NEW TO SSD

Hi, guys. I will be getting a Intel SSD soon, probably this friday. I have no idea how to install a SSD in a macbook pro. My friend told me that the only thing I do is take out the factory HDD, and install the SSD. Is that simple? Do I need to concern about firmware for Intel SSD? What about Mac OS X? Can I just simply use the restore DVD that came with the Macbook pro??
Thanks, if you can tell me exactly how to do it, I appreciate it.

much easier, i have done it with the intel ssd also !
first put the intel ssd in a extern sata case and connect via usb to the mac.
second make a clone with superduper, this works 100% and all your data is copied.
now exchange the drive and start your mbp; this takes for the first time a little bit long, don't be nervous.
before you restart choose the ssd as the startupvolume in the system-pane.
after this look in the "about this mac" under sata, what version, this should be 8820 (the latest)
if not download firmware here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=3114& OSFullName=AllOperatingSystems&lang=eng&strOSs=All&submit=Go%21
very easy to do, read instruction.
firmware update means NO loose of data on ssd and can only be done in the mac and not extern !!!
p.s. the download is for the 160gb ssd, if you get another search in the downloadcenter !

  • New mSata SSD Doesn't Fit Slot in y510p

    Hello,
I recently purchased a intel 530 240GB ssd for my extra msata slot. Turns out that my new msata ssd won't fit the slot. I'm wondering if Lenovo installed the wrong type of slot on my mobo. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Hi,
The SSD you linked is an mSATA part.  It will not fit in a y510p.  It isn't just the size.  As stated earlier in this thread, the slot in the laptop (if it is there at all - some don't have an SSD slot) is for M.2/NGFF cards.  They are a completely different form factor than mSATA.
    Here's the M.2 version:  http://www.mydigitalssd.com/sata-m2-ngff-ssd.php

  • New Sandisk SSD Plus on 2011 Macbook Pro is slow

    Hello everyone,
Before I get into my issue here are some screen shots of system information.
I have recently installed a new Sandisk SSD on my early 2011 Macbook pro. After install of 0S and waited for finder to do its things I tested read and write speed using Black Magic Speed Test. My results are shown below.

    WHAT I HAVE ALREADY TRIED.
Used disk utility to verify disk and repair no issues found one problem found when repairing disk permissions but it was repaired.
    Fresh install of OS 10.7

Verified disk was actually selected in systems preferences.
Im at a standstill I have ran out of ideas of what it could be. I cannot appear to find anyone else who did not resolve this issues by following one or more of the steps above.

I searched that kernel process that is shown eating up my CPU and applied to following commands in Terminal.

I am running OS X Yosemite on my four year old MacBook Pro which has become progressively slower and is loaded with applications I no longer use. I plan to start afresh by formatting a new 1TB SSD as a boot disk and reinstalling Lightroom 5 and PhotoShop CC.
Is there a list of the files and/or folders that contain Settings and Preferences which can be copied from the old system to the new?

with your cc apps you should try to use the sync feature.  that's never worked consistently for me, but when it does work, it's helpful.
there are preference folders and presets and settings that you could copy but you're better off installing fresh because a common problem for people with adobe program issues is a settings issue.

  • Installing Snow Leopard on New Internal SSD (without External drive)

    All,
I have been searching and searching for a sufficient answer for this question, but have come up short thusfar. So any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
Basically I have an early 2009 MacBook Air (RevB) with a 128 GB HDD (not SSD). It has been painfully slow the past few months, and with the move to SSD for the new Air's - I've decided to swap my older HD for a new 64GB RunCore SSD (using the online guide from iFixit). However, as the MacBook Air inherently has no DVD drive - and the new HD will completely blank and not allow for the DVD Sharing to take place, I'm a bit stuck.
Here's where the complication sets in - I do not have (and would really rather not purchase) an external Superdrive or external DVD drive just for this one process. However, I do have a MacBook Pro that I would like to use to install Snow Leopard onto the new blank internal SSD.
Finally, I would also like to install Snow Leopard cleanly (i.e. not cloning my existing MacBook Air HD first).
Therefore, my BIG question (in three parts is:
    1) Can I install Snow Leopard onto the new internal SSD before I install the new SSD itself into the MacBook Air (i.e. the new internal SSD comes with an external enclosure to presumably allow for cloning prior to installation). Therefore, can I just install Snow Leopard from my MBP's Superdrive to the new SSD using the new SSD + Enclosure as an external HD?
    2) When complete, and then installed in the MacBook Air, will the new internal SSD boot correctly?
    3) Finally what formats should I go for (GUID, Journalled, etc.) - or is that not really applicable in this case?
    Hopefully that all makes sense...?
    And thanks in advance!
    -Eddie

Okay just copied this from a tutorial on how to do it.
*OSX 10.6 method for bootable USB key install*
Insert your retail DVD into drive.
Plug in usb key. I recommend getting at least a 16gig drive so you don’t run into capacity issues.
Open Disk Utitlity. Locatied in Applocations/Utitilties/DiskUtitily.app
Partition the USB drive and select GUID in the options so it will be bootable on a Mac.
Select restore and drag the image of the DVD on the left into the input path.
Drag the USB drive into the destination drive.
    Click the restore button.
Sit back and relax cause you will be waiting for about 20-30 mins for the key to be formatted properly.
    Hope this helps

  • I want to migrate my system disk to a new, larger, SSD.

I want to migrate my windows 7 system disk to a new, larger, SSD. My Photoshop CS5 is on the old system disk. Can I clone the old SSD to the new one and the just deactivate the CS5 install on the old SSD and activate it on the new, cloned, SSD?
I'd like this to be as painless as possible so I was going to use Acronis. My recent experience with an apple product has convinced me that "brainless" is the new modality in software......
    Thanks,

I think Acronis will easily let you achieve your goal.
Theoretically you shouldn't need to deactivate/reactivate, but I would do it anyway - just to be on the safe side.

The above requested information can be found on the bottom of the computer, inside the battery compartment, or on the BIOS startup/setup screen. Please do not include the serial number. Please enter the model/product information into HP's Online Consumer Support page and post it here for our review.
If your computer came with Windows 8, it may be possible to install the SSD and run your HP Recovery Discs successfully. If successful, your SSD will be partitoned with an OS partition and other partition. If this doesn't work you may be able to download Windows 8 OEM and install that, however your computer will have no HP customization and you won't be able to install any HP value-added software.
If your computer came with Windows 7, it is unlikely that your will be able to run your HP Recovery Discs successfully on the SSD. You may be able to download and install Windows 7, however your computer will have no HP customization and you won't be able to install any HP value-added software.
In both cases you may be able to "clone" the factory hard drive to the SSD.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

If I would be buying now the mSATA, I would invest in M500 mSATA. I have very positive experience with Crucial M4 CT256M4SSD3 mSATA, running very reliable for more than 6 months now. The only downturn is that M4 mSATA is running in SATA2 mode in W520 but to be honest, in everyday work I can neglect it, with the differences in speed and access time compared to my two other SSD in slots 0 I can live - on mSATA is OS, programs and data, on other 2 SSD's are virtual machines. I really hope that with upcomming haswell intel processors the lenovo will implement all 6 SATA ports in SATA3 mode in ThinkPad W540, at least the upcomming intel chipset should (Z87) should be offering it.

  • Can't boot from install disc after new RAM & SSD install

I decided to breathe some new life in to my 2007 2.2GHz MacBook by:
    -upgrading the RAM to 4gb w/Centon memoryPOWER 2GB DDR2-667 PC2-5300 CL5 SO-DIMM Laptop Memory Module
-replace the HDD with a SSD (Samsung 840 Pro-Series MZ-7PD128BW 128GB SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Solid State Hard Drive).
-Also going from Leopard to Snow Leopard after the hardware upgrade, then possibly Lion/Mountain Lion...
    What I've already done:
    1. Backed up my hard drive using time machine, did not clone
    2. Using the install disc/Disc Utility, I erased my old hard drive completely (Hope that wasn't a huge mistake!)
    3. Replaced the previous 2gb (1x1gb) with the new 2x2gb RAM sticks
    4. Swapped out the HDD with the SSD
When I went to boot the machine, all I get is a black screen. I can hear the optical drive spin for a while, then stop. Screen remains completely black. I have tried using C while starting as well as Control - same result. So, I put the old (erased) HDD back in and again got the same result. I didn't have time to put the old RAM back in and try again before work this morning and intend to tonight. Based on that, maybe my RAM isn't compatible even though the specs look to be...? But, does anyone know if the components I am using are not compatible? or did I totally screw up by erasing the old Drive prior to confirming this would work? Am I missing something else?
Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

I was finally able to get it done using my old RAM, so that must be the weak link. I'm going to try to return the RAM I bought and try a different brand. Thanks For the response!

  • Recovery on a new drive SSD

I've just purchased a new EliteBook 8770w and a SSD and wanted to replace the primary HDD, so I created a recovery disk with the HP tool.
But when I swap the drives and put only the new SSD, and press F11 during the boot, no Recovery Manager starts up.
If I try to boot from the first backup CD, Windows 7 installation starts up. Any idea what's going on here?
    1. Can I attach the both drives and run Recovery Manager from the original Windows and restore it on the second (SSD)?
    2. Is this the best approach to change the primary HDD?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi:
Unless the SSD is the same size as your original mechanical drive, recovery disks won't work.
I would make my own w7 installation media and then use that to install W7 on the SSD.
I would also copy the SWSetup folder off the C:\drive and store it on a portable hard drive because that contains all of the program installation files that came with your PC (except MS Office 2010 Starter).
    Here's how to do that:
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Or use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link and instructions below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.

  • How do I do I install Mountain Lion on a new, blank SSD?

I've ordered a SSD for my MacBook Pro.  I don't want to copy my hard drive to the new drive.  How do I install a new system on a blank SSD when you need to have at least some type of system runnning to run an update or install from the App store?  Thanks!

Well, first you're going to have to format the drive. I would suggest buying an inexpensive USB enclosure for your old hard drive (OWC has tons of them - and I have three that I purchased from OWC). Then install your SSD into your hard drive bay and put your old hard drive into the enclosure and boot from your old drive. Then you can format your SSD using Disk Utility from your old drive.
Now as to installing ML on that new SSD. Since you'gve already purchased it, you can download it to your old HD before you even begin switching out drives. After it downloads, it will try to install. Quit the installation and you'll have a file named "Install OS X Mountain Lion.app" in your Applications folder. You can use this app to install ML on your new SSD.
Pretty simple, really - sorry of I make it seem complicated. I'm assuming that you're going to start 'clean' on this SSD and not clone your old HD to your SSD? You can do that, if you like... see https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4741.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • What is the correct way to transfer data from old hard drive to new Crucial SSD on a mid 2010 13" MBP

I just bought an Crucial M550 256GB for my mid 2010 MBP. And I'm not clear on the data transfer instructions.
    1) it came with Acronis instalation kit with a blank CD and a usb cable. I'm not sure what this CD is used for?
    2) is it best to install the SSD with a fresh OSX download and then just use time machine to load all my previous settings?
    3) or do I partition the SSD before I install it in the MBP and transfer using a clone?
Not sure what to do here...

Well, I am not familiar with the Crucial kit you got - you might want to ask them about that blank CD...... however, I did install an SSD and this is what I did:
I ordered a kit from OWC which included an external USB hard drive enclosure and tools. When it arrived, I first installed it in the external enclosre, hooked it to my MBP and then used CarbonCopyCloner to make a full bootable clone of my system on the new SSD after formatting it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the GUID partition scheme. I then uninstalled the internal, installed the SSD in its place (following the install video availabe at OWC) and booted up - that was it. I installed the old internal drive into the external enclosure for an instantaneous bootable cbackup.

  • How do i Legitimately transfer windows 8.1 OS to new 500GB SSD?

I ordered an HP Envy 15t Quad laptop customized from HP.com with nvidia geforce graphics, 16gb ram, and 1 tb hardrive no mssd acceleration, and the sales guy told me i would need a recovery program. My laptop does not come with an optical drive so i need to do it the flash drive way. Also im confused about transfering the OS, would i need a new activation key? would it still work like an original copy? how does that work? The laptop was over 1000 dollars so i cannot mess up with the installation and i dont want to do any function i dont have to. I know a bit about computers but nothing about ssd this is a new experience for me....
One more thing...where do i get the recovery program from i was told i could get it for free? i already spent way too much on the laptop and the SSD so it would be great if it was, or at least cheap. Here are the specs...
    • Windows 8.1 64
    • 4th generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4700MQ Processor
    • NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) 840M Graphics with 2048MB of dedicated video memory
    • 15.6-inch diagonal Full HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1920x1080)
    • 16GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 1TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
    • NO mSSD Hard Drive Acceleration Cache
    • No Additional Office Software
    • Security Software Trial
    • 50% off Computrace LoJack for Laptops, One Year($20 Savings)
    • 6-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery
    • External Tray Super Multi 8X DVD+/-RW w/Double Layer
    • Backlit Keyboard
    • HP TrueVision HD Webcam w/ integrated digital mic
    • 802.11b/g/n 2x2 WLAN and Bluetooth(R) [2x2]

First, back to the HP Recovery Media... you said you don't have a CD/DVD drive, but your specs list an "External Tray Super Multi 8X DVD+/-RW w/Double Layer." If you actually have this external CD/DVD drive, you can create an HP Recovery Disc set. So, the very first thing to do is create your HP Recovery Media... either DVDs or USB Flash Drive.
Next, if by "transfer"... you mean "move the current Windows 8.1 OS to the new SSD", then cloning is the way to go. You could also try using your HP Recovery Media to load the factory OS onto the SSD, but this tends to fail due to the large difference in size between the factory HDD and many SSDs. You should not need a new Windows 8.1 product key, because the key is encrypted and stored in the computer's BIOS. This is referred to as a DPK (digital product key).
    Lastly, if you dislike Windows 8 / 8.1 and you intend to install Windows 7... go ahead and install Windows 7. Be aware that this may not be as easy as it sounds but it is not impossible. Please use the following instructional guide;
    ****Disclaimer*****
HP doesn't recommend the installation of Windows 7 on a consumer computer shipped with Windows 8, nor will it support the installation of Windows 7. HP may not provide Windows 7 drivers and suitable drivers may not be available for the hardware in the computer. Also, Windows 7 may not support some of the hardware or software features designed for the computer.
Make sure you create your HP Recovery Discs or USB Flash Recovery media before modifying or changing ANYTHING.
    You will need to DISABLE "Secure Boot" and maybe ENABLE "Legacy Support" in the "BIOS Secure Boot configuration" on the settings page shown below, before you can attempt to install Windows 7;
    or
Additionally, as the hard drive may be partitioned as GPT, you may have to boot the computer using the "UEFI - CD/DVD drive" or "UEFI - USB Flash drive" options in the "F9" boot menu. If "UEFI - CD/DVD drive",  "UEFI - USB Flash drive" or something to that effect doesn't exist in the boot menu, please post a screen shot and/or descibe the listed boot options.
I suggest using Windows 7 SP1 for the best intallation experience. If you need Windows SP1, please see "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" to download and create your own Windows 7 SP1 disc. If the DVD refuses to boot as UEFI, you may need to use a USB Flash drive (may require DISABLING "Fast Boot" in the BIOS) as the installation media. Please download the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool to create a Windows 7 SP1 USB Flash drive. Please note that some computers may not recognize a valid UEFI enabled USB Flash drive if it is formated as NTFS and may require a FAT32 formatted USB Flash drive. You should be able to make a FAT32 formatted Windows 7 installation USB Flash drive using Rufus, UNetbootin, Universal USB Installer, or WiNToBootic. I like Rufus, as it has options for "GPT partition scheme for UEFI computer" and "FAT32".
    Most (the only issue may be WiFi network drivers) of Windows 7 drivers from the HP ENVY 15t-j100 Quad Edition CTO Notebook PC Drivers page should work on your computer. If you still have missing or unknown devices after installing the drivers, please post the Windows Device Manager's "Hardware Ids" (just the string of text will do) for those devices as shown in the example below;
