New to MacBook and wireless, What to do?

Help, I am new to laptops and the wireless connection. I do not even know where to begin. How do I get wireless service? Do I need to buy any other special hardware to get connected? Do I have to subscribe to a wirless provider? If so, which is a good one?
As you can see I really do not know where to begin. Please help.
Any Suggestions

if you're that much of a beginner (you don't even have internet access at your house?), i would suggest you get your local cable company come out and install high speed internet into your house and while they're at it, have them set up a wireless router. a wireless router is a piece of equipment that takes the internet and broadcasts it throughout your home. after you've gotten those two things set up, your macbook will recognize the wireless router automatically and you're online.
you're going to need a bit more help than what a forum can give you. good luck!

  • New mac mini and wireless keyboard

    how do I set up a new mac mini and wireless keyboard at the same time?

    Since the Mac Mini does not come with a Monitor, Keyboard or Mouse those are needed when setting up a Mac Mini. I don't know what brand wireless KB you have or if that even matters.
    I have an Apple wireless keyboard (bluetooth), Apple magic trackpad (bluetooth), and Dell DVI monitor. When I initially booted my new Mac Mini, the screen showed it searching for bluetooth devices. It found the keyboard first and then a few seconds later, the mouse. So, I had all devices to finish setup of the Mini.

  • New aluminum Macbook and S-Video

    New aluminum Macbook and S-Video
    It have come to the conclusion that the new MacBook's and MacBook Pro's can not output to S-video. I have tired the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI and then the Apple DVI to Video but no luck, the two do not connect as the Mini DisplayPort to DVI is missing 4 pin holes. I have tired Mini DisplayPort to VGA and then a VGA to s-video adapter but no luck, the MacBook did not even see a second display.
    Is there any hope to achieve my goal? I need s-video out for work and will have to exchange the computer for a Black MacBook if the new computer can not output to s-video.
    Any thoughts?

    _*It works!*_
    !http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3236/29803095101fb261f66ao.jpg!
    I, and many others, have been looking for a way to output video (composite and s-video) from the NEW Macbooks and MacBook Pro's sporting the Mini DisplayPort since Apple as yet to release such adapter. I use my computer to output video (s-video) for digital slide shows and presentations. If our new aluminum MacBook could not meet this requirement back to the store it would go.
    While searching the web for a adapter, converter or whatever could help get video out of the new MacBook I quickly learned ($10 later) that a simple VGA to s-video cable would not work.

    *NO GOOD!*
    I soon came across the PC to Video EZ. It is sold at several online retailers but I finaly decided to buy it from NewEgg.com (links at bottom of post). NewEgg is retailer I knew I could trust and get fast shipping from. I ordered the converter box on Friday and it arrived today (Monday) with standard shipping!
    Bottom line, the PC to Video EZ from GrandTec outputs video (both composite and s-video) at equal quality to Apple's own video adapters used on previous (pre-DisplayPort) computers. I, owning a MacBook Pro with DVI to video adapter, could not tell the difference.
    The device itself is small. It is nothing you would complain about carrying around and it gets the job done.

    The back of the unit has two VGA ports, one in and one out. You can use the VGA out port as a pass through so you can still have your computer connected to a VGA monitor while outputting to video. A feature I will never use but it is still nice to have, especially for desktops.
    Also on the back is the video ("yellow" composite) and s-video out.

    On the right side of the unit you will find a place to plug in the power adapter. Good news, its powered by USB. Bad news, the thing needs to be powered at all... More bad news, the unit does not use a standard USB cable. You better not loose the one that comes in the box! At least there are no power bricks to lug around and a simple USB to wall power adapter (like the one used with iPod or the iPhone) should also power the device. My testing showed that power is required.

    *USB power cable*
    The unit comes with every cable you would need which is a huge plus! Included in the box is a short VGA cable (3 feet, which is perfect), a s-video cable and a composite video cable.

    Although not as neat as an Apple Mini DisplayPort to video adapter would be it does get the job done.

    Pros:
    * Power supplied from USB ~NO BULKY EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY!
    * No software required! (works with Mac or Windows or any OS!)
    * Composite and S-Video outputs
    * VGA IN and VGA OUT for simultaneous TV/monitor viewing

  • Need INput and Feedback ON new Macbook and Wireless-NESS

    greetings all My sister just bought a macbook brand new from best buy...
    she has SBC Global high SPEED DSL at home, via a ethernet modem....connected to her PC..
    Macbook's are wireless capable..
    so how can we make this happen?
    1. what does she need to get Wifi access on her macbook? what do I need routers, Hubs, switches or what?
    2. if additional H/W needed, can you make recommendations on makes, models and pricing?
    3. Is there such a thing where your ISP gives you a modem that is wireless capable? if so how can I get one..
    THANK YOU KINDLY YALL
    oNe

    You need a wireless router. Some ISPs will provide them to you, but some of the provided hardware really stinks. You can consider several manufacturers. Linksys is good, Apple AirPort Extreme decent and much easier to configure. Get an "N" speed router with a built in gigabit switch.

  • Problems with new macbook and wireless internet!!

    i just bought a new macbook yesterday and cannot connect to my wireless network. i have it unlocked and my old ibook g4 and my palm connect just fine to it but this macbook is saying the network requires a password. every other computer just automatically connects and has perfect internet access with no password. why is this happening and is there anything i can do????

    Try simply hitting the "enter" key. that is entering no password. this has worked for me.

  • MacBook and Wireless

    While wireless is now a necessity for me, I have to say I am disappointed in the MacBook's performance. My friends with iBooks are able to get WiFi quickly and their connections are reliable. My newer MacBook, however is inconsistent in the extreme and I have not been able to find the cause. The Mac store put a new airport card in but it was even worse after that. I have noticed one peculiar oddity however. While I am waiting for the wireless network at work to come up (and I do mean WAITING) I have found that if I click on the airport icon in the computer's main menus I get the connection almost every time. I just don't like having to do that and am really tired of the tcomputer's behavior in this regard. What do you know about this? What is going on? Thanks.
    <Post Relocated by Host>

    Well, I think Apple is a great company, a culture unto itself, but for the first time, after owning four Macs, I am getting impatient with the tedious bugs in Apple products and the inferior builds compared with earlier Apple models. These bugs seem to be the result of constant and often unnecessary changes to products, generating an environment of complex variables that even Apple technicians don't totally understand. A weak wi-fi signal should not be a big mystery. Either there is something amiss in the outgoing signal so that the Macbook can't receive it or something wrong with the Mac itself. Well? How about some comments from Apple on this?

  • Macbook and wireless printing...

    I recently bought a HP Photosmart C4580 Wireless Printer. It's hooked up to my I- MAC and working fine. Does anyone know how I can enable my macbook to send documents so I can print to it? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!
    Thanks!!!

    What OS is on each computer? Is the printer directly connected to the iMac?

  • Macbook and wireless 2wire

    i have a 2wire wireless router and it woks perfectly for all my other home computers, but when i connect with my macbook pro, sooner or later the broadband will start flashing orange. what to do?

    This wireless connectivity Apple->2WIRE issue has been around for years. If you try to contact AT&T to solve the problem, they barrage you with basic troubleshooting suggestions that never really fix the problem. I'm sure AT&T has an exclusive contract w/ 2wire, so 2wire truley holds the responsibility for fixing the issue ... though they never have. I'm sure the number of Mac users is a tiny fraction compared to the amount of their Windows customers. Probably not worth their time or money to reasearch & develop a working remmedy. AT&T claims to be unaware of the issue & instead run you in cirlces with no resolution. (So extremely, that they've actually suggested that my 2Wire Gateway was defective. Sent replacement, no fix. Sent tech to home. Suggested rewiring phone lines in home! Still have Mac->2Wire connectivity problem!!!) I've since pursuaded AT&T to reimburse me for the purchase of an Airport Express ($99) to add on to my network to be able to reliably use my Apple wireless computers & devices. They did in the form of reductions to by bill for a few months to add up to the amount of the Airport Express. My problem was solved! ....though it ***** that extra hardware is required & AT&T denies knowledge of this half-decade-long known problem. I pretty much have two wireless networks running now, my 2WIRExxx & the one broadcasting from my Airport Express. While I never intended on connecting back to the 2Wire signal, I have been keeping my eye on forum & discussion boards over the years to see if anyone ever comes up with a fix for this mystery. I just found a thread from May '11 with an alleged fix. I tried it &, low & behold, It works! I've been logged onto my 2Wire signal with my MacBook Pro & iPad for two days now with no drops at all. I think this one's a winner! Try it out. I've copied & pasted the directions here:
    go into the wireless settings of the modem http://192.168.0.254
    go to home network -> wireless settings
    enter in router password
    go down to additional settings -> wireless mode -> CHANGE to "b"
    click save
    go to home network -> advanced settings
    go to private network -> click on 172.16.0.0
    click save

  • MacBook and Wireless Epson Printer won't connect anymore?

    I have a MacBook Pro running Lion OSX. I also have an Epson Stylus NX430. I had it connected to my laptop wirelessly and it worked fine. I went home for spring break and when I came back, I tried printing something, and my computer said that my printer was not connected. I checked the wireless settings on the printer and they were all correct. I checked my wifi settings on my computer and they were also correct. I couldn't get it to work so I unistalled the printer from the computer and tried reinstalling it. When I went to add wireless printers, my computer still didn't recognize the printer. Now I have to use a USB cable to print. How to I get my computer to recognize my wireless printer again?

    Forgetting the Network didn't work.  It's dong the same thing.
    So if it's a router problem, what can we do?
    Two devices work, and two don't...I just don't understand why.
    Could it be that too many people have logged into our wireless and now it's out of IP's? Could we ask people who have previously logged into our internet to delete it completely? I don't know if that would free anything up?

  • Issues with macbook and wireless compatibility with netgear router

    my macbook wireless is extremely spotty with my netgear router at home.
    the connection is sometimes very good, but other times, extremely unreliable.
    the wireless connection to the router is perfect, 4 bars. and it is actually within 10ft of the router itself.
    i use my macbook constantly at my college student center, and the connection to the network and internet is perfect...
    is there any way to fix my internet connection in regards to the netgear router?? (all other PC + PC labtops are perfect with it. its just my macbook that has issues)

    I have to agree with you.
    I have a Netgear Cable Router, my iPhone & my wifes iPhone, my Vista PC & my older Vista Laptop connect with out a problem and are rock solid to boot.
    My new MacBook Aluminium seems to be very tempremental at best. Dont get me wrong, i love my new macbook but i am a little unhappy that this is happening. Looking at others on this forum, it seems to be across the board so will happily await a firmware/driver update from apple.
    With any luck, this should be resolved shortly.

  • Help to get my photo art edit software working in my new computer.i saved a backup before my old computer died. i have a new computer now, and is what i backed up, all i need to make my new computer have what i had in my old/dead computer?

    help. am not a tech savvy person.
    i do art with a win vista computer filledwith photoshop cs3 and tons uf unbelievable plugins that were given to me by a now deceased ps wizard.
    that computer died. i now have a new computer, but it is of no value to me without the same art setup that i backed up into an ext hard drive.
    i have wetechies @ 300 usd/year trying to remotely do that. day 2, so far no success.
    i cannot afford to buy all that. i have cancer also, and with 6 months to live, friends have generously bout me a great computer for my art needs.
    but i need more than a computer. and i need more than photoshop. i need the programs n things in my plugins .
    does anyone know how to do that?
    my wetechies from india are on day two, and ony have given me a 1.16 kb pd icon!  then asked me if that was fine.
    i said  to them it is fine if it works! which it did not.
    tody is day 2, person 2 attempting this.
    is this an impossible feat?
    they are not familiar with plugins, but they do comp tech stuff.
    my cs3 extended and the plastic case bearing the serial #, bought for 900 usd, were stolen the night i was in the hospital having my mastectomy.
    i had the ps3 inside the plastic case in my living room drawer. when i came home, there  was a psc ( not extended )  in one of the 2 computer drawers.
    i am not sure why. but in the second drawer was my chest xray from the hospital???? i suppose ,since i never looked at it myself, it may have had my personal info needed for the thief to pose as me. also, my purse, with passport,all forms of id and my keys, were stolen on another day . but i have bad credit, so good luck to them.
    i want to spend my remaining time doing art. I even entered an art competition for charity. sponsored by Lilly oncology.
    i know of no one who did art in my building at the time which was in florida, where i was having my chemo and radiion, and first surgery.
    that computer, was broken, by someone trying to fix it. perhaps the only person i know who wopuld have an interest in the plugins as he was a photog and was familiar with the photog and ps wizard who supplied me my art stuff.
    wheredo i go from here, inexpensively, i was gifted the computer of my choice. it is awesome for art. but i wanta photoshop in it, which i do not use for much, but i do use the plugins.
    question-  is it true that my new 64 bit computer with win7 is compatible with cs3 and higher? as well as plugins tha are 32bit not 64 bit?@

    Whether your music purchases will be in the cloud will depend upon what country that you are in, and whether it is still in the store (record companies occasionally remove their music) - you can't add music to the cloud without subscribing to iTunes Match.

  • New Apple TV and wireless Connection Question?

    My son lives in Russia and works for the State Dept. He want an Apple TV. The problem is that he is not tech savvy. Does the Apple TV need to connect wired or wireless to the router or just to the laptop to stream. He has a wireless connection for the laptop but if he has to go through set up and connect it to a router, I will never be able to walk him through it from 10,000 miles away. I have the old Apple tv and have it connected to the router with a wired connection. But I guess my IMAC synchs with the old Apple TV to send programs whether it is hardwired to a router or not. I hope this makes sense.

    New AppleTv will connect via ethernet or wi-fi as before.
    You could more than likely just connect it directly to the laptop with ethernet to stream locally stored content,but you'd need to set up some kind of internet sharing for it to access any internet or itunes store features.
    AppleTV could also be set to work with an ad hoc wireless network from laptop but again internet connection would have to be shared over this, and it might be a bit fiddly too if router setup is going to be fiddly.
    Simplest would be to connect both to router with ethernet. Have you considered mains powerline ethernet adapters if running cables is impractical?

    I'm the same and can confirm the USB port has the power to run the drive when the Macbook's running off mains power, although I don't know if that applies when it's on battery power.

  • New White Macbook Dropping Wireless Signal

    Hi Everyone,
    I've read that a lot of people with 2006 Macbooks have been having trouble with their wireless signal through Airport dropping out. I'm having the same problem, but I have the newest white macbook that's been sent in two separate times to Apple for repairs.
    The first time was my computer was over heating and the plastic actually changed colors. The second was after having my computer back for only 3 days, my computer wouldn't even turn on. Turns out my mother board was faulty as well.
    Now, after having my Macbook back for only a month, my wifi signal is constantly dropping out. Even after upgrading to Snow Leopard, I'm still not having any luck.
    This is my first Apple computer, if anyone could be of any help, it'd be much appreciated. I'd hate to have to call and chew out Apple once again...

    Thanks for the reply to my questions.
    I have another that can be hopefully answered in regards to the client side ping.
    1. With the client side ping, if the clients computers network cable is disconnected and then reconnected will the ping properly re-establish its connection or is it up to the client application to do this process?
    2. Will the client side ping resolve the issue with half-open connections that 3.5 had?
    2. When creating the persistent queue objects on the server are there any special settings to set to properly configure the queues. When working with 3.5 I previously had the following:
    cmdtype=add
    obj.type=qf
    obj.lookupName=QueueConnectionFactory
    obj.attrs.imqBrokerHostName=localhost
    obj.attrs.imqBrokerHostPort=7676
