better, you best go back to "Best for display".
    - If you are not happy with the colors on your screen, you'll find eventually more than one choice in the Color tab, though your particular screen should be in the list and its Display Profile should get you the best result. (Double-check picture modes on your display: if you're far off there, you won't make it much better with the Mac's settings).

  • New software update still not downloading.  Apps updates have all downloaded since iTunes issue resolved.  Is the software issue also related to this, or is there another problem?  This is on my iPhone 6, not my Mac.

Trying to download the iOS 8.2 software update on my iPhone 6, but it won't update.  All app updates have resolved since the iTunes issue was resolved.  Is the software update issue related to this as well, or is it another problem entirely?
I've synced it to iTunes, turned it off/on, etc., but still not downloading.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi DebC64,
So is the iOS 8.2 update not downloading to your iPhone, computer or both?
You have synced it to iTunes, that is an option to update if it's not updating wirelessly.  Please see if other steps help.

I'm relatively new to Mac and want to try and get the most out of the new MacBook Air.
My wife and I have been sharing the same Apple ID. We both have iPhones - she has a 5 and I've got a 4S.
We only have one copy of iTunes and we have been sharing the account. (She doesn't really use the computer for anything beyond writing the odd weekend assignment.)
Would I be better off setting her up with her own and making her as a separate user on the computer? Would this require much work?
In recent times with updates, we have a few problems with the duplication of texts and that sort of thing. Both of our texts are stored on the computer and that sort of thing. Also, sometimes texts I send her are sent through to me  from her, if that makes any sense.
Anyway, I don't really want to overly complicate matters when it comes to accounts etc, but I wanted to know if a fresh Apple ID would be the best thing or even a new user?
Any tips etc would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks in advance

I have this question too (0) Reply

Your question is almost too much a personal one, begging the question "do we (husband and wife) feel comfy sharing one account on the Mac"   maybe thats why nobody answered you.
It doesnt complicate anything, but it adds steps for switching accounts on the Mac/ purchases etc. of course
since your question is mostly personal, ..I wont answer THAT part of it, but creating a new account is easy.....messing with switching back and forth is also a personal preference 'issue' as well.   I prefer to keep things simple, but...........you and yours,  I dont know.......

  • Hi.. I'm new to mac, I've got a mac book air and time capsule is it possible to save music, video from iTunes Store directly to time capsule leaving my 128GB Mac free? If so  please help..

Hi.. I'm new to mac, I've got a mac book air and time capsule is it possible to save music, video from iTunes Store directly to time capsule leaving my 128GB Mac free? If so  please help..

You can move your iTunes library.. Apple have explicit instructions to do it. If the library is moved to the TC and accessed over wireless, the efficiency of the whole system will drop dramatically..
A file you download goes.. Modem---TC--Laptop--Back to TC--Store on disk. Double looping the wireless slows it dramatically..
As far as using TC for your iTunes.. you CAN.. but SHOULD YOU?
    Store files on the TC.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24380694#24380694
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.

When I get my new computer, obviously I will download Itunes. My Ipod still has all the music on it and the external hard drive is ok.
I don't want to "erase" or lose any information when I sync with a new itunes that is "empty"
What are the steps? After I download Itunes and set the folder location to my external harddrive what is next? Will Itunes recognize my IPOD? Will it load the music/list from my ipd or external into itunes?

" how can I sync my iphone to my mac book without losing all the music and pictures on it?"
You cannot.  Copy everything you want form the old computer to the new one, then sync it.
it basically says you have to erase your iphone to sync to a new itunes!
Correct Iphone will sync, or manually manage, with one and only one computer/library at a time. Syncing, or manually managing, to another will indeed erase the current content.

If you still have the crashed Win computer, you may be able to recover your music and movies from the hard drive. If you have a friend with a hard drive USB connection kit and a PC, they should be able to help.  Otherwise, check locally for computer services that might do that for you (I think Best Buy Geek Squad may be able to help). If the drive itself is in good shape, it shouldn't be too expensive.
