New (used) iMac! Help!

I have a new (used) iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. It has been completely wiped clean for the sale to me. I am new to Mac OSX and need guidance as to what I should install to make it run smoothly

I recommend Apple refurb store. They're practically new and have the full warranty.

  • Migrating from Time Machine from old iMac to new used iMac.

So, I bought a used iMac, and want to migrate to the new one using my Time Machine backup. Problem is, I go to Migration Assistant, and it asks for the admin password, which I don't have, and the place I bought it from is closed, of course. I had Lion on my old iMac, and I imagine my Time Machine backup is in Lion, but the iMac I bought has Snow Leopard. What do I do to migrate?

Yes, you will need the Admin password.  See http://www.cultofmac.com/111456/discover-the-hidden-password-reset-tool-in-lion- os-x-tips/
Then follow the instructions in option #4 of the box in the green box in Problems after using Migration Assistant.  (I know you haven't used it yet, but to transfer your user account(s) properly, without losing permission to your backups, that's what you need to do.)

  • Old 24" iMac to New 27" iMac  Help Please

+*Please some advise and help?+* I have a first generation 24" iMac and have ordered a new 27" Quad Core. I would like to transfer over my information the cleanest way I can to avoid any garbage on the old computer making its way to the new. My plan was to transfer the data and user settings only via Migration Assistant and reinstall all programs from original disks. I am NOT experiencing any problems with any programs on the old machine at this point. Is it then overkill to do the transfer as two separate steps? Will my old Network settings come over? I'm using an Airport Extreme which is also being used for Time Machine. What about my iPhone Sync? Once I transfer data to the new computer, will my iPhone Sync?
Is there any utility program or programs I should run prior to transfer to clean out anything?
    Thanks in advance for help
    Steve

When you get the new iMac, I would use it +as is+ for a while, to make sure it is working 100%. If you transfer things immediately, and have some issue, it is more difficult to determine the cause. So go through Setup Assistant without using Migration Assistant, then run Software Update to apply Apple's recent updates, then use the iMac until you are satisfied it is working perfectly.
If you want to use Migration Assistant, you can run it from Applications/Utilities/. On the screen where you select what to migrate, I would only select Users. I would not use it for +Applications, Settings, and Other...+ That should transfer your user data and leave out everything else.
If Migration Assistant successfully transfers your iTunes folder so that iTunes on the new iMac looks like iTunes on the old iMac, your iPhone should sync as before.
Is there any utility program or programs I should run prior to transfer to clean out anything?
You may want to go through the files and folders in your user home folder, if you believe there are a lot of files you no longer need. Just do it with Finder. The Downloads folder would be an obvious place to look for old files you no longer need.

  • I CAN'T INSTALL FINAL CUT PRO 3 ON MY NEW INTEL IMAC, HELP!!!

I'm trying to install FINAL CUT PRO 3 onto my new iMac but can't. It reads the disk but then says, "Original disk needed for install." I have the original disk, I own a registered copy of the program, so I'm stuck.

    Hi -
I believe Final Cut 5 is designed to run on a Power PC CPU machine, the current MacBooks use Intel chips - so the software will not install on your Intel based MacBook.
You can, however, upgrade from a full version of Final Cut 5 to Final Cut Studio 3 which contains the latest version of FCP, version 7 as well as Compressor, Color, Soundtrack Pro and Motion for $299 which is a steal as the full version for Final Cut Studio 3 is $999.
You only need the serial number of the full version (non-academic or non-upgrade version) to do the FCS 3 upgrade - you don't need to have FCP 5 loaded on your machine to make the upgrade work.
    Hope this helps.

  • Upgrading from 10.3.9 to 10.4 on a newly bought used imac - help!

    Hi,
I have just purchased a second hand imac powerpc G4 (700MHz) - which i love! - but that is currently running on OS X 10.3.9, and i would like to upgrade to v10.4. I am not very computer savvy (which is why i ended up buying the imac with v10.3.9 and not realising it would cause any issues for me!) and would like to know whether i need to purchase the upgrade version or the full version of tiger?
When i called Apple they informed me that they no longer sell tiger, but as far as i'm aware i can't upgrade to leopard v10.5 due to my system requirements, so i was told i'd need to look for a third party retailer. Question is, as i already have 10.3.9 on this computer (but do not have any of the original discs as I bought it used) what is required to upgrade it, and when I do, can I just erase everything on here (as it is all the previous owner's content) and start fresh??
A pretty dense question i'm sure - but any help would be much appreciated as i'm on a small budget and would like to buy the right software the first time around!
    Cheers,
    V

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but is still available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A and M9639Z/A . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray).

  • Transfer users & settings from G4 imac to new intel imac - help required

    Hi All,
I've just had a new imac delivered today, and I need answers to two questions:
    1) I have several users set up on my old G4 imac - how do I transfer all this to my new imac, without manually having to set everything up again. Is there a shortcut? I want to transfer all my files, photos, apps etc... without having to do anything - am I dreaming?
    2) I have my itunes library on an external harddrive. How do I transfer it back to my new imac without losing playcount, etc...
    Thanks in advance.
    Chris

    Hi Niel & Matt,
    Thanks that answers question one.
However I was not clear enough about my iTunes library. Once the migration assistant has worked (which sounds perfect), I want to move all my music library off the external back onto my mac. The external will then be used only as a pure backup device, instead of a day-to-day drive.
Simply, my iTunes library was too big for my old 80GB mac hard drive, so I moved it to an external for space, but the new iMac has a 750GB drive which is plenty for now.
The move to the external was a bit of a debacle - I lost my playcounts and ratings. I'd like to move it back from the external to the mac internal hard drive, but this time retain the playcount, rating, etc... information.
I'm sure its possible - can you advise?
    Cheers, Chris

  • Debating between 15" macbook (used) or an iMac (new/used) help?

With my tax return I need to get a new mac.  I used to have a 2008 17" macbook pro, but that died on me a little over a year ago.  I loved that thing and used it for everything as I am a graphic designer and musician.  I've gone over a year without a computer (I use my work computer which is a PC bleh), because I won't settle to buy a PC; i dislike them and always had problems with them, my beloved macbook was flawless until the graphics processor died and it wasn't worth the repair.  I need a mac asap haha!  My budget is likely between $1,000-$1,500, if i can spend less that'd be cool too, I might be able to get a decent used iMac for less.  I'm probably looking at buying a used macbook OR or a new/used iMac.  I loved the portability of my macbook when I had it, I regularly did work at local cafes and libraries, BUT with my said budget I'm wondering if I might get more bang for my buck with an iMac and am wondering if an iMac can be portable?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm also debating and wondering about others' experience with buying a mac on craigslist vs. ebay.
Would I be able to finance a new Macbook if I put $1,000 down, my credit isn't the best due to unpaid student loans.  I tried to finance a macbook with no money down and couldn't get approved.  My only worry with buying used is if it'll have a shorter lifespan.
Any advice on buying a mac with my situation would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

  • I am new with iMac and I am trying to copy some file from my external HDD but it does not let me also I can't delete anything from this HDD using the finder. Can somebody help me , please?

I am new with iMac and I am trying to copy some file from my external HDD that a used with my PC but it does not let me also I can't delete anything from this HDD using the finder. Can somebody help me , please?

No, unfortunately, when you format a drive, it will erase all the contents. So you will need to find a temporary "storage" place to put the stuff using a PC so you have access to it. Then reformat using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). If only using with mac, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use GUID Partition scheme under Partitions/Options. After formatting, you can drag the files back.

  • Trouble using Migration from iMac to new i5 iMac

I just purchased the new i5 iMac. I want to use the migration software to transfer my files, programs etc. to my new machine. Everything goes as directed until the i5 reads my old iMac and then give me this error:
"There are no versions of Mac OS X available on your old Mac."
What does this mean. My old mac is running OS X 10.4.11. Will I still be able to migrate all my information?

Problem solved! I don't know what the problem was. Probably the order I was turning on the computers. They were recognizing each other but I was getting the error message on the new computer. I shut everything down and the started over and everything clicked!
Thanks for the help! I will look out for Rosetta and will definetly repair permissions as soon as the updates are done.
I love this site! Better than any tech department around!

  • Help! Bought a used iMac (2008) and I'm trying to install quicktime but its asking me for a password and has Apple in the "Name" spot.  How do I retrieve or reset the password?

    Can anyone help...
I just bought a used iMac (2008) from an ebay seller and I'm trying to install quicktime but its asking me for a password and has Apple in the "Name" spot.
How do I retrieve or reset the password?
It came with the upgrade of Mountain Lion but I cannot find quicktime in the applications.  When I try to install anything this Installer Password thing comes up... so I'm stuck.

I think you're slightly misunderstanding something, so maybe I'll try to chime in, even though everyone has said it in various ways.
Before OSX 10.7 (aka Lion) came out, the upgrades to OSX belonged to the Mac and not the user. Probably there was a technical legality in the user agreement that you couldn't do that, but everyone did. I could sell a Mac with Snow Leopard (or anything before that) by just erasing the hard drive, and reinstalling OSX. Then ship it to the buyer. Now, I was pretty honest as a seller, and including not only the original installation discs but also any upgrade. I would only sell a Mac if I was replacing it, so I always was getting the brand new version.
With OSX 10.7, upgrading was done online, with no disks. So the upgrades were tied to an Apple ID rather than the machine. Recently, I sold a MacBook Pro (to upgrade to a 27" iMac), which came with Lion. I had promised the buyer that it would come with Mountain Lion, but I didn't know that the upgrade was tied to my Apple ID. I made good with the buyer by sending along a $20 Apple App Store card so that she could upgrade to Lion.
So what everyone is saying here is that you need the original Installation discs or Snow Leopard disk to reinstall and wipe out the Mountain Lion that is on your Mac. It doesn't belong to you, it belongs to the seller, and without his Apple ID and password, you cannot use it. Once you do a reinstall of Snow Leopard, then you can upgrade to Lion and then to Mountain Lion. I do not believe you can upgrade directly to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard, but I'm not sure.
If the seller claimed that you were getting Mountain Lion, then he was lying to you (or being more civil, maybe he just didn't know like I did). If you bought the used machine from Amazon Sellers or from eBay, then you have recourse through the feedback system or through PayPal. If you bought it any other way, you're on your own.

Foxfire won't let me open a new tab. I have my setting set to open a new tab. I've clicked on it and nothing happens. I've right clicked and selected open new tab and nothing happens. When I go to Foxfire for help it will open a new tab for help. When I try to use this tab to browse, anything in the other window gets shut down.

    1. In the Tools menu select Add-ons to open the add-ons manager.
    2. In the Add-ons manager select the Extensions panel

Hi, i'm new using numbers, and when I try to open a excel file don't let me do it, instead appears a box whit a error and close app,  any help?

    What does the error say?
A couple of thoughts: the file is corrupted or is password-protected. Corruption is more likely to cause Numbers to crash & Numbers cannot open password-protected Excel files. Try using one of the free Office clones & see what happens.

    Hi mshields1162,
Great question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
First, you may want to choose to have the sidebar displayed for familiarity:
    iTunes 11: Frequently used features
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5649
Afterwards, your device should be displayed if connected:
We'll want to click on it, and choose the Music tab at the top. Let's make sure "Sync Music" is checked:
Afterwards, you'll have the option to sync either the entire music library (for your first iPod), or "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" (for the secondary device). Upon selecting this option, four larger option boxes will appear allowing you to pick and choose what content will be synced. For audiobooks, you may need to do the above in the "Books" section. For a visual instruction on how to do this, see the following:
iTunes 10: Sync to your iPod

    Thanks,

Normally, you just connect the monitor to the MacBook using a VGA adaptor that you can buy from an Apple Store.  Now try System Preferences > Displays > Detect Displays.  You should now be able to select a display mode for the monitor.  If it still doesn't work, then I'd check that everything is properly connected.  I've had problems with colours disappearing due to a faulty connection in the VGA adaptor.
