New user - Guess what, I have speed questions!

So, Inifinity went in yesterday as planned. All good there.
Initially the engineer showed me that the line was rated at 37 meg and upload of around 10 meg, which is all good.
However, running tests on Speedtest.net over the wireless show that I'm getting around 2meg down and 8meg up. The up is of course good, but the 2meg down seems a bit, ropey! Continued tests throughout the day on wired and wireless showed this to be consistent.
One thing the engineer told me to do was: "Just before you go to bed, shut down the router and the modem and then repower them" I thought this made sense as he should know what he's talking about. So I did this thinking it would resolve my issues. However, having read through the forums last night, after I powered off the kit, it seems that could have been a mistake.
So testing this morning, on speedtest.net it shows at 12meg down and 7meg up over a wired connection and the same again over a wireless connection.
However, when I use BT Speedtest I get the following:
> Download speedachieved during the test was - 32657 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 12000-37132 Kbps .
 Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is -37132 Kbps
2. Upstream Test: -provides background information.
Upload Speed
8140 Kbps
0 Kbps
10000 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed
>Upload speed achieved during the test was - 8140 Kbps
 Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 10000 Kbps
When you compare this to a real world test (Download the lastest version of Ubuntu for example) I get just 300k download speed.
So my questions are as follows!
- Why does BT speed test rate that much higher than anything else?
- What should I believe in terms of speed?
- Why are my actual downloads so much slower than they were with Be Internet which was a copper based service
- Has turning my modem off caused an issue?

That router is a cable router, it doesn't have a modem built in. The downloads are from HTTP and FTP, I'm testing using major sites like Microsoft, Apple, Ubuntu and various other sites where I've seen big speeds from before.
These are the tests I've done, all from a wired connection direct to the Home Hub
http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/ gives me results of 7.3 down and 7.0 up
http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ gave 7.5 down and 8 up
http://www.thinkbroadband.com gave 1.5 down!! and 6.5 up
http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ gave 6.5 down and 7.8 up
http://www.speedtest.net/ gave 5.9 down and 8.10 up
Meanwhile BT.speedtest gave the following:
1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Download Speed
29690 Kbps
0 Kbps
37132 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed
> Download speedachieved during the test was - 29690 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 12000-37132 Kbps .
 Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is -37132 Kbps
2. Upstream Test: -provides background information.
Upload Speed
8153 Kbps
0 Kbps
10000 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed
>Upload speed achieved during the test was - 8153 Kbps
 Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 10000 Kbps
So, to me there seems to be something odd. All the other tests are in the same sort of ball park, which would tally with the 500k downloads I'm seeing from the 'real world' tests I've been running.

The problem is that your Mac software is quite old.  You must have a version of OS X on your Mac earlier than 10.6.8 (current is 10.8.3), so your particular version of OS X cannot support any later version of iTunes.  (The current iTunes version is 11.0.2).  In particular, your iTunes on your computer cannot deal with your iPad which has software that is much more current than your OS X operating system (and Mac iTunes).

  • New to iMovie: What can I expect questions

I recorded 2 days worth of a presentation for work. (About 6 hours) each day. I have imported the footage into iMovie. The Camera/iMovie broke it into about 52 minute clips. I'm currently working on day 2, it has 7 chips. I've figured out how to export the clips as one movie to the media browser. Here are my questions.
What are the recommendations for getting both days onto a DVD?
Can I get both days on a DVD or am I going to need to break it down into shorter segments?
My end users/viewer will probably be viewing this on their computers. And may want to use short clips in other powerpoint presentations. What export format would you recommend? (video size,compression,...) and other detailed recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
As I write this post. I started exporting one 52min clip via quicktime the progress bar started out with 5.5hours of time remaining. My questions is this reasonable?
Also, if there are websites that have these type of helpful insights/suggestions links to them would be appreciated.
I guess what I'm looking to do is to get the video that I shot onto a dvd disk in a format the my coworkers can view/use and minimize the time that it takes to get it there is my goal.
    Thanks.

.. what I'm looking to do is to get the video that I shot onto a dvd disk in a format the my coworkers can view/use and minimize the time that it takes to get it there is my goal.
so, a videoDVD, as iDVD produces, is NOT your goal ( ? ) .. videoDVDs are final delivery, end-of-the-road, not meant for further processing..
    but..
you ask for the 'universal' video format.. which is, anyone remembering the beta/vhs wars?, not invented yet..
you haven't told us the format of source.. ? miniDV/Standard.. ? HiDef? AVCHD? .. depending on that info, we can give advice for a 'faster' export.
and, you haven't told us, what format your co-workers can handle? video-format.. powerpoint is no video format, nor avi and mov are formats (these are containers...); we need dv, h264, mpeg4, .. something like that as answer ..
just to mention: 1 hour dv 'native' is ~13GBs data.. so, DVD is perhaps the wrong media.. using a 'better' compressor as h264 allows much more to fit on one dataDVD, but, as you noticed already, means hours or encoding.. (btw: your Mac needs 20-40GBs free internal to handle encoding.. going under means slowing down the process dramatically .... ).
do they need 'fullsized' or is e.g. 320x240 allowed (=reduces file size dramatically)
.. so, a few Qs, now it's your part to answer..

  • New to Mainstage but I have one question.

    Hi guys,
I'm new to Mainstage, but not to Logic.
Anyway, I have one rather complicated question before I dig though all the manuals.
Here is the set up that I want to achieve. My buddy has an I-Mac, I have a MacBook. What we have been doing involving logic is that I have 3 Guitar rig 4's going. A stereo pair for each Guitar rig. I am able to switch between the rigs with a single guitar input. While in each rig I use my FCB 1010 controller and make loops. After a loop is made I switch to a different guitar rig and make a 2nd loop. After that I go to the 3rd guitar rig and play leads over the first 2 loops. These are all going to separate tracks in my firnds I-Mac where he has drum machines going and he is playing his keyboards. We record all this in real time. Logic can sort of handle this, but not really all that well and I get some strange behaviors.
In Mainstage, I know you can use the mobius looper which is similar to the Gibson Echoplex that I used to own. The mobius doesn't work too well in Logic so that's why I don't use it there. It doesn't sync in Logic, but I think that it might in Mainstage. What I want to do is have one instance of guitar rig and 2 to 3 instances of the mobius looper.
Here is my question finally. Can I use my FCB1010 to control the distort, delay, and other various effects in Guitar rig 4 while playing loops in a Mobius looper. Then move to another looper, play more loops, then go the 3rd track and play over the loopers? I would need separate outs for each looper or guitar track, which I have with my Presonus Firebox. The whole time I would need to sync Mainstage with my friends master clock coming out of his I-Mac.
    Can this be done?
I know it sounds like a complicated set up, and maybe it is, if there is an easier way that has sync of the loopers, and I can run hands free with my one guitar, Presonus interface, and Behringer FCB1010 I would really like to know.
I find for some reason that I have crazy set ups that nobody has ever tried before. I'm hoping that is not the case with this.
Thank you for reading my long winded post and I hope to hear from you soon.
    Shawn

Well, are you using the looper tool in mainstage, or a different looper?
I'm thinking that there is a way to us guitar rig as my main sound source and route into other tracks (bussing it over) and have loopers enabled in those other tracks. That way I can lay down a rhythm in one track, move to the next track, do the same looping with a different guitar patch, move to the 3rd track and play with even a different sound while the other loops are going in the first two tracks.
Is that what you do? Do you play live and have synced to another source?
    Thank you,
    Shawn

  • New to iPhone...Have a question that hopefully someone can answer...

    Hello,
I am a fairly new iPhone user and I have a question. In order to purchase songs from iTunes and get them on my iPhone do I have to download iTunes directly onto my iPhone and do it all through my iPhone? The reason I ask this is because I purchased a few songs from iTunes on my home computer and when I synced my iPhone it said that those songs were not transferred because it is not allowed on more then one machine. Please help???

    Larla,
Did the message mention some songs could not be transferred because they are not authorized to play on this computer? If so, you can authorize the computer if you haven't authorized five computers already. If you have already authorized 5 computers, you can deauthorize all, and then reauthorize up to 5 computers.
To authorize this computer go up to the Store menu in iTunes, and choose "Authorize Computer". You will be prompted to enter your iTunes Store account username and password. Once it says the computer has successfully been authorized, you can then sync your iPhone with those songs.
If you got a different error message, please reply with it.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • New User To Lightroom 3 - File / Catalog Questions?

My first time out I did an " Import Photos " and all looks good, but I have some questions about where the image files are located?
    First my setup .....
"C" drive contains all applications and operating system
"G" drive contains iPhoto libraries and this is where I copy all files before doing anything with the.
"G" is an external drive and allows me to easily move work between two different computers.
I do "Import Photos" and pointed it toward the folder on the " G " drive labeled " Timonium Bike Show "
All images were imported into LR3, but where are the physical files kept?
I'm going to guess they remain on the "G" drive and LR3 only creates a " catalog " referring to them. Is that correct? If so, than I guess I should leave that folder on "G" drive alone and work its contents from within LR3.
I plan to do most of the work in LR3, occasionally as needed going to an external editor.
Catalog Names ...... Can I rename a catalog once it has been created, or only name it before it is created in the creation dialog box?
Prior to LR3 I was using Apple's iPhoto for organization, and Adobe PSE 9 for editing.
Thanks foir any and all help.

Catalog Names ...... Can I rename a catalog once it has been created, or only name it before it is created in the creation dialog box?
You can rename the catalog, but why bother? It doesn't matter what you call it.
By the way, for beginners, the advice is to use only a single catalog for all of your photos. The only time you would need multiple catalogs (and thus specific catalog names) is if you had photos that absolutely needed to be separated, such as personal and work.

  • I have an old user name tht is no longer accessible. I access fierfox through a new user name. I have copied the profile from the old user name. Can I have 2 profiles from which to choose when using firefox in the under the new username?

I have a user name on my computer that was tied in with the domain name of the server at my workplace. I would access Firefox under this user name. I have now changed jobs, and for good and obvious reasons can no longer utilize my previous company associated username.
I have set up a new username on the same computer. When I access Firefox, all of my old bookmarks are gone, because Firefox does not recognize me under the new username as the same person. In the meantime, I have established new bookmarks under the new username.
I have copied my profile from Firefox under my old username. Can I have two profiles under my new username and pick which one I want to use at that time when accessing Firefox?
I am running Windows 7 Professional, with 4 gig ram, Intel i3 CPU, 2.13 GHz, 64 bit operating system, Firefox 7.0.1
    Thank you

    You can not merge accounts.
Apps are tied to the Apple ID used to download them, you can not transfer them.

Section 2a of the Mac OS X licence agreement:

No need to spend $1000 on a new Mac. A Mac Mini can be had for $599.

  • Any clearbox lightbox widget users here? I have a question

I installed the widget on a test web page and it works correctly:
    http://dirtysouthink.com/test/ch1/01_Begin/portfolio.html
When you click the dog tattoo thumbnail, the picture pops up in front of the panel to show a larger picture. You never leave the page.
    HOWEVER:
When I install the same widget, the same way on the main site, when you click on any of the tattoos, the thumbnail targets a new window to show the larger picture. In other words, the user leaves the page to see the bigger picture.
    http://dirtysouthink.com/gallery/jason3.html
I have no clue what is different. I installed the widget the exact same way as I did on the test page. Everything on both installs are in their own directory and are not sharing any of the css or js so there should be no conflicts.
    Any help appreciated

This is the line in clearbox.js
var     CB_ScriptDir='js/clearbox'; // RELATIVE to your html file!
The fix is simple and am posting here just incase someone else is having the same problem.
    I made this change
var     CB_ScriptDir='../js/clearbox'; // RELATIVE to your html file!
    Works like a champ now

You might have lost authorization would be my first guess. I would try re-authorizing first.

  • Getting new Mac for Aperture and have a question...

I totally realize that this is a personal preference with no "wrong" way to do it. However, I would appreciate some thoughts so I can form a better idea of how I will set up an Aperture workflow that will work for me for a long time and how to configure my new iMac.
I use the referenced library workflow and store both my masters and Aperture library on my current internal drive with both backed up to externals. I'm getting a new Mac with the SSD drive for apps and OS (and Aperture library as well). The question is, should I get the mega 2 TB internal HDD along with that SSD for all my masters (which would also include my music and home-made movies)?
My current photo storage adds up to only 130GB right now and grows slowly. I don't even think I would double that in the next year. I realize that if I had, say, a 1.5 TB size Masters library, the the answer would be obvious that I would need to store externally because the iMac HDD isn't big enough. But that isn't my situation.
But since I would be able to fit all my photos on an internal HDD (2TB) to use as referenced, is there a better reason to skip the internal 2TB HDD and just get hooked up with some good, high-speed external system and stick with an internal SSD to just handle the OS, music, and apps? In other words, all my media (photos and movies) would always be stored AND edited from an external drive (I will actually edit on the SSD and then move the referenced files to the external). This means that from now on all new Macs I ever get will only need a moderate sized SSD for OS and apps. I would basicallt forever keep all things media on externals.
I hope this makes sense. Thanks for any help with this.

    jbshanks wrote:
One other thing... the only way for me to get a 1GB VRAM now is to buy the top-of-the-line iMac. That's the issue.
I've seen that also. That's why I added the "If you can wait.." statement.
If you need to purchase before say late October, then the specs you list for the 21" iMac are quite good and the possibility of developers designing GPU threads that require caching in the VRAM may or may not need amounts beyond 512 MB. The fact that Apple offers an upgrade to the 2 GB VRAM video adapter on their high-end machine tells me that they know that the Pro Apps will be able to take advantage of that amount (not that it is necessary for the enthusiast looking to have a good Aperture experience).
SierraDragon has much more experience than I with Aperture, so he may be able to shed some light on this one.
For my part, I run a 17" MacBook Pro (late 2011) which has the 2.5 Ghz i7, 8 GB Apple provided RAM, and the AMD 6770 with 1 GB VRAM. I installed an OWC 480 GB SSD and I am connected to the Apple Thunderbolt Display (because this machine only offers a Thunderbolt port to connect video signals with). Aperture runs fine on my machine (although for some reason cropping takes a couple of seconds now, where it was immediate before the AP 3.3 update). I run Photoshop CS6 and Illustrator CS6 without any issues on this machine, so it is definitely capable of running in a professional environment.
Since your specs call-out a 2.8 Ghz i7, 16+ GB RAM and an SSD, I personally would not hesitate to purchase that machine if you need to purchase soon. I just mentioned the 1 GB VRAM due to your wanting to be able to handle 4+ years of updates to the OS and software. That doesn't mean the 512 GB VRAM won't work great, just that the 1 GB VRAM would be additional insurance (sort of like Apple Care).

  • Help...New User to iPhoto 6...Questions

I just installed 10.4.6 OS and iPhoto 6 on my Powerbook G4. First of all, I have folders on my hard drive with pictures. Can I leave my folders where they are and still work with them in iPhoto by unclicking the option in preferences to not download into iPhoto Library? What are the benefits of doing it this way? To me the pictures are easier to find where they are now...I could never find them in iPhoto's filing hierarchy. Second, I have created a slideshow in iPhoto 2 and when looking at it in iPhoto 6 the pictures seem to be cut off on top and bottom. For instance I took a cruise ship photo and added black banners on top and bottom and put some type in the banners. iPhoto cuts off the banners so just a touch of them show in the slideshow. I've tried changing the aspect ratio, etc. How do I make sure the photos will show on screen? Lastly, I want to copy my slideshow to DVD to show on TV. Can I do this in iPhoto 6 and play thru my regular DVD player? I have a 60" widescreen Sony TV. I assume I select the widescreen aspect ratio. Will all my photos show on the screen then? Any and all help is greatly appreciated! THANKS!!!

Can I leave my folders where they are and still work with them in iPhoto by unclicking the option in preferences to not download into iPhoto Library?
Yes. The benefits would be, as you've mentioned, knowing where the original source files are kept. Easier to make a backup copy of just the source files.
The new file system is a lot like what your folder system is. Each import into iPhoto, be it a single photo or a folder of photos, will be represented by a roll and a folder, with the same name as the roll, inside iPhoto's Originals folder.
There is a downside to the alias system. If you delete a photo from the library the source file does not get deleted, only the alias file representing that file. So you'll have to go to your source files and manually delete them after deleting from the library. It can be a pain. If you forget the only penalty would be no freeing up the space on the HD when you don't need that photo any more. The alias method, with the source files in the Shared folder, is an efficient way to share the same source files with multiple users on the same Mac. See Tutorial #4.
As far as the black banners and iDVD I've answered that in your other post.
    Do you Twango?

  • New user needs help with Email account questions

Good day - I have been a 10-year user of Blackberrys (Curve, Bold, and earlier models). Just received a new Q10 for work. Enterprise Outlook synched up and I am getting all emails, calendar, and contact information as in the past. All good with this. Here are my questions I cannot find answers to anywhere:
    1) How can I insert a "signature" with emails I compose from Q10?
    2) How can I delete all emails on Q10, rather than one at a time?
    3) How do I set the Q10 to only delete from phone and not network. In other words I only want to delete emails from the Q10 device and not my PC.
    Appreciate any help. Thank you,
    Chris

    #3 is even easier
Go to Hub settings, then display and actions and drag down, you'll see the option 'delete'.
    Regards.
    Blackberry! Here, now, forever!

  • I am going to buy a new external hard drive and have some questions first

Although I asked this question several years ago, I would like to ask it again, just if in case technology in general or external hard drives in particular have changed in any significant ways.
I need to replace a 1 terabyte LaCie external hard drive that died on me after a few years.
    1. I am afraid of buying another LaCie. What other brands are reliable? I heard that Western Digital is. Also another brand beginnibg with S (so helpful, I know).
    2. Do I have to look for a drive that is MAC FORMATTED? I vaguely recall this term from years ago. I also remember another term that I was to look out for, but I don't remember what it was. Something like ”chronicled“ but obviously not that.
    3. Should I get more than 1 terabyte? Right now I have an old, old 125 gigabyte LaCie that still lives, but it is so small that it is almost nothing
    4. What do you think about buying external hard drives fron Costco as opposed to from the Apple Store?
    ~L

Ziatron, you wrote ”All you do is open the enclosure and the hard drive plugs in. (done.)“ What enclosure?
This is the enclosure I like, it needs a hard drive to work : http://www.cooldrives.com/ox93saiihadr.html
    But there are many others.
looking at my two dead laCie ext. hard drives and they don't have ”enclosures.“ Just holes in the back to receive the cables.
A hard drive enclosure is a box or case the actual hard drive goes into. Look at the images in the link above. You can see what is inside.
This hard drive goes inside the above cool drive enclosure: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Intellipower-Desktop-WD20EADS/dp/B001RB1TI S/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258862242&sr=8-1
You recommended getting a hard drive with a Firewire connection, but most of the hard drives have USB.
Well maybe, the better drives are Firewire.
    Should that matter to me?
Yes, Firewire is "isochronous", basically meaning that you can pump "clocked" data though it in real time. USB works more like TCPIP, with the data chopped up into packets and later reassembled. (Thus, at a minimum, you have latency, that is, the wait for the data to be "put back together".) Second, the Firewire protocol allows more direct address to memory (including mass storage) with minimal intervention of the CPU.
Is USB a whole lot slower than Firewire if I am transferring materials?
Firewire is faster and _more reliable._
Take a look at the link below, "Build Your Own External Hard Drive". The enclosure I like is easier to use.
    http://www.harmony-central.com/articles/tips/hard_drive/
    http://macs.about.com/od/diyguidesprojects/ss/externalhdcase.htm
Also you need a Mac Pro to use eSATA, with a iMac use the Firewire port.

  • New to smartphones and i have a question about data usage...

i bought my wife a droid 2, we are both new to these phones, ( i still have my ENVY3), but my question is, since she doesnt spend too much time on the web i got her the $15 data package, as i was told it should be enough for most people that are occasional web surfers. my question is though, if she has logged on facebook, since its constanly running and updating, would that mean its constantly using data?
    thanks folks for any help

Yes, anything that updates will use data. This can be turned off when not in use (menu> settings> wireless & networks> mobile networks, uncheck mobile data) or place the power control widget on your homescreen and it can be toggled from there.
