New to RoboHelp - v5.0.2 ?

Hello!
Sorry that I may have misplaced this thread here, but I
really don't know where it is supposed to go.. I have searched
through the forums but maybe my search strings are off.
Here at my office, I have been assigned the undertaking of
keeping our documentation up to date within our robohelp system..
What does this mean? Well I really don't know. I barely know my way
around robohelp and wouldn't you know? I don't have the time
between Captivate and training to really familiarize myself with
it, other than booting it up and crashing around in it..
Here is my problem. I was asked by my boss, to find out if we
would be able to havea link for the user of our system to print off
whatever they were looking at. My answer "Sure!" Then the puzzler
was dropped on me:
"Would they also then be able to print off that chapter or
sub-chapter?"
Doh!! I have been looking around but don't see anything that
just screams out to me to be related to printing within the system.
Just to clarify, I do not want to print this documentation, but
rather be able to throw in a link (or button what have you..), that
would allow a user to print off all of the pages within a
particular chapter/book.
I'm sorry if I am not making any sense. Thanks for any help
in advance!

Hi Colum!
Thank you for the reply. "rohelp" I did not mention.. I do
not know where you got that from ,but what you describe "rohelp" as
is correct. I do have a set of "workfiles" and then an actual
"project file" for robohelp. The system is HTML I believe. It is an
integrated system for our web-based application (SISK12). I can
give you a link to a sample instance for reference via a PM or
email if you would like, to get a better perception of what we are
doing with it. We have everything pretty much set up (I think - i
wasn't a big part of hte inital development of this system; just
charged with it's maintenance and updating).
Sorry if I have typos. I try to catch the ones I can, but
this DiNovo Wireless Desktop of mine has been very well used and
abused in the last 8 months that I have had it! (space bar is
getting finicky!)
Thank you for the reply and the help!

  • New Article - RoboHelp projects with Subversion and TortoiseSVN

Some folks have posted questions about Subversion and TortoiseSVN in this forum, so I thought I'd pass along this new article I found in the Adobe Developer Network this week that goes in to detail on how to set up this open-source solution with RoboHelp:

  • What is new in RoboHelp 8 for Word ?

Did Adobe make any fixes or add any new stuff to the RH for Word with the version 8?
The only features they describe where RH for Word is mentioned on the Feature page was how to NOT install it by default.
Any one using this that used past versions see differences?

    Hi there
Colum is a teensy bit misleading in his reply. Certainly he is spot on with most of it, but the bit about WinHelp not being supported out of the box on Vista is technically incorrect.
What is technically correct is that 32 bit WinHelp is not directly supported. The first time you attempt to run a 32 bit WinHelp file you are prompted to download the 32 bit WinHelp display engine. But support out of the box is there for 16 bit WinHelp with no download needed.

What version are you using? Search highlighting in WebHelp was introduced in version 7.

The interface for RoboHelp HTML is easier to use than Word. The biggest hurdle many face is the loss of Tab Stops. You really would do yourself a favor if you tried RoboHelp HTML. It too is a very nice (and mature) product.

I do use RoboHtml for some smaller help systems, but those are mostly help systems that contain less than 50 pages. To maintain my afore mentioned WebHelp system using RoboHtml would, unfortunately, very much decrease my productivity....
I'd say it depends greatly on how you structured your content. I never noticed that I had any sort of productivity loss as a result of switching. Sure, you have multiple documents with many topics in each document. In the RoboHelp HTML world each topic is an HTML page. But you knew that already. What I'm guessing may be news for you is that you may organize HTML pages into folders.

  • With new PC RoboHelp for Word will not open

When I try to open RoboHelp for Word, this error message
    appears:
"The version of Microsoft Word you have installed is not
supported. Please install an earlier version of Word before running
    RoboHelp for Word."
With this new PC installation, I'm still using Word 2003,
which is the same version that I used previously. However, the PC's
operating system is now XP, whereas it was previously Windows 2000.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you!
    Janice

Peter and Brian, THANKS so much! RoboHelp for Word is working
    now.
Peter, your advice to install RoboHelp AFTER installing Word
was key in solving this problem.
For a quick summary of the result -- our Help Desk
uninstalled and reinstalled Outlook, Word, and RoboHelp. Then they
reinstalled Word and Outlook; needed to change an "Advanced"
setting in outlook; to get Word to stop giving me the error
messages, they needed to redo my user profile. Then after I was
confident that Word and Outlook were working correctly, this
afternoon I installed RoboHelp X5 via my CD, and then downloaded
and installed these two patches from Adobe.com:
    - rho_x501.exe (for the RH Office Word 2003 Support Update)
    - rho13_x502.exe (for the Microsoft XP Service Pack 2 Support
    Update X5.0.2).
I'm so thankful that RoboHTML and RoboHelp for Word seem to
    be working well! Thanks again!
    Janice
P.S. I do have one more question about a patch that I've not
yet loaded, but I'll post that under a separate subject.

RoboHelp 10's HTML5 support enables multiscreen support on a variety of devices. Help files are no longer limited to the traditional "tri-pane" layout. Text and graphics can dynamically resize with many devices. This is one of several videos that highlight key features in the latest release of Technical Communication Suite 4 (TCS4), which includes FrameMaker 11 (FM11), RoboHelp 10 (RH10), Captivate 6 (CP6) and more. With TCS4, work faster and smarter with cross-product integration. Easily author and enrich XML/DITA content. • New to robohelp

I am trying to develop a javahelp application using robohelp
    but have the following problem:
I have imported numerous HTML files. In the TOC I have
created a book and grouped some of the topics in that book. When
the application is launched I would like the user to be able to
click on the book and a blank screen display(i.e. map the book to a
blank file??) and allow the user to select which pages from within
that book they would like to view. Can this be done without editing
    the map file.
    Thanks for your help.

I totally agree with Colum and Leon. I would stare at a blank
screen for several minutes, while cursing Windows (the scapegoat
for everything), before I would even notice the TOC. But here is
what you would do. Create a topic (blank, if you must) and link it
to your book. Also link it to the context help. Then when the help
is fired you get what you (or your management - you wouldn't be
    Dilbert, would you?) wants.
Personally, I'd take the 'blank' topic and sneak in a few
links - "background" or "instructions" - just so something loads
when the topic is opened. Or you could follow Colum's lead (which
had me laughing) and link to "good help" or "bad help" - the "bad
help" opening the requested blank page. In the theme of another
thread going, you could put a hit counter on the bad help and see
how many users actually choose that option.

  • Fixing the path for images in RoboHelp 8

I am rather new to Robohelp, so please forgive me if this has been addressed in another dicussion...I have been searching and cannot seem to find what I am looking to describe.
I am working in Robohelp 8, and  creating a new help system by importing topics from a previous help system. The problem I am running into and I cannot see how to fix is that there are a couple of topics that have images where instead of the path for the image directed to a folder called "Images" in the main directory, it dumps the graphic into the project manager window when I import the topic. I tried viewing topics that don't have their images on the main project manager window, and comparing against the one that does, and I cannot see the difference. I have tried renaming the images and placing in the correct folders, and then inserting the images into the topics, but it still tries to look at the main folder and still dumps the image into the project manager.
Any help you can provide please share.

I am going to say yes (because it sounds like what I am trying to get at, but not sure).....I have tried deleting the images, and recreating, and then re-inserting into the topic, and they still go to the root of project. As I am going along, I am finding more and more.....so far there are 20 images that are doing this.  However, I also just did what you mentioned and dragged it and put it under the topic. But I am still confused as to why I would need to do this for some topics and for other topics the images don't appear at all (meaning they don't show under topics or root of project), they are just linked through the folder on the main directory. Does this image help more?
Left of picture above: The folder directory has a folder called Images, and this is where all of the images were stored and are stored for the new project.
Middle of picture above: The topic Horizontal Command had an image in it "image20.gif", and it was at the root directory and as you suggested I moved to the topic. Also see the topic circled Expand and Collapse Folders topic has the image circled at the left within it.
What I am trying to understand is why would the graphic from the Horizontal command topic dump into the root of the project, while the image from the Expand and Collapse Folders topic not show on the root project or even within the topic listed. (Which is what I prefer for all topics).

  • New folder is not visible inside my project but shows in Windows Explorer.

I created a new folder under another folder.  The new folder is not visible inside my project but shows in Windows Explorer.  Also, if I try to add another folder of that same name, it denies the action since the folder (although invisible) already exists.  My co-worker can access the same file (on a share drive) and see the new folder just fine.  This error occurs whether I was the one creating the new folder or she is the one creating the new folder.  I am new to RoboHelp and she has used it for years.  I suspect something is not yet set up right on my side.  Ideas? (I thought I posted this yesterday but I can't find it anywhere)

    Hi there
What version of RoboHelp are you using?
Did you create the folder from inside RoboHelp or did you create it using Windows Explorer?

  • Opening Default Topic page in a new window

    Hi there,
I am new to RoboHelp HTML. I have recently started using it
for work and was asked to look into something.
    I am using version 7.
The problem we have is that the RoboHelp html files are being
incorporated into a web application. There is a link in the
application called "User Guide". This link opens up the RoboHelp
html files in the same browser window as the application.
Therefore, when the user wishes to go back to the application or
close the help files, he/she can't because it's all in one window
and the application has session (so it wont let you go back to the
application if you are in the help).
I know it's possible to simply add a Target="_blank" to the
actual "User Guide" link on the application side - for it to open
the help files in a new browser window.
However, I wanted to know if there is any way to configure
the RoboHelp HTML to start the inital page - default topic in a new
window from the actual RoboHelp software.
Can someone shed some light on this please?
I hope my question is clear enough, like I said, I am new to
RoboHelp so my apologies if I haven't explained myself clearly
enough or used the right words.
    Anyways, let me know.
    Thanks!

Hi Estel-mm and welcome to our community
Your requirement cannot be met with simple use of RoboHelp
HTML. It will likely require hand crafting some special JavaScript
function to make it work. And here's the rub. Assuming you get it
to work, it may have an adverse effect in that if you configure the
default topic to open this way and your end user just happens to
land on that Default topic again, poof! Another new window.
    Just a thought... Rick

  • It's official. RoboHelp Lives!

Thanx to Chuck Martin, scribe at the WritersUA conference
here in Palm Springs, there's good news about RoboHelp.
    http://ua2006.blogspot.com/
There have been group forums and nearly 20 separate
one-on-one meetings between RoboHelp engineering and product
managers and RoboHelp users over the past two days and more
sessions tomorrow. Adobe has had an earful of requests for future
development. Clearly, Adobe has a way different attitude and is
    aggressively pursuing new development.
    Stay tuned.
    John

There are still some who have not see the messages on this
and other message boards. To clarify and bring together the various
reports, I will try to be as specific as I can about what I know
regarding RoboHelp's future. This is based on reporting at the
    WritersUA conference, April 9-12.
    1. On April 11, at the WritersUA conference Karl Matthews,
Adobe Group Product Marketing Manager made a public statement to
several hundred technical writers at the gathering. He said that
Adobe is committed to RoboHelp and that a new release was in
progress and expected "in the first quarter of 2007, if not
before." So, while this may not be the "date certain" that many
would like, it is about as specific as can be expected, given that
Adobe is a public company and they must be careful because of SEC
    regulations.
    2. Among the 7 Adobe representatives at this conference in
addition to Karl were Vipul Bansar, RoboHelp's Product Manager and
Vivek Kumar, directing RoboHelp's engineering effort on the next
release, Michael Hu, RoboHelp's Product Marketing Manager, Jeff
Booher, engineering (who goes back to Blue Sky Software and eHelp),
RJ Jacquez, RoboHelp and Framemaker evangelist (also formerly of
eHelp), and Raul Ramos, Product Support Specialist (also formerly
    with eHelp)
    3. During the three-day conference, there was a RoboHelp
Customer Advisory Forum held with the Adobe representatives with 12
writers representing many facets of the user community offer their
ideas on the next release. In addition, there were more than 20
additional one-on-one meetings between RoboHelp users and Adobe
    engineers.
    4. The meetings of these more than 30 RoboHelpers resulted
from a public invitation to submit a questionnaire offering their
thoughts on RoboHelp's future. Anyone can still download this
questionnaire and submit it so that their thoughts are included.
    You will find it here
    http://www.hypertexas.com/
    5. From my discussions with the engineering team, I gathered
that considerable progress was made at WritersUA. We often think of
these kinds of gatherings as superficial marketing events. But as
an instructor, concerned about Adobe's commitment, I was pleased to
see they came to WritersUA to "work" rather than schmooze.
    6. Adobe is positioning RoboHelp as part of a family of
technical documentation tools that include Framemaker, Captivate
and Acrobat. Personally, I think this is a great group of products
as they can all thrive on the synergy.
The Adobe folks remarked that the rich input they received
will actually accelerate the process because it both validated some
key development areas as well as exposed others that should receive
more attention than they first realized. I got the impression that
because of WritersUA, the release would be sooner not later.
As for working with WIndows Vista, future XML help formats
and the rest, it certainly makes sense that a company of Adobe's
stature would release a product that is compatible with such a
    major operating system.
I am not an Adobe employee, nor an official spokesperson. I
am an independent RoboHelp instructor since 1992 and very happy to
see that Adobe has taken a 180 degree turnaround from the previous
    management.

  • RoboHelp 9 search results icons and context

I have some formatting issues with the search results.  In the image below I want 2 things to change.  I would like to remove the extra info and simply have the link.  I also want to ditch the little icon.  I am pretty new to RoboHelp so ask me any info I may have excluded.
    RoboHelp 9

Sorry for the forums issue. I know how those can be!
Apologies in advance if you feel I'm speaking down to you in any way. As you seem unfamiliar with RoboHelp's outputs, I'm guessing you may also be unfamiliar overall with RoboHelp.
Using RoboHelp is a lot like working in a kitchen. You mix "ingredients" that consist of Topics (HTML Pages) Images, Video and whatever else. And RoboHelp assists you in mixing these.
In a kitchen, you prepare a dish for someone to consume. Generally, you prepare the dish based on a recipe. That recipe may exist in the form of a card in a small recipe box. In RoboHelp, there is a pod called the Single Source Layouts pod. This is just like the Recipe Box. And each layout type is just like a recipe card in the box. There are layouts for WebHelp, for Microsoft HTML Help, for AIR Help, etc.
One of these is nominated to be the default. That's just like moving that particular recipe card to the front of the recipe box.
So when you create your output (your recipe) I'm asking what type of output you created. Which layout has "default" beside its name in the Single Source Layouts pod? That's likely to be the one you are using and seeing what you are seeing.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Pop Up Behavior in RoboHelp 9

My company has just upgraded from RoboHelp 7 to RoboHelp 9 and I am fairly new to RoboHelp so I was wondering if anyone can help me figure out an issue I am experiencing. I am working on a project that originated in RH7 that has been updated for RH9. I ran the "Update DHTML Effects Tool" and tried everything I could think of to try to address this issue but I'm stymied.
This project makes very frequent use of pop-ups that link to other topics/images for quick reference.  I noticed that the pop-ups that originated in RH7 appear to work fine - i.e., clicking on a link results in a pop-up that does just that....pops up over the link. However when previewing topics that contain pop-ups that were added in RH9, clicking on the link to reveal the pop up causes the screen to scroll to the beginning of the host topic rather than just having the pop up appear where the link is.  Once the pop-up is dismissed, you must scroll back down to the link in order to resume reading the original topic. This occurs with both auto-sizing and custom-sized pop ups.
Is there a control or code that must be implemented to prevent this behavior in RH9?
    Thanks in advance!

Yes, the same issue occurs when generating the output and viewing the topic.  I should note that the project is using a template that was created in RH7. When importing that template as a "Master Page" and starting from scratch in a new project, the issue does not appear to occur.
I did also notice that links to bookmarks within other topics do not work correctly in the upgraded project.  The bookmarks are present and the highlighted text is still linked to the bookmark but when previewing (or reviewing in the final output) the link brings up the start of the topic containing the bookmark, not the text that has been bookmarked.  Each link has to be redefined in order to work properly.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Error occuring when creating new folder.

I am new to Robohelp and have been teaching myself the program to fix and upgrade my companies on line help system.  I believe the last time the help system was updated was 2009 and it was in Robohelp 8.   I have upgraded the program into Robohelp 11 and am starting to edit the project.   I am coming up against a few issues and have questions.
    1.  How do you move the entire project file off the network location and make a local version.  My network is slow and seems to be causing errors.
    2.  I just tried to create a new folder in the main project folders for a new folder topic and recieved this error.
I apologize if these are silly questions.  I am no developer but I am trying to help my company upgrade our on line help!
    Thanks!

    Hi there
To move the project, from RoboHelp, look at your Project Manager pod. Right-click a topic and choose Explore. That will open Windows Explorer at your project location. Then close the project in RoboHelp.
Now from that Windows Explorer window, click and drag the folder where the project is to your C drive. Personally, I always advise to create a folder named "Projects". ( C:\Projects ) then create folders inside that folder for each project.
Now re-open the project in RoboHelp and you should be working on the local drive and all should operate much more efficiently.
Likely the error resulted from working on the network. Network is never really advisable in my own opinion.
If you want some training, I'd be happy to work with you on a contract basis.

  • Using RoboHelp to create online tutorials?

Our company currently uses RoboHelp to create our Help
Systems. As a training developer, who has used a course authoring
software package for the past five years, I was wondering if
RoboHelp would be a good environment to develop training tutorials.
I love the fact that you can search and index the help systems and
thought the potential may be there to search for information within
    tutorials as well.
I know Captivate is the software simulation product, however
a lot of our training material is either mainly text, or numerous
screen shots showing an individual how to use an application.
As I am new to RoboHelp, does anyone have any advice?
    Thanks in advance.

Like Colum, welcome to the Forums!
(The following assumes the WebHelp Pro scenario you outlined)
    >>>1. How do I set the window to have the right
frame display initially, without the left index frame? I want to
leave the index frame so that the user can access it if neccesary.
    1. Make sure WebHelp Pro is your primary layout.
    2. Create a new Window, call it OnePane and select the
tickbox in Window properties for One Pane and click OK. (This means
the Navigation pane (Contents, Index, Search, etc.) are hidden when
    first launched.
    3. Bring up the WebHelp Pro single source layout wizard.
    4. Tick the box: Show navigation pane link in topics (this is
what allows the user to opt to see the Index and navigation pane if
    they want.
    5. Be sure to select "OnePane" as your default window you
just created and complete the wizard to publish.
    6. Caveat: There is a shortcoming when you view locally from
the authoring machine. You will not be able to see the effects of
your changes. These can only viewed in a web browser pointed to
    your actual WebHelp Pro site.
    7. Publish to the RoboEngine server to view all the changes
you made and notice the "Show" link that allows the user to reveal
    the navigation pane.
    >>>2. Our Help System is in HTML, but I am thinking
of using WebHelp Pro (from a dedicated server). When I View Primary
Layout, the index frame and button at the top of the form do not
display. I get the yellow box located just below the Internet
Explorer toolbar saying 'To help protect your security, Internet
Explorer has resticted this file from showing active content that
could access your computer. Click here to for options....'. That
could be a real pain for 1200 users. Is there a way to if off for
    RoboHelp WebHelp Pro?
I believe you may be encountering something that is only seen
by you because you're viewing it locally. When published, the user
would not see this. To remove this annoying message, go to Internet
Options > Advanced > scroll down to Security and tick the box
"Allow active content to run on My Computer." (Also, for more info,
do a search in the forums for "Mark of the Web")
    >>>3. Can I create my own skin?
Sure. Use the WebHelp skin editor as you normally would. Give
the skin a name and use it when you publish.
    Hope this helps.

  • Robohelp HTML V7 -Printed Documentation Why do I get 2 TOCs?

    Hi,
I'm new to Robohelp using HTML V7 but will be upgrading to V8 shortly.  I've created Help Files, but additionally I need to create Word and PDF files from the same source.  I am getting two Table of Contents in my Word output...one numbered with Roman numerals and another with regular page numbers.  I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.  Can anyone help?

Hi Rick. Thanks for the quick reply.
Output view? - Yes, there are some HHC5003 errors for some missing images but nothing related to the topic or image in question that I can see.
Image referenced? - Yes, it's being referenced in the RH html properly. However, the html somehow gets corrupted in the chm file. In the chm file, if I right-click on the file and choose View | Source, there is some odd code though where that image should be (shown in red):
