New to overclocking RAM

Good day Ladies! :P
Im new to overclocking Ram so bare with me alright
So just yesterday i received a nice little package from a competition i won .. a 16gb kit of Patriot Viper 3 1600mhz memory ( its free and better than my apacer 8gigs i had :P ) but now i have been reading around and apparently this ram over-clocks surprisingly well .. ( spec sheet http://www.patriotmemory.com/product/specs/PV316G160C9QK.pdf )
now i havnt really seen much of a difference ( yea yea i know there isnt much difference between 1333 and 1600 ), though i must say photoshop loves this ram.. from taking 24sec to open now down to 12-13sec to open ( no SSD )
So now, in my bio's i have seen there is like set option of 1333/1600/1866/2133 .. Im running AMD so i know 2133 isnt quite supported so wanting to push it to 1866.. Wanting to know, if i just set that to set option to 1866, will that do anything for me? will it change the latency timings etc ?
Specs if needed:
CPU: AMD FX-8350
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100
MoBo: MSI 990FXA-GD80 Bios 13.2
Ram: 16gigs Patriot Viper 3 1600mhz
GPU: MSI R6870
Thanks a million :D

Back to the ram .. When you said try one at a time, you mean try with 1 ram stick at a time ? then after i find a stable clock i should put them all in?
Perhaps I was not quite clear on that
1. I would test everything with 2 mem sticks first. If you have it stable, then add the other 2 and see if its still stable.
2. When I said, try one at a time, I was referring to the timings. i.e. lets assume you are able to get them stable at 1866 10.10.10.30, then set it to 9.10.10.30 and retry, then go for 9.9.10.30, etc. You will have to toy around with different timings to see which one works best. i.e. you may find that 9.10.9.24 works, but all of them on 9 don't. You may even find that you have to loosen them to 11 to get stability. It will take time to find the best setting. Use a benchmark tool like maxxMem to see if there is any significant gain by OC'ing your mem. You may even find reduced performance once you go beyond a certain threshold.  Test, test, and more tests
btw, I see you are a fellow countryman

  • New 2 overclocking HELP

I think its very funny how people will bash the MSI drivers even though they are on an MSI forum.  anywho, I have a couple of questions.
Firstly:  I have this same issue and i read through the post till i got so confused i almost shot myself.  MSI Clock settings will not stay  I have the MSI FX5900-VTD128 and I have to manually input the settings everytime i boot up.  if someone could explain this to me in a tad bit simpler terms i would appreciate it.  I reverted back to the "approved drivers" for 3dmark so i could do the bench mark thinggy.  btw my clock settings are as follows  3d clock (default/clocked) 400/442,  Memory clock 850/947.   I am amazed at the quality of this card, my last one was a geforce ti4200.  Prime reason I got the fx wasfor doom 3 (i wanna be able to be scared sh*tless and not pissed at my graphics accellerator)
Secondly:  As stated I am new to overclocking and am scared out of my mind that I might fry something, so I am very cautious about what I do to my componants.  My main problem is that 3dmark gave me a score of 5700 (or around that).  I need to know, when I run the test, should I lower all my settings??  or does the test need to be run at the "best" settings?  are there any reg keys or drivers or software that could help me with my score?  any help is appreciated...thanks a ton

    Tangz,
Overclocking  your video card is unique to each video card, no two
video cards that come off the assembly line will overclock the same!
Its always the luck of  the draw on video cards and overclocking!
There is a work around for your “memory frequencies reverting back
to default on bootups”, in that post,  but, their for nvidia VGA drivers
and the Coolbits hack,  I haven’t tried this work around on MSI VGA
    drivers!
We all don’t dislike MSI drivers, well maybe some us do! For some
reason they have been known to cause problems! And the reason we
like nvidia drivers is, their usually the latest version, and their the ones
who designed the video cards GPU!  Plus, their stream lined, and not
    full of garbage!
This thread by Kingfisher on "Overclocking" should be a great place for
you to get started!         Good luck and happy overclocking!

  • A Newb's Poor CPU Overclocking; RAM Timings?

    First, my system specs:

    Enermax EG475P 470W PSU(+3.3V = 34A, +5V = 40A, +12V = 33A)
I've done quite a bit to my video card in the past few weeks:  replaced the stock ATI cooling with a VGA Silencer, flashed my Pro to XT status, and overclocked it mildly.
Just a few days ago I replaced the boxed CPU cooler with a Thermaltake Spark 7+ Xaser Edition A1715 CPU Cooler.  Here's where I ran into my first snag:  It didn't reduce my temperatures much.  At idle my Prescott 2.8 ran at 48 or 49C with the box cooler, and runs exactly the same under load.  However, with the stock cooler under load it would get all the way up to 69-71, whereas with this new cooler it only reaches 65-67.  Still not what I was expecting with this cooler though.
I decided to delve into a bit of CPU overclocking.  I increased the FSB 1MHz at a time, testing after each increase.
Except, I didn't get very far.  I was using Call of Duty multiplayer to test, and I get visual errors starting at 203MHz.  They're thin vertical white lines that flash for a second and then disappear.  Also jagged polygons strewn throughout the screen, usually white or a pale color.  When I clock back down to 202MHz, they disappear.
Using CPU-Z I get these values for my RAM modules:
    http://mywebpage.netscape.com/ISBop/cpuz1.JPG
In case that picture doesn't work, they are:
    FSB:DRAM = 1:1
    CAS Latency = 3.0 clocks
RAS to CAS = 3 clocks
    RAS Precharge = 3 clocks
    Cycle Time = 3 clocks
Bank Cycle Time, DRAM Idle Timer, Total CAS, and Row To Column are all blank and greyed out.
I know that increasing the FSB also increases the memory frequency, so basically I'm trying to figure out if these artifacts are caused by the CPU or the memory.  My CPU cooler has manual fan control and when the system is under load I run the fan at high speed, and the temperatures aren't getting that high, so it doesn't seem like the CPU is the problem.
I looked around for specific information about my RAM modules' overclocking abilities, but found little.  I found the datasheet for my memory here(PDF format).  I was thinking that maybe tightening the timings would enable me to push up my FSB higher.  202 as a limit is a little disappointing, to say the least.
My BIOS settings are as follows:
    Performance Mode = Turbo(MAT)
    DOT = Disabled
    CPU Ratio Selection = Locked
    DRAM Frequency = 400
    Spread Spectrum = Enabled
    CPU Bus Clock = 202
    DDR Clock = 404
    AGP/PCI Clock = 66.66/33.33
    CPU Voltage = 1.3875
    DDR Voltage = 2.60
    AGP Voltage = 1.65V
    System Readings:
    System Temperature = 35C
    Vcore:
    3.3V = 3.184 - 3.248
    5.0V = 5.088 - 5.167
    12.0V = 12.081 - 12.408

what does 202 do for you?  I mean I'm at 220.
    RE the software?
What drivers?  You mean graphics drivers?  Different drivers haven't made a difference in any game.  The artifacts appear once I clock to 203.
I don't know if I have the RAM set correctly.  I was posting here to find that out.
By card voltage I assume you mean AGP voltage.  Its at 2.65V.  Vcore is at the lowest setting, 1.3875.  I tried 1.4000 and 1.4150 but neither affected the overclocking ability either way.  Still produced artifacts at 203.
How did you get to 220?  What happened when you went higher than that?

  • New to Overclocking. i7 950 Trying to join the 4.0 GHz Club.

Hi guys, I'm new to Over clocking however I need some help. I'm in desperate need to just reach about 4.0 - 4.2 GHz Overclocking from a 3.07 on a i7 950.  My Motherboard is a x58 Pro-e motherboard. I attempted raising my cblk and the performance increase was that but however when I opened up CPU-z it didn't say 4000 MHz..... I need help. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to change my voltage too... I'm new I kinda wish someone with LOADS of experience can just tell me numbers to crunch in and as long as nothing over heats I believe everything should be fine. OH I'm also using an H50 Corsair Liquid Cooling system. My case is a TT Chaser MK-1. Plenty of airflow. If  knowledge of what speed of ram I have its PC 1600 DDR3. I have triple channel ram and I have 6 gigs.

Thank you so much! I'm going to try these settings when I get home! However at some point this week I was going to get a ram kit of 12 gb. I need it for my design software.... I'll post the link of what it is below.... Will this make a difference is anything you just posted settings wise? it's 12GB (3x4GB) 1600MHz 9-9-9-24, CL9, 1.5V. I'll post a link below in case you're wondering what it is exactly im getting.

  • Macbook Pro freezes after installing new 4GB of Ram

So I have a 15" macbook pro (2.4Ghz) that I've had for a few months. It's been pretty good so far, but I've been using it for Ram-intensive programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as Logic. I only had the 2GB of Ram that it came with, and I was noticing some latency. So I did what everyone recommended and upgraded the Ram to 4GB. I purchased some at my local computer shop (s598: Super Talent 4GB SODIMM DDR3 1066Mhz) I just posted the exact numbers posted on the packaging for this item. I know I need DDR3 1066Mhz, but I'm not sure what the S598 stands for.......
Anyhow, I just installed this today. And it seems that the system doesn't get bogged down AS much. But my laptop has COMPLETELY frozen up twice within a couple hours and I've had to force shutdown the machine... Is this the RAM causing this?? Would anyone know if installing this Ram can be problematic? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

All of the new unibody MBs/MBPs can use (6GB 4X2GB)
But yes you should definitely make sure the RAM is seated correctly and you didn't touch the gold part of the RAM during installation. Though if something was seriously wrong it would have made loud obnoxious sounds while you tried to start up.
Aside from Installation issues, you should reset the PRAM as noted previously. Hold down command-option-p-r at startup until it chimes twice.
OP, looking at Super Talent's website they don't even have 1066MHz chips listed in their DDR3 chips. All I see is a jump from 800MHz (DDR2) to 1333MHz (DDR3).
Either way, I can't imagine you got that great a deal for the RAM that even if it is seemingly the correct RAM you can get better deals in the links I posted in my other post.

  • What's a good overclockable ram set that'll run at 1066ish with low voltage?

Does anybody have their favorite ram that they like to nominate that I buy?  I don't think my $25 ram likes me $200 processor and $250 motherboard very much.
Preferably ones that you've overclocked on the P7N Diamond.
    Thanks.

    autumnale,
Did d3fct change the link or something?  It says $90 shipped, the PC8500 are $150 though.

Are they the Micron D9 DRAM modules do you know?
No they are Powerchips IC's.  Just to share,  D9's are 512Mbit(64MB) IC's.  The most chips you can fit on a package is 16, so you'll never see a 2GB module(or 4GB-2x2GB kit) with Micron D9's.
I don't have much experience yet with the 780i, but I have used both the GSkills and Ballistix, and both have overclock room.
Ballistix DDR1300 with room to spare:
    http://home.comcast.net/~aicjofs/everest.jpg
GSkill at 550Mhz, perfect buy for 4GB of RAM at $90
    http://home.comcast.net/~aicjofs/ram550.jpg
Now I will say this about the Ballistix in general, I would just stay away from Crucials for awhile unless you don't mind RMA if it happens.  The state of things over at Crucial is just not good with respect to all the 2GB kits.  Too many sticks dying after a short while not overclocked or overvolted, Crucial swapping out the regular 8500(not the tracers) with single sided sticks that don't overclock and also die young...I personally have had to return 2 kits to them....and the IRONY is those are the 2 kits that ran at DDR500(below spec, and never overvolted)....The 16 chip Ballistix do clock like mad, but just be warned that you might not be happy with the purchase long term.

  • Having Problems with Powerbook After installing New(non-apple) ram

I had a total of 768 mb of ram on my Powerbook G4 1.5 but I decided that I wanted to max it out to 1.25 gb. So I went out to the store and bought a used but tested 1gb Patriot ram chip to replace my 512mb . I put it in and went to system info to see if my computer detected it, and it did, it reported that I had 1.25gb just as I wanted. The next morning I was excited about using my newly upgraded computer ( I left it in sleep all night I don't know if that could have caused any problems) and when i turned it on first thing i got was that semi-transparent shut down your computer screen when OSX has experienced a problem, I had never seen this error message before, I can tell you I was pretty angry. I restarted my powerbook and then I logged in, I used Onyx and forced to run maintenance, thinking that might help, but again the comp crashed when i tried to open Onyx. and then again the next time trying to open Entourage, then AGAIN the next time trying to open Safari. What is going ON!? Now I am on my laptop again but i took out the 1gb and put back in my apple 512mb, so far so good but why did my 1gb not work?? I would like to have 1.25gb so ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Eric

Acctually yes it was returnable and I did return it. But before i saw your comment I bought a new not pre-owned chip of the same kind, it also didnt work so I will take your advice and purchase a chip that supports bus slewing, maybe i'll go for the more expensive ones just for some added security
By the way thanks for the help,
    Eric

  • Does it make sense to put in new 4gb of Ram in an early 2008 iMac

It seems that my 2008 iMac is running slow after I made my last upgrade to ML.  I am thinking of putting in 2 2gb memory cards.  However, my Ram now is supposed to already be 4gb.  Does doing this make any sense?

  • Brand new mac crashing & RAM full

My housemate bought a shiny new Macbook Pro yesterday and has unfortunately had a difficult start with it.
After installing Google Chrome, Dropbox, and Spotify it has been crashing constantly, bringing up errors when trying to update and generally misbehaving. Looking at the activity monitor was also showing only around 100MB of free RAM out of 4GB. I have a 6 year old Macbook Pro with 4GB of RAM which runs perfectly.
I tried repairing permissions, zapping PRAM and NVRAM: nothing. After a lot of forum searching, which brought up nothing more useful than endless suggestions to buy more RAM, I unchecked the option to 'reopen windows when logging back in' in the shutdown dialog. That has cured the problem completely. I guess the snapshot was full of junk from updates, software installations etc which has now been cleared by a fresh reboot.
I thought I'd put this up in case there are other poor sods out there who've spent £1500 on a computer only to be be disappointed with the performance and then told they need to buy more RAM.

  • New Ipad's Ram

How many RAM does the new Ipad actially have? The first model had 256, the second 512...and the new androids all have 1GB. Dowe also het 1GB Ram?

I would add that comparing RAM on Android tablets to iOS tablets is tricky. On Android, most models have 256-512M, only the most recent ones and the higher end ones (such as the Samsun Galaxy S2) have 1G. More importnatly, the iPad executes native code whereas the Android devices add the Dalvik VM as a layer on top of the native layer, and it tends to use a lot of DOM-based configuration elements too - both notably increase the RAM usage.
In both environments, applications are checkpointed is memory gets low, but Android permits apps to effectively lock part of themselves in RAM.
Overall, iOS tends to be more efficient with memory usage. That is probably offset somewhat today with the higher-resolution display (larger images and textures used in the high-resolution apps).

  • Upgrading a 2009 iMac 10,1 21.5" screen to the new processor and RAM

I got mine last year from Best Buy and would like to know if they will or can upgrade my computer to the new quad core processor and RAM?

The processor won't be upgradeable. Even assuming it's not soldered to the logic board and could be swapped without affecting the warranty (it can't), the Core 2 Duo and Core i5/i7 do not use the same socket; you can't replace one with the other.

  • New Leopard and RAM Random shutdown won't restart

I have recently purchased Leopard and new RAM to boost my systems power for an HD editing project.
Ever since my computer now randomly shuts down and won't restart. The only thing that gets the computer to restart is if I pop out the RAM cards and reinsert them. It never did this before I upgraded. And if I leave out the new RAM card it still shuts down with just the old RAM leading me to believe theres a problem with Leopard.
I've done disk utility and while the 1st time I ran it it found errors that it repaired. But it still shuts down and when I run disk utility it finds no errors. I can't figure this out and I need to get this project going. Any ideas?

THis is the results of the test through rember. I have no idea what these results mean.

  • New to overclock

I have K7n2 with PNY 512 PC2100 DDR.  I tried to overclock.  I increased the FSB; everytime i increased the FSB the RAM speed also increased.  The multiplier in the BIOS is set as "default".  Anyway, Could someone explain to me what is how is the multiplier setting related to the FSB?  Does it caused my system to be unstable if the RAM kept on increasing when i increased the FSB?
    Thanks

if you dont know what you are doing, dont do it. better read http://www.oveclocking.com forums, but listen men. dont do , what you dont know. you can damage your componenets

  • MacBook Pro Stuck at Grey Apple with New 8GB of RAM

So I recently purchased 8 GB of RAM to upgrade my 2010, 13", Intel Core 2 DUO, 2.4GHz with Lion MacBook Pro from the original 4 GB it had. But once the new RAM sticks were installed. The computer proceeds to but to the Grey Apple logo during boot and freezes every-time the wheel begins to spin. From that point I decided to put one of the original 2 GB sticks back into the computer and leave one of the new 4 GB sticks in as well. Guess what, the computer booted fine.
This makes no sense to me as I know this computer can take 8 GB of RAM but yet it will only work when I have one of the original sticks in making my total RAM 6 GB. Any ideas how to fix this issue?
Here is the exact RAM stick I ordered:

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I hope you have return privileges.
Macs are notoriously 'picky' about RAM. Just because modules are advertised as meeting the specs doesn't mean they will work reliably.
I learned the hard way with a RAM upgrade from a manufacturer who did not guarantee Mac compatibility. They did replace them once, yet the RAM still didn't work without frequent Kernel Panics.
RAM from Apple, Crucial, and OtherWorldComputing (www.macsales.com) seems to work well for most people who discuss it here in the forums. With other brands, sometimes it works, sometimes it does not.

  • Strange New Error Since RAM and HD Upgrade

Recently I added more RAM to my machine, I went from 8gb to 32, this update forced me to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro because Win 7 home edition is limited to 16GB, I also added a second hard drive and the files I am working with are on this new hard drive.
When I attempt to publish an Apple .IPA file via Adobe AIR I get this wall of errors. It does not happen every time but when it does it takes many restarts to get it to publish. Any ideas?

Ah thanks for clarifying 64bit to 64bit upgrade.
When you say blue screen (BSOD) the first thing that always comes to mind is memory issues. It doesn't even matter if you buy the same brand/model/size sticks, they can conflict with each other and blue screen you. The only way to avoid this is typically buy only matched sets (the manufacturer guarantees the RAM was tested together and is packaged together). That doesn't mean buying 2 separate paired sets is the same, they can conflict with each other.
One easy way that just takes patience is to use the good old Prime95 test. I recommend you download it and let it run for at least an hour on the torture test. It will attempt to make your RAM create a mistake, blue screen you, etc. If it does, you may have a RAM issue. I say "may" because it will test your processor, FSB and RAM all together. If it does make a blue screen, try removing all but one module of RAM and test again. If that passes, pair it up and try again. Eventually you will find the RAM combo that is failing if that's the issue.
    You can get Prime95 here:
    http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft/ (direct link)
Don't sign up for GIMPS (unless you want to), just use the software for the testing purpose.
Lastly many modern motherboards support memtest86 directly in the BIOS menu (press delete, F1 or whatever your motherboard mentioned at PC startup). See if it's in the advanced or troubleshooting menus. That is the industry standard way to test RAM but it's not as easy as Prime95. If you don't have memtest86 in the menu you can download it here:
    http://download.cnet.com/Memtest86/3000-2086_4-10524193.html
Note memtest86 is a CD image. You burn that onto a CD and then boot off the CD. It does not run in Windows.
If your memory checks out, that only leaves the HD as a potential issue. If your system reliably blue screens often, taking it out to see if it's causing it should be pretty easy.
