New Updater (2006-06-01) killed my iPod

I have a 40gig iPod (bought in dec of 2004), which has been rendered useless by the new updater. Whatever you do, DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE NEW UPDATER!!!

yes, we have many of these threads. why don't you try downgrading with an older update software?

If you have a 3G or 4G iPod, install iTunes 10.5.3 on the computer and connect the iPod to the computer and go to the Summary pane for the iPod in iTunes and click on update/chack for update.

  • New updater fouled my 60 gb video Ipod

Video plays (any of my videos) for about 20 secs then freezes, after about 15 seconds continues but with no audio. Have reset and restore, doesn't help. This started inmediately after using the new updater, anybody know a fix?

Actually I did not restore, I don't want to loose everything and start over again. I tried updating from the old version on my CD, everything loads ok but version 1.1 is still inside.
Is there positively no way around the 'restore' process?
Maybe I can forget watching videos untill Apple comes out with something good?
I hope whoever is responsible for the flawed update gets his you-know-what kicked...

  • IPOD Updater 1.1.1 Killed my IPOD

    Beware....
I updated my IPOD tonight, and when the update was complete my IPOD froze with the Apple logo on the screen. I waited a couple of minutes, but no change. I then rebooted my IPOD, and now, its dead. The backlight comes on, but there is nothing on the display.
    This is most dissapointing...
    Any advice anyone?

    Yes,
1.Reset your iPod, iPod nano, iPod mini, or iPod shuffle.
Did that, Ipod gives 3 beeps and return to white screen.
2.Retry your iPod with a different USB or FireWire port on your computer (please note that the latest iPods can only be synced through USB).
    Same.
3.Restart your computer, and make sure that you have the latest software updates installed.
    Same.
4.Reinstall your iPod and iTunes software. You can download the latest versions of iPod Updater and iTunes from our website.
The Updater/Windows does not see my Ipod.
5.Restore your iPod using the latest iPod Updater. Please note that restoring an iPod will erase all songs and files on your iPod and restore it back to its original settings. After restoring, you can transfer your music and files from your computer back to your iPod again.
The Updater (Windows does) does not see my Ipod.

  • IPod Updater 2006-06-28 killed 2GB Nano and a 30GB Video iPod

Both were bought in december 2005, I was impressed as they both have worked totally perfect until Monday, plugged fully charged hardley used 30GB Video into front USB on a G5 1.6, iTunes booted and a box appeared saying iPod needed update, so I clicked ok, it then said update was succesful. iPod rebooted, Mac an iTunes no longer recognised the iPod? so I did a reset, this sorted the problem and it seemed to work fine. My daughter then wanted to plug in her Nano, so she did, I unplugged the 30GB as it was fully charged and turned it off , plugged in the nano an thought it was ok to also update, the update worked fine and rebooted straight onto the desktop an also in iTunes, we left it to recharge fully before ejecting an turning off. I then plugged the 30GB back into USB, Mac/iTunes would not recognise again? Tried to complete the 5Rs managed the first 4 but as I could not mount the iPod, I could not Restore! Tried on Powerbook, nothing apart from no charge icon! but it would no longer charge and was totally flat without any use? plugged it in to wall charger for 3 hrs, would turn on but straight away said that the iPod needed charging? Then my daughter said she could not turn Nano on, this is now totally and completely dead? nothing at all happens even when plugged into wall socket? this is too much to be a coincidence, it must be the update that has somehow fried the batteries? they are both still under warrenty so I have ordered support online and Im waiting for my boxes, but I just would like to know if anyone else out there has had simular problems? or if anyone can shine any light or information about this? I have been a total Machead for 16 years but this has just cast a shadow on my experience! :-|

I too have had almost the identical problem. I did the update and the next time I plugged the Ipod in a lot of my library was missing and I received a corrupt database error message. I have tried everything conceivable to restore my Ipod video 30 GB but It keeps locking up. I occasionally will get it to boot up but it will only stay on for a maximum of about 3 minutes and then locks up. I have tried the 5R's and tried putting it in disk mode. I have tried the diagnostic mode which also locks up. Most of the time I get a message after resetting the ipod that I need to restore using iTunes and then it shuts off. The only way I can turn on the thing in the first place is by doing a reset. I think Apple has some explaining to do. I have seen quite a few posts of the same problem which seems to be attributed to the update. I suppose that I will be sending mine in for service. Probably would be a good idea to call customer service first, even though they probably will charge me for the call.

  • Updater 2006-01-10 crashed my iPods

The latest iPod updater simply crashed my iPod Shuffle. Now, it is not working with iTunes nor being recognized by Windows.
When I open "My computer", it shows a removeable device, but when I click it, windows does not recognizes the file system.
When I tried to use the update to restore my iPod, the updater also did not recognize it and showed the famous "Can't mount iPod".
It's very frustating... I have tried other things, like change the drive letter through windows to avoid conflicts with other devices, I have tried format it myselft, but still nothing works. I have also tried to use other computer that have never had iTunes and IPod Updater installed, but it also did not work.
As I could see here, a lot of people are facing similar problems with the infamous green/yellow blinking lights.. but nobody could solve it, which makes me believe that there is something wrong with the latest Apple update for iPod. I will try now use an older version.. hope it works.

i have the same blinking orange and green lights--ipod not playing songs--computer not recognizing my ipod problem!!! and if i have to take the this "best invention for music ever" back after only a month and a half of use i will be p-offed!!!!! I spent my hard earned money on this. and no apple people are helping with the situation. its pathetic. if i can even return the **** thing i'm going to use the money and get sirrus satellite radio. f- it.

  • I downloaded the new update ios7.0.6 on my ipod touch 5g and all is says on the screen is connect to itunes so i did and it told me to update and restore so i did but nothing happened all it says is waitung for ipod. I dont know how to fix it!!

    Help please!!!!

Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
       1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
       2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
                  * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
      3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
charge, and then start with step 2 again.
      4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
      5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
      6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Additional Information:
If you have a problem getting into recovery mode then try: RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode.
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

  • BEWARE of iPod Updater 2006-01-10

I just ran the iPod Updater 2006-01-10 on my iPod Photo and it erased the disk and made it unrecognisable to the OS. I then tried to run the iPod Updater 2006-01-10 on it and run restore, but it could not read the disk. So the iPod was DEAD. Luckily I had iPod Updater 2005-11-17 on my machine and it seems to be working.

In response to the thread I created 24 hours ago consolidating discussion of this issue, Apple has locked the thread, locked me out of my former user name, and deleted my attempts to continue the discussion on this board. I can no longer post to these forums with the name "L3263827"!
Apple seems to be dodging this issue, and I wanted users of the forums to be aware of their despicable behavior.
Many of my previous posts have been deleted. If I disappear again keep the discussions up! Apple will not address this issue unless it is demonstrated that the updater has caused problems on a "significant number of units". Apple's position seems to be that the updater is "working" on "millions of units" and therefore those of us with problems are insignificant or irrelevant.
After hours on tech support today they offered to repair my iPod without charge (as they should have offered from the beginning), or to send me a $100 coupon towards the purchase of a new unit (which I was apparently supposed to be honored to receive). I have had to address the lockout of my userID through different channels.
Attention users with old iPods that are now paperweights: Report the problem! If we don't report the problem and prove the pervasive nature of this issue Apple has repeatedly stated they will ignore it!
Check the old thread "Complete iPod Failure" ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=330396&tstart=0 ) See how many users reported problems between 4pm and 9am! Don't let Apple steal your iPod and sell it back to you!
I suggest users experiencing problems with iPod Updater 2006-01-10 now create new, individual "Me Too Updater 2006 - Username" threads with descriptions of their problems and models, rather than post to a single thread Apple can lock and ignore.

Has anyone else seen this? I note from the release notes:
    perl
    CVE-ID: CVE-2005-4217
Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9
Impact: Perl programs may fail to drop privileges
Description: When a perl program running as root attempts to switch to another user ID, the operation may fail without notification to the program. This may cause a program to continue to run with root privileges, assuming they have been dropped. This can cause security issues in third-party tools. This update addresses the issue by preventing such applications from continuing if the operation fails. This issue does not affect Mac OS X v10.4 or later systems. Credit to Jason Self for reporting this issue.
Any advice would be most appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Damon
    PowerMac G4-867   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The update prevents spamd to run as the default user "nobody". Running it as root seems to be the only workaround.

  • After runnin iPod Updater 2006-06-28 for my 2GB iPod Nano my computer froze

I installed iTunes 6.0.5 and my 2GB iPod Nano was recognized... everything seemed OK. I then tried running iPod Updater 2006-06-28 and this is when my problems began. After running the Updater program my iPod froze during the update process. I had to shutdown my computer in order to stop the updater program. Upon restarting my computer, iTunes no longer recognizes my iPod and if I run the updater program again it continues to freeze or does not recognize my iPod. When I plug in my iPod, Windows recognizes my iPod but my computer becomes very slow. Please note that when my iPod is not connected to my computer it appears to be OK but all my data has been removed. The updater program also appears to have been successful in updating my iPod to v1.2.
To try and resolve this issue I performed Apple's Five Rs and also followed Apples instructions for "iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes." Please see the links below for these procedures.

  • Any known problems with iPod Updater 2006-06-28?

I was wondering if anyone's had any issues with their iPods since updating with the iPod Updater 2006-06-28.
    Thanks!

I was a fool. I refrained from updating because I knew better than to try to fix something that isn't broken, but I was hungover and upset about the fact that whenever the headphones cord wiggles my ipod pauses. I was convinced for the split second in between two throbbing beats in my head that perhaps the new update would give me an option of shutting that aspect of the ipod off. Woe is me.
Now 10 gb of my music is unavailable. The ipod just skips over it. It didn't delete the files, they're all still there, I just can't play them; not on the ipod nor on the computer (not original computer for ipod). In Itunes an exclamation point shows up in the first column whenever I try to play certain songs, but there is no information about what is wrong. If I go to info on these songs there is no entry for Profile: Channel: or Encoded With:, unlike the rest of my songs that still work.
    Any hope of recovery?

  • IPod Updater 2006-06-28 breaks On-The-Go playlist.

After updating to version 1.2 and filling my nano full of podcasts I noticed this issue.
I can add the Podcasts to the On-The-Go playlist but when I play them it will only report "1 of 1" while playing it, and it will stop playing & return to the main screen after playing the first file.
I tested with regular audio files and it both reports the correct number of files in the playlist ie. "1 of 3" and plays them all.
I'll be downgrading to version 1.1.1 when I get home, as I don't envision I'll be getting the Nike stuff.

I know exactly what you mean. I had the exact same problem. When I purchased my ipod it came with an earlier software version 2006-03-whatever. I tied to update the software through the website, but when I did that itunes didn't recognize the ipod, or I could get the Nike+ to work, but then the ipod dumped all of my songs. I worked on this problem for 7 hours, going through each of the ipod support suggested fixes, to no avail. I Restared, Restored, everything. (Incidentally, I hate the fact that Apple doesn't give you the option to simply call a technician for assistance). Finally, I gave up. Luckily, I had just purchased my ipod from Circuit City only 4 days previously, so I had the right to return it to the store. When I did, I got a new Nano, which had the newer software (2006-06-28) included. I simply deleted my old software and installed the new one, and voila, no problems! Everything works perfectly and the Nike+ appears to be working flawlessly.

  • IPod Updater 2006-06-28 still says Don't Disconnect...

    Hello.
This evening I tried updating the firmware of my iPod. Everything seemed to go ok. When this was finished, their still was the "do not disconnect" message on the screen of my iPod.
I decided to try the restore button.
iPod Updater 2006-06-28 now says: restoring done, wait till it is really done, don't disconnect the iPod.
Now, this message is already on my screen for more than a hour. My question: is this ok and normal?
(perhaps I have to say that my iPod wasn't charged completeley.)
I hope someone knows something about this.

Ok, you see the thing is, I'm only 13 and I have like
no idea as to what I should do. and most of all, I
don't really have a clue as to what you just said.
I'm sorry if I'm bugging you, but I think what
you're saying is that if I remove itunes and i
reinstall it, all my songs will be there? This is
so confusing. You know what? Thanks for your help
    anyway. I appreciate it.
Okay Shorty1324, I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes i don't know how many times and my music files and folders have never been erased from my computer so you don't need to worry about that. However, if you do decide to uninstall iTunes again and think it may erase your music, try making a backup copy (not a CD) of your all music files and/or folders. meaning, make a totally new folder, save it somewhere on your hard drive or desktop where YOU know everything in it will not be harmed if iTunes decides to go ape (for lack of better words). if everything works according to plan, (meaning iTunes works without any problems) then your iTunes problem is solved. but keep the backup copy of your music in case something else goes wrong. hopefully this explanation helps you. i know it's hard to understand technical jargon but you will learn as you get older. no worries!

  • After updating to iOS 6 my iPod Touch 4th.Gen is virtually unusable ... does anyone know how to sue Apple since they gave no warning about iOS 6 being for iPad optimisation and a killer  for iPods ?

After updating to iOS 6 my iPod Touch 4th.Gen is virtually unusable ... does anyone know how to sue Apple since they gave no warning about iOS 6 being for iPad optimisation and a killer for iPods ?  Before I throw away my iPod Touch does anyone know if Apple intends to rectify their obnoxious disregard for iPod users by issuing another 'upgrade' which will allow iPods to work without the constant system crashes that iOS 6 has caused ?

Contact a lawyer if you want to sue.
    Otherwise try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Problem with iPod Updater 2006-08-28

    Hi,
It seems that there is a bug in this version of the iPod Updater. I didn't know where to post so I came here as this problem may be the related to the fact that I use it on my Nano 1Go.
When I restored my iPod, the iPod Updater created a void SysInfo file :s
So this was a problem to test stuff like iPodLinux.
I had to restore it with the precious version on the CD (2006-03-23) and then make an update with the 2006-08-28 to keep the SysInfo file.
    Is it normal ?
Could someone warn apple of this bug ?

I was a fool. I refrained from updating because I knew better than to try to fix something that isn't broken, but I was hungover and upset about the fact that whenever the headphones cord wiggles my ipod pauses.
