New to Macs - desparate for help.

Hi all--I've seen nothing but decent answers here so I figured to give it a go and hope for the best.
I've just recently bought an iMac G3 at a yard sale. I purchased it from a friend who acquired it from her father. While I am no stranger to things techie- this system and its issues are a bit overwhelming. Its running 256mb RAM on Mac OS 9.2. I should start by explaining that the system is completely intact, software and all. My difficulties are in implementing internet through my digital cable modem (I have TimeWarner Cable). I've tried to do a number of configurations with an ethernet cable, but to no avail. I've also heard that I can set up a network on my PC and allow the iMac to piggyback off that connection as well as transfer compatible files from PC to Mac.
Is there a factory reset option that resets the system to "out of box" status? Maybe I could set up everything from scratch. (I don't have any actual OSs or anything).
Please MAC gurus...help. Any sound advice would be most humbly appreciated.

Hi, bylmdman78 -
Part of this has been covered before -
• Settings -
  - in the TCP/IP control panel, set
    Connect via    -to-    Ethernet
    Configure    -to-    Using DHCP server
  - in the Internet control panel, be sure to enter the appropriate info on the E-Mail tab
• AppleTalk - unless you need to have AppleTalk enabled in order to connect to an ethernet-connected printer, set AppleTalk to connect via a bus other than ethernet. Having it enabled and set to use ethernet can sometimes interfere with other communications on that bus; unfortunately, just turning it off is often not enough.
• Ethernet Cable - there are two kinds of ethernet cable, Crossover and Patch.
    - if your iMac G3 is connected directly to the cable modem, and your iMac G3 is an early model and the cable modem does not have an auto-switching ethernet port, you will need to use a Crossover type ethernet cable.
    - if your iMac G3 is connected to the cable modem through an intervening hub, switch, or router, and your iMac G3 is an early model and the hub/switch/router does not have an auto-switching ethernet port, you will need to use a Crossover type ethernet cable.
    - if the iMac G3 is an early one and the cable modem or intervening hub/switch/router does have an auto-switching port, or if you have a later model iMac G3, you can use either type of cable (Patch or Crossover).
Article #42717 - Apple products that require an Ethernet Crossover cable
• Device connected - many Macs will disable the ethernet bus during startup if a live device is not detected as being present on the bus at that time. This means that the device the Mac is connected to, modem or hub/switch/router, as applicable, must be on and warmed up a couple of minutes before starting up the Mac.
• Preference files - it can sometimes help to throw away the file named ASLM Preferences, then restart. This will cause a new prefs file by that name to be created.
• Specific extensions - be sure that both the extensions named Shared Library Manager and Shared Library Manager PPC are enabled in Extensions Manager; ditto any extensions whose names include OpenTransport or OpenTpt.
Minor correction on OS version - the last OS 9 version is OS 9.2.2. The last retail OS 9 Install CD released was OS 9.2.1, but there is a download update available for OS 9.2.2. Some later model Macs (such as some G4 Quicksilver models) came with a separate install disk for OS 9.2.2 - although this was a bootable disk, it was a model-specific one, usable only on the machines it came with.

just want to know if i can upgrae my os to osx
Yes. You should probably use Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5; note that Mac OS X 10.5 doesn't support Classic. If you're looking for other Mac OS 9 browsers, try iCab and Classilla.

  • New to Macs and need help with communication error in video chat

Hello! I have the same problem with video chatting that many others are having with errors -7 and -8. I am brand new to macs, and while I understand what the other threads are talking about about changing ports and settings, I don't exactly know how to do those things on my new system (iMac with OS X tiger 10.4.8). My quicktime settings are set to 1.5 and my iChat port is changed to 443. I have been able to connect with one person via iChat video on a different network, but I was given the above errors when I tried to connect with someone else tonight. I am using my built in airport with a Lynksys WRT54G broadband router. Please let me know how I can go about fixing this problem. Thank you!

  • I have migrated everything from my windows PC to my new Apple Mac, except for all my Outlook information.  Thunderbird recreated the information, but without an "sbd" ext

I have tried Thunderbird to migrate all my Outlook mail, contacts and address information from Windows to Mac but it didn't work.  It didn't give me an 'sbd' extension even though it recreated allmy information in Thunderbird.  There was no way for me to export the information from my Windows PC to my new Mac.  Can anyone please help me.
    Gail1401

O2M (Outlook2Mac) is the only migration app that I have ever found that works to migrate Outlook pc mail, contact, and calendar data to a Mac.   At $12.95 it's a steal.
It sounds like what you actually did was import your Outlook mail on your pc to Thunderbird on your pc.
Note 1: O2M runs on your pc.  It converts your Outlook files to a format that can be transferred to a Mac.  After you export your Outlook mail & contacts you still need to move (copy) them to your Mac and import them into whatever mail/contact application you are using on your Mac.
What mail/contact application are you planning to use on your Mac?
Do you need assistance with copying files from your pc to your Mac?
Note 2: .sbd files are Thunderbird files.  They are optional and are associated with Thunderbird mail subfolders.  They have no bearing on migration from a pc to a Mac.

  • New to illustrator, looking for help

    Hello,
I'm new to illustrator (3) and would like to make kayak station molds and outlines using a table of numbers (offsets).  Can anyone help me on how to do this ?
I found this image on the net, i'm also using a laptop.
    A table of offsets

That can easily be done in Illustrator. There is nothing about it that would require CAD software. Just use ordinary drafting techniques.
The sections could be drawn full scale, so no need to manually workaround Illustrator's (infuriating) lack of user-defined rulers. Simply set your grid to correspond to the ruler units you want to use (the ft or centimenter offsets). Zero your rulers to the Artboard origin. Measure your offsets from the left and bottom edges of the Artboard. The exact steps could be any of many different procedures. For example:
Rectangle Tool: Click (don't drag). Enter overall height and width of a section.
Transform palette: Select its left bottom corner as the reference in the 9-point proxy icon. Enter x and y values for vertical and horizontal offsets. That rectangle is now the "bounding box" of your section shape.
Similar simple operations can be used involving the Line tool, to numerically position direct-selected anchorpoints, whatever. You only have a few values in the tables, so this would not take long to do manually. If it were more involved, a script could be written to draw the whole thing programmatically, but I hardly see the need for that in this. I dare say many home builders of kayaks and sailboats use nothing more elaborate than a program like Illustator to make their working drawings and patterns.
The profiles could be drawn to a convenient scale (half, quarter, etc.) and even projected to flats using ordinary drafting techniques in Illustator.
To help you further would require my speaking with you in more detail about what you actually have, where you are in the process, what exactly you need to draw, etc.--Not practical in an online forum. You just need a general understanding of working in Illustrator. Then, if you have a basic understanding of 2D drafting, you'd know how to do this in Illustrator.
I see nothing particularly challenging about it, and would not hesitate to draw it in Illustrator. (Except that, since I have them available, I'd use any other drawing program that provides the basic conveniences of user-defined rulers, callouts, and dimension tools. That would include Draw, Canvas, Corel Designer and others.) But again: This is a simple project, and could even be done in Illustrator, and just as accurately (for all practical purposes) as in a CAD program.

  • New to the forums, not new to Mac. Need help on failing hard drive.

Hello, glad to have found this forum...I need all the help I can get. Let me explain what I have, what it's doing, what I want it to do, what I "think" I need to do.
    *What I have:*
733 G4 with superdrive, 512 MB SDRAM, 40 & 60 gig internal original hard drives
    *What it is doing:*
For about a year one of the drives (seems to be my 60g start-up drive) has made clicking/popping noises not unlike when you click/cluck your tongue. I've ignored it, foolishly, and gone about my business. Then I began having to click the mouse and punch keys when I start-up in order to get the drive to begin spinning, otherwise it would never kick in and I'd get the "?" face. Anyway, I have been living like that for many months until recently when my start-up drive only had about 500MB left of space, I burned some DVD's and freed up about 6 gig on the drive for some cushion the other day. Well, since doing that, when I start up now I get a spinning globe. I have to hold the option key down at boot and then select the drive manually and I'm back to being fine again.
*What I want it to do:*
I'm freaked out about losing data because I am a photographer and graphic designer, so I would die if I lost any files. I have been using one of my old iPods as a back up drive to dump data on and burning some DVD's too...but still, I have most of my life still on the drive. Here is what I am considering. I would like to get an external drive to move and continue to grow my massive files for my work and creativity. I'm thinking the G-Tech 320 Quad external would be a good fit. Now, moving back inside, my 60g start-up is telling me it's failing and to back up and replace before...well, you know. My 2nd internal drive is 40g and is strictly my iTunes library of MP3s.
How do I save myself and replace my start-up drive?
Do I buy the G-Tech first, move all my files over, then replace the internal, failing 60g? Can I start-up from the G-Tech? Should I/Can I make my 40g the temporary start-up, replace the failing 60g, and go from there? How should I do this and must I get the G-Tech now?
While on this same question, I am getting conflicting information regarding how much my 733 G4 will recognize as far as each drive size. What is the max size each drive can be? What is the max combined?
*What I think I should do:*
I think I should buy the G-Tech, move my life over there, then use the working 40g as my start-up, replace the failing 60g with the largest possible when possible, make the replacement internal the start-up again, use or replace the working/existing 40g as storage/back-up, live happily ever after.
    *And on a side note:*
I plan to drop two sticks of 512MB memory, this filling it up to it's max 1.5 gig of memory. Will this have a noticeable affect on my computer? If so, how?
Oh, and the reason I was opting for the Quad G-Tech is because can't I upgrade and add FW800 ports to my G4 rather easily?
Thank you for any time or effort you give me in helping me through this urgent matter. I had run out of places to go and people to ask before running across this forum.

First of all I cannot believe you have no backup strategy and only start to worry about it after problems arise. You're an accident waiting to happen. Before you consider anything make backups.
    Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
You can begin addressing the problems with your hard drive(s) after you get your stuff properly backed up. Once that's done get two larger drives for the computer and replace the small ones you now have. Your model should support hard drives up to 128 GBs in size. There is not specific limit on external drives so your external backup drive can be large enough to be partitioned into multiple volumes large enough to backup at least one of the internal drives (using the second internal drive as a backup for the first internal drive. This provides redundancy - an internal and an external backup.) You can then use the additional space on the external drive for your data files.
BTW, you risk catastrophic data loss by allowing the free space on your startup volume to drop below 3 GBs.

  • New to MACs and need help with a built-in video camera in MACBOOK

My mother and father just purchased a new MACBOOK a few weeks ago. They reside in Florida and we live in Indiana. We have a wireless camera that is connected to our wireless router. We call my parents and talk to them while we are on camera so they can see their grandchild.
I just found out their new MACBOOK had a built-in camera and I'm wondering how we can set that up so we can see them at the same time? Our child would love to be able to see his grandparents while we talk to them.
Our wireless camera has a built-in server and runs to a specific spot on our website so they can access it. But I don't know how the MAC works or what to do to tell them to set up the computer so we can see them.
Can someone direct me to some instructions on what I can do or give me some direction? I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks!
    John

I use a Dell Dimension for my computer. I do not use Skype at all. The wireless camera we have on our home network is a Dlink 900. It does not have any sound capabilities so we were not too worried about being able to have a true "video conference" with their laptop. We jsut wanted to be able to see them. I don't know if that video image can be sent to a webpage (like our d-link camera does) or not. Or, maybe there is a much easier way of doing this that I'm not aware of.
    Thanks for your response.

  • New to inDesign - looking for help with creating booklets

Looking for a tutorial/answer on how to set up my book so that the pages can be printed, folded in half (like a brochure/magazine) so that I can bind the pages myself in a book.   Not sure if my page size would be what I want the finished book size to be or if I need to double the page width setup size, because I will be folding them in half to put the book together.  I know there must be a magic button as well that will sort the pages and keep them in the right order, once I fold them.   Does this make sense to anyone?

  • New to java looking for help.

I m using mysql n linux RH 8.my data is like this as shown below

    remarks(Field name)
Now what I m looking for is I retrieve the value from remarks and that
value I want to scroll below the web page.I manage to retrieve the value but don't know how to scroll below the web page plz help .
    Thanx in advance

You could use a classic javascript for this. There are lots of javascript forums on the net, they could help you out. The main problem is that you have to put your DB password in the script. This is not a very safe solution.
If your web server supports JSP, use it. It's nice, easy and server side :)
    http://java.sun.com/products/jsp/
Maybe writing an applet is the easiest solution. This way you have the best control on what is painted on screen and, more importantly, you don't have to show your passwords.

  • New to Mac. Need help with my Quicktime Player.

NMy husband just bought me a MacBook Pro with Lion. I emailed a few videos I took on my iPhone and triex to play them with Quicktime 10.1 and it doesn't play. Ive read through here and someone suggested downloading Quicktime 7 and I did that. When I go to play the mov files it says, they are not a movie and can not be played. What do I neex to do to fix this issue? Thank you!

Quicktime X is a great little piece of software. However, Quicktime X is very finicky on which codec/file format it can decode/play.
Luckily, there are DOZENS of alternative video/media players and extensions available for the Mac. Some of them are even FREE. Some of the better FREE ones include...
    PERIAN (quicktime extension)
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22923/perian
    QUICKTIME 7.6.6
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
    VLC Media Player
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/5758/vlc-media-player
    NICEPLAYER
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15136/niceplayer
... And if none of those work, there is a possibility that, that video file may be corrupted.

  • Any screen problems or kernel panics on the new 2011 mac air? Help!

I want to buy a macbook air but i now that the old one (2010 late) has some problems - screen flickering, kernel panics and eventually death. I want the new ait but also i want a computer to work fine, not with problems. Thanks guys.

reinstalled the OS from the original CD with the wireless USB adapter attached and got a kernel panic, while booted from the original Mac install CD...
Apple states that no external devices are can be attached to the Macbook when doing an install. I suggest an SMC reset and then reinstall your system exactly according to Apple guidelines. When you get to the point of wanting to attach your wireless USB device - don't. It's entirely possible there are issues with the system and this USB product that have not been documented.

  • New 2 Mac...HELP! my resume is a MS Publisher file

what is the easiest way to move my resume to my mac? my wife is shocked that i spent this much money on a computer and ca't even open my own resume. it was a beautiful 11x17 bifold publisher doc. i feel silly. i kept on saying that there isn't anything that i couldn't do on mac...DOH! what can i do?

Pages should be able to handle any reasonable page layout issue you have -- I use it regularly in our organization for professionally printed documents, and have been extremely pleased with the results. Although Adobe InDesign and to a lesser extent QuarkXPress are the standard "pro-level" tools for page layout, they are rather complex and not terribly straightforward to learn, as well as very expensive. I would definitely not recommend them for someone without a lot of experience in this area.
Pages can produce beautiful documents with an ease-of-use that is unparalleled in similarly-capable software. It's not "industrial-strength", in that it doesn't have all the bells-and-whistles of pro-level tools, but 95% of the time those features aren't needed at all. At $40 (the cost of iWork divided by two), it is a steal.

  • DESPARATE FOR HELP! - iDVD is not burning!

I made a 13 minute movie in iMovie and imported it into iDVD. In the "Cutomize" tab, under "Status" my DVD Capacity is 1.0GB of 4.1GB and my Motion Menu is 4:14 of 15:00 and I allowed the "Background Encoding" bar run until it read "Done" (Which was a previous suggestion from Apple). I even previewed the movie in iDVD and everything is running smoothly. And, I know my burner works, because I just made a couple of music CD's. Also, I am not running any other programs while trying to burn this. Any suggestions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thank you!

    Sue,
I do believe I have a Super Drive. I have burned my imovies many times before and I use DVD-R's. I have only had a similar problem one time before and an Apple specialist had me try what I mentioned in my first post about waiting for the status bar to read "Done", then burn and I was successful in burning it. Now I have done the same thing again and nothing is happening. Let me add something that I did not before. After I click "Burn" and the DVD-R goes in, I do see the "process" of "Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, & Stage 4", however, it seems to but stuck on "Stage 4". I am burning one right now, as I type, that has been burning for 5 hours. I don't think that's right. And yesterday when I tried burning it, it was well over 8 hours so I stopped it and the DVD-R did not look like it had burned anything on the underside of the CD. I have also Verified and Repaired Disk Permissions (I don't know if that has anything to do with burning, but I thought I'd mention it.) Any suggestions now, by chance?

  • New to Mac and considering a macbook?

Hey Ya'll, I am posting a question because I am in need of help.
I am new to Mac except for the iPods, and I am just scared to take the plunge. I am have been talking to people online about whether to go with a macbook or another PC, and have received mixed reviews. While most tell me to go for the macbook, others say that I could find a better PC but for less money.
I am still not sure what to do! I am the type that thinks long and hard before I make decisions on items such as these. Feedback and personal experiences with the macbook would be much appreciated!!!
    Thanks!

There is no question that you can find a PC notebook cheaper than a MacBook and it would appear that for that lower price you'd get a better machine. Obviously, we Mac owners are stooges for spending more money than we need to, right? Uh, not quite. Here's my own experience based on 20 plus years of work in the information technology field as well as my years as Mac, Windows, and *nix user.
The initial price of a product is a lousy way to judge how much an item will cost you, even if you are comparing items that are virtually identical. (When you are comparing a $799 HP notebook to a $1100 Mac notebook you are not comparing virtually identical items. But lets pretend you are.) Over the life of that computer, how much extra money will you spend on software and hardware upgrades? How much time will you spend keeping it running? How much money will you spend on repairs? And when you replace it, how much will the computer be worth? Speaking of the computer's life, how long with the two computers last? This is the Total Ownership Cost and in this arena the Mac is less expensive than a Windows computer almost every time - and when I say almost I mean at least 90%.
For a number of reasons, Macs have high resale value. I've seen 5 year old Macs sell for as much as 50% of their initial retail value while I've seen 2 year old PCs sell for less than 20%. The longer you intend to keep your computer, the better value a Mac becomes. At work, when we pass out those inexpensive PC notebooks we expect that 50% of them will be out of service at the 2 year mark. We expect 80% of the Macs to be in service after 4 years. Quite a difference and one that keeps us buying those 'expensive' Macs.
One thing does make buying a Mac difficult - the price points. Apple essentially sells a couple consumer notebooks and a couple business notebooks and the price spread between the top consumer and the bottom professional is pretty wide. In the Windows world there is a computer at every price point (lots of them are junk) but if you are a professional user with $800 you can find a Windows box. For the professional Mac user with $800 to spend, there's nothing - there's nothing new. This makes the Mac look expensive. OTOH, there is the used market and because Macs tend to last longer than PCs, the Mac user with $800 will be able to find a nice used computer - something I'd seldom recommend for a PC buyer looking for a notebook.
The added value of a Mac goes beyond total ownership costs. With the Mac you'll get the iLife suite which really is a sweet set of software. Microsoft can't touch it and neither can Goggle's free software. You get one stop technical support. What drives me crazy is when Windows is acting up and the computer manufacturer passes me off to Microsoft or some other vendor while Microsoft (or the other vendor) sends me right back to the manufacturer. With Apple, as long as you are dealing with a hardware/operating system issue, there is no passing the buck. The computer and the operating system was designed in Cupertino and that's where the buck stops.
Do I sound like an Apple fanboy? Fair assessment. But ask yourself this: how did a *nix & Windows using IT specialist become an Apple fanboy? Simply put: While Microsoft promises the world to everyone, Apple delivers a reliable product.
