New to the wonderful world of mac and need help
I am using a powermac G4 quicksilver with a 933 MHz processor 768 mb of ram and I'm running OSX 10.5.7 the problem I am having is that when I go online to play simple flash games they run incredibly slow. I got this mac from a friends father and don't know much about macs, is this a memory problem, a video card problem or a processor problem? I was a Pc user for years so the few things I have tried like putting a different video card probably not compatible in it, new memory probably not compatible in it and i can't find much info on this particular mac, please help!
Hi! Download MACTRACKER to learn more about various Mac models. The database has good info. You can put 3 -512 mb sticks in it for a total of 1.5gigs of ram fairly easily. 933 mhz isn't real fast and it would probably be faster running Tiger instead of Leo. Also make sure you have 10-20 gigs of free hard drive space because anything less will slow it to a crawl. Tom

New to MACs and need help with a built-in video camera in MACBOOK
My mother and father just purchased a new MACBOOK a few weeks ago. They reside in Florida and we live in Indiana. We have a wireless camera that is connected to our wireless router. We call my parents and talk to them while we are on camera so they can see their grandchild.
I just found out their new MACBOOK had a built-in camera and I'm wondering how we can set that up so we can see them at the same time? Our child would love to be able to see his grandparents while we talk to them.
Our wireless camera has a built-in server and runs to a specific spot on our website so they can access it. But I don't know how the MAC works or what to do to tell them to set up the computer so we can see them.
Can someone direct me to some instructions on what I can do or give me some direction? I would really appreciate it.

JohnI use a Dell Dimension for my computer. I do not use Skype at all. The wireless camera we have on our home network is a Dlink 900. It does not have any sound capabilities so we were not too worried about being able to have a true "video conference" with their laptop. We jsut wanted to be able to see them. I don't know if that video image can be sent to a webpage (like our d-link camera does) or not. Or, maybe there is a much easier way of doing this that I'm not aware of.

New to Macs and need help with communication error in video chat
Hello! I have the same problem with video chatting that many others are having with errors -7 and -8. I am brand new to macs, and while I understand what the other threads are talking about about changing ports and settings, I don't exactly know how to do those things on my new system (iMac with OS X tiger 10.4.8). My quicktime settings are set to 1.5 and my iChat port is changed to 443. I have been able to connect with one person via iChat video on a different network, but I was given the above errors when I tried to connect with someone else tonight. I am using my built in airport with a Lynksys WRT54G broadband router. Please let me know how I can go about fixing this problem. Thank you!

I have been given a mac g5 old one and I can't connect my iPhone 4 and ipad3 to iTunes to be able to downLoad updates I have downloaded the version of iTunes but my mac won't allow it what can I do need help.

If you are trying to connect to your ISP e-mail account. The ISP will help you setup and connect to your e-mail account. So, you might want to give them a call.
Usually, when you are told that you can't use the server it means that there might be an error (either a wrong name/ address / password/ connection type/ etc.) so check your settings again...

I have received a "Data DVD" that was made on a windows machine and need to play it on my mac but am having trouble finding the right player or converter.I would like a free application if possible. Thank You,JerryStephen:-)
I think I understand now. The DVD has an auto start player (exe) that steps through the video's, html, whatever. Your gonna need windows or you'll be forced to look at the individual pieces seperately. Html's you can open, idx files are subtitles, the video format is avi I'm guessing or maybe wma.
Try this first, get the VLC player from video_lan. It's a great tool to have in your toolbox. It should play the video files at least (including subtitles). VLC can play almost any format. -
Switching over from pc to mac and need help!
Ok so I plan on getting the new imac they are revealing today, but I'm not completely sure how to transfer all my music over from the pc and how the iPhone will sync as I've heard that the mac didn't recognize the iPhone after it had already been synced with a pc. I was just going to buy an external hd for the music and other things, but I really don't want to spend $100 plus for something that is only for transfer and some backup. I was considering burning cd's as well as I only have about a 250 song library and many blank cd's. Which choice or other option would be best? As for the not recognizing problem, is there something I have to do to like "format" it for mac and a feature I need to set up on the mac? Any help is appreciated.

The iPhone will show up on both a Windows-based PC and a Mac without needing to be reformated. From the File Menu in iTunes you can choose to sync your purchased music back to the computer.
In addition the Apple Retail Stores offer a service to move your files over.
You can burn approximately 150-200 songs per CD as a Data CD in iTunes, and import from there if you would like. You can set the CD Burning preference in iTunes in Windows by going to the Edit Menu, Preferences, Advanced Tab, then the burning section. Choose the option for "Data CD"

Getting camcorder video on iTouch? I have a PC, not a Mac and need help
I am getting my wife the 32GB iTouch for XMAS and hope to be able to get some of our video footage of our 15 month old on her iTouch. The video was taken in AVCHD format (highest resolution) on my Canon HG10 camcorder. Video support for the camcorder is as follows:

I also have many JPEGs in 10 megapixel resolution taken with my Canon Powershot G7 camera.
Because i have a PC (Sony Vaio), will I be able to get the camcorder video and camera pics onto my wife's iTouch? I assume I may also need to downconvert the video resolution from the 1920 * 1080 HD high res fomrat. What software or conversion device will I need? Someone mentioned a free shareware converter called "Super" (just Google "super") which might help???

It really is pretty easy. The Ipod touch won't take the highest resolution, which is why it needs conversion. I also have an XP machine, and the easiest way to get home movies into iTunes is to pull them up from "my documents" and open the file, selecting iTunes or QuickTime as the player. Either option will open your itunes library and put the file there. My computer allways complains for a minute when I do this, but it settles down and does it just fine. When it starts to play, stop the video and it will be in "movies" in your iTunes library. Now you're ready to click on the advanced tab and convert. For converting high def video, be aware this may take awhile. It is worth it though-I love watching my home movies on the touch. Good luck! Let me know how it goes!

Yes. You should probably use Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5; note that Mac OS X 10.5 doesn't support Classic. If you're looking for other Mac OS 9 browsers, try iCab and Classilla.

Just wondering....and needing help
Hi,
just wondering, I started creating a new iWebsite from scratch, and now following things I wonder:
1. On my .Mac account, my page doesnt appear anymore as page
2. The Hit counter on my .Mac page is gone
3. The site is published directly now in the "Web" folder on my iDisk not anymore in the "iWeb" Folder
4. When trying to sync my iDisk, it doesn't sync the pages created and stored in the "Web" folder
I know, many questions, but help is really appreciated.

Are you sure about that? It should be in Web/Sites. iWeb 1 published in Web/Sites/iWeb.
Personally I think trying to sync iWeb between your real iDisk and a local copy just causes problems. I recommend people turn off syncing, trash the local copy, and work directly with .Mac.
Also I don't think the .Mac home page is reliable as any kind of catalog of your sites/pages and don't know of any way to fix its shortcomings. -
Recently purchased Mac and need help with iTunes
I recently purchased a Mac (I had Toshiba and used Windows) and went to add new songs to my iPod on my iPhone. I logged onto my iTunes account, but cannot figure out how to get my new songs that I downloaded onto my iphone. It keeps bringing up to replace my Library, which I figure will delete all the songs I already have. How can I get my iTunes Library on my account from my Toshiba to my Mac so I can add new songs?
The Apple Store will transfer everything from your pc to your new Mac, or you can call Apple support and they will help you move everything, or you can type "move itunes library from pc to mac" into the google search bar.

Over the weekend I added appointments to my iPad, then went to sync those changes to my iCal on my Mac and iPod. The calendars on my Mac and iPod were wiped clean. All the appointments I have on my iPad are there but I am unable to sync with the Mac or the iPod. Help,
Since there was no response I upgraded to Outlook 2010. All sync problems have been resolved now... but I have to learn a new version of Office.

I have a mid2009 MacBook Pro running Mavericks for which I have been using a USB WD HD for Time Machine. I'd like to get a wireless HD and start a new Time Machine backup for this Mac and retire the 5 year old WD drive. Can I start over?
no archive/ backup is perfect, HD clones can be set to make incremental additions, same as time machine however, though they are more time involved in doing so.
See the + and - of all data backup/ archives below and "spread it around".... or the "dont put your eggs all in one basket" philosophy.

Data Storage Platforms; their Drawbacks & Advantages
#1. Time Machine / Time Capsule
Drawbacks:
1. Time Machine is not bootable, if your internal drive fails, you cannot access files or boot from TM directly from the dead computer.
2. Time machine is controlled by complex software, and while you can delve into the TM backup database for specific file(s) extraction, this is not ideal or desirable.
3. Time machine can and does have the potential for many error codes in which data corruption can occur and your important backup files may not be saved correctly, at all, or even damaged. This extra link of failure in placing software between your data and its recovery is a point of risk and failure. A HD clone is not subject to these errors.
4. Time machine mirrors your internal HD, in which cases of data corruption, this corruption can immediately spread to the backup as the two are linked. TM is perpetually connected (or often) to your computer, and corruption spread to corruption, without isolation, which TM lacks (usually), migrating errors or corruption is either automatic or extremely easy to unwittingly do.
5. Time Machine does not keep endless copies of changed or deleted data, and you are often not notified when it deletes them; likewise you may accidently delete files off your computer and this accident is mirrored on TM.
6. Restoring from TM is quite time intensive.
7. TM is a backup and not a data archive, and therefore by definition a low-level security of vital/important data.
8. TM working premise is a “black box” backup of OS, APPS, settings, and vital data that nearly 100% of users never verify until an emergency hits or their computers internal SSD or HD that is corrupt or dead and this is an extremely bad working premise on vital data.
9. Given that data created and stored is growing exponentially, the fact that TM operates as a “store-it-all” backup nexus makes TM inherently incapable to easily backup massive amounts of data, nor is doing so a good idea.
10. TM working premise is a backup of a users system and active working data, and NOT massive amounts of static data, yet most users never take this into consideration, making TM a high-risk locus of data “bloat”.
11. In the case of Time Capsule, wifi data storage is a less than ideal premise given possible wireless data corruption.
12. TM like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
13. *Level-1 security of your vital data.
Advantages:
1. TM is very easy to use either in automatic mode or in 1-click backups.
2. TM is a perfect novice level simplex backup single-layer security save against internal HD failure or corruption.
3. TM can easily provide a seamless no-gap policy of active data that is often not easily capable in HD clones or HD archives (only if the user is lazy is making data saves).
#2. HD archives
Drawbacks:
1. Like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
2. Unless the user ritually copies working active data to HD external archives, then there is a time-gap of potential missing data; as such users must be proactive in archiving data that is being worked on or recently saved or created.
Advantages:
1. Fills the gap left in a week or 2-week-old HD clone, as an example.
2. Simplex no-software data storage that is isolated and autonomous from the computer (in most cases).
3. HD archives are the best idealized storage source for storing huge and multi-terabytes of data.
4. Best-idealized 1st platform redundancy for data protection.
5. *Perfect primary tier and level-2 security of your vital data.
#3. HD clones (see below for full advantages / drawbacks)
Drawbacks:
1. HD clones can be incrementally updated to hourly or daily, however this is time consuming and HD clones are, often, a week or more old, in which case data between today and the most fresh HD clone can and would be lost (however this gap is filled by use of HD archives listed above or by a TM backup).
2. Like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
Advantages:
1. HD clones are the best, quickest way to get back to 100% full operation in mere seconds.
2. Once a HD clone is created, the creation software (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) is no longer needed whatsoever, and unlike TM, which requires complex software for its operational transference of data, a HD clone is its own bootable entity.
3. HD clones are unconnected and isolated from recent corruption.
4. HD clones allow a “portable copy” of your computer that you can likewise connect to another same Mac and have all your APPS and data at hand, which is extremely useful.
5. Rather than, as many users do, thinking of a HD clone as a “complimentary backup” to the use of TM, a HD clone is superior to TM both in ease of returning to 100% quickly, and its autonomous nature; while each has its place, TM can and does fill the gap in, say, a 2 week old clone. As an analogy, the HD clone itself is the brick wall of protection, whereas TM can be thought of as the mortar, which will fill any cracks in data on a week, 2-week, or 1-month old HD clone.
6. Best-idealized 2nd platform redundancy for data protection, and 1st level for system restore of your computers internal HD. (Time machine being 2nd level for system restore of the computer’s internal HD).
7. *Level-2 security of your vital data.
HD cloning software options:
1. SuperDuper HD cloning software APP (free)
2. Carbon Copy Cloner APP (will copy the recovery partition as well)
3. Disk utility HD bootable clone.
#4. Online archives
Drawbacks:
1. Subject to server failure or due to non-payment of your hosting account, it can be suspended.
2. Subject, due to lack of security on your part, to being attacked and hacked/erased.
Advantages:
1. In case of house fire, etc. your data is safe.
2. In travels, and propagating files to friends and likewise, a mere link by email is all that is needed and no large media needs to be sent across the net.
3. Online archives are the perfect and best-idealized 3rd platform redundancy for data protection.
4. Supremely useful in data isolation from backups and local archives in being online and offsite for long-distance security in isolation.
5. *Level-1.5 security of your vital data.
#5. DVD professional archival media
Drawbacks:
1. DVD single-layer disks are limited to 4.7Gigabytes of data.
2. DVD media are, given rough handling, prone to scratches and light-degradation if not stored correctly.
Advantages:
1. Archival DVD professional blank media is rated for in excess of 100+ years.
2. DVD is not subject to mechanical breakdown.
3. DVD archival media is not subject to ferromagnetic degradation.
4. DVD archival media correctly sleeved and stored is currently a supreme storage method of archiving vital data.
5. DVD media is once written and therefore free of data corruption if the write is correct.
6. DVD media is the perfect ideal for “freezing” and isolating old copies of data for reference in case newer generations of data become corrupted and an older copy is needed to revert to.
7. Best-idealized 4th platform redundancy for data protection.
8. *Level-3 (highest) security of your vital data.

#6. Cloud based storage
