New to Mac.  Trying to set up some parental controls...

I am attempting to set up parental controls on my new Mac Mini.  I am getting an administrator log-in request asking for username and password.  I didn't set up parental controls yet so I have no idea why it is asking for this.  Is there a way to clear the existing username / log-in so I can create a new one?

When you first turned on your new Mac mini, you set up the initial user account. This is the administrator account. When asked for an admin password, use the password for that initial account.

You want to restore from the backup. Do not set up as new. You can read the article that Tom posted above, but it really is pretty simple.
Transfer any purchases from the old iPad into iTunes, backup the old iPad in iTunes and them sync one more time.
Connect the new iPad and when prompted during activation, restore from the backup that you just created and then sync with iTunes.
The new iPad should be identical to the old iPad, but you will have to enter some passwords again on the new device.
    Transfer purchases.

If you see the white WiFi bars in the upper left corner, that simply means that the iPad has detected a WiFi network, and that does not mean that you are connected to the Internet.

  • New ARCH setup trying to set a 32 bit bundle system

I just finish my isntallation of arch and KDE, I tried several DMs until KDE seems the one that won, now I am trying to set a bundled 32 bit system :  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … _in_Arch64 but as any of the other documentation this is referencing to use rc.conf and I am using systemd now since it is a new install.
can i just use rc.conf for this or any guidance on running that arch32 scritp?
I already downloaded all the lib32 libraries for X86_64 but it appears I am still running into issues running some 32 bit app, so trying to set a separate 32 bit system for it.

Its a bash script, you can still run it using rc.d start if you have initscripts installed.
Slightly longer version, write your own small service file to handle it (starting/stopping the script).
Noone has written a 'native' systemd (there isn't actually such a thing, but whatever) arch32 script yet. Xyne says he will get round to it someday, but he's not yet on systemd and doesn't yet have the time. Check the arch32-light package in the AUR for details.

  • New to MAC, trying to install CANON MP520

    Hello,
I'm new to MAC, I bought an iMAC 8,1 several days ago with operating system 10,5 (I guess?!...)
I'm still struggling to get rid of old window-habits, but first days working with this machine was fun!... until i tried to install my new flashy printer via wireless router...
The printer is a CANON MP520, the router a USR5461. Tried following the guidelines for installation provided by USR, but it doesn't seem to be up-to-date (Printcenter is not installed on my MAC while USR thinks it should be?!...). Anyway, tried it another way (a bit on intuition, a bit on forum searching) by adding it in printerlist:
    First choose tab “IP”
    Protocol: IPP
    Cue: nothing
    Host: ip of my router
Location: printer location as specified on router status page
Now, I downloaded a driver from canon website for MP520 on MAC, went pretty easy (downloading software is nice and easy on MAC, I must say), so I could select “CANON MP520” as driver.
OK, everything works fine, tried printing a page; result: error message “no pages found”
Searched some fora for a solution (in fact first USR website, but that didn’t help me a lot) and came up with this forum. I found a thread on a similar problem (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1605028&tstart=0), but to be honest, I don’t understand the solution (I tried re-installing the printer several times, same problem…)
It’s my first post here, sorry if this maybe is a trivial problem, but I’m new to all this and don’t know where to start looking for the solution, so if anyone can help me out here or redirect me to a more appropriate place to find help for this problem, please do so…
    Thank you!

Wish that Windows habits somehow related...
OS X has two kinds of print drivers - Carbon and CUPS. With Carbon drivers, the author/manufacturer gets to specify which comm protocol(s) will work. Your Canon driver is a Carbon driver, and works only with USB. IP printing > IPP is a CUPS protocol, and requires a CUPS-capable driver. Apple included Gutenprint drivers (CUPS drivers) to try to get around this problem (that they created by allowing two kinds of driver). You might need to update your Gutenprint to have your model supported (I'm not certain - you'll need to check):
    http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/macosx
Next issue - US Robotics uses a non-standard port number for IPP, so you'll have to use the Advanced IPP protocol so you can put in that non-standard port in the setup. (Click the '+' button to add a printer. This opens the Printer Browser. Then hold down the Option key and click More Printers; this lets you access the "Advanced" options from the first popup menu.) Select IPP using IPP or http (they're the same). Enter the URI like:
ipp://[IP address here]:1631/printers/[queue name] listed in USR manual

  • I have the new ipad and tried to set up my work email and it did not work.Tried several times, what is wrong?

I am trying to set up my work email on my new ipad3 and the exchange email is not working for me. What am I doing wrong?

Make sure your work it folks are ok with the pad.  They can tell device type, and some companies simply don't want pads on their mail systems. ( yes, I know....)
There is also usually another password entering the flow, your exchange password, that may be different than your normal password.  Give your friendly it guy a call.

  • Trying to set up some queue Variables

I am trying to set some options up in a script and am having a few issues getting them right. Below is the list of things i am trying to do...
Between the Queued label  and the QUEUE_START/Play Prompt step, we could add a Set Counter = 1  step
Between the  QUEUE_START/Play Prompt step and the queueStatus = Get Reporting Statistics  step, we could add an If step to see If Counter > 5
    - True = Goto the logic  that offers the call to the Front Desk CSQ via the Select Resource  step
    - False (fall through to the existing Switch int step)
Insert an Increment  Counter step between the Play Prompt and Goto QUEUE_START  steps
So my first question is I do not see a "SET Counter" tag to insert. I am assuming it is the "SET" tag I want but then I need to add acounter variable to add to the tag. So  not sure how to add that variable down in the lower box
    Thanks
    Dave Peter

I have a complete script attached
with all the variables needed to for call queueing ring back
and timing out after 6 minutes so that a Nurse
queue will ring to the front desk queue. I have not tested this yet but everything is in it.
Would be happy for someone to look over.
basicly this script needs to send to to 2 diffrent queues and then if call is stuck in Nurse queue for 6 minutes it should roll to the Main Desk queue.
I also am trying top figure out if I can make a sound play on the computer when the call is dropped in queue or is the only option to ring a phone?

  • New to Mac---trying (unsuccessfully) to transfer files from pc

Hi! I'm new to mac and I just got a MacBook Pro. I've been trying to transfer my songs, pictures, and files from my Dell pc (Windows Vista) to my new Mac but I'm having no luck. I have tried to connect the two using both an ethernet cable and a wireless network. When it prompted me for a username and password I just put in the username and left the password blank (b/c I don't have one on my pc) and it said the password had expired. So I went on my pc and created a new password. When I put the password in it now tells me that it just can't connect because of an "error." This happens both when using the ethernet cable and the wireless network. I clicked on the browse button (when trying to connect wirelessly) to see if the Mac could detect the Dell, but the only computer it can detect is the desktop (also a Dell running Vista) that is wired into the router. I really don't want to have to bring both the laptops to the apple store and I don't want to manually move them with the 2GB flash drive I have. Please if anyone can help me I would really appreciate it. Someone told me it may have something to do w/the configuration...
    Thanks
    Lisa

Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and enter "connect to windows pc" in the search field. The second article should help with what you want to do.
    Transferring music for iTunes:
    Geek to Live- How to move an iTunes library from a PC to Mac (and back);
Macworld - How to transfer iTunes libraries between PC and Mac.
If you wish to put your photos into iPhoto you will have to transfer the original image files such as JPEGs, TIFFs, etc. to the Mac then import them into iPhoto.
If you have an external hard drive available that will connect to your PC, then you can use it to transfer your image files and other files. The drive will have to be formatted FAT32 if you expect to write to it from the Mac. However, if you only need to read from the drive on the Mac, then it can be formatted NTFS.

  • The times new roman font is wider set on some of my document compared to others

I am writing multiple essays right now, yay college, in iwork Pages.  On one of them, the font has more space in between the letters and on the other is is more narrow set.  I have the same font settings (Times New Roman, regular and double spaced) for both of my documents so I can't figure out why the fonts look different.  they have about the same number of words and yet one of them is longer by almost half a page.  I like the way the wider-spaced font looks so I'm trying to figure out how to make the narrow spaced font  in one essay look like the wider spaced font in in the other essay.
    Can anyone help? :/

Check in Font Book whether you have 2 versions of Times New Roman installed, you may have got a second from an installation of MsWord.
Is one of the documents perhaps converted from a Word .doc?
    Also check:
    Inspector > Text > Text > Spacing > Character

  • Wow,  newer to macs and could really use some help!

    Heres the problem I have...
a while ago (november?) my power mac g4 dedided it no longer wanted an OS on it, so it pooped out tiger and was a very heavy paper wieght. I have no idea how this happened, or why... all I know is that I bought it without disks to put it back on.
recently I bought a universal version of OS X tiger 10.4.3 and planned on putting it on. when I get to the screen of selecting a HD to put it on, the one I have comes up unable to have it be used. I know it has to deal something with formating or something... the error I get is
"Youc can not install Mac OS X on this volume. Mac OS X cannot start up from the volume."
could someone walk me through STEP BY STEP of what I need to do and what choices I should pick so I can get my single HD to actually.. work?

Boot with the install disk, select your language, and, when the file menu pops up, select Utilities->Disk Utility, select the HD, click on the erase tab, format it Mac OS Extended, select install OS 9 drivers if the machine can boot from OS 9 and you have the OS 9 install disks, and click on erase. Quit Disk Utility and continue the installation. If that works, you're finished.
BTW, I strongly suggest that you get the disks that shipped with the machine from the seller or call 1-800-MY-APPLE and get replacement disks.

  • New to MAC - trying to sync iphone and Mac Pro with imac

    Hi,
Just made the switch to Mac. Purchased my Mac Pro yesterday, loaded .Mac, and plugged in my iPhone to the computer. Followed the steps to Sync iCal and contacts from iPhone and although it is registering there is a phone and downloading photos, it is not syncing anything else.
The steps I took were System Preferences, .mac, and checked the relevant boxes. It indicates syncing is taking place but the calendar on iPhone and Mac Pro are not syncing.
Could anyone help with advice? SHould I be able to sync easily between the iPhone and the Mac Pro with .mac?

You use iTunes to sync an iPhone - not *.Mac Sync* or iSync.
*.Mac Sync* is for syncing between Macs, and iSync is for syncing third-party mobile phones and PDAs.
