New to MacBooks - which spec do I need?

Hi all
Many thanks in advance for any help.
My current Asus laptop has died on me after 2 years (typically all my laptops last me 2 years). I have always had Windows laptops in the past.
I have an iphone and an ipad which is why I'm now looking to Apple for my next laptop. However, I'm finding trying to decide which spec I need a nightmare.
I'm looking at the new MacBook Pro retina model which has just come out.
Requirements as follows:
- On the whole, I have my laptop on all evening every evening and all day weekends.
- I usually have at least 4-5 browser tabs open at a time (eg always have facebook and twitter open in the background, then may be actively looking at at least another 2 pages at once). I also usually keep my mailbox open.
- I take a lot of large photos (18 megapixels a time) and use photo-editing software photoshop and lightroom (open the same time as all my browser windows)
- I don’t do any video editing or serious gaming. I don’t do any programming or web development or anything. My main usage is internet browsing and photography.
- I have a lot of music but currently signed up to itunes match which keeps it in the cloud.
- My current laptop screen is 15 inches. I have an ipad for on-the-move, I don’t really take my laptop out and about (possibly just because it’s too bulky). I feel like it could be a bit of a shock going down to 13 inches and possibly not the best for the photography. However the 15 inch models are ridiculously expensive.
It’s my understanding the newest OS will require quite a lot of memory.
Any help gratefully received. I’d be looking at the new mackbook pro retina models which came out last week. Customising them is possible, but I’m leaning towards buying from John Lewis and getting 5 year warranty which would mean I’d have to stick to the pre-configured models.

Having done photo editing with Photoshop on both the 13" and 15" I prefer the 15" for working but the 13" for traveling. Since I use an external display at work and at my home office the 13" works out fine. But if I had to use the 13" for all my photo editing I'd quickly sell it! The extra screen real estate is that important. I've seen nothing that suggests 10.10 will require lots more memory and the fact that the computer has an SSD mitigates against the need for lots of extra RAM. I do know that 10.9 isn't very happy with just 4GB and very unhappy with 2GB - when running on a computer with a mechanical drive but with an SSD 4GB is more than enough and 2GB is not bad. Given the extra oomph of an SSD, there's no reason to think that 8GB won't be enough for the next 4-5 years. Oglethorpe is also correct that you'll want to choose the largest drive you can afford.

  • Connecting new TV to Macbook:  which adapter do I need?

I have a Macbook White Intel Core 2 Duo 2 Ghz.
I am trying to connect it to my new Sanyo DP19640 TV to stream Netflix. I cannot seem to determine which adapter I need.

For the best picture, you want to use the Apple mini-DVI to DVI adapter:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9321G/B?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
and then a DVI to HDMI cable, like this one:
    http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-HDMI-Adapter-Cable-Meters/dp/B001TH7T2U/ref=s r11?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1281800506&sr=8-1
That will take care of the video for you. You'll also need a separate cable for audio. I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, but I'll get back to you!

  • Buying a new Camcorder.  Which one ??  Need Help

Hey guys, love the site and the advice. I am really learning a lot.
I have recently sold my Sony DCR DVD403 b/c it does not have a firewire and I cannot go though all of those steps on a weekly basis to convert videos to my mac.
Now, this is my first mac..woohoo!
In Decemeber I got a imac g5, 2.1 ghz, 1.5 gb, final cut express.
I am now in the market for a good camcorder to have fun with. I am in the range of prosumer. Maybe from 1000-1500$ unless you guys can convince me otherwise.
I have been looking at the Panasonic gs400 but gotten mixed reviews. I also looked at the sony hdr hci, but i understand you cannot burn your HD footage to DVD's???
The new panasonic gs500 is coming out in a couple weeks, but have no idea of quality!
I am looking for experience here. What do you guys suggest as far as a camcorder that I can use weekly with family, friends, weddings, etc and edit as gifts and hopefully learn enough to open my side business.
    thanks.

    Hello Jack,
It is always a big deal to figure out what camera to buy. So many pro's and con's and the best bang for the buck. We're all in the same boat. In the Digital World, there is one point that can make the descicion on Acquisition and Editing very simple. What will your output be? You admit that you are just beginning and that your goal is to share video experiences with friends and relatives. Today, that means via DVD or Internet. Since you have a Mac and have FCX-HD, you have an excellent base to learn from. Good start.
Now you want an Aquisition Tool (Camcorder) and you would like to go in the right direction. It is a popular opinion, at this time, to think "Evergreen". That is, buy something now that will serve you well in the future; grow with the changes in technology. A good thought, but not always practical. You have the right computer that will be good in the future. You have a good editing platform that will serve you well to produce the video's you are dreaming of. FCX-HD will teach you an editing system that will allow you to grow with a more complex system (FCP) if the future deems you need it. The most important thing for you to consider right now is getting the most editing experience you can. This is truly the most honest advice anyone can give you. To get the most editing experience you will need a video source that can be easily captured into FCX-HD. That will be DV SD, not HD. The FCX and FCP editing platform is based on the marvelous QuickTime file system. Video signals captured by a camcorder have the video and audio signals for each frame locked together. DV SD video when captured to a QuickTime based editing system is seperated into video and audio and Timecode added. HD video remains as a "stream" output and will only conveniently work in systems like iMovie and iDVD. To make HD work in FCP or FCX all the captured video needs to go through a very long process of Rendering. This is an important point. Many people pass over that fact like it isn't there; they are enamored by the sales pitch of HD. This is confusing enough and professional experience is speaking here. Also, the issue of 1080i, 720p or card versus tape hasn't even been discussed, yet. Confusing! HD is in the future, yes. For archival reasons many pro's have begun to shoot HD with the intention of using the HD media in future HD releases. This is also the course that the camera manufacturers want everyone to take.
The summation of this long explanation comes to this. Choose a good DV camera, like a used VX-2000, as someone else suggested. Start shooting, capturing and learning to edit. Don't go into business right away. Take some time to learn how to polish your "look". It will be less stressful and more rewarding. You will then impress your friends and that will start your customer base. If you want to be good at what you do, you will start and restart several times before things are on a roll. That's evolution. If you don't master the editing - all will be frustration. Choosing HD at this time will most likely cause you nothing but that. Shooting DV SD will get you into editing quicker and believe me, even FCX-HD has a steep learning curve,; but it is really powerful. Convenient capture and editng will teach you the most about video, and today, that means shooting DV SD. Buying a good camera like a used VX-2000, will also mean that in the future when you want to change to a new camera, yours will sell easily, because you made a wise choice. That DV-SD video that you previously captured will probably be already disseminated as SD DVD's and you won't care about it much anymore. Actually DV-SD will be able to be converted to HD, if you need to. Another cumbersome point, is that to watch an HD stream from your HD camcorder to an SD-NTSC set recquires conversion (like an AJA converter) which adds more expense.
Hopefully this argument for editing experience will get you on the right path. After all that, Welcome to the World of Final Cut; a place of wonderful creativity. And Welcome to the World of Mac!

bought a new powerful iMac. For my purposes, which product will best suit me?  I have already got a website designed by myself but this needs updating and changing as my business evolves.

Forgive me, but that's a "Do I need a Porsche to drive to the mall?" question. Without knowing what specifically you do on your web page, we can't advise. Sure, we could tell you to get PS CS6 Extended and have all the options (which you may never use), but jsut as well PSE or Fireworks could suffice....

  • Macbook - IOS 10.5.8 Need Upgrade Help

I have a 13 in Mid-2009 MacBook Pro (Specs below) and need to update my OS since I'm no longer able to install Java Updates (computer used for web and MS office). How do I go about getting this upgraded? Do I need to upgrade to an OS before Mountain Lion? Thanks for help.
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model ID: MacBookPro 5,5
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
    # of Processors: 1
    # of cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3MB
    Memory: 4MB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

There is no safe version of Java for Mac OS X 10.5.8. You will need to either diable Java or upgrade your system. Although your machine should be compatible with Mountain Lion, you don't necessarily want or need to jump ahead three versions of Mac OS X. You should be able to update to Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) and update to the latest version of Java 6. (Note that, on Mountain Lion, installing the latest Java 6 update removes the web applet plug-in, which can only be restored by installing Java 7. Java 7 won't work in Snow Leopard, but I don't know if the Snow Leopard update removes the plug-in. That would be a question for the Snow Leopard forum.)
If you decide to upgrade to Mountain Lion, you will have to upgrade to Snow Leopard first anyway, so you might as well take that intermediate step first. Snow Leopard can only be obtained at this point by calling the Apple Store on the phone and ordering it.
For more about the security implications of using Java, see Using Java in Mac OS X.

  • Macbook Aluminum vs. New White Macbook?

I just bought a brand new Aluminum Macbook, which is no longer in stores. I spent $1300. I believe I got ripped off. Do you suggest I keep this Macbook or return it and buy the new white Macbook? I do like the aluminum design more then the white though. lol. Suggestions or Recommendations are appreciated =]
    Here are the specs:
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB DDR3 memory
    250GB hard drive1
    8x double-layer SuperDrive

You can get a NEW Macbook PRO for $1149. It has a FireWire port too.
Do you suggest I keep this Macbook or return it and buy the new white Macbook?
No. Return it and buy the new Macbook Pro.
The white Macbook has no FireWire port.

That is Pages for iPad v2.0, which Pages '09 v4.3 can't read.
You need to either stick with the older version of Pages on the iPad or get Pages 5 for the Mac which is only available if you are running OSX 10.9 Mavericks.
Unfortunately that is not the end of your woes because Apple has made iCloud convert the files to Pages 5 now, and Pages 5 has over 90 features deleted on top of doing a shocking job of converting older Pages files.

Unfortunately there is little you can do, Lion will not run on your machine.
However it is possible to access some features of iClould while staying with SL. If you go to iCloud you will see the web interface for the cloud.
Some but not all functionality is here. Check it out and see if it meets your needs.

I got a new laptop (Macbook Pro) and my IPhone is synced with my previous laptop (which I no longer have). I've recorded dozens of very long (un-emailable) Voice Memos over the last few weeks and need to get them from my IPhone onto my new laptop.
    How do I do this?
(when I click on the Sync option I get the warning: "Are you sure you want to sync music? All existing songs and playlists on the iPhone will be replaced with songs and playlists from your iTunes library." I fear that if I click this I will lose all of my important Voice Memos as well)

Just to add to what ChrisJ4203 said.  You can sync them to your new computer using iTunes by selecting to Include Voice Memos on the Music tab of your iTunes sync settings and syncing.  However, you still need to re-establish syncing with the new computer without iTunes erasing all the iTunes media from your phone (as the warning mentioned).
If you copy your entire iTunes folder (not just your music) from your old computer to your new one, along with other non-iTunes media you may be syncing with iTunes (such as contacts, calendars and any photos synced to your phone from your old computer) by using migration assistant of following one of these methods: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527, then when you sync again with your new computer it will recognize your phone and sync as it did before.  You will still have to authorize the new computer for any Apple IDs used to purchase from the iTunes and App stores (in iTunes>Store>Authorize this computer).
After that you can sync your voice memos to your computer as mentioned earlier.
If you want to archive your voice memos before you do anything with iTunes, you can use a 3rd party program such as PhoneView or Touch Copy.

I get error 6. I would like to get my software up and running on the laptop again please

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

  • I had iweb on my last computer - bought a new 2013 macbook pro a few months ago and it's gone.  I have a webpage I build on it and now I need to get back in to update it.  Help.

i had iweb on my last computer - bought a new 2013 macbook pro a few months ago and it's gone.  I have a webpage I build on it and now I need to get back in to update it.  Help.

Well of course you won't have iWeb on a new MacBook from this year.  iWeb has not shipped on new Macs for a long time now and Apple has not sold iLife through its stores or online for over a year and does not support iWeb any longer.
If you want iWeb now, you will either need to purchase a new copy of iLife or try and find the old install discs from your old Mac and re-install iWeb from that disc.  It also depends on what iWeb version you were using too - iWeb 08 or 09?  If 08, then this is not compatible with Mavericks which will be running on a new Mac, so you'll need iWeb 09 for this.  If you can find your old install discs and they are iWeb 09 then go ahead and use these, but if not, you will have to purchase the iLife 09 or 11 boxed set from Amazon and both of these contain iWeb 09 and you can then install it.
Also, when you set up your new Mac, did you migrate info over?  If you had built a website on your old Mac, then you need to data file where all iWeb info is stored and that is called your domain.sites file and you need this file to be transferred if you want your website back again.
Can you get access to thhis file on your old Mac and transfer it?  If you can then fine, you can access your website again, but if not, you are out of luck and you'll have to re-build your website from scratch using iWeb.
If you don't have iWeb, then now might be a good time to move forward and look at the many alternatives that are out there such as RapidWeaver, Sandvox, and EverWeb which is billed as an iWeb replacement and is very much like iWeb, but with SEO and the ability to create drop down menus built in (check out http://www.everwebapp.com). Other alternatives also include Flux 4, Freeway Pro and Express and WebAcapella 4.
Have a look and most of these allow you to download free trials so you can try before you buy.

If you purchased a computer from another person, you need to wipe it clean.  To do this, click on the link - Erasing disks securely
Depending on your model Macbook Pro...
Start up from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and select the disk and click erase - to securely erase data click Security Options and Erase Free Space which will entirely wipe your disk, overwriting it with zeros so that no data is recoverable.
