New to OS X - questions

I got myself a MacBook Air yesterday after long time of wondering if I should. First impression - I'm quite happy for this sturdy little machine with great battery life. I have OS X 10.9.2 with the latest updates.
It will take me a while to get used to the touchpad as I have always preferred laptops with trackpoint.
So, few question.. and more to come, I hope you can help me with these. Some question might be very simple and some come from Linux/Unix background. I'd like to modify the system so that it will bring the best for me from both worlds.
1) How to 'middle click' on chromium using only touchpad? I want to open links to a new background tab. This feature seems to work with combination of 'command' key and click, but I have not yet figured out how to do with single click. If I use two finger click, I get the 'right click' with various options. Yet this is not what I want.
2) How does the copy&paste actually work? How to 'paint' the selection?
3) I'm currently using the mail client which came with the system. I think it's still processing some of the mails from gmail. How can I get new email information to the right notification panel (which opens with two finger swipe from the right of touchpad).
4) NFS mounts? Does OSX support NFS anymore and is it better to stick with Samba when accessing files on NAS?
I'd like to setup sticky mountpoints /data/pics for example so that I can do my own backups from the laptop to the NAS as well as access those files from the same directories from various machines.
Now my NAS is Samba mounted on /Volumes/Volume_1 will this name be used forever? In that case I could just create an symbolic link with ln -s /Volumes/Volume_1/data/pics /data/pics for example.
5) apt-get type of functionality to install opensource software?
I noted that there is xports http://www.macports.org/install.php which seems to have quite a lot of applications available and installable from the shell. Is this the preferred way to install optional software or is there better ones?
6) While installing some software I got these weird volumes? What are these? Can I remove these after the installation process or are these still used for something?
/dev/disk1s2    72Mi   72Mi    0Bi   100%    36757          0  100%   /Volumes/Install Google Drive
/dev/disk2s2  130Mi  117Mi   13Mi    90%    29949       3349   90%   /Volumes/vlc-2.1.4
7) Does timemachine backup all the system settings as well? Can it be used to do the backup for a) local disk external disk c) to NAS?
Quite a few question, but it would be very helpful if you could find the time to answer these. When I get more used to the system, I try to return the favours
Thanks!

2. For text, it works just like Windows (Cmd+C, Cmd+X, Cmd+V). For files, OS X doesn't "Cut". You have to drag files locally to "move" them. And to external drives or flash drives, there is only "copy". You can't "move" files. Within the drive, you can move them, however.
3. I've always used Thunderbird for my mail. I have Apple Mail set up with my seven domain and Gmail accounts, but I rarely use it.
6. That looks like mounted DMGs for the installers. You unmount them by ejecting them from the desktop. Most COCOA installers will examine them to determine if they're eligible for installation, but they always show up as a volume you can't use.
7. Time Machine backs up system files. It enables users to restore from a TM backup. I've only ever done that once, back in 2010, but I was able to FULLY restore my MacBook Pro (OS10.6) in about 40 minutes.

I create new account with security questions, and when I try to purchase paid application,it ask me for answers the questions but it's not working,
My account have 50$ and still didn't buy anything

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, and filling out and submitting this form.

Icloud or itunes backup, only backs up app data, not the app itself.
so if you restore as new, then there is no app data on your phone, you start out new...

You do not.  Content is permanently tied to the Apple ID that it was acquired with.
Sign out of the computer with the new Apple ID.  STOP using the new Apple ID.
Sign in with the original Apple ID that the content was acquired with.

  • New MBP retina migration question

If I buy the new MBP I prefer to use the new thunderbolt - firewire dongle for migration assistant in target disk mode since they have eliminated the firewire port. However, this dongle is not yet available and a search shows MB air owners have been waiting for over a year for Sonnet's Allegro dongle to come to market. Sonnet puit out it's first Marketing release on this product April 11 ,2011, over a year ago! I think it is optomistic to expect it to appear anytime soon.
So option 2 is to get the thunderbolt - ethernet dongle and use migration assitant from my Time Capsule to my new MBP. The question is how much longer would it take to move 120 GB of data using ethernet versus firewire and are there any difficulties using this method? I have had really good luck using target disk mode in past times and am hesitant about going from the time capsule.

  • New Mac Pro setup questions..

    Hi,
Just pulled the trigger on a Mac Pro 3gh, 4gb, ATI 1900. I am going to that from a dual 1.42 quicksilver and had some questions.
It seems migration assistant may not be the best way to go. Is this true, should I reinstall everything? Is it possible to drag and drop apps to the new machine?
Is it possible to get mail info from another machine to the new one? I have an iMac at home that I have been using Mail with and would like all the email addresses on the new machine at work. My old setup, I was still using Enterouge (sp) and would like to use Mail like at home.
I have the stock 250gb drive and I need to figure out different drive scenarios. I recently bought two external 500gb drives before even thinking about a new system. I am a commercial photographer and one drive is a backup that lives offsite from my studio for protection. Should I mirror with an external?
    Thanks for any help!

    This FAQ may be helpful:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

  • New iMac, have several questions

    Community,
First of all I'm not sure if this is the right community to post to. My questions seem to span several forum categories. If there is a better general forum for my questions, please let me know.
I just got a new iMac, (21.5 inch late 2013), with a 1T fusion drive and pre-loaded with Yosemite (version 10.10.1). My "old" iMac is a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo vintage 2006 model with 3G RAM and running Leopard and Snow Leopard. I'm trying to learn the ins and outs of my new iMac and Yosemite and I have some questions. Keep in mind that I'm an old dog trying to learn some new tricks, so please be patient.
    1. I think I may already have the answer on this one (via the FAQ I read about Fusion Drives) but I'll ask anyway just to be sure I understand. On my previous macs, I've always partitioned my hard drive into 3 or 4 partitions and I would like to do the same with my new iMac. I tried following the Disk Utility Help but I'm running into a problem. Apparently I can only partition my fusion drive into two partitions. If I try to further partition either of those partitions I find I can only merge the existing two partitions back together. According to the Disk Utility help file, I should be able to create as many partitions as I want. So which is correct, the FAQ, (only two partition on a Fusion Drive), or the Disk Utility help, (as many partitions as I want)? And if I can have more than two partitions, how do I do that?
    2. Related to question 1, I also have an external hard drive (plain vanilla iOmega type) that is connected to my old iMac via USB cable. I use it for backup storage. Will there be any problem using that drive with my new iMac?
    3. One of my partitions is for Windows. I know OS X has Boot Camp but my understanding is that a user must restart when switching between OS X and Windows. Is that still true for Yosemite? If so, I'll stick with Parallels.
    4. Related to question 3, the help link for setting up Boot Camp indicates I need a 64 bit version of Windows 7. I have a 32 bit version. Is that an issue (keep in mind, I'll likely be using Parallels)?
    5. More on Windows. I see there is an option to format a Windows partition as MS-DOS FAT. On my old iMac my Windows partition was formatted as normal Mac OS Extended (journaled) and that works fine. Is there a reason I should format the Windows partition on my new iMac as MS-DOS FAT?
    6. I miss seeing the hard drive icons on my desktop, everything seems to be in the dock. Is there a way to show my hard drive icon and any other partitions on my desktop?
    7. Of course my biggest job will be to transfer data from my old iMac to the new one. The Firewire port on my old iMac is dead (zapped by lightning a few years ago). What is the best way to transfer data between the two computers? Note, I see a warning in the Disk Utility help file that "to prevent loss of data on your Fusion Drive don't connect it to a mac that's using a version of OS X older than 10.8.5". Is that warning relevant to transferring my data since my old iMac has
    10.5.8 and 10.6.8?
That's my first barrage of newbie questions. There will likely be more.
    John

    Niel,
Thanks for the quick reply. I understand 1, 2 and 3. I'll check with the Parallels people to get full resolution on items 4 & 5. It's a shame about the restart requirement for Boot Camp.
Item 6 is a "duh". If I'd looked further I could have answered my own question.
For item 7 I didn't get a definitive answer to my question about the relevancy of the warning. Is there an issue? For the answer you did provide are you saying i should dump everything from my old iMac onto my external hard drive and then move that external drive to the new iMac and load it? With regard to using a network approach, all I have is airport to my DSL router from my old iMac and then either Firewire or airport from the router to my new iMac. How would I use that setup? I have no other local or remote "network".

  • New motion user here, questions

    Hello all,
I am new to apple motion 2 and new to video and motion graphics as a whole. I just brought home a new dual core 2 ghz G5 and a 23 inch apple display about a month ago. I currently work doing still graphics, mostly layout and some illustration - working in photoshop, illustrator and indesign primarily. I also do a bit of audio work as a hobby using ableton live.
I have always had an interest in video and animation, but have never gotten into it for some reason. When choosing this machine I had considered the dual 2.5 but decided on the dual 2.0 primarily because "I don't do video, animation, or 3D work".
So, what does my wife buy me for Christmas? A digital video camera! I am not sure if I will pursue video and motion graphics on a professional level, but what I really want to do is artistic experimentation - video art if you will, combining my own video clips, graphics, sound effects, music, creativity and vision into motion monsters.
So, after talking with a few people I ordered motion 2 today and should have it by the end of the week. I do not even have the software yet and I am completely overwhelmed by the creative possibilities - and I am not even sure what they are yet! I am very excited to get into this.
One thing I am wondering about; as I stated above, when I chose my computer one of the reasons I chose the dual 2 ghz was specifically because I do not do this type of work. So now, of-course, I am worried that my machine is not going to be quite up to the task. I see that people are running motion on their powerbooks so I imagine I will be fine, but I suppose I am looking for some re-assurance to help quell my obsessive mind.
    My stats are as follows:
    Dual Core 2 GHZ G5
    2.5 gigs DDR SDRAM
    160 GB Hard-drive
NVIDIA GeForce 6600LE 128 mb VRAM
    23 Inch Apple HD Display
Is my system going to be up to task? I am already thinking that I am going to need to upgrade my video card and probably buy another hard-drive. Not now, but sometime later in the year. Also, more ram is always good.
Can I expect to run into any limitations out of the box, and in my early stages of learning?
Again, I am sure I will figure this out on my own when my copy of motion arrives later this week but any advice about what I should expect would be great.
Also, any learning resources I should know of that are not immediately obvious on this forum? Suggested reading, books, online, etc. Tutorial dvd's are great for me. I purchased the 1st quicktime tutorial, "getting started in motion" from rippletraining.com and was utterly blown away by that simple lesson. Also, any online resources of work people have done using motion, especially video/audio integration. Bear in mind that although I do design and layout, and audio work I have exactly zero experience in motion graphics and video.
I'm really excited about the possibilities! So yes, if anyone could address my concerns regarding my system, and point me in the right direction for resources to get started I would greatly appreciate it.
Best regards, and thanks in advance -

Hi Graham, and thanks so much for your response.
Like I said before I am really in the dark when it comes to video and motion graphics so I bought motion on someones recomendation without knowing exactly what it is. Silly maybe? But I have a feeling I am going to be happy as I do not want to limit myself strictly to video alone.
I was a little worried that I had made the wrong choice, as I started to realize that motion is geared towards the creation of motion graphics, but regardless I think I will enjoy learning it and finding a way to integrate it into my vision (whatever that may be).
As far as a basic video editor goes, I will look at finalcut express but probably will need a couple of months before I can justify another purchase to the boss (my wife :-P ). In the mean time will iMovie suffice in your opinion for very basic editing and building? Does iMovie play well, or at all, with motion in your opinion?
I imagine I will be able to edit clips to a desired length and output them to motion then dump them back into iMovie if I'd like. I suppose I will find out.
Sheesh, so many questions! Anyway, I planned on getting final cut and after effects at some point down the road and am still excited about diving into motion.
Again, thanks for your response and once I am up and running I will be sure to post my work.

  • Going to buy a new MBP 17, but questions first

Hi all, looking to buy a custom build new Feb'11 refresh MBP 17 as soon as possible, but have a number of questions.
(As background, Im a freelance IT software developer and professional music producer/DJ/performer - need the laptop to support both activities - Mac OS for music, Windows 7/64 for IT work).
    1. Intel support chipset flaw - does anyone know EXACTLY what Apple have done regarding this?
    I am guess one of:
    1. Waited for replacement from intel - shipping seems too soon.
    2. Only use the 3Gbps ports and not using the 6Gbps ports (Net contains suggestions that Apple made a 'logic tweak' to get aorund the issue, which sounds to me like they intended to use the 6Gbps ports and downgraded back to the 3Gbps ports - if so will postpone purchase, but I need to know one way or the other)
    2. I am tempted by 256GB SSD rather than a mechanical HD as the laptop is likely to be used near very loud PA systems. Should I go with Apple or just take the cheapest mechanical HD and sort out an SSD myself?
    3. Because I also need to have alot of online storage, then I am also tempted by an OptiBay mod to replace the otical drive with an additional SSD in the future (160GB sample library, music files etc).
    4. Is Apple care worthwhile and is apple care support impacted by swapping out the HD or optical drive and going with an Optibay etc?
    5. I need to also run windows 7/64 via bootcamp as a second and heavily used OS as I still make much of my living from IT work as well as music. Pre-refresh MBPs were not exactly perfect for running windows - power management etc. Does anyone know if this situation has improved post refresh? Is the situation likely to be even worse with thunderbolt / display etc?
Thanks all for any answer anyone might be able to give

You can read my initial view of the i7 17" Quad Core here: http://www.markc.me.uk/MarkC/Blog/Entries/2011/2/25Early_2011_MacbookPro.html
    The unit supports SATA 3 & SATA 6: http://grab.by/9adG
I have a 240Gb SSD and a 1Tb normal hard drive in place of the SuperDrive. It's a great solution - personally I'd sort an SSD myself rather than buy Apple's.
Swapping out the SuperDrive does void you warranty as far as I know.
I run virtualised Win7 x64 all day every day and it's ace.

  • I want to buy a new laptop so my question is should i buy the new 2013 macbook air 13in or wait for the next model (june 2014) ?

This will be my first mac laptop, so my question if i am goin to miss a huge jump in the specifications for the next year release or not ?

We know there will eventually be a new MacBook Air (though the terms of use here prohibt speculation about it). We have no idea when it will come out or what it's specs will be. Retired Engineer's advice is exactly the same as mine. If you need a computer now, buy it. It is a powerful computer and except for the fact there's no 2TB SSD available (not that I could afford it if one existed) it could be my one and only computer. If you merely want a new computer, wait until you need one.

  • New owner, a few questions

I have enjoyed my new Iphone for 2 months and purchased a unit for my son as a Christmas present.
Initially we will be sharing the same desk top till he can get laptop.
My plan is 2 seperate Itunes accounts. Only one calendar (outlook) on this desktop, mine. When he syncs up is he not gonna get my calendar and contacts on his unit is he? Is that info gonna unique to my unit?
2nd question- I don't wanna sound dumb, but any music I buy stored on my hard drive or on Itunes?
Next question. When he buys a laptop, how does he get his Itunes to his new computer? What will be the procedure to get him off my desktop and on his laptop? Meaning can the phone talk to 2 computers?
    Thanks.

The only way to stop that is to set his iPhone not to sync calendar and contacts. There isn't a way to set 2 different phones to sync 2 different sets of contacts. Unless one of you opens a MobileMe account, and syncs to that without syncing to a desktop. A workaround is that one of you uses Gmail calendar and contacts, and accesses that direct from the browser on the phone, but there's no syncing. Ig he's like most youngsters, her won't care about syncing his contacts to the desktop, so set his phone up not to sync Calendar and Contacts at all.
2nd question- I don't wanna sound dumb, but any music I buy stored on my hard drive or on Itunes?
It's stored on your hard drive, in wherever your iTunes library is set in iTunes options. Long time since I used iTunes under Windows, so I can't remember the exact place to look, but open iTunes options and look for an advanced tab. That should show where your iTunes library is. Usually somewhere within the My Music folder, I think.
Next question. When he buys a laptop, how does he get his Itunes to his new computer? What will be the procedure to get him off my desktop and on his laptop? Meaning can the phone talk to 2 computers?
2 ways (there may be others). (a) connect laptop and desktop, open iTunes on the laptop, and import into iTunes the tracks he wants from the desktop, or (b) copy the tracks to where he wants them on the laptop, open iTunes options, point to the new location for his library, and the use the Consolidate option to get iTunes to move and organise the tracks
    Thanks.

  • New iMovie - A few questions (fav/reject, timeline)

Have some questions on the new iMovie v 10:
    1.  Is the "new" clip wrapping "vertical" timeline view gone?  I actually liked this as opposed the the traditional horizontal timeline.  Now all I see is the traditional horizontal timeline.
    2.  The Favorite and Reject buttons appear to be gone.  I have to right-click and then select "favorite" or "reject" .  This has gone from one click to two...And I don't feel that I have gained this space in the UI.   Can I get fav and reject buttons back?

    1- View>Wrapping Timeline
2- Fav/Reject specific buttons are gone but can be accessed with a control click. Which will also show you the Keyboard Shortcuts for those options.

  • New T530 a few questions

I have a new T530 and just have a few questions.. (ok its at home as of typing this so some i can't test right away)
Swapping the fn and ctrl keys, from research I can do this from the bios, correct?
Is there a way to use the wireless switch to disable just bluetooth? or is this a bios setting as well? (yes I know i could disable in the device manager)
Is there a way to have the backlight on the keyboard turn on when using the keyboard rather than having to manually turn it on everytime?
also i have 16GB ram in this machine, but it appears some gets taken for the intel graphics, though I do have the nvidia NVS graphics option. is there a way to disable the intel portiion so i gain this ram back? (agreed, this is more of me complaining than a question)
last, I currently have the intel Centrino Wireless-N 2200 (2x2 BGN) card, and was interested in upgrading to the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 AGN, can i just get one from any store? or do i need the "lenovo" model. I would like to get th 6300 but it appears to have just 2 connectors instead of 3.
    Thanks

You can do this with Fn-F5 (user's guide, P23) (English) User Guide
The pop-up menu will give you the option to enable/disable wifi and/or bluetooth.  Is that what you were looking for?

  • Getting wife a new iphone..backup questions

Not too good in using itunes.  My wife has an iphone and my limit to itunes is putting some songs on my ipod.
I want to surprise my wife with a new iphone this week and before I get her a new one I want to make sure I save all of her content and most importantly phone numbers because I actually want to clear it out before going to the verizon store because I want to transfer her old iphone to my daughters # and have her start using it.
So I guess my questions are...
How do I first backup all of my wife's content on her phone (phone numbers and photos) ?
After I back it up is there an easy one step process to clear the phone out of everything so I can have my daughter start using it?
Once I bring the new phone home, how do I get the phone #'s onto it that I backed up previously?
Once I transfer her old phone to my daughter do I need to rename the phone or anything since they both use the same computer but have different itunes accounts?

To get the phone number displayed in the notification ar you could try the following
Settings - Phone - My Number
