New to Using Time Machine, Should I Even Use It in This Case?

Hey everyone
So I just started a full Time Machine backup on my Macbook Pro to my Seagate 2TB External Hard drive. I make music, so I have a lot of projects and sounds, which I would like to have backed up just incase something happens to my Macbook. I have around 250GB of stuff on my computer, and it says that's it's going to take around 12 hours to back everything up. I'm new to using Time Machine, so I have a few questions:
Will this occur all the time if Time Machine is running? Like, will it keep updating the data I already have and replacing it, or will it just backup new changes/files after this first backup is complete? Is there an option/preference I can change so it only backs up new changes/files instead fully backing up every day?
Does Time Machine store the files/folders onto the external hard drive, or is it just like a backup file that you run which backs up everything?

You should not use a Time Machine backup drive for permanent data storage. Use a separate drive for that purpose. It's much safer. Time Machine will over time delete files if they are deleted from the source drive which makes Time Machine a poor long term storage option. If you want a permanent storage option buy a separate drive for that purpose, but do not use Time Machine. User other backup software:

The recent update in Yosemite (10.10.3) is causing some issues for some users.
Try a complete network power cycle as follows:
Power off each and every device on your network......modem, Time Capsule, computers, printers, etc......in any order that you want
Wait a minute
Power up the modem and let it run 2-3 minutes
Then, power up the next device that is connected to the modem an let it run a full minute
Then, continue to power up devices one at a time about a minute apart until everything is back up
Check the network
Wait for a backup to occur and report on your results

New Logic Board - Time Machine wants to create a new backup

This has me stumped. I just got a new hard drive and logic board from Apple. Plugged my external hard drive into my computer, turned time machine off and 'Entered Time Machine' to copy files over back to my computer. All worked as advertised.
Once I had some of my files copied over, I went to turn time machine on. Time Machine informed me that I didn't have enough space on my hard drive (it wants ~94 gigs free and it has 30 free, but it should have been able to delete the oldest backup, free up some space, and we should have moved on). At no point did it ask me if I wanted to reuse the backup or not.
I then wondered if it needed to get further along the backup process before prompting me to reuse the volume or not. So, I excluded like 98% of my hard drive and made the backup ~3 gigs. The backup happened, but now in my Backups.backupdb I have a MyComputer which contains all of my old time machine backups, and a MyComputer_2 which contains this last backup.
I trashed the MyComputer_2 folder and 'Entered Time Machine'. It pulled from the correct place and I saw my backups trailing back into history, but apparently I no longer have permission to view the desktop folder as well as the other 'protected' folders in my backed up home folder. I repaired permissions on the off chance that it would fix it, but it didn't.
Something is clearly broken, do the masses have any suggestions? I found multiple suggestions for how to deal with this under 10.5, but nothing about 10.6.

I don't know why you didn't get the "reuse" prompt, but that wouldn't prevent a new, full backup. You have a new internal HD. Even if it has the same name as the old one, Time Machine knows it's a different disk, so will back up everything on it. You cannot prevent that.
Your first problem is, you didn't transfer things onto the new drive properly (Apple Stores often give bad or misleading advice on that.)
And, you may have corrupted your backups by "trashing" the MyComputer_2 folder. Apple doesn't do a very good job of warning folks: +*never move, change, or delete anything in your backups+* via the Finder.
Try to repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If that works, your best bet is probably to do a full system restore, per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
You obviously had a problem with your Mac; depending on what happened and when, it's possible that damaged your installation of OSX and/or some of your data. If your last backup(s) were done after that started, the corruption may have been backed-up.
If that's a possibility, and you do the restore properly, but it fails, try it again, but select an earlier backup.

How do you install CS5 onto a new computer without Time Machine/file transfer

I'm not getting a new computer, but my current one is getting a little old (Macbook Pro V. 10.6.8) and I'm afraid it might crash if I download the newest Maverick system, which is why I want to make absolutely sure I'm able to save and transfer all my old files and CS5 Creative Suite programs if this indeed happens. I don't trust Time Machine to do it; my boss had this happen and Time Machine did not transfer the Adobe programs. I also don't want to rely on Time Machine and any other file transfer (which all new Macs offer) because I've had brand new computers crash because of old corrupt files from my old computer converting over, and the Apple people said it's a bad idea (which would have been nice to know BEFORE the computer crashed and everything. . .) I've been told you can only use the CD to install CS5 onto your computer twice, which I've already done (thanks to my brand new computer crashing once already). So I would like to know how it's possible to install the program onto a new computer should this one crash, without the use of file transfer or Time Machine. I have no interest in upgrading to CC.

Avoid using Time Machine for re-installing Adobe software. It rarely works and usually breaks the activation mechanism.

You can install the software as many times as you like but you can only activate the software for use on a maximum of two computers at the same time.
To re-install you will need your CS5 serial number.
Download the installer from Download CS5 products
Install then enter your serial number when prompted.

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.

I like to use the new TC in my office as a time machine on a Windows Server. Is this possible, and how do i configure this?
In fact my plan is to make the first back up by connecting to the server via an ethernet cable, but thereafter i like to bring the TC to my home and perform the incremental backups over the internet. This is for safety reasons, in case for example the office is broken into, or flooded, or fire (god forbid).
I sincerely hope it is possible, and not complicated.
Alternatively i would not mind replacing our current Windows server 2003 with an Apple server, but all computers in the network (except mine) are Windows 7 or 8. Would it work?

I will consider the WD My Cloud device.
It is a NAS.. it is designed to provide a cheap centralised file storage.

A file server like windows uses heaps of power to do very little.. in your setup.. In most setups like SBS it will do exchange server and provide a heap of useful connectivity to your clients.
Since you are not using the windows server in anything but simple file serving you can replace with a NAS..
Problem with the TC is, it is a router with a hard disk inside.. designed specifically for Time Machine.. it fails to provide what a NAS does.. easy access to any clients, local or remote.. TC is designed by apple for apple and the rest of world is not really invited to the party.
It provides no backup.. no data protection.. and is so specifically apple orientated I do not think it works at all well with windows.
For a simple example.. windows will have file issues with large files.. because it is only NTserver FAT32 to windows.. bad luck if you have large files.. !!
Plainly if you use active directory in windows that facility is gone.
I just like Apple products, find them more stable than Windows and easier to use. Plus i can access the server from home if it is an Apple Server.
If you only need remote access for yourself that is fine.. too bad for the windows clients I guess.
Or you open it up to the world and bad luck for security.
Apple do not design for mixed environment.. in fact with the TC there is no provision for windows access officially at all.. so anything you do is a fudge.
You can use the TC for your Mac backups within the network.. that is fine. Apple provide no software at all to help with your windows clients.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Yes, but it depends on the setup if you should or not.. not everything you can do you should do.
Are you connected by ethernet?
If you use wireless this can be super slow.. and also subject to corruption of the file.
You cannot use USB to connect.
If you are using a desktop computer, then an external drive is cheap, fast and reliable.
TM can also backup your work.
Using the TC as external drive.. Time Machine (TM) no longer has the ability to backup your work.. it can use TC as a target only.
How is the TC now setup? Did you want to setup in complete isolation to existing networking? If so how are you going to get network connection to internet etc. ??

Can I use a USB drive with the Airport extreme (not the new one) for Time Machine?

I thought I heard that using USB drive for Time Machine over wifi will work with the new, tall Airport Extreme, but not with the previous model, which I have. Anybody know for sure?

It is not recommended.. Apple says it doesn't work.. for some people it does for others it is unreliable.. do you really want unreliable backups.

Transferring to new iMac via time machine - how to use Ethernet?

Hi, I am setting up a new iMac and transferring my files from my MacBook (2007) using time machine. I started the transfer wirelessly (foolishly) but it predicted it would take 36 hours. With the transfer still happening I have now attached an Ethernet cable but the countdown is the same, presumably because the wireless transfer is still taking priority.
Is it risky to abandon the transfer midway through? If not, once I have stopped it, how do I ensure the ethernet takes priority, considering that I am still at the very early stages of iMac setup (so have not gone through to the normal home screen etc)?
Another issue is that the screen seems to sleep every 30 mins, so I am not sure the wireless transfer will keep progressing overnight...?

This Adobe page provides an app (LicenseRecovery 11.6.1), supposedly designed to reinstate a licensing issue. When I opened the file, and tried to open the app that's suggested on this page, the program hung. I assumed the app hadn't been updated for Mountain Lion.
Wouldthis app address the issue if it had worked?

I have just acquired a new MacBook which I want to set up completely fresh. The only data I really need to restore/copy to it, besides a few document folders, is the iTunes library from my existing iMac. The iTunes library has been backed up using time machine on the iMac (using a portable drive). I’ve heard it might be possible for me to plug the time machine backup into the new MacBook and then option-click the time machine icon in order to 'browse other backup disks' and then restore iTunes. Would this work and would all my devices still sync with iTunes? I’m just a bit nervous because apple has migration assistant and setup assistant for doing this sort of thing - I just really don’t want to use them because the only thing I want on my new MacBook from the whole of the time machine backup is literally the iTunes library. I don’t want to start restoring user accounts which you must do with the assistants.

Thank you ever so much for the replies. Just one thing: the link you provided seems to discuss restoring individual items on the computer for which a backup has been made. On my macbook I can't click "enter time machine" which I'm guessing is because the time machine backup is for my old iMac (hence my comment about control clicking the menu bar).
