New ultra sparc 20 x86 ethernet

What is the adaptor? I can configure any of "many" types, I just don't know which one to choise. Help!

  • I am having trouble with my Mac Mini's ethernet connection.   Defining a new network interface shows no ethernet adaptor.  Reloading SL from DVD repaired.  But SL update lost ethernet again.  Will Lion Fix?

I am having trouble with my mac mini ethernet.  It had been working for weeks after an update to SL 10.6.8.
Once it went out and i repaired it by defining a new connection from System Preferences ->Network->(left panel service, +).
But yesterday, after a power up.  my ethernet was not working again. I tried this old trick to repair it, but the interface choices
listed for '+' a new service did not include Ethernet any more.  And the Utilities->System Profiler->Ethernet Cards shows
    no ethernet available.
As a last ditch effort i reloaded my original SL from DVD.  (I think it was version 10.6.4 but i could be mistaken on the version).
The ethernet worked!  But KeyNote wasn't going to work because apparently the version i purchased depends on 10.6.8.
So I upgraded again to SL 10.6.8 (Plus some other updates like AirPort which i don't use).
Now the Ethernet is not working again.  I see the same symptoms as before with the Ethernet seeming not installed.
Is this a problem seen by others?
Would going to Lion fix the problem?
Could AirPort actually be the culprit and not SL?
If i stay with my original SL, would i need to repurchase a version of KeyNote for the older version of SL?

    Have you reset the SMC?
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
While you're at it, resetting the PRAM won't hurt anything and 'might' help is SMC reset didn't work (PRAM does some port control):
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Something else you might try .... you don't say how you're updating to 10.6.8, however, if you're using Software Update, you might try downloading the 10.6.8 combo update, which contains all updates to 10.6. Sometimes, Software Update doesn't work quite right, and installing the combo update fixes that. Download the update from Apple's download site at http://support.apple.com/downloads/ , using Disk Utility repair permissions, apply the combo update, then repair permissions again.

  • Solaris 8 on Sparc and X86

Will I experience any problems connecting a Trusted Solaris 8 X86 systems to a SPARC Trusted 8 system? Will all the trusted features work between the two.
    Thx

I am using Java 5.0 to develop applets, but if I use
all the possibilities that 5.0 version offers (such
as enum) that means that clients viewing my applet
must have JRE 5.0 as well. Does that mean a very
    recent browser will be required?no.
I found which browsers support Java 5.0 on the page
J2SE 5.0 "Supported System Configurations" at
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/system-configurations.h
    tml
In short, what I take from there is that browsers
    required would be:
    - Mozilla 1.4+
    - Internet Explorer 5.5 (SP2+), 6.x on Windows
    platforms
    - Netscape 4.7.x on Solaris 8 on SPARC and x86
    - Netscape 7 and 7.1 are not offically supported, but
    should work
I have no idea how recent these versions are and
whether it is acceptable to assume that web visitors
will have these versions. I'd think it is almost safe to assume people have those, they're not that young. the question is rather "do they have the JRE 1.5.0?"

Oracle Instant Client was a "feature" introduced with Oracle 10g. There is no 9i version.
Code that links with Oracle 9i libraries should be able to be linked with Instant Client 10gR2.
The resulting application will be able to connect to databases from Oracle 8.1 onwards.

  • Cache block size in Sun Ultra Sparc IIIi

What is the cache block size in Sun Ultra Sparc IIIi processor? The data sheet states that there is a Jbus with 128b bandwidth. Is this the cache block size? is the b in 128b for bits or bytes?

I would say the this figure is bits, sun usually describe bandwidth in bytes as MB/s or similar. Check the document again, I seem to remember the US IIIi and JBUS architecture being described pretty clear in the data sheet. I'll see if I can come up with more from the product JTF.

If the program settings are set to hidden, it should be hidden. You do not need to specify any client settings. If you changed the program settings and the machines already had policy, you will have to wait up to your 60 minute policy setting or just manually
kick off a policy update to see the new hidden program.
If they are still getting the interactive install, then you need to troubleshoot if the machine has gotten proper policy. Run a 'Machine policy retrieval and evaluation cycle' manually, wait a few minutes and then test again.
Suppress program notifications are the tray icons and bubble notifications about installations happening. Hidden is the method in which the executable/msi will install.

  • My Airport Extreme and iMac appear to have the same IP address as a result of installing a new ATT modem via direct ethernet connection. How can I reset the Airport IP without disturbing the iMac setting if the iMac can't reach the Airport?

My provider's (ATT) modem recently went bad and though I usually use an Airport Extreme connection to the modem I had to start up their new modem via a direct ethernet connection from my computer to the modem. In trying to restart my Airport to modem via ethernet connection I was told that my computer IP and Airport ID are the same and so now my computer will not connect to the Airport. How can I best get out of this situation?

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

You may be able to determine the process that is running by grepping the output of ps for "updatemanager" and kill it with kill or some similar means. Obviously "xkill" or it's ilk will also kill it, but none of this would meet my standard for "graceful".
As for determining what is the problem... one thing to try is starting Update Manager from the command line with /usr/bin/updatemanager -debug and capturing that output.
Similarly running smpatch analyze from the command line may reveal some useful infromation, as Update Manager uses smpatch under the hood.
Finally you can get some useful registration information from ccr
    /usr/lib/cc-ccr/bin/ccr
Using the option to get the cns.assetid parameter will indicate if the registration process stored an assetid for your system, and may help check for backend errors as well...
    /usr/lib/cc-ccr/bin/ccr -g cns.assetid

  • Is there a way to run Windows programs on an Ultra SPARC 64-Bit Solaris 10?

I know the answer is more than likely going to be no, but I just thought I would ask...
I have an Sparc Ultra-60 running Solaris 10 64-Bit sitting here that is a web / forum / ftp server, and I would like to run a Telnet BBS program on it that is a Windows x86 based software.
I know WINE will run on OpenSolaris, but I don't know and I have searched high and low on the internet for the answer, so I came to the experts! :)
    Have a great weekend.!

    Hello Charles,
I have an Sparc Ultra-60 running Solaris 10 64-Bit sitting here that is a web / forum / ftp server, and I would like to run a Telnet BBS program on it that is a Windows x86 based software.
you might be able to get one of these SunPCi add-in boards. These are boards with thieir own CPU, memory, sound circuty and graphics chip (shared memory), later ones with network port but no own mass storage (the disk is emulated by a file on the Solaris filesystem). A full copy of the supported Windows operating system (the last generation supported Windows XP) is required (the installer depends on the layout of the retail copy). Depending on the ages/version of the board the CPU range from AMD K5 300/400 MHz, Celeron 600/700 to AMD K6 with over 1 GHz.
Unfortunately the first 2 generations (SunPCi and SunPCi II/Pro) don't directly support Solaris 10 (a file from the SunWSPCi package had to be modified to get the software installed) and the last generation SunPCi III/Pro requires a patch to work in 2010. The SunWSPCi packages that came with the boards are outdated and Oracle removed the packages from the download center.
The documentation for these boards is still available on docs.sun.com (enter the following in google "SunPCi +site:docs.sun.com").

  • Sparc to x86 migration passwd file issues?

We're interested in migrating an old Sparc 2.7 system to x86.
Are there going to be any problems just copying the passwd and shadow files to the new system. Migration is easier if I don't have to force a couple thousand users to change passwords all at once.
    Tim Myers

It should be fine. If the x86 system will run something other than Solaris 7, make sure that there are not any differences in the entries the system creates.

  • Setting up a new Time Capsule - WAN or Ethernet quandry

Just got a new TC - I am hoping to have it host (or extend) my wireless network off a wired foundation that has a cable modem. I am struggling with which hard-wire port I can use to get it access to the internet. I try plugging the wire into the WAN port and the TC just disappears. I switch it to an Ethernet port and the Airport utility cries foul that I don't have anything in the WAN port! My Cable Modem is buried deep in the basement with a d-link WAN hub connected to it, sharing a wired network through the house. I was under the impression the TC would work (and talk to the internet) if you only hooked it to the rest of your wired network (using the Ethernet ports.) Is that not so? Does it need to be the go-between for your Cable Modem & Home wired network?

    Welcome to the discussions!
Since you have a router ahead of the Time Capsule, please check to make sure that you have your TC set for Bridge Mode as follows:
Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
At the bottom of the next page the setting for Connection Sharing should be set to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
In this setting, it does not really matter whether you have the ethernet cable from the router plugged into the WAN or LAN port as they all behave the same when the TC is in Bridge Mode.
You may need to restart your modem and router ahead of the TC and you should have internet.

  • Ultra 10 + Solaris 10, Ethernet adapter not displaying

Ok please bear with me as I'm a total newbie when it comes to sun hardware and solaris.
The ethernet adapter on my Ultra 10 doesn't show up in ifconfig -a and neither does it show up in the GUI tool. The only thing showing is the loopback lo0.
How can I assign an IP to my ethernet adapter? Is there some sort of command to start the interface? Maybe in the terminal before solaris boots or in solaris itself?

Hi guys I just wanna say thanks for all the excellent replies but I've managed to solve the problem. I didn't choose the correct networking options during installation and it seems thats what was causing it.
It took me so long to reply because I keep the box in college and its been the easter break here for the past 2 weeks and I've not actually had access to the machine.
I'm using it for my project where i have to set up a fully functioning network. the box is up and running XAMPP with Apache, MySQL, PHPMyAdmin and ProFTPd. I hope I can set up sendmail and squirrelmail in the same way I have done at home on my Fedora Linux virtual machine.

  • I have a new MBRP. On wired ethernet it can be used as a wireless hotspot. Since 802.11ac gets better range I'd like to use it with 802.11ac as a hotspot for my older 802.11g/ndevices. Can I do that ?

I know that if I use wired ethernet then the  MBRP can be a wirelss hotspot for other devices. Since the MBRP supports 802.11ac and I have a new 802.11ac wireless router it gets much better range than my older 802.11/n devices.  There are places in teh house where the MBRP connects to the wireless but where older 802.11g/n devices lare out of range. In those rooms I'd like to use my MBRP connected to the network wirelessly using 802.11ac as a hotspot for the nearby 802.11 g/n devices. Anyone know if that can be done and how to do it ?

Turn on Internet Sharing in Sharing preferences. Share the Ethernet connection to wireless.

  • Sparc  vs X86 Compatibility

I installed Solaris 10 to an x86 machine
I am trying to run some Solaris binaries (probably Solaris Sparc)
    it gives an error
    "invalid argument"
    question is:
Does not Solaris have binary compatibility? Can't a Sparc binary run on an X86?
    I am totally confused

What? I thought the whole point of Solaris x86 is that it can run Solaris binaries. So Solaris x86 is not Solaris?
Is it true that any binary compiled under Solaris on a sparc machine will not run under Solaris x86?
If true, I completely fail to see the real utility of Solaris x86, at least for my applications, which were all compiled on sparc machines.
