NEW TO WEBSITE DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE

Hi. I run my own business and got a friend of a friend to design a website for me. The problem was that when I wanted it updated I was paying £50 each time. I have decided to try and learn how to update the website myself but feel as if I have bitten off more than I can chew. The designer used dreamweaver and he has given me all the information I need to log in to edit the website. What I need to know is this.....is it possible for someone who has never done anything in web design to learn to change text and images on a website and if yes can all of this be done on dreamweaver? I went on to one of these just answer sites and was advised to download  FTP and HMTL editor. Do I need to do this as well as dreamweaver? Sorry for all of the questions.

Adding content management, as Nancy suggested as one possible option, can be very costly, although it is the easiet way for non-technical people to maintain a website. Normally content management isn't added after the fact.
Your situation is similar to that of a client of mine. He had a website created by someone who did a nice job, and the client attempted to maintain it in dreamweaver afterwards. For the most part this went OK. The client was able to change names and photos of his staff as they came and went. He was able to update his product offering and so forth. But sometimes, because he had little grasp of HTML and CSS, he made a little mess here and there, so that eventually the site didn't look very nice.
Your site is very simple (that's not a bad thing) so self-maintenance probably would not be overwhelming. Download the trial version of Dreamweaver, spend a few days with a beginning Dreamweaver book, and see if yo still want to go down that road.
It sounds like the designer is willing to cooperate with you, so maybe you can dive in and maintain it in Dreamweaver, calling on the designer for help on an as needed basis.

  • New to website design and iWeb.

I work in a pediatric clinic and am creating a website for patients to access information in iWeb v3.0.4.  I created a Patient Forms page and have several documents available in .pdf format.  I want patients to be able to print forms before coming into the office.  I setup a link to each of the files on the page and if clicked, takes the vistor away from the page to the .pdf file.  The visitor must hit the 'Back' button to return to my site.
Is there a way in iWeb for the .pdf to be displayed without leaving the Patient Forms page?

When you setup the link in the Inspector/Link/Hyperlink pane check the "Open link in new window" checkbox.
Or if you compress/zip the pdf file and link to the zipped version clicking on the hyperlink will automatically download the file rather than open it in a browser window.  This demo page has example links: LinkTestPage

  • My Website Design and Pages in the iWeb Application has all Disappeared?

    Hello,
Last time I uploaded to my website I pressed save as always. Now when I open iWeb (Version 1.1.2) my design and the web pages I created are all gone and it asks me to choose a template as if this is the first time I have used the Application iWeb.
My website is still on-line. How can I correct this? Does it have something to do with the MobileMe fiasco?
    Thanks Rock

    RockSavage wrote:

Rock ~ Perhaps. To use MobileMe, the version of OS X you indicate you are using (10.4.10) needs to be upgraded to 10.4.11. See this _.Mac to MobileMe transition FAQ_. ...Run +Software Update+ and you may also get an iWeb update.
It sounds like iWeb cannot find its Domain file, normally located in the +~/Library/Application Support/iWeb+ folder. Have you moved it, or made any major changes to your Mac?
If you've been prudently making backup copies of iWeb's domain file as described HERE, you could try double-clicking on that backup copy and see if it opens up the last backup version of your sites.
"iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). If you no longer have this file, you can view your currently published pages and manually recreate them within iWeb, but there is no way to import published pages back into iWeb. You can manually back up the Domain file, or use Backup to back it up."

By owning Illusion Mage you can be in good company with idiots.
There is a reason why Illusion Mage does not appear on that Wikipedia article.
Illusion Mage is the free (GPL) Blender 3D, 'repackaged' and sold to clueless people.
The seller of Illusion Mage has done a good job of keyword spamming Google with articles that look like they are questioning Illusion Mage as a scam. But if you click on those articles, you see bogus glowing reviews that lead to the Illusion Mage web site.
Here are links to truthful information and reviews about Illusion Mage. Illusion Mage is a scam.
3DMagix and IllusionMage, scam or open source leeches?
Illusion Mage & 3D Magix Pro *is* a scam
    3DMagix, 3DMagixPro, IllusionMage, scam
    From Blender Nation
Illusion Mage is not "used by animation studios worldwide" because animation studios would not be so stupid to purchase software that is already free.
Terry, I would report your post to the moderators to remove as spam but the Adobe forums are ranked highly on search engines. It may have been your worst mistake to mention Illusion Mage here. You've just given yourself and Ilusion Mage some bad internet publicity.

  • New verizon website design

The new design of the Verizon website is very bad.  It lost the submenus like TV listings.  You now have to drill down with several clicks to get to the grid with TV listings for your Favorite channels.  The background is now horrible - black - can hardly read and hard to know where to scroll.  The "new" indicator is gone for shows.
It still prompts me to add a mobile number when ever I launch the website (does an auto login).  Can't get rid of that.
    VERY bad decision, Verizon.

Bye bye to My Verizon website.  I may return to record a tv show.  I've now set-up tv.com to use for tv listings, also with my favorites.
Your TV listings was ruined by changes today.  Really bad color black and can't read well, missing "new" indicator, have to drill down several layers to get to grid of listings.  Not good.  And that nasty pop-up everytime I go to My Verizon (auto logon) that keeps asking for my mobile number, happens no matter what I do to it.

  • Very New to Graphic Design and Printing

Hi - I have recently gotten into graphic design for print...invitations, etc, and I purchased an Epson R1900 for my studio.  This is my first printer purchase and I am also very new to CS5 (self-teaching over the last 2-3 months).  So, you can only imagine my printer frustrations...first I had color management issues (still do, but much closer than before due to online research) and now I am trying to load custom paper and print from Illustrator (also using Mac with OSX 10.5.8).  I keep getting a message saying "The source selected in the printer driver is not appropriate for the paper that is loaded in the printer."  What is going on?  I can't have printer issues every time I go to print something!!!  Please help me!

In your Applications folder there should be an Epson Printer Utility. You need to change to the custom size there at the driver level and then again in your print dialog when printing the file.
Many problems with Epson Printer Drivers. In my case I could never get the printer utility to show up on my Mac (even after updating drivers, resetting my printers, troubleshooting with Epson, etc). I finally gave up and started using my PC to print to this printer, so I could change to custom size and roll fed.
    Good luck.

  • I have a question about flash website design and google indexing!

first off i want to say I hate HTML (call it HTM HELL) I love Flash.Im a big propononent of flash.OK about a month ago I built a 100% flash site, told google to crawl it,then come to find out they cant see any text inside images. So I did what i didnt want to do,I took all my hard work down and had to work even harder and created a fully 100% HTM hell site.and just under 4 weeks later google still has my flash site in its cache.the question im trying to get at is if google cant read 100% flash sites whats the point in creating flash sites(mine's a business site.)I want to get into creating flash sites for other people too but if google cant read them how would a person be able to do a search for say what i do:pc repair in google & then my flash site would come up in googles search results. This is potentially costing me lots of money.I dont like "coding" HTML i want to design in flash.HEEEeeelllppp!

Google can crawl Flash, though I'm not sure how well, but either way nothing can read text that is not text - ie an image. The workaround - and still relevant for all other search engines, is to put all your content inside the div tag that your Flash is written into. The alternate content that one would see if they didn't have Flash, or didn't have JavaScript enabled.
There is a good tutorial on SEO with Flash on the SWFObject site: http://blog.deconcept.com/2006/03/13/modern-approach-flash-seo/
You can also just Google 'Flash SEO' and get a good deal of info.

  • Website design and Forum layout.

It really needs to be re-designed. It's similar to the early days when people used free sites that made everything look like myspace. Two friends of mine own an amazing PHP/SQL/HTML web design company and will knock the pants off of whoever made this. Have a look at Insipred Development.
    Just a thought.

I'd like to make sure I understand your problem - your scroll bar is on the right, welcome, my posts etc are on the right as well. You are objecting to having to click to open posts on the left?
There are a couple of things you can do - increase the speed of your cursor or get a trackball and flick the cursor quickly.
Or you could compress the window so that left and right are closer together, I think if you try hard, you can probably get the window to be about an inch or so, although it would be a tad difficult to read.
Alternatively, you could read Discussions on your iPhone, where the distances would be minimal.
Hopefully one or another of my suggestions will prove helpful,

    >For the record, the word "manufacture" definitely doesn't
    mean "someone who
    >creates a product"; it has a much more specific
    definition: "The process of

We're going to have to disagree on the definition of
    manufacture.
There are more meanings to the word. In its simplest form, it
    merely
    means to make.
    Dictionary.com:
    2. the making or producing of anything; generation
    5. to work up (material) into form for use
    American Heritage Dictionary:
    1. a. To make or process (a raw material) into a finished
    product,
especially by means of a large-scale industrial operation.
    2. To create, produce, or turn out in a mechanical manner
    Online Etymology Dictionary:
    something made by hand
    WordNet:
    1. the organized action of making of goods and services for
    sale
    Kenerman English Multilingual Dictionary:
to make, originally by hand but now usually by machinery and
    in large
    quantities
My point is that there ARE firms who are absolutely mass
    producing
websites. These are the folks who offer the "one from column
    A, one
from column B" sites, sometimes Flash and sometimes HTML.
    Minimal
labour, minimal customization - and these sites are most
    definitely
    marketed and priced as commodities.
It all comes down to what the business does and how it is
    marketed. Do
you make and sell a product: a website? Or do you sell a
    service?
My company sells a service. From all appearances, yours sells
    websites.
Not sure how we got on this track from what the office looks
    like.

  • Who to contact Toshiba regarding design and engineering ideas

    Hello,
I would like to contact toshiba to open a business talk about new ideas on design and function of laptop computers.
I have drawings and renderings of these ideas.
Can anybody direct me to the right direction?
    Thank you.
If you prefer please write me directly: [email protected]

Hello and welcome to this Toshiba community.
It is really nice to have someone here with new ideas and Im really surprised you want to share it with Toshiba.
Is this some kind of top secret stuff? I mean it will be nice to hear what kind of ideas do you have.
For instance I would like to have 18 notebook with two displays placed one behind the other and option to pull one to left and other to right side and use both of them will be nice thing, especially when I use it for my work. Working on two 18 displays but on mobile unit will be simply great thing.
Anyway, it is not easy to give you concrete advice who is the right person for first contact but I know, for example, that marketing division can be contacted in Neuss, Germany. Maybe is this the right address for first contact.
Check a little bit Toshiba Europe support page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com
Maybe you will find something useful there.
    Bye

  • New website design apps

What are some of the new website design apps that current iWeb users are going to?

Ethmoid is right.  But after MMe is discontinued iWeb will has some problems but can be fixed as described below:
It's now confirmed that iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
In addition the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on.
HOWEVER, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still currently available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those copies still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD.
This may also be of some help to you: Life After MobileMe.

  • I deactivated my student edition of CS6 Design and Web Premium, go to activate it on my new computer and serial code is invalid.

I downloaded the design and web premium, and entered a serial code to start it as the full version. However, after the install, it asked me for my serial code again. I entered it, and it didn't work. I tried registering my serial code on the adobe site, and it says it's invalid. My school gave it to me last year and it worked fine on my old computer. In that time, creative cloud came out and trials stopped being available as they were before. How I got it before was installing the trial, then activating it with my code. I have a PC and am running windows 7. My laptop is old and really just not up for the games I play or designing anymore, so I built a desktop. Successfully deactivated it, why can't I get it on my new computer? I am able to open the software as a trial, but I want to activate it. The error message I get in-program is "this serial number is not valid for adobe indesign/photoshop/illustrator CC 2014." Any suggestions?

if you're being asked for two serial numbers, you're probably using an upgrade serial number at the first prompt and the second prompt is probably for the serial number of a previous version.
otherwise, Error "The serial number is not valid for this product" | Creative Suite
