NEW TO WEB PAGE DESIGN!

Hi guys,
I am brand new to web design - my webmaster designed my site
using Front Page Expres which I am told is rubbish. I have
downloaded the Dreamweaver trial version and have immediately found
that web change/design is beyond my capabilities. How should I
start as I really want to change my website to eflect my own
creativity and optimise on search engines?

FrameMaker 11 on "Start New, Linked Web Page" in HTML setup

FrameMaker 11 doesn't let me use certain paragraph tags to save certain FM files into separate HTML files. After I checked the box "Start New, Linked Web Page", that item has a Y in the Reference Pages for new web page, but it was being switched back to N during the process of Save As HTML, right in front me. It worked for some other Paragraph Tags, however. Would someone please tell what I missed? Thanks!!

That's ok. I had the work-around by using the paragraph tag that worked,
so it's working now, although I'm still puzzled about the other tag.

The copy and paste keyboard commands in the app are controlled by Flash Player, sometimes there are issues with a browser/OS combination, make sure that Flash Player is up to date and if that doesn't help try another web browser.

What's best "drag/drop" or template-based web page designer?

Without learning HTML, what would you suggest for the best drag & drop style web page designer/editor for setting up a fairly professional looking website that will be used for commerce, including shopping carts, etc.? There are many for Windows, what's the best one for Mac, hopefully free or shareware?

Well before you mentioned the whole commercial aspect of things, I still would have suggested iWeb. You might check out Sandvox or RapidWeaver, though I'm not sure that any of these will be particularly suited for commercial uses in terms of security and privacy.

How do I embed a photo gallery in my own web page design?

I have a photo gallery that I'm just starting, and I want to embed it into my existing design. I can't seem to figure out how to do that. I tried copying and pasting the frame and code, but it doesn't pull the images.

All that other site did was use a table layout and put the gallery within a table cell. The same effect could be done with a container div.

That's the only code you need to bring over from the first page to your page. Then just make sure paths are all set so that your other page can read the flash file and you should be good to go.

AP divs in design of web page

I've been studying some tutorials on designing with CSS -- I'm a newbie, using CS3. I had gotten into the habit of using AP divs to design my web page. I was warned last week that these can cause problems, especially when using features such as the Lightbox extension, so am trying to learn not to use those as much. The problem is, I've found the other methods of web-page layout don't offer the flexibilty of the AP Divs. I use many images, since I'm an artist, and more often than not I run into problems inserting images using the handy ready-made CSS layouts available and used in the tutorials. It's so easy just to draw divs here, draw divs there. Is there a tutorial or other informational guide to help with web page design where many images are used?

In simple terms, I think you're trying to reconcile desktop publishing (traditional page layout) with web design.
They're such completely different media that you'll continue to have trouble bridging the two until you understand more of how web pages work, especially learning HTML and CSS.
APDivs would be great for layout if everyone had the same screen size, resolution and browser viewport size.
Since you cannot predict any of the above, there's 95% chance that your APDivs will seem to be in the wrong place on the page (compared to your intended design) when your visitors view it - even though the APDivs are technically in exactly the correct spot according to the code on every screen.
What to do?
There's no substitute for learning HTML and CSS.

Absolute positioning is just one member of a family of positioning methods in CSS.
Unfortunately, as a tool, its resemblance to traditional page layout - which so many people can relate to - means it gets much misunderstood and maligned when, if used correctly, it can be useful - but not for page layout.
Use what you learn to design pages which will work on any device and browser.

Fireworks or Indesign for web page layout?

Hi, I've currently ordered CS3 Web Premium and it won't ship
until tomarrow, and I don't know whether I should cancel it and get
the Design Premium instead.
It all depends on whether Fireworks is a must have for web
page design. Does it offer anything invaluable that I need that
Photoshop Cs3 won't already fill? I saw the tour for InDesign and
was impressed how you can create amazing page layouts and how you
can export them to XHTML.
I probably won't be using Adobe Contribute as I prefer making
my own WYSIWYG editor in asp.net for my webpages, because I don't
want to buy a new license of Contribute for every web page I make
for a different client, so the choice of whether I should leave Web
Premium and get Design Premium rest on whether Fireworks is more
useful for webpage design and whether creating web page layouts
with InDesign is worth paying the extra money for (I don't mind
using it to create computer software manuals as well).
I appreciate any input on this matter. :)

Chat Support web page not working

Can anybody tell me when it is expected that the chat support page for smart storage / small business warranty support will be fixed.
https://supportforums.cisco.com/community/netpro/small-business/sbproductwarranty It broke about 2 - 3 weeks ago and whilst I am being told that it does operate if you have Firefox or Chrome Internet Explorer 9 is not supported! The second drop down list is non functioning.
I find this unbelievable. I thought that IE was the most used browser (I appreciate some people do not like it) and the fact that Cisco have not accommodated this product when supposedly designing their support web pages worries me, as I use IE and have just purchased some Cisco hardware / software.

Thank you for your reply. But I think the issue is related to software, as I feel that the web page support provided by Cisco, is part of the overall package which I purchased. In unrelated areas I have also had to turn on compatibility view in IE9 to gain correct access to elements of the hardware of my CISCO product, therefore the hardware has also been indirectly affected.
Surely the new support web page was tested prior to going live? cant you put the old page back until you sort this out? I appreciate these are simplistic statements but you can see my point of view.
My original question is how long will it take to put right the defect in the support web pages?.

IOS 5 bug: Cannot zoom some web pages

After the upgrade to iOS5, I cannot pinch zoom web pages designed for mobile devices any more. Normal HTML pages still work.
This bug was present in iOS 3.1.2, but was gone by iOS 4. Now it is back.
Please fix this, as it is an accessibility issue.

As a workaround, does the attachment from this thread help?
It starts the native platform-browser and allows you to go for any URL you like.

Serious bug in Smart Web Page feature

I've lost an hour's work on a problem in Aperture 2, cannot solve it, and hope somebody here has seen the problem and can give me a workaround.
In Aperture 2, I tagged approx 400 images with 2 keywords: "JV, varsity", then created a smart web page that selects all with keywords "JV, WEB". So far so good.
But I made a mistake -- 150 of those images should have not had the "JV" keyword. So I select one of them, Lift, remove the JV keyword, then select all and stamp with the "REPLACE" option rather than "ADD". Those 150 images now show only "WEB" as a keyword. And now the problem:
When I look at the smart web page again, all 150 images still appear. NONE of them have the 2nd keyword (JV) that's clearly specified in the smart web page filter. There is no way to stop these images from appearing via the keyword filtering. They do not have the "JV" keyword but always show up when I filter on "JV" and "WEB".
Out of frustration, I delete the smart web page and try again. "Include only images with the keywords WEB and JV". All 150 images that do not belong there show up anyway. Looking at their metadata as I view the smart page, they still show a "JV" tag!!! But if I switch back to the project explorer and look at that very same image, there is no JV tag on it.
This is absolutely driving me insane. Anybody have an idea how to fix this bug?

Following up: It has gotten worse. I deleted the entire project, reimported it from a backup that did not have any keywords assigned to any image in the project, tagged one photo "JV, WEB" and another "varsity, WEB".
Creating a new smart web page to show images having both "varsity, WEB" -- the smart web page shows images that have no keywords at all.

Web Page Composer Questions

Hey again
Im new to web page composer so here are some questions that i cant seem to find a proper answer to:
1- Im using a Framework witch have two zones:
                 Header Component - Normal Iview
                 Content Area - witch changes depending on top level navigation node
                                      This area is mainly build with pages that have detail navigation and a iview to a WPC Page.
              My problem is: when i preview the iview's im using in content area i can see the WPC im supposed to see , but when i log in as a user that is supossed to have this framework and content as the only available , this iviews to the WPC content are not really showing. the tray is there but no content inside it.
              What could be the problem?
2- Im used to have my Custom CSS / JavaScript in components but with wpc that wont be the case anymore as we want people to change content if they want too. is there a way to load CSS's without a "invisible css provider component" ?

An entry point provider makes one or more folders available as links that you can access from a central point.

In this context as soon as you create an entry point, you can upload site specific/ global content and images or documents into these folders

Why are my web pages so small?

I've noticed when using my iPhone (3G) that some web pages, when double-clicked, briefly flicker, like they're trying to expand, but then they return quickly to their original mini size. Other web pages, when double-clicked expand to a larger more readable size. Why is this happening? Is this a web page design issue or is it inherent in the iPhone?

Not always. I've come across a few that don't resize. It's not common but it does happen.

Can't get javascript to change movie playing in web page

I'm very new to web page development and scripting, so please bear with me. This is a test page I'm trying to get to work. Eventually there will be several images of different videos, and I want the different videos to play in one player, depending on which one is clicked on. This is the page: I have tried this on both Windows 7 Home Premium at home and Windows XP Professional SP 3 at work. All the links work except the crucial one, which is supposed to change the movie. I would appreciate any help you can give, and can supply any other information that will be helpful. Thanks!

Insert .oam files that scale without leaving white space below them inside a web page

Hi All,
Does anyone have a way to get .oam files to scale inside a web page without leaving all the white space below them when they are scaled in a fluid web page design?
I've done this in other web pages without using .oam files and inserting the whole html file and stage, but I need this to work with multiple areas inside a web page for which .oam files seem to be the only solution.

Thanks for your reply, the blog tutorial you're referencing however uses the HTML files and doesn't use .oam files, which is my problem, as I need to insert more than one edge element on the page.
Alternatively if there is a way to insert two "stage" HTML edge elements into a page using the method referenced above, this would be a suitable solution also. I've tried inserting more than one HTML file / stage where they are of different stage sizes and had no luck creating a second "stage_02" etc to acheive this so far.

Hi Nitin.
At first, I suggest checking for a documentation regarding a configuration has made for WPC repository and components, because logically it seams that in your company scenario Cross-site content folder intended for storing only image files.
At second, check configuration parameters of web resources for an Article and Banner forms. In standard configuration of both resources the parameter Allowed RIDs contains /wpccontent/Cross-site Content/** (refer to the [help.sap.com|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70ehp1/helpdata/EN/45/fef92d98f13830e10000000a11466f/frameset.htm]).
