New user account...can't log in...!!! set password doesn't work

ok. i post this again because i have yet to get an answer after many months.
Created new user account. I am the administrator. When changing to the new account i am prompted for password. Password is rejected EVERY TIME. how do i enable my computer to read the new account?
System 10.4.4
Desperately yours,
kent

I am getting the same problem!!!
I'm on a G5 iMac 2nd Gen., and if I make a new user account, then log out of the admin account and try to log into the just created user... the password does not work!! I am 1,000,000% positive the password I am entering is correct.
I would delete the just created user, then make another new one with some of the information changed, maybe try making the user an admin (which i shouldn't have to do obviously) and it still will not work!! Looks like I just have to reinstall OS X. There is no other way around it. I've even tried resetting the password through the admin user account in the Users preference pane, and through the reset password utility on the install disk.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Report any errors it found for Disk Repair, don't need the ones for Permissions Repair.
Try it again & see if anything changed, but have Activity Monitor open & Show All Processes & sorted on CPU%, also have Console open if we can... maybe not when switching, but we'll see.
Does this happen if you just try to create a new admin user???

  • Creating a new user account and curious log in behavior...

First off I'd just like to apologize if that is not the correct place to be posting this, but after looking around I don't see a perfect fit for this topic anywhere, so I figured here should be okay. Also I want to apologize if this turns out to be a rather lengthy post, I just want to ensure that I supply all info...
Okay, so about a month ago I recognized that my current user account is slowly but surely taking longer and longer to "boot up" after I put in my password and tell it to log in. What usually happens is that I click log in, the background image and taskbar almost immediately pop up but nothing else (finder icons, dock, and the multiple icons in the taskbar which include the airport signal, user name, bluetooth status, battery strength, volume, and my iChat and Adium status) the only things to immediately "activate" in the taskbar are the clock and spotlight.
As of late when I log in something especially strange is happening in that after the 5 or so minutes it takes the dock, rest of taskbar, and finder icons to appear my PB will play the default Apple sound of me emptying trash, rather there is anything actually in the trash or not. It dosen't delete the objects in the trash (if any, as I usually keep it empty), just simply plays the sound. I'm not sure if it playing this sound ties in any with the lagging log in times, I just wanted to mention it as the log in times have slowed down considerably since this sound started.
Bottom line given that there is no way that I know of fixing this problem, I am planning to simply create a new user account. Actually I have already created the new account (by the way, it logs in literally instantaneously, and does not make the strange trash being emptied sound) but was looking for info on how to get all of my files from one account to the other. Unfortunately for me everytime that I install a program and the dialog box pops up asking if you want to install it on all user accounts or just the current one I always click "just the current one" (please don't ask why, as there is seriously no reasoning to this at all...), so is there a way to transfer my current programs from one user account to the other without reinstalling??? It's actually not that many programs I'm talking about here (Shapeshifter, Xounds, XFactor, AIM, Adium, Cocktail, Toast, Popcorn, iPod Rip, and Office), I just figured that if I can simply transfer rather than reinstalling them, it would be a lot easier.
However my 2 primary concerns are my iTunes and iPhoto libraries (3330 songs and 4182 pcitures respectively), considering that I've spent literally hours making countless playlist in iTunes, and countless folders, slideshows, and books in iPhoto, if I was to lose all this it would truly be a mess.
I know I'm probably making a big deal out of this and it's an extremely easy and basic process, please just pardon this still pretty new Mac user and help me out:) Also if anybody else has experienced the log in slow down or strange trash being emptied sound I would be glad to hear your experiences.
    Thanks in advance!!!
    Mervyn

    Hi Mervin,
Bottom line given that there is no way that I know of fixing this problem, I am planning to simply create a new user account.
You can do that (but I wouldn't) this KB article outlines how:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=155373
Basically you will copy the folders within your old home to replace the folders in the new home. Here is a list of specific folders if you decide to do that but a better solution would be to sort your existing user.
Here where your important data is stored ("~" stands for "Home"):
    Your Data in Documents
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Application Support/iCal(copy the whole folder)
Also in ~ / Library/ Application Support (copy whatever else you need)
~ /Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist * This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.
    ~ / Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
    ~ / Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    ~ / Library/iMovie (copy the whole folder)
    ~/ Pictures/iPhoto Library
    If you want cookies:
    ~/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    ~/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
so is there a way to transfer my current programs from one user account to the other without reinstalling???
As for applications, they should all be in your Application folder(there is only one) and available to ALL users, unless you have put "limitations" or "parental controls" on the account.
Now to the best course of action:
To find the issue affecting your existing user account, follow these steps:
Log back into your normal user account:
    1. Navigate to ~(yourhome/library/fonts - drag this folder to the desktop.
         • Restart and test your applications.
         • If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( Likely suspects are Time RO & Helvetica Fractions, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
    2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
         • Navigate to ~(yourhome/library/preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
         • Restart and test your applications.
         • If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs" .
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)
    3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
       • Navigate to yourhome/library.
       • Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
       • Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
       • Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
    • Click on "apply to all"
       • If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same      procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are      having trouble with.
    Note:
The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.
If the isssue persists navigate to ~/library/caches and drag this folder to the trash, then log out and back or restart. There is no need to replace this folder.
    Good luck, let us know.

  • New user account - can't store anything

I created a new user account but it doesn't seem to have "permission" to store anything.  I can't download a file from Safari to the Desktop.  I can't even use PhotoBooth.
The account accepts the password and will open Safari, but won't let me export any file to the Desktop etc

I am getting the same problem!!!

  • Newly created user accounts can't log in??

I've got a 5 year old who is starting to use my computer for game playing, typing notes, and simple web stuff.
I want to set up a user account for him with parental controls so he can't randomly rename, delete, or change things.
I've followed the directions, set up a user account, given it a password... logged off my admin account ...
and when I click on his login picture, it brings up the password window, and when I input the password, it just gives a little shake, clears the password line, and lets me try again.
I've deleted that account and created a new one without parental controls. I've tried having NO password in the password line. I've tried making sure the short names for the accounts I'm creating are exactly 8 characters. I've turned off Norton antivirus. Nothing works - I cannot log in with any newly created account??
    What else can I try?

    Sara
Well you probably don't need to be told the NetInfo database is in a bit of a mess, but the significant thing is the "No such file or directory" from the last two commands. Basically this is where passwords are stored (encrypted) since the system changed to "Shadow Hash" passwords in 10.3.
Your account seems to be OK since it predates this change, and when you installed new system versions you chose the "Upgrade" option which left your settings alone. This is why your primary group is 'staff', or 20, whereas for Will it is creating a group 'will', or 502. That bit appears to be working, just not the passwords. Your password still works because it is in the old 'passwd' file (in encrypted form).
By far the best thing, at this stage, would be to do an Erase and Install, but this depends on you having a complete and up to date backup of all your files. See Mac OS X 10.4: About installation options. Alternatively you might try an Archive & Install, see Mac OS X : About the Archive and Install Feature, probably not choosing the "Preserve Users and Network Settings" option. But note this requires you to backup a lot of your data, and then re-enter settings and so on.
If you have a backup, the Migration Assistant can help you get your files back in place.
If it were my machine of course, I would probably carry on a bit longer trying to fix things, but the appearance of "#NoValue#" twice in the NetInfo output suggests some serious inconsistency which would be difficult to fix.
Let us know how you get on, and Good Luck!

  • Migration Assistant created new user account & can't delete it

Hi - I'm a new Mac user (MacBook Pro). I seem to have an extra account and am not sure why. Here's what happened:
I setup my MacBook Pro and did not run Migration Assistant at that time. I later ran Migration Assistant to migrate PC files to the MacBook. A second account was created after the migration. All my PC content is in the second account. None in the original account. When I look at the Users & Groups in System Preferences, I see that both accounts are Admin accounts.
I do not want the original account that was created for me on the MacBook Pro before I trasnferred any of my PC files over.  I just want to keep the account that was created to house all my PC files when they were migrated over.  However I cannot migrate that original account - the " - " is just greyed out.
Please can someone advise how I delete it.  I do not want two admin user acconts - just the onen with all my PC files in.
I realise I should have done the PC transfer at start up using "set up assistant" but for whatever reasons I chose to delay it by a day or so and hence used Windows Migration Assistant.
Please tell me how I can delete the surplus user account created for me originally when I used the Mac for the first time.
Thanks in advance for all feedback and advice.  This is my first Mac after 20 years of Windows, so big step for me and still learning!  So easy to understand instructions please would be bonus
    thanks all

Unfortunately I see that no one has been able to help me with this . . . so instead of addressing the question above. can someone please tell me how to reset my Mac to "factory settings", ie how it was the day I bought it and before I switched it on for the first time.  Delete everything on there now. That way I will do set up properly and transfer data from my PC first of all instead of revisiting it.
Please can someone tell me how to do this
    Many thanks

  • Archive and Reinstall... but can't access... password doesn't work?????

I have a Mac Mini with 10.4.11 and had some difficulties, so I decided t archive and reinstall OS X from the disc (10.3). After an hour of installation, I restarted and it got to the password page, which I never regularly used. There were 2 sign ins and I couldn't get any passwords that I always use to sign in and there is nothing to click to say that I don't remember my password. All the screen does is shake it's head and then give me another try. Eventually, it does give me a hint about my usual password, but that doesn't work. What can I do to bypass and get into the system?

    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.

  • ITunes does not launch with new User Account (Vista)

One of my limited user accounts on Windows Vista because corrupt, so I created a new limited User Account and copied ALL of the files from the old to new.
Now, when I try to launch itunes on the new user account, it will not open at all. Itunes works on my administrative account, with no problem.
Can someone tell me the most pain-free way to resolve this issue. And, whatever solution, will I be at risk of losing my itunes libraries?
    Thank you in advance.

Hiya. Delayed again. Browsers being cranky. (I blame the aftershocks.)
It's actually plausible that it was installed in there (by doing a run as administrator on the installer itunes64setup.exe, perhaps). Because that suggests a possible cause for these continual permissions-related problems.
A lot of what you're seeing is consistent with damaged ACLs (access control lists) on files, folders and registry keys. Although it's a lot rarer than it used to be, one of the ways you could get borked ACLs was if a program (like iTunes or QuickTime) was installed in one user account, and then the user account it had been installed in was deleted (or otherwise rendered unusable).
We don't know which particular permissions are stuffed up here. But there's a shotgun approach to fixing them which used to work okay, although it's a bit fiddlier to do on a 64-bit system than a 32-bit system.
I'd strongly recommend setting up a system restore point prior to doing this, so you can revert if things turn to custard.
The basic technique you follow is from the following blog entry *with one important modification.*
[Solving setup errors by using the SubInACL tool to repair file and registry permissions|http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2006/09/04/solving-setup-e rrors-by-using-the-subinacl-tool-to-repair-file-and-registry-permissions.aspx]
The modification is that when you're editing the file to replace YOURUSERNAME with the name of the account, edit the first line so that %ProgramFiles% instead says %ProgramFiles(x86)% and after the line that reads:
    *subinacl /subdirectories %programfiles%\ /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f /grant=users=e >> %temp%\subinacl_output.txt*
    ... add another line saying:
    *subinacl /subdirectories %programfiles(x86)%\ /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f /grant=users=e >> %temp%\subinacl_output.txt*
(The first is to make sure the commands see the subinacl, because it installs in \Program Files (x86)\ on 64-bit systems, and the second alteration is to make sure that the permissions for the 32-bit program files are fixed too.
After doing that (it'll take a while to run), can itunes launch normally in the new account?

  • Illustrator CC will only launch in new user account.

I have been having trouble with the main user account settings causing newly installed apps to crash.
I couldn't install Adobe Creative Cloud apps on the main user account… they kept crashing on launch.
With the help of Adobe Support (taking remote control of my Mac), after trying and trying to install them on my main user account, they eventually successfully installed them in a new user account with no problem. However, this is a work-around and not the best solution.
It appears that the main user account settings conflicted with the product launch. On successfully installing on the new user account they strongly suggested that that I should now contact you guys at Apple Support to check for the permissions/settings on the main user account and check if there are any certain permissions that may conflict with the Adobe Illustrator CC.
As advised, I contacted Apple Supprt and have spent several hours and did the following with their help:
    DISK UTILITY
    Verified Disk Permissions
    Repaired Disk Permissions
    Verified Disk
    ADOBE PRODUCTS
Confirmed that Acrobat XI Pro worked in Admin user account
Confirmed that Dreamweaver CC worked in Admin user account
Confirmed that InDesign CC worked in Admin user account
Confirmed that Bridge CC worked in Admin user account
Confirmed that Photoshop CC worked in Admin user account
Confirmed that Illustrator CC failed in Admin user account, but worked in new user account.
Uninstalled Illustrator CC and reinstalled it through Creative Cloud CC
Removed all Illustrator 17 Preferences in both Libraries
As before Illustrator CC failed in Admin user account, but worked in new user account.
    APPLE SUPPORT SUGGESTION
I should return to you, saying, "...this would be best handled by the adobe support reps. User specific errors can occur in any application and there are things that the 3rd party vendor can look at to resolve this issue."
I'm getting batted back and forth like a tennis ball. Any solid suggestions? Has anyone been through this loop?

    Hi creatorii,
You need to make sure if you have proper permissions set on the right folders.
Please follow the steps below and let me know :
    - Go > Go To Folder. Type ~/library and you will get Preferences folder.
    - Control-click the folder and choose Get Info.
    - Expand the Sharing & Permissions section.
    - Click the lock icon in the lower-right corner.
    - Expand the Sharing & Permissions section.
    - Enter your administrator user name and password when prompted, and then click OK.
    - Click on + icon and add the Admin and all users showing.
    - Set permission for all users and admin as read/write
    - Click the Gear icon, and select Apply to Enclosed Item
Follow the same steps for the below folder too
Choose Go > Go To Folder. Type ~/library/Application support and give full permission to Adobe folder.
    Launch Illustrator and check.

  • HT2518 I've migrated from PC to IMAC, but it has created new users. I can't access these user accounts even though I've set up passwords for them as administrator. Can you assist?

I have transferred files from PC to IMac using Migration assistant. This has automatically set-up new users on the IMac and I can't access these. As administrator, I have set-up passwords for these new users, but when i try to acces these new users usung those passwords, the screen shakes as if the passwords are incorrect. Any suggestions?

    fungec wrote:
I can see these in my user groups, and I can change the passwords on both as often as I like. But when I then try to logon, the screen just shakes and nothing happens.
I don't do Windoze, so haven't been able to test migrating from a PC.
There have been a few similar posts here.   Are you trying to log on to the new user account(s) via Fast User Switching?  If so, apparently that doesn't work.   You need to turn that off (via System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options. Remove the check from the Show fast user switching .... box.
Then log out of all accounts, restart, select the new account from the login screen and you should be prompted to set the password.
I'm not sure a screenshot will help (and to be honest I'm not sure how to do screenshots on the IMac - I've been a PC man for over a decade!).
In most places, Shift+Cmd+3 will print the entire screen; Shift+Cmd+4 will produce a "target" you can drag over a portion of the screen.
EDIT:  by "most places" I mean after you're logged-on, and OSX knows your preferences about how & where to put the screenshot.  So it won't work on the login screen itself.

  • How do I set up a new user account that can use all my software?

I set up a new user account on my 3 year old BTO iMac running OS 10.8.5. Unfortunately, when I tried to use it, the computer thought none of my software was registered, activated, licensed, etc. With 26 GB of applications on this machine, it will be a colossal chore to re-do everything. Is there any way around this?
    Thanks for your time,
    Larry

Is your regular user an Admin?
Yes. So is the new account I tried to set up.
Are these apps installed in the main /Applications folder?
    Yes.
Are they App Store apps or installs from disc/download?
Both, but App Store purchases are a clear minority, and aren't much of a problem, due to the ease of re-downloading and activating. The downloaded programs are the ones that present the problems. I have not been good about archiving serial numbers and the like, mostly because I've never had a problem like this before.
What specific apps are you having trouble with? For instance, I know that MS Office and Adobe CS5 for perfectly well for all users on my MBP.

Not much, since I have no idea where the problem is. I looked for some central repository of software serial numbers or activations, but didn't find one.

  • Can't create new user account....

Hi- I am trying to create a new user account so that I can see if some of the issues I am having with my G4 Mac also are issues under a different account. I have (several times) created a new account and assigned a password and also tried having no password. Either logging out or using Fast User Switching, I click on the new user icon and either type in the password (I know I have it correct since it's my default password) or not type it in if I have no password set, and click on login. That's when I get the shaking window. No matter what I do, I can't login!! I am at a loss of what to do or what could be causing this. Any help will make me a happy Mac user again! Judy
PS- After I had this problem surface, I ran Monoligual and got rid of lots of language support and I also ran Font Nuke to clean out some font caches.... but these were run after I had problems setting up a new user account. I was having issues with the new upgrade for my genealogy program, Reunion (still having issues actually-they can't figure out what's causing the problem) and I removed some "things" from Login Items. Can't tell you what they were but I have some there still. I ran Disk Warrior and iDefrag also recently. Also have repaired permissions. The other issue I had (yesterday anyway-haven't used it much today yet) is that Safari was crashing when I was accessing my public library's online catalog............. I don't know if any of these are related to my inability to create a new user account or not but thought I'd throw that into the mix.

You say a dialog comes up for you to enter a password when you don't have a password while using Fast User Switching. That should not happen.
If you set up an account without setting the password, Fast User Switching won't bring up the password dialog for that account. Instead, it will instantly switch to that account when you choose it.
Make sure there is nothing in the password field when you set up the account, or change the password and don't type anything in for either the new or verify fields. It'll ask you to confirm that you don't want a password and "Cancel" will be the default button. Choose the "Ok" button instead.
That should do it. If not, then I have no idea.

  • What is the password for the new user account that is set up via Migration Assistant?

I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro, and used Migration Assistant to download My Documents from a previous PC desktop. The migration was successful, but afterwards the new user account that was set up to house all the new documents became inaccessible to me.
My administrator's password works for my computer and I am able to log in and out, change settings, etc.
However, if I try to log in to the new user account, no password works. Through the administrator's account I have also attempted to change the password, and I am allowed to do so, but when I use the new password I set up, it still denies me access.
Additionally, if I log out the administrator's account and click the new account to log in, it prompts me to make a new password for the account, and whatever I enter is also rejected as "incorrect." (The screen shakes)
I am very frustrated my inability to access this information I must use to work, and I have no idea what the password might be, or how to change it properly.
PLEASE HELP COMMUNITY! I have only had my mac for about a week and I have had it up to hear with this "user friendly" system.

You can change the password from Visual administrator. login to visual administrator, and select services,, under that you will find the system details. change the password.
even if the visual administrator password is expired then u can go thorugh configtoo.bat and there u can change the password.
if that even not possible then u need to login to sql and can execute the commands for changing password.
    Regards,
    mahesh
