New USB/MIDI Driver ... QS Powersup

With a new USB/MIDI driver v 1.2.1 from Yamaha, my Quicksilver 2002 G4 Dual 1GHz powers up when I turn on my connected motif es8 digital keyboard/synthesizer. I’m running OS X 10.5.8.
Is this a new feature of the Yamaha driver?
Or is OS X 10.5.8 sensitive to USB devices coming on?

Even older OS X systems were sensitive to USB products being plugged into the computer
and items such as printers being powered up; but usually this would be limited to awakening
a sleeping computer, and not starting one up from a power-off mode.
This situation, as you said it, is not traditional behavior in the computer; or Mac OS X, unless
something has been added to change the normal and physical startup, it should not happen.
However, if it does add a special and expected functionality, that could be very handy.
There would have to be something in the user's account to activate this different behavior;
so if that is an expected action given the software included with the product, this is new.
Perhaps there is something in the driver; but still, that could be seen as a security issue
if a computer can be started up from off, simply by using a peripheral product.
Other than noting the oddity, against the history of the basic OS X, I have nothing else to add.
Good luck & happy computing!

Now I would like to wipe and reformat the entire drive since I backed up the data. However before I reformat the drive, how can I set the label name into the format command while formatting as fat32? I don't need to use FDISK since I am not changing anything in regards to the partition table / chunk size. I just want to format as fat32 however I don't have mkfs.msdos or mkfs.fat32 on my Arch Linux system. I checked the Wiki and didn't find anything nor did any search thread results.
Anyone know what package I need to format fat32 & how I can set a label name so when it's mounted, I can see a specific name for the drive?

me spots some inconsistencies.  i'd bet if you used gparted instead, it'd warn you and say something like "create DOS Partition table first" or somesuch.
i dunno, this is the one area i like the wipe-my-ass-for-me bloat , could be worth a try.

  • New iMac new usb super drive but disc keep ejecting

I am a new user of a new imac, installed new usb super drive but disc keeps ejecting.

A reply to similar question (Q & As , in product page Apple Store) says:
"...dissable the internal reader hardware from devices setup. Then plug the external usb superdrive and that's it."  Answered by Enrique T from Lima Oct  25 2013.
If you can locate an external Apple USB 'Air" superdrive for earlier model MacBook Air, that should work. The newer one for the Air is the same as for iMac, now.
You may be able to use other brands of external USB optical drive with your older intel-based iMac, as some of them function capably. A few should also be able to see system discs or other bootable utilities on DVD.
    Hopefully this helps.

  • I have a new USB thumb drive that works in my 2010 iMac but not in my 2012 MacBook Pro

Today I purchased an 'autodrive' usb thumbdrive at Staples.  The drive works fine on my mid 2010 iMac, and my Asus Netbook running Windows 7.  However, it is not recognized at all by System Information or Disk Utility on my mid 2012 Macbook Pro.  Both Macs are running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
If I connect my 2 year old SanDisk USB thumb drive to the same USB port on my Macbook Pro, it is immediately recognized and a finder window opens.  The SanDisk drive is also recognized properly by the iMac and the Netbook.
Is there any way to further debug this issue to get a better idea of why the device is not being recognized by the Macbook Pro?
    Thanks,
    -Scott

I am having this exact same problem with my New MBP 15" quad core 2.6GHz i7 on 10.8.2.  I have other thumb drives that work, but an older thumb drive that works on my prior MBP 15" 2.7GHz dual core i7 on 10.7 and XP and Windows 8 laptops isn't recognized at all by the newer MBP.   This thumbdrive is only 256MB and may be USB 1, but USB 1 stuff should work on a USB3 interface unless it's a bug.  I've freshly formatted the drive and tested it with disk utility on the older MBP, so it's an issue with the newer Mac's USB controller or MacOS 10.8.2
    I suspect a bug.

  • Usb midi driver for older Edirol sk-500 keyboard for use in Intel Mac Pro

I have just moved to an Intel Mac Pro from my old G4 Power Mac. I was using a Edirol (Roland ED) SK-500 usb midi controller in both Garageband and Logic. The old driver doesn't want to work in the new Intel machine. Checked Edirol's site and didn't find anything newer to use and nothing that addressed the Intel situation explicitly.
Does anyone have a newer compatible driver or some other solution for this issue?
    Thanks,
    Gord

    intel mac pro 2 x 2.66 xeon, 2 gig ram, 1 terabyte storage   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

SK-500 is a discontinued product and I do not think Edirol will ever release a Universal Binary driver. I'd suggest you sell it, and buy their PCR-M50/80 keyboard (these are awesome) or if you also want sounds, get the Roland Juno-G synth (128 voices polyphony, 1000+ sounds, full-blown synth and 5 effects processors). All these work as USB MIDI controllers with Universal Binary drivers.

  • Trying to format a new USB flash drive so it will work on both a Mac and PC

I have a brand new Sandisk USB flash drive that I am trying to copy movie files onto from my Mac's hard drive.  For some reason I can copy one of the movie files but not the other, even though they are both Quicktime (.mov) files.  In doing some research, it seems the one file will not copy/paste likely because it is over 4 GB in size and the FAT32 filing system on the USB drive prevents files in excess of this size to be copied and pasted.
My question to anyone who can help me is:  How can I get files over 4 GB onto and off of this USB drive AND be able to use it for both Mac and PC computers?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Shaun

If I format the USB stick on my Mac as exFAT, will my client who´s most likely using a PC be able to screen it tomorrow morning...??
exFAT would only be an issue if they were running a version of Windows older than XP. If it is XP, they would need to install the free exFAT update before being able to access the drive.

  • Will new USB hard drive work in Safe Mode?

    Hello,
I just a had a recent post about some Toshiba laptop issues I am having.  To make sure I don't lose my files, I have have been looking at a Western Digital 500GB USB drive.
I'm able to boot to Safe Mode OK, and USB thumb drives have worked.  I noticed this WD USB drive has software to install.  Will I be able to use the USB hard drive for the first time in Safe Mode, or will I need to install the software first (which I don't think I'll be able to do in Safe Mode).
Just making sure I can before I buy it, thanks!
    Solved!

you should not have any problem installing the WD software in safe mode and perform the backup.

  • Where can I find the generic usb-midi driver?

    Hello All,
I'm having trouble with logic recording any midi signal as having latency. This is not the usual buffer question as I'm not concerned about a laggy audio playback when I depress a midi key - I'm more concerned about having logic record what midi I play exactly when I play it.
In an effort to solve the issue, I thought I'd try to re-install the generic usb-midi drivers that come with osx, but I can't find them - can anyone point me in the right direction? Are there "better" drivers?
If you're interested in the original problem or think you might have a solution, the original thread is here:

How can this be normal? If logic can't track a midi performance accurately then that's a huge flaw... What are other artists doing to work around this? Mousing everything is not an attractive option.
MIDI is an old protocol, and not a very fast one.
Different audio devices and different audio device drivers take different amounts of time to process audio and bring it to the outputs, or to process audio that comes IN through the inputs and is recorded, resulting in different latency for different interfaces.
This is normal, and completely expected - once you've read up on the basics of computer-aided recording, which is why people are telling you to read up on "latency" in the Logic manual.
This is why Logic has come with latency adjustment for playback/recording and MIDI output (positive or negative) for years and years - another reason why people are telling you to read up on "latency" in the Logic manual.

  • Request for new usb midi controller

Apple, please design a new midi keyboard controller designed around the touch screen technology you used for the IPhone. Include plugin controls for Logic Pro instruments. A 88 key weighted keyboard version for the hard-core acoustic piano folks and a 73 note organ waterfall version for synth and organ folks like me. You can add third-plugin templates later. Also Logic transport controls ,etc. If you need more ideas, just let me know. Anyone else have any thoughts on this suggestion?

Heck, if loneliness is your thing... more power to ya!
now why cant i hear the midi
MIDI doesn't make a sound. You either need to assign a software instument to it or use an external device, all depending on the track you chose. If you, perhaps elaborate a little more as to what you did (typing with your caps lock released), there's a better chance of getting your problem solved. If you're hearing your recorded guitar, then there's a chance you selected the wrong type of track to record to as far as MIDI tracks go (there is a difference in Logic).

  • New Keyboard Not Compatible With All USB Flash Drives

    Hi,
I've noticed that the new super-thin iMac keyboards are not compatible with all USB Flash Drives. Here's an example.
I have 2 USB Flash Drives. One is a ByteStor 2GB USB 2.0 High Speed Dataferry Flash Drive, the other is a Kingston DataTraveler 1GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive. Neither of these drives used to work with the previous design of iMac keyboard, giving me the "low power" warning.
However, the ByteStor works just fine with the new super-thin iMac keyboard, but oddly enough, the Kingston DataTraveler doesn't. Does anyone know why this is? What's the difference? When buying a new USB Flash Drive, how do you know if it's compatible with the new iMac keyboard or not?

Thanks. Yeah the Kingston DataTraveler works just fine if I plug it into one of the USB 2.0 ports on the back of the iMac. But if I plug it into the new thin Apple Keyboard, it gives the low power warning.

Anyway, I'll try that new keyboard software update and report back.

  • Yamaha KX61 USb MIDI keyboard doesn't work in Garage Band

I have installed latest Yamaha USB-MIDI driver V1.2.0 for Yamaha KX61.
I have connected USB cable to Mac Mini and turned the keyboard on.
In Other section of System Preferences I can see an icon for Yamaha USB-MIDI. In there I can see Device Name: Yamaha KX.
Yamaha KX61 is visible in Audio MIDI Setup utility under Midi Devices tab with Port 1, 2 and 3.
In GarageBand application Audio/MIDI preferences it shows "3 MIDI inputs detected" but Audio Input gives 2 choices only: System Setting and Built-In Input.
When I turn Keyboard off, Garage Band responds with message "The number of MIDI inputs has changed. Now no input is available." And then it shows MIDI status: 0 MIDI Input(s) detected.
When I turn Keyboard on, Garage Band responds with message "The number of MIDI inputs has changed. Now 3 inputs are available." And then it shows MIDI status: 3 MIDI Input(s) detected.
I don't understand how to get the keyboard play with Garage Band when adding new software instrument tack.
If anybody able to use KX61 in Garage Band, please share your experience.

Hope its ok to answer you own question.
Just buy the Apple "Lightning to usb camera adapter".  Plug it into the ipad 4 and plug your usb male A cable from the midi keyboard into it and fire up the apps.  Works fine--I just tested it.  You must have a keyboard or other usb device that requires very little or no power from the usb port in order to work.  Also, it must not require a usb driver.  See iosmidi.com/devices for a list of devices that should work.
A lot of investigation (not on any apple site) allowed me to glean out this information.

  • USB hard drive kills trackpad

I left my mid 2010 MacBook Pro 13" running for a few hours, cloning my internal hard drive using Disk Utility to a new USB hard drive, ready for a transplant.  It's not the first time I've done this, last time it all went well.  This time, when I came back to it, it appeared to have finished, but the trackpad was unresponsive.  The keyboard worked fine, spotlight search appeared immediately, and searched as quick as ever, so there's nothing wrong with the processor or hard drive.  The pointer would move about a minute after I used the trackpad, which is more or less unusable, and I was unable to eject the USB hard drive properly, so I yanked the cable.  The screen went black for half a second then came back and the trackpad was working perfectly again.  What's going on, and what should I have done differently?

I was on the phone with Apple for over an hour and unfortunately we don't have any solutions. But they took extensive documentation of the problem and said they would transfer it off to their engineering team and hopefully get back to me early next week.
They seemed truly appreciative of the bug report and interested to see what the problem was. If you have AppleCare I'd STRONGLY recommend that you call them and report the issue as well. The more people who report it the more likely we'll see a fix.
I ended up pulling the drive out of my USB case and transferring it to another FireWire case to get my data off of it. It doesn't solve the problem but it at least allowed me to access my data.

  • USB MIDI not working in Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

The problem is that even though my devices are recognized in Control Panel/ Sound and in Device Manager, no MIDI data actually flows and I cannot sync my keyboard to the Yamaha software that edits it.  The error message in the Yamaha software reads
“The following MIDI ports can not be opened at this time”.   At first, MIDI was working and I could sync up, but after about a week, right around the time I uninstalled and re-installed a MS Lifecam, it failed and has not worked since.
I have been working directly with Yamaha tech support on the issue for some time. I have a Yamaha SX70 XS keyboard, which is recognized by Windows as a connected USB device. It is self-powered, not powered by USB. I am using the Yamaha USB-MIDI driver version
3.1.2 for Windows 7 64-bit (the latest driver). And the latest versions of all their editing software for Win7 64-bit. They assure me that those work for other users of Win7 64-bit. In my case though, everything shows up in Windows, but MIDI doesn’t actually
work. And I cannot sync to the keyboard due to the above error message.
Yamaha tells me that their USB-MIDI driver is installing fine on my machine, except that it’s missing a windows driver at the bottom of the driver stack. (You can see this in Device Manager, Properties/Driver tab, then Driver Details. The missing driver
is ksthunk.sys, which I think handles kernel streaming. Sounds like that would relate to MIDI data. They have never heard of this driver not showing up there, and they cannot reproduce the problem. ksthunk.sys is on my machine in c:\windows\system32\drivers\
and in the registry the image path is \SystemRoot\system32\drivers\ksthunk.sys
All devices are “working properly” in Windows Device Manager, despite that missing driver. Yamaha MIDI Driver is shown in Control Panel/Sound, and it can be worked with there (opened, closed, configured, etc.).  I have also tried three different USB
cables (but those shouldn't be an issue since the keyboard is showing up in Windows).
I was also advised by Yamaha to edit registry key  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32  and remove all midi, midi1, midi2, etc entries, then uninstall and reinstall all drivers. Which I did, but it didn't help.
So far, no amount of re-installation, event viewing, uninstalling devices, numerous reboots, etc has fixed it. On this machine, that driver just doesn’t hook up to the Yamaha MIDI driver and show up in the stack.
So it looks like it may be a Windows 7 config problem on my machine, and I'm hoping someone here can give me some advice on how to fix it. The Microsoft forums contain a fair number of users reporting similar problems, some are audio and some are webcam
related. I've followed those threads, and done several of the suggestions, but haven't found a solution to this one.
This is a Dell XPS 8300 Windows 7 64-bit PC with all the latest updates, only about six weeks old. I've been struggling with the MIDI problem for most of that time.  I'm an IT professional (network and systems admin), so you can be fairly technical
    in your response.
Any suggestions will be welcome. Thanks in advance.

I am so glad I found keyman7's description, since I have exactly the same problem.
The problem is not related to MIDI output! I have it with a pure USB-MIDI-input device (keyboard), whichs produces "unknown externeal error" every time I try to select it as input. The same thing occurs with a USB-MIDI-Cable.
I compared the driver details from my system (Dell T1500 windows 7 pro 64 bit) with those of another windows 7 pro 64 bit. On that other system the device works like a charm (so it is not the hardware, either).
On the other system I find ksthunk.sys in addition to the modules that are listed on my system as well (beeing \windows\system32\drivers\drmk.sys, ..\prtcls.sys, ..\USBAUDIO.sys and \windows\system32\SysFx.dll, ..\WMALFXGFXDSP.dll).
Can it be some other USB driver is interfering with this driver stack? I have no idea how to figure out which one it could be. Or, it has been suggested in other threads with somewhat similar looking symptoms, ksthunk.sys has been removed as  UpperFilters
    entry?
    Help - please!

  • USB Hard Drive Permissions Issue

    Hi,
I just attached a new USB hard drive to my iMac. I would like to make it so only I can have write access to the drive; I want my kids to be able to see the files but not modify or delete.
I tried by unchecking 'Ignore permissions', and setting permissions where I have read/write, and others have read, but when I switch to one of my kids' accounts, they have full control, and in fact they are shown as owner.
Thanks for any help you can provide,

If my understanding is right, in the USB-hard-drive(NTFS), all folders in the USB drive have the unknown account and the root of the drive don’t have the account.
It is a SID. Possible that this account was removed and permission has not been removed.
Please take ownership of the folder and check if we can normally deleted the account.
