  • Poor overclock with E4300 and MSI P6N SLI-Fi - Strap Issue?

A friend of mine and me bought new rigs last friday. Each of us is using a E4300 with Tuniq Tower, a Leadtek 8800 GTS and a 1 GB DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 from G.E.I.L running on a P6N SLI-FI.
Neither of us can clock higher than 250 x 9 = 2,250 MHz with VCore +0,0125. I can run Orthos stable at 2,400 MHz, but will fail 3DMark or Gaming Timedemos. My machine won´t even post above 2,500 MHz. Temperatures are fine and not the problem.
Tried everything, upping VCore up to 1,4V, maxing out the northbridge voltage, clocking down the RAM to 667 or 533 and relaxing the timings. C1E, DOT, EIST etc. is disabled of course. The only thing which helped to get further into windows was fiddling with the northbridge voltage but nonetheless nothing won´t run stable above 2,250 MHz.
The problem looks very similar like the one posted in this thread: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=105321.120
Unfortunately, Systool doesn´t read out anything, seems like NForce 650i isn´t supported yet. I have tried at 1070 in Bios, which should be 267 MHz - nothing different. Also 1080, 1090, 1100... 1120. 1110 is the last setting, with which the machine would even post (with voltages nearly maxxed), at 1120 I have to do a BIOS reset.
Did anyone have similar experiences? Found workarounds?

Hey thanks for your advice, but I am actually not THAT stupid...  :D
I took a step by step approach over 2 days, isolating things. It would run stable at 2,250 MHz with only a notch or two up the VCore. 2,400 MHz also ran Orthos stable (Blend) for some hours but crashed on instant in HL2 or 3DMark. Got at least 3DMark stable (but not HL2) by increasing the NB voltage. Then I started tweaking first VCore only, then NB only, combinations (there are quite a few to try out...). I studied electrical engineering and am repairing computers since I was 12 years old (actually build my first Commodore C64 out of 3 non working ones) so I think I know how to sort out a problem methodically and not by guessing.
The issues I experienced also got me thinking. Why is something Orthos, Prime, etc. stable as a rock but won´t run anything with 3D-graphics? What has that to do with OC the CPU? RAM was sorted out (relaxed timings, 533 MHz with 800 MHz RAM), but looking at some chipset diagramms in tests, it is the northbridge, which connects the PCI-E and therefore the GPU to the CPU. So it was only logical for me to assume that it must be the NB or the BIOS implementation causing the problem. Of course i tested with all different NB voltage options, combinations with VCore etc. Nothing worked, curiously even turning off some powersaving features but changing nothing else prevented the system from posting at settings it had booted to windows before...
Even if I am pleased with my results now (3,015 GHz now at stock voltages rock solid throughout the day) I find the behaviour of the board and the BIOS very strange in the 240+ FSB range with the E4300...
PS: I tested it, it even works flawlessly with maxxed NB voltage at the current 3,015 GHz, which falsifies your too high voltage at a certain power requirement theory, at least for my board. Don´t missunderstand me, I am not posting this just to be right but I think this should be quite interesting and perhaps give some more insight into the problems with this board...
I am going to bed now, having an exam tomorrow.
    Greetings from northern germany,

  • New Mac Pro with Lion and can't install FCP.

I got a new Mac Pro with Lion and can't install FCP that worked fine in SL.  Is it not compatible?  Is it really a PowerPC program???  I'm a videographer and rely on this software and to spend $300 to continue to use it after spending a lot more for this software 4 years ago!  Tell me this is not the case and there is a solution to installing FCP.

How to run FCP 6 (FCS 2) under Lion.
The installer for FCP 6 (FCS 2) is a PPC app. The Programs themselves are Intel. If your trying to install FCP 6 (FCS 2) this work-around will work...
First you need to install Rosetta from your Snow Leopard OS installation disc:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/27987.html
After doing that you can install FCP 6 (FCS 2). Remember, after installing FCP 6 (FCS 2) you need to apply the updates. This has been discuss many times in the Final Cut Studio forum.
If your trying to install FCP version 5.1 (FCS 1) (a PPC app) and below your out of luck....

I just bought an new ipad mini with wifi and cellular. Is there any way to send text messages to people and contacts that do not have iphones such as friends with blackberrys or a samsung galaxy smartphone from this ipad. Everytime I try to send a message to a person that does not have an Apple product ( Iphone or Ipad ) it comes up saying contact is not registered for iMessage and wont send it. I can only send them a message from my iPhone 4 instead. Do I have to install a new App from the App store to send these non iMessage cell users a message?

I am unable to connect to my Wi-Fi at home, but am able to connect at work.  Using my new iPad 4G with cellular and a Motorola SBG6580.  My iPad 3G Wi-Fi only connects just fine; the 4G just "spins the gear."

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

I have the new macbook pro with retina and I am trying to back it up, with wd passport for mac and is telling me it is going to take 7days. Any Ideas? Im afraid that means there is something wrong with my hard drive. I have verified the disk and it says everthing is ok.

It seems to be a common problem that those drives don't perform well, at least not with Time Machine.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Post the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

  • Poor Overclock With E4300 And P965 Platinum

I have recently built a Core 2 Duo system based around the P965 Platinum motherboard which I bought based on the excellent reviews it appears to have received.
    My system is as follows:
Core 2 Duo E4300 with standard cooler
    MSI P965 Platinum
    ATI X1900GT
    1GB Kingston DDR2 667 Valueram
    2xWD 160GB Hard Disks in RAID 0
Antec Sonata II case with Smartpower 450W PSU.
I initially tried overclocking to 266FSB which worked flawlessly. All I did was slow the memory slightly so it wasnt overclocked. It worked beautifully, including Speedstep functionality and in SiSoft Sandra beat the E6600 comfortably which runs at a similar speed.
As soon as I try to go above this speed the system wont boot and all the fans run at their maximum. It doesnt even POST.
I have tried disabling speedstep etc, and increased voltages slightly. I also slowed the memory further so it is running at 1:1 ratio (532MHz at 266FSB), but I still cannot get past 266FSB.
    Any suggestions?
I also note that the board does the strange start-stop thing from cold, and if it has been left off for a long time the screen is scrambled when I start it. Any suggestions on these?
    Cheers,
    James

    You're not alone..
My fighting with this motherboard began the first moment I put my brand new E4300.
This is the absoluto WORST motherboard in the Galaxy for the E4300, and the reasons, I should explain shortly (I hope someone at MSI is reading this and DO SOMETHING about it)
    The short version:
There are 3 straps for configuring the speed of each processor on the Intel family.
the 800 strap, the 1066 strap and the 1333 strap,  these are the straps working on the 4000 and 6000 family of core2
When you're in the 1066 strap, the motherboard configures the PCI lock correctly and you can safely clock the board from 266 to even 370 or 450 in some cases with the latest BIOS and good MCP voltage... but.
When you're in the 800 strap like me (all E4300 are in the 800 strap)  the motherboard incorrectly identify the information and it simply DOES NOT LOCK the PCI bus speed correctly...
Conclusion:  when you excede 266 Mhz speed you already have the PCI clocked so far away from the standard speed, that really is a divine grace that the motherboard boots.. and if it does.. you will have a corrupted HD or you may even lost some PCI card to this.. so... it is really DANGEROUS to set any speed higher than 240-250 for this strap on this motherboard.
Sure, there are alternatives you may ask... yes,  all gigabyte motherboards and the P5B series correcly identify the 800 strap (200fsb) and Lock the PCI so you can overclock to hell with that one... not on this motherboard.
There IS an alternative... the alternative is to PIN MOD the processor (remember the Conductive Pen?) to FORCE the motherboard into believeing that you have in effect, a 266 (1066Mhz) processor and then, configuring the strap accordingly..
    well... no.
It works on the 99% of the motherboards I tried (yes, I did that mod succesfully and unlocked the 1066 strap, booting with 266 bus on a P5B, a 680i SLI and even a 570 SLI motherboard,  with a MINIM clock of 3.2Ghz, what do you think?)
    BUT
and is a very great BUT,  NOT with this motherboard.
For some brilliant idea of the MSI engineers, the motherboard start up at 266Mhz and then it clearly tells you that this is in fact a 200Mhz processor,  then, a BIOS halt ocurred and you have a corrupted CMOS setup,  the only way to stop from losing the motherboard is to install another processor and re-flash it...
so even forcing a 1066Mhz strap is a NO GO with this motherboard that REFUSES to take information from the SAME PINOUT the rest of the motherboard makers follow to regulation and in fact WORKS and reads the information from the clock the processor gives, so.. we are stuck with a NO GO situation.
The latest bios i tried is the 3.6 bios (BETA) and this problem persist.
So,  with the P965 the long story became short at the end,  we are stuck in the WORST of the Galaxy motherboard for E4300 overclocking till MSI at least give us the freedom to choose the strap or just use the one that is detected. Until then...  that's it.
I hope this message reaches MSI,  I work for a hardware page that do reviews and you can imagine what I should say about this motherboard....
    Daniel / MaximoPC
    www.maximopc.org
Thanks, that does make sense based on what I am seeing.
Is there a way of confirming the PCI bus speed is increasing with clock speed?
This seems like it should be simple for MSI to sort?

  • New Z97 Gaming AC board and MSI gtx780

    All,
Been banging my head against the wall all night on this. Hopefully its something easy. Got my new rig assembled:
    I5 4670k
    MSI Z97-Gaming 9 AC LGA 1150 Intel Z97
    MSI Gaming N780 TF 3GD5/OC GeForce GTX 780 3GB
Have a M.2 intel SSD installed
Windows 8.1 64 installed no issues
For the life of me, I can not get the motherboard to detect the 780, I updated to the latest bios using the USB flash utility, no issues. Completed successfully.
Using the Board viewer it shows nothing in the PCIE slot, I have also tried SLOT 2 still no luck.
The MB still does not show anything inserted into the slot.
    Any suggestions would greatly appreciated...
    Thanks in advance

Well, wish I had good news, but not so much. With everything setup on a test bench the board wont even post with a card plugged into the PCIE slot. Remove the card post, and into the bios every time. Tried clearing CMOS, all 3 PCIE slots just a no go.
RMA is issued and it will be going back  tomorrow.
*Fingers crossed on the new board*
Thanks for all the suggestions, will let you know what happens when the new board arrives.
    Cheers

  • No Overclock with PT880 and SATA

OK----well it happened to me too!!!  No overclock with SATA RAID......
Board loaded WinXP like a dream----seems fast as heck----everthing as smooth as glass-----is VERY stable at stock speeds.
    Then I tried to overclock......
    201 FSB was all I could get-----RIDICULOUS!
Have fooled a little with voltages----no go
Will try Vlink settings tomorrow-----am tired and ticked off
Have been doing everything from Bios----will try the dynamic overclocking and core cell tomorrw as well.
Something is not right--------I emailed MSI and will call them as well on Monday.
Am also going to search the Abit forum and see if they have the same problem because if they do-----it's probably a chipset problem------if they don't------it's an MSI problem.
Maybe give VIA a call as well-----this board has so much potential for a $59 expense.
    If it would just overclock.....
Guess you get what you pay for......
    Wish me luck------John

OK----I hosed Windows for the second time last night playing with this board.
Beta Bios 1.42 DID NOT fix the Bios overclocking problem with SATA.
ANY overclock over 220 FSB (at least with my setup) is VERY dicey.  I crashed in windows and no matter what I try----it will not boot. -----Clear CMOS, F8, Last Known Good Config, etc. nothing-----it just restarts.
No big deal----I just rebuild the array and reload Windows------and do Windows update----but it costs me a couple of hours each time.  I won't load any real aps except benchmark applications on this machine till I'm satisfied Ive got stable settings.
    Things I've learned:
I really like "Core Cell"----it's actually a pretty good little overclocking app.  Be careful of the "Auto" setting----for me, it worked once----the 2d time I tried it was when I hosed Windows.  It is supposed to start overclocking your board moving the FSB up 1 Mghtz at a time till it finally is unstable and crashes.  Then it saves the last good setting which was stable.  Then it will use that setting at Startup when the computer boots.
Worked great the first time------I upped my voltages and tried again-----the computer got to 227 FSB and froze----it never recovered.
I haven't been able to check yet if "Dynamic Overclocking" works----or has any value----will try that once I get windows up and running again.
Am starting to get a pretty good "feel" for this board.
Am thinking a stable overclock of around 220 FSB which is dissappointing for a 2.4c----but you know what, a 3.0c or a 2.8c might be perfect for this board.  With the higher multiplier of a 3.0c (15)------a 220 FSB puts you to to 3.3 Mghtz, which is SUPER for a low cost setup----- and you can find 3.0c's for less than $200 now-----and the low price of this board makes a 3.0c very affordable.  I would think the same applies to a Prescott 2.8 or 3.0----but I have no experience with that CPU.
Bottom line-----get yourself this board----an OEM or used 3.0c, cheap RAM that will overclock to DDR 450 with fairly decent timings (most mid-line PC3200 will do that just fine) a $12 Firewire Card and a couple of cheaper Samsung or Hitachi SATA drives to run in RAID 0 as well as a used ATI 9700Pro or 9800Pro off of eBay----and you got yourself a cheap "Barn Burner"  A machine that will run with the big dogs----for about $200-300 less
Here are some additional thoughts so far....
    1. Pretty darn good board for the price!
    2.  I'm not sure VIA's new AGP/PCI lock works----or works as expected.
    3.  Default voltages seem to be low for this board-----raising almost every voltage adds to stability greatly.
    4.  Although I have not benched it-----my SATA RAID (64K Stripe) seems tremendously fast.  Small files copy so fast----that nothing even appears on the screen-----it happens so quickly----you think the computer hasn't performed the operation----but sure enough----the file has been copied.
    5.  Sound seems VERY good and has LOW CPU utilzation for an onboard solution.
Waiting to hear back from MSI and VIA----and will play with this board some more tonight.

  • HP computers with Intel and ATI/AMD switchable graphics

    Hi,
    Product Name: HP Pavilion dv6-6093ex
    Product Number : LM610EA#A2N
From HP website, I have downloaded :
'ATI Radeon Graphics Driver_ Software Packaging Number()_Driver Packaging Version 8.810.4.1000(2010)'
'AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver_ Software Packaging Number(SP55092)_Driver Packaging Version 8.882.2.3000'
I have installed a new version of Windows 7, and then got these adapters before installing any drivres::
I have installed  ''ATI Radeon Graphics Driver_ Version 8.810.4.1000".  However, while  installing ''ATI Radeon Graphics Driver' packaging version  8.810.4.1000(2010)'  on my laptop, I found that that  'ATI adapter driver' is in the packgage as in this screen shot.
Then, after installation completed, the device manager was:
I have  removed the existing drivers to where I have it down to 2 VGA adapters and the big icon screen I describe in the first screen shot, then install the 'AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver_ Software Packaging Number(SP55092)_Driver Packaging Version 8.882.2.3000'.
However, when I have installed 'AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver_ Software Packaging Number(SP55092)_Driver Packaging Version 8.882.2.3000',  I found that  AMD adpater driver is in the packgage as in this screen shot.
After installation completed, then the device manager became:
If we make a comparission between two installations, we will find that
    In the first installation:
    Mobile Intel(R) HD Graphics
    Radeon(TM) HD 6770M.
    In the second installtion:
     Intel(R) HD Graphics Family.
    Radeon(TM) HD 6770M.
Thus, my question is as follows:
First: is there any difference between 'Mobile Intel(R) HD Graphics' and 'Intel(R) HD Graphics Family.'
Second: Why is 'ATI Adapter driver'  shown in the first installation, and in the second "AMD adapter driver", however,  in either instllation,  'Radeon(TM) HD 6770M'  and 'Intel graphics' were installed? In other words, neither 'ATI' is listed in the device manager nor 'AMD'  listed on the device manager.

    Thanks a lot,
you asked me about sending my SN before and now you are asking me about  what  the Guest machine model I have is. I think   the Guest machine model will do nothing with what I am looking for. No problem with   the Guest machine model I have if you have a look again at that thread of mine.
But I am really so afraid to say that you  didn't take some of your precious time out to either read my enquiry in this thread or in the other one mentioned to at this thread.
Also, if you checked again my firt post, you will see that I've been asking why while I was installing ATI Radeon Graphics, there was ATI adapter driver.
However, when I was installing 'AMD HIgh Definitioni Graphics', there was 'AMD adapter driver'
Simply, if you have kindly a look again at my very post at this thread you understand me well that I don't have any problem with installing the latest AMD driver found in HP website, however, all AMD drivers found in HP website are not newer than what I downloaded two yeras and a half ago.
I think that  HP people don't keep abreast with updating their drivers and software.
I  downloaded my drivers and software form HP about two years and a half ago, but when I now visited the HP website, I found no drivers newer than what I downloaded two years and a half.

  • New G5 towers with intel chips

Does anyone out there know when Apple plans to release the G5 towers with intel chips? I waiting for the Quad G5 with core duo intel chip. Anyone heard anything?

Might want to take a look at www.techreport.com (though there are lots of sites with information on Intel chips and roadmaps).
Intel will launch six on June 19 with model numbers ranging from 5110 to 5160 in increments of 10. The chips will reportedly run at 1.6 GHz, 1.86 GHz, 2.0 GHz, 2.33 GHz, 2.66 GHz, and 3.0 GHz with 4 MB of L2 cache across the board, as well as front side bus speeds of 1,066 MHz for the 1.6 and 1.86 GHz models and 1,333 MHz for the rest.
    AMD isn't sitting idle either.

One thing about Intel, there is always going to be lots of reports about what to expect, code name, specs, performance. And it will be very busy 2H for 2007 for Intel.
Heat is important to servers, IT, as well as the living room. The cost of power, to cool systems, and size, can factor into and cost more long term than the cost of a system.
Optimizing OS X for these along with software is going to take time. Adobe said to expect CS3 sometime 2Q or so 2007. The G5 Quad is still a good system. Quad Core Intel chips are expected in 2008, which will be another step up.

  • What's the deal with Intel and the new kernel?

    Hi
I have trouble understanding the whole deal behind Intel's video drivers and the new kernel. What doesn't work and why? Could someone please try to explain what the problem is in a way so that a newbie like me can understand it?
    Thanks

Intel and Linux are transitioning to a new graphics system. We're in the middle of the transition, so everything's kinda suckish right now. Old kernel and drivers are better, development kernel and drivers are almost as good, and they will get much better soon.
