New to photoshop, can't use brush on layer?

Hi, i have a picture im working on, which has a part of another picture on top of it as a layer.. when i try to use the brush on the top layer, the brush paints on the background. What am i doing wrong??

Make sure you are on the layer you wish to paint on by clicking it, and it will highlight. Other than that, make sure you are using the standard brush tool.

Yes it will work. I've done it for a few users in my small office. As with anything, there are quirks that you may or may not experience. Most quirks are app-related, due to app developers hard-coding absolute paths into their apps for things like temp files (Photoshop). Strategies for resolving these sorts of quirks can be found via google. You would probably have seen these quirks already when using server-based home folders for your kids. If you haven't noticed them, then you're probably fine.
The tech note you cited should be fine. It doesn't explicitly say so, but you'll need to enable ssh on your server, at least temporarily, so you can upload your home folder to the server using scp, rsync, etc. Don't try to copy the files up to the server via Finder.
Once all your files are transferred to the server and in the right place, make sure to chown them on the server, so they are owned by the userID you created for yourself on the server.
As with anything this involved, make a good backup of your laptop first.
Note I have one user that isn't too happy with the responsiveness of the periodic mobile home syncing. She has about a decade of e-mail in her home folder, probably 50 to 100 emails per day, many with attachments. Mobile home syncing takes a long time to check and sync this huge tree of itty-bitty files, eevn with server-side file tracking turned on. The other users are happy.
The nice thing about mobile home syncing is that when a user "graduates" to an age where they've earned their own laptop, you can change them from a server home user to a mobile home user, with a minimum of fuss. Also, if you lose or break a laptop, you can add a new replacement laptop to your network, and pull-down a replica of the home folder from the server, with almost no downtime.

I have a PowerBook G4 17" 1.5Ghz with OS X 10.3.9 on the original 80GB hard drive, I've been getting a lot of problems with the computer acting very slowly and getting 'hung up' with the color wheel spinning endlessly, during which nothing responds, I can't force quit, the only thing I can do is force a shut by holding down the power key. Sometimes it takes a long time to start up. I've tried re-installing the OS but still the same problems. I ran the Apple Hardware Test which gave this error code "2STF/4/3:ATA-100 ata-6-MASTER".
Does this all mean that my hard drive is going down and I need a new one?
Can I use any size hard drive e.g. a 250GB one?
Also - If I put a new hard drive in can I then install Leopard?

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
That code means there are problems with your hard drive. If you look at Disk utility (on your hard disk in applications/utilities) you may see that the S.M.A.R.T. status shows a problem. Or if you have SMARTreporter installed, it may not be green.
You can certainly use up to a 160GB hard drive. There was a discussion recently suggesting a BIOS (basic input output services) limit to 160GB ... I don't know if that's real or not.
If you do replace your hard drive, you might consider the slight price premium for a 7200rpm drive. You'll appreciate the extra snapiness in response time. And yes, you can install Leopard on it. After installing the new hard drive, boot from the DVD drive and use disk utility to format the hard drive in mac os extended (journaled) format. Then you can install Leopard.

I'm sorry, I should have said thru Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi. I want to use the mini as a base station and the iPad like a laptop that I can sync when I'm home and carry with me when I travel. Now after 5 weeks, you have always not resolved this very important and urgent issue. It seems that Adobe has realy abandonned the actionscript / flash player projects. Why not simply discontinue flash player on desktops too ? Or even better remove or block "automaticaly" all flash players with the final update. That could create a serious issue on the Internet for few weeks but at least that will be honorable end like a Samurai's Seppuku...

Windows 7 x64 -- Suddenly can't use brushes, PS crashes

OS: Windows 7 Professional x64
PS: Photoshop CS4 Extended x64 (with patch)
WIth this particular image only, when I begin to use a brush (5px soft round) on the layer mask, it works in the spot originally clicked, but when I begin to drag, PS crashes immediately.
PS gives me a message about pixel aspect ratio correction when I open the image, which I must turn off to even see it.
Also, I attempted to attach the image now -- which is a .psd -- but I was told the content type of this attachment is not allowed. Funny.

I just updated my video card drivers...Win7 didn't even recognize it (it's a nvidia) until I installed the new ones -- and yes, they are compatible with Windows 7.
I really don't think it's the video card rendering...after all, if it were, wouldn't it occur when I used brushes on every image? Like I said, it only happens with this certain image.

New to FiOS, can I use my own modem and router

I saw several questions similar to mine, but none that I saw answered my question for my scenario. I am sorry if this is a duplicate. I am new to FiOS. I have no other services from Verizon and do not plan to get any. No phone, no television, nothing. Just Internet. God willing, the installation will take place in two days. My house already has coaxial cabling. I have my own cable modem, a SURFboard SB6121, which goes to my router, a TP Link TL-WR941ND. None of my equipment advertises that it is FiOS compatible. I've seen other people asking about using their own modem and router, but in those cases the scenario involved other bundled services, and I understand a FiOS router is necessary to forward ports to television, phone, and computers. However, in my very simple scenario, can the Verizon optical network terminal simply feed its output to my coax, from there to my modem, then router, then comptuers? Is there any reason that wouldn't work? Verizon technical support just gave me a machine that wanted to help me troubleshoot my Internet connection, and I couldn't get from there to a human. Thanks in advance for the help!

Banish the word and the device called "modem" from your home when using FiOS. FiOS does not use modems. Your cable modem is useless with FiOS. Do not plug it in. FiOS uses routers. The router connects to the ONT's WAN port using MoCA (coax) or Ethernet. The installer will enable one of the ONT's WAN ports. If you order 150Mbps or higher speeds, they will have to use Ethernet. For slower speeds, coax is the default. Many installers will use Ethernet if you ask nicely, but usually only if it isn't too much work. Make sure it's easy to connect a router to the ONT using Ethernet, and you should be okay. If Ethernet needs to be run through the walls, your best choice is get it done ahead of time. You can always call later and get the ONT's WAN port switched. The only routers available with a MoCA WAN port are the Verizon models. The Verizon routers are good devices for most users. People who like to tweak their networking gear don't like them as many advanced features are limited or locked down. You can't run any other router firmware on them. WiFi range is decent, but not great. I'm quite happy with my Quantum router. YMMV. If you get Ethernet WAN enabled, you can use any router you want. However, know that Verizon provides zero support for any other router. They won't even mention it as an option. That doesn't mean you can't use one, simply that you must do so without Verizon's help. There are reports that they won't even complete an install without one of their routers to verify service. If you don't use one of their routers, consider renting one for a month to complete the install or even buying a used one. If you own a Verizon router, you can install it if you ever suspect Verizon networking issues. This will allow you to call their support. Just got my new imac and have discovered it is without a cd/dvd drive. Since I have converted from a mac mini can I use the old mini as an external drive, and how do I do that if the response is yes?

My last cd/dvd burner was a LaCie, and it worked perfectly for three years before a bronze sculpture fell off a shelf and landed on it, putting a big dent right in the top of the metal case. I thought that would be the end, but it kept working perfectly, dent and all, for another two years before I finally replaced it.
When my current drive needs to be replaced, that will be a LaCie, too. Same with their external hard drives. And no, I don't work for them.

I have Elements 12. I'm a new user. Can I use the organizer as a simple viewer of photographs from a file without opening each individual photo up individually like you do with the editor? Sometimes I just want to look at the pictures.

I was digging around with the instructional videos offered at the Adobe site and I believe I have answered my own question. The key is to import the photos into the Organizer and then it can be used as a simple viewer. I have always been hesitant to import any of my photos into any kind of "organizer" in the past and always just viewed the photos from the file folder as I wanted. But the MS viewer is not very handy from my point of view and I always used Photo Impressions in the past on my other computer. I don't want to download this software again due to all the adware that I expect will be present in the free version. My virus software will choke on it I'm sure.
