New USB Airport card

I'm probably the 1,000 person asking this question...please forgive me but I need an answer ASAP without alot of research. Has anyone tried using the new Airport type cards that just plug into a USB port? If so, do they really increase the range 3 to 5x? Do they work well with iBook G3 with Tiger OS?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No I personally didn't know much about them. I looked into this over a year ago as a solution for a CRT iMac and didn't find anything compatable. Now I hear of people buying cheapies off eBay with great results.
It would be a great solution if it works as promised especially with the problems that people have with some extreme cards. I've got a PowerBook G4 Mercury that has absolutely abysmal range from it's original setup. I was considering scabbing an large Yagi antenna on the top of the display.

When Apple first discontinued selling the original AirPort Card, they were selling for up to $200 on eBay.

I wouldn't want anything but an original AirPort card with my iBook G3. They have been so great that I just wouldn't think of trying anything else. I'd rather pay a little more and get something I know will work. No drivers to download and install. It's all right there. The first couple AirPort Cards I bought were about $100 from Apple. I've bought two used ones for $50 each.
I would want to buy one that had a 30-day warranty (at least), since I did have to replace one once (a very rare occurrence).
I am told that usually a used card is as good as new; they fail so infrequently.

  • Verizon Westell 327 Moden not capatible with new Intel AirPort card

After spending a lot of time with Verizon and Apple on the phone Verizon states that their modem/wireless is not compatible with the new Intels for a wireless connection. Apparently they have had a lot of phone calls and know what the problem is (software problem). So I've given up and was wondering if I purchased either the Airport Express or Airport Extreme and hard wired it up to my worthless Westell modem whether I could connect wirelessly that way.
    iMac 20" Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Welcome to Discussions, Michelle!
Check the bottom of the Westell for the model number to see if it needs a firmware update (it might not need one).
From what I can see, IF your Westell is one of the models that needs a firmware update, rather than trying to find a Mac version of the update, it would be quickest to use a windows computer to download the update and install it to the Westell. Firmware is an alteration to hardware only, and there is no interaction with software. None of the firmware update belongs on the iMac, nor on a windows computer either - after the installation to the Westell is completed the installer can be deleted from the computer.
You already know how to get the update from Dell, and it's also available from Verizon, and from Bell South as near as I can tell.
You could always demand from Verizon that they mail you a Mac-compatible firmware upgrade for the Westell (again, if it needs it) on a CD, but that might take longer than it's worth. Perhaps you could even demand a replacement wireless router that's up-to-date for Intel-based Macs.
From what I can see searching around just a bit about the issue, it appears that there can be several different issues involved in setting up the Westell with an Intel-based Mac. At least if you can determine whether yours is one that needs the firmware update or not, then you'll be that much closer to getting the iMac to work with it.

  • Any cheaper alternatives to the M7600LLE Airport Card?

    Hello,
We are trying to connect a Snow White G3 iBook, with a faulty ethernet card to the internet but can't afford the prices for a used or new original airport card. A friend mentioned that their are other companies which make USB devices which do the same thing. Is there a cheaper alternative which does the same thing as the M7600LLE card? The iBook is a model M6497 snow white iBook running OSX 1.2 I think. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Apple Airport Card versus alt USB Wireless

    Hello,
I own a Graphite IBOOK Clamshell G3 366mhz and I would like to give it to my nephew for 1st year university. It is not wireless - it has the Airport software. He needs wireless.
Should I purchase an Apple Airport Card alt USB Wireless G3 G4 G5 OSX.3 or 4 from Ebay @ $39.99. Someone at a store in town stated that they were not reliable.
    OR
Should I purchase NEW WIRELESS APPLE AIRPORT CARD - iBOOK iMAC G3 PB PM from Ebay @ $130.00
    and
will that be all I need - aside from upgrading the system to 10.3.
    Thank you for your help.

USB wireless adapters need drivers to work. I don't know if there are any for OS 9. Many people find that the drivers don't work well with OS X. Therefore many people who try USB wireless adapters give up on them.
The original AirPort card is the best solution.

  • I have an iMac G4 and need to connect it to the internet. Do I need to buy an airport card or can I just use a normal USB wifi stick?

I have an iMac G4 and need to connect it to the internet. Do I need to buy an airport card or can I just use a normal USB wifi stick?

Will this need to be a special mac compatible one or will they all be fine?
You need to see "works on Mac" on the box. All such deveices require a driver. The adaptor would work in many cases except for the lack of Mac drivers. Some companies have the proper Mac drivers on their web sites, some shuffle you off to suspect third-party sites, and some have no Mac drivers at all. If you want to buy one adaptor, not have to return it or send hours searcing the web for a driver that works, look at this one:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/MXP2802NU2C/
It is best for iMacs with USB 2.0 ports. If you have only USB 1.1 ports, you can save money with this one:

  • IPhone 4 not recognized when connected to new USB 2.0 card

I have an iphone 4 OS4.1 on a no-name Windows XP Pro (service pack 3) PC with an AMD processor and lots of RAM.
I had the phone working and syncing beautifully with the onboard USB 1.1 but it was slow. So I bought a new PCI USB 2.0 card and installed it. Card is installed and there are no problems according to the status in System Devices.
But the computer does not recognize the iphone when plugged into one of those ports. If I plug it into one of the USB 1.1 ports that are still in the machine, it syncs and works fine. If I plug it into one of the new USB 2.0 ports, the PC shows the window at bottom right saying the device is not recognized. Tried the wizard but it's useless.
    THOUGHTS?????

    Nevermind!!!
It turned out to be a faulty cable! I tried it with a different sync cable and it works fine!
    So disregard the question above.

  • Can I use a USB wireless adapter with my iMac G4 Flat Panel (it has no Airport card).

I have just salvaged an iMac G4 15-inch Flat Panel from the skip and now have it running Mac OS X Tiger 10,4. It has a 700mhz cpu, 80Gb hard drive and 512mb of Ram. No airport card is fitted so I was wondering if a USB wireless adapter could be used instead. I have a Belkin F5D8055ea USB wireless adapter fitted and the system recognises the device, this is as far as I have got as I am a complete novice on Apple/Mac machines. Anyone any ideas please?

If the device is recognised, see if you can located your wi-fi network using Airport Utility.

  • New Mac Mini doesn't recognize airport card

I have a new mac mini, leopard, 1.8G c2duo, and have finally resolved some display issues. Now it doesn't recognize my airport card. Ideas?

If the airport card doesn't appear in the System Profiler (select 'About this Mac' in the Apple menu, then click the 'more info' button, then click 'Airport Card' down the left hand side) then the mini likely has a hardware problem and would be in need of repair/replacement. On the other hand, if the Airport Card shows up there, the system clearly can see the card, but it then means there is likely a problem with MacOS or a setting - in which case if you could describe the symptom (ie, where it is you are not seeing the card) then it may be possible to resolve.

  • New iPod not loading on computer w/ new USB card... HELP!

My new 30g 5g is only about a month old. I've been hooking it up to my computer (PC) via the old USB (1) and it has worked fine. I just got a new external drive which pushed me into needing more USB slots so I got a new USB 2.0 card (Startech) and put that in my computer. The drive and everything else works fine through the card, however, my ipod won't work properly with it. The iPod used to load on My Computer as an ipod with its name and when opened would show the folders on the iPod. Now, it loads as a "removable disk" with nothing inside. And it won't load in iTunes at all.
If I connect it through the old USB slot it seems to work as normal. Also, anything else I connect with the new USB card works fine.
I've tried updating iTunes, restarting, tried all the different ports on the new card, took the card out and reinstalled...
I've avoided wiping my iPod so far, but I know that is one option. My iPod is basically brand new so I'm stumped. Any help is appreciated.
    PC   Windows XP

my only suggestion would be to format it thru windows (mycomputer, right click the ipod, format, quick format) then restore it with the ipod updater.
i myself am looking into getting a usb 2.0 card because im hoping it will fix my problem with random disconnections. i hope you work it out.

  • New MacBook cant see Airport Card

Just bought a new MacBook "refurb" from the Apple store. It was running fine, and accessing wireless networks, but just last night, it stopped seeing the Airport Card. When you click on "turn airport on" in Network Preferences, or you click on the airport icon in the Menu bar, it says "No airport card installed". I have tried removing the airport preferences file and rebooting. I have tried repairing preferences and resetting the PRAM, just in case it is software related. Anyone had this problem, and what was the fix. I am afraid I'm going to have to send it back to Apple for repair.

Although, you can certainly try "troubleshooting" the AirPort Extreme built in your MacBook, since you just got it from Apple, I would strongly suggest that they take a look and make the necessary repairs.

  • My Imac (brand new) isnt recognizing my airport card!

Hello lets get down to business.
So yesterday i finally moved to a mac and everything worked perfectly. The airport card was getting the internet signal perfectly yet when i woke up this morning a horrible thing happened! my imac says (on the top bar) that there is no airport card installed!
I'm talking about the one which already comes inbuilt with the Imac by the way. So what do you think it is and can I fix it or do i have to send it back to the store to have it fixed there?
    thanks everyone
oh and im using wired internet now ( the explanation for how i can get here in the first place!)

Not, you can't fix it yourself. Take the computer back where it was purchased. If you purchased it new, you can have it replaced within the first 14 days with no questions asked.

  • Got a new Mac Pro 2008 - need to install an Airport card

    Hello all,
To ensure quickest delivery I opted for the standard config new Mac Pro 8 core (early 2008). I did the same with my G5 4 years ago an installed an Airport Extreme card (with some difficulty !). Apparently the card in my G5 is not compatible with the Mac Pro. I cannot find any official reference to installing an Airport Extreme card in a Mac Pro…just a couple of 'hacks'. Apparently Apple doesn't want users to do this anymore.
    Q1/ What card do I need ?
Q2/ I see 3 antenna connections labelled 1, 2 and 3 on the cables. One is for Bluetooth apparently…but which one ?
Would very much appreciate any help.
    thanks in advance
    PA

    kura,
I ordered my Mac Pro with standard conf for the same reasons you did. I also discovered, as you did, that the newest Mac Pro required a different airport card and that installing the card doesn't appear to be user-friendly. I since found the following web site which presented installation procedure:
    http://meanderingpassage.com/2007/07/18/how-to-installing-an-airport-extreme-car d-in-an-intel-mac-pro/
I also was able to order the correct card (part number MB363Z/A) through a local Mac reseller although I see that it is available from other sources including Amazon (will ship from J&R).
I ordered the card yesterday but the dealer said that it was in stock and would take a few days to arrive so I have yet to actually install it.
Having installed airport cards on a number of other Macs I've owned, it is baffling that Apple would make this so darned difficult and awkward. In retrospect I should have ordered it as a build and had Apple install it but it is what it is.
    Hope this helps -

  • New classic with third part USB pci card

    Hi,
Just got a new 120gb classic for my son. But it does not
seem to work with his computer. He has an old g4 tower, with
third part usb 2 card. That worked fine with his 30gb video,
but the new 120gb classic is not even recognised by the system.
It is recognised by my g5, and my older 160gb classic is recognised
    by his g4.
My guess is that the current generation of ipod classics
is not compatible with the third party pci usb card. Aarg.
Does anybody know of a cheap usb 2 pci card that will work
with both a g4 and a new "classic" ipod?
    Any other thoughts?
    Thanks
    David

I reset parameter ram, updated all the software, and it seems to work fine now.
