New User - HDMI audio output / Syncing etc...

Hi !
Just ordered my 160gb last night
Still some points I'm not 100% clear about, so...
My set-up Toshiba 32HL86, Harman-Kardon amplifier, AirportXpress, ATV 160.
-I'd like to know if I can use HDMI for video and toslink for audio output as it seems from what I read to be way better for audio. In other words, can I use the HMDI just for video and use the toslink for audio ? Or if I'll have to use component and toslink to output the audio through my Harman-Kardon ?
-I now have all my music on the LaCie 500 gb. What I want to do is sync it to ATV and then unhook it and disable syncing so I don't have to keep it running all the time... That'll work right ?
-Oh, and from what I read it is possible to listen to music and have the screensaver running at the same time right ?
-Am I the only one missing the Alarm/Sleep functions from the iPod ? Seems to me like an essential part. Hoping for a software update on this one... Yes I already said so on the feedback page
Trying to stay ahead and busy while waiting for the UPS man...
TIA ;0
Macbook Pro 15", 2.2 GHz, 2 gb Ram, Black nano, LaCie d2 Quadra 500 gb   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Standing by for Leopard

-I'd like to know if I can use HDMI for video and
toslink for audio output as it seems from what I read
to be way better for audio.
All the audio outputs (analogue/HDMI/optical) work concurrently.
My aTV goes to my plasma via HDMI - the plasma onboard sound is pretty poor - I feed optical to my Yamaha processor - sound is active on both simultaneously.
-I now have all my music on the LaCie 500 gb. What I
want to do is sync it to ATV and then unhook it and
disable syncing so I don't have to keep it running
all the time... That'll work right ?
Should work fine - there have been some conflicting reports on what happens if iTunes is set to sync and the external drive isn't available however.
Haven't tried it but probably the safest would be to sync, pull the AppleTV power cord then delete the AppleTV device from iTunes unless you're going to sync frequently. In that way when AppleTv restarted it just wouldn't find the synced iTunes library and should assume it wasn't powered up.
You can turn sync on/off on the iTunes 'AppleTV device' but I've not tried this to see if it de-registers the AppleTV for syncing and potentially wipes all synced content on AppleTV if it's still connected, or if it's a temporary measure that you can re-enable later.
-Oh, and from what I read it is possible to listen to
music and have the screensaver running at the same
time right ?
Yes. The screensaver uses either synced photos or album art from synced music. It is not a Mac type screensaver, you can set it on/off or to kick in at varying intervals.
-Am I the only one missing the Alarm/Sleep functions
from the iPod ? Seems to me like an essential part.
Hoping for a software update on this one... Yes I
already said so on the feedback page
Might be nice for some rooms/areas but I wouldn't personally regard it as essential.

  • HOW TO: HDMI Audio Output for Zotac Media Box with nVidia ION :)

I've been fighting with my recently purchased Zotac mini-PC for about 2 months now trying to get the HDMI audio output to work. I tried extensive modifications of /etc/asound.conf, different versions of ALSA, and even OSS without success. I've finally succeeded using ALSA and GNOME.
First I installed ALSA according to the Arch wiki.
Next I verified that ALSA detected my sound card(s):
    cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xfe9fc000 irq 28
    1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfcf7c000 irq 18
Next I checked which sound card had the HDMI jack:
    aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC888 Digital [ALC888 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 8: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 9: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
From these two commands, I concluded that I have 2 sound cards (important later on) and that my HDMI sound card was card 1 (NVidia) and that it had 4 possible devices (3,7,8, and 9). To determine which device must be used, I ran the following command for each device (for example, to test card X and device Y, use' plughw:X,Y'):
    aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D plughw:1,7
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
I tried each device and got the best sound from device 7 (8 and 9 also worked, device 3 gave static...).
Now, since I had 2 sound cards, I needed to change the default ALSA device. My default ALSA device was card 0 (the Intel card), which wasn't plugged in, so I needed to change the default card to be card 1 (the HDMI card). After reading the ALSA FAQ, I found that modifying /usr/share/alsa.conf should work, though modifying /etc/asound.conf should have also worked. For whatever reason, I couldn't get my modifications to /etc/asound.conf to work, so I edited /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf. In the  "# defaults" section I replaced the following:
    defaults.ctl.card NVidia
    defaults.pcm.card NVidia
    defaults.pcm.device 7
I opted to use the key NVidia rather than the card number (1) since I've read in numerous places that the card index can change unexpectedly after a reboot/update. The key can be checked with cat /proc/asound/cards as shown above.
After this, I reloaded ALSA (/etc/rc.d/alsa restart) and verified that the sound worked through the default channel:
    aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D default
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
Finally, I rebooted, chose the HDA NVidia (ALSA Mixer) option from gnome-volume-control, and loaded a movie in gnome-mplayer. I was pleased to hear crystal clear sound with functioning volume control
I Hope this helps someone else, I found it very hard to piece together how to diagnose and resolve this problem. Here are some of the resources I found useful:
    Arch Wiki ALSA Page
ALSA FAQ for how to change default sound card
    ALSA FAQ
    XBMC Troubleshooting for ION HDMI

@sprince09 Can you hear sound through HDMI when you run aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D plughw:1,7 ?
(8 and 9 also worked, device 3 gave static...)
    - what does it mean? How do you know that they are working?
What options do you have for snd_hda_intel in /etc/modprobe.d/ ?  Can you play the following:
    mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=1,7 file.wav
BTW, can you hear sound form video files in xine? If yes, can you post your ~/.xine/config ?

  • How do I create a new user, move my old files etc over, and delete old user

This is why I think I need to.
My computer got hit by lightening, and I may have created a new user account through netinfo rather than system preferences /accounts/+user. Mail used to open twice, but no longer. Now, Safari askes me for my keychain password twice, Spotlight can't find a folder on the computer when the search is restricted to folder and computer, though the folder is there and easyfind finds it, and when System Preferences/Spotlight/Privacy has the hard drive icon added, then deleted, Spotlight still does not find anything. (Yes, everything is backed up, on CD, DVD, and online.) Microsoft Tec Support says
"Here is a summary of the key points of the case for your records.
When you contacted us on August 8, you had requested assistance with Microsoft Office 2004, as your installation of the updates was unable to find the correct version of the software to update. After creating a New MAC User, we identified the issue to be with a corrupt MAC User account, and not a Microsoft issue. "
I believe Microsoft. So, creating a new user was easy.
But copying files uses up too much hard drive (movies, music), and may miss keychains, preferences, mail, address book, and documents. Since Spotlight no longer works, who knows what is happening. (Yes, I've repaired persmissions, and disk repair. No change). I'm using up my hard drive trying to move files to the new user. If I share files, or put them into a public folder, then delete the old user, will I still have the old user's files in the new user's account? It is not clear to me what I should be trying to do in order to create a new user, move my old files etc over, and delete old user. Thanks.
My responses will be slow, because I have to drive to town to use the internet. I've ordered a new airport which may take care of that problem. SO be patient.

    Hey -
I need to do the EXACT same thing, but have no idea how. Has anyone out there done this?
My situation is a tad different..this is a new Mac (and I'm a brand new Mac user). Tons of querks occur under my original account (videos won't run, Safari won't support certain plug-ins). I spent 6 hours on the phone w/ 4 different Apple Reps and nobody could fix it. A rep finally looked at my MacBook Pro in person today. He created a new account just to see if that would work and under that new account, everything works perfectly fine (no querks, can view video). He tried switching a million settings in my original account to no avail.
He said to create a new account (as he did) and move my files over to the new account and then go back to the original and delete it. How do you do this?! I can't figure it out! I've got a new account created, but of course it just has the default folders in it w/ the little red icons next to them! Thanks in advance!

  • Issue with HDMI audio output

    Hello everyone,
this is my first post in Arch Linux forum. I am a Newbie but have always managed to work things around with ArchWiki documentation, but I am having an issue I could not solve for some time now.
My HDMI audio output was working fine, but stoped working about a month ago, maybe due to some update. I use the open source ATI driver (xf86-video-ati package), and enabled the kernel parameter radeon.audio=1, like it is documented.
My graphics card is a Radeon HD 3650. I checked for the compatibility of the driver (http://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature/#De … ting_names) and it seems to be ok.
Do you have any suggestion to help me?
    Thank you in advance

  • OS X 10.8.5 mac mini hdmi audio output issue

I am running a 2012 Mac Mini with OS X 10.8.5 and my Mac is set for audio and video output via HDMI to my AV receiver / TV. I have recently noticed that HDMI audio output ceases to function once the computer goes to sleep. A full computer restart is required to resolve the issue which is an inconvenience to say the least.
Or is anyone aware of a simple fix?
All my software is up to date, the HDMI lead and connection works fine for video and audio works fine after a restart so it must surely be a software error. Worked fine until the latest OS X update...
    Grateful for any help!

  • Desperate needing help with HP Pavilion DV7-1450us HDMI audio output

I have tried a lot of different things to get audio output to my tv with no luck. I get video output fine. I notice when right-clicking the speaker on my taskbar there is no option to enable HDMI audio output any help is greatly appreciated as we are waiting to watch a movie <_< thanks.

    Hi Sez,
Try using Recovery Manager to reinstall your AMD Graphics Driver package as this will also reinstall the AMD HDMI Audio driver- the procedure for using recovery manager to reinstall Software and Drivers is detailed in the relevant document on the link below.
    Recovery Manager - Windows 8.
    Recovery Manager - Windows 7
    Recovery Manager - Windows Vista
After the reinstallation has completed, restart the notebook.

  • No HDMI audio output after recent HP update.

Hi, I recently was prompted for an HP sound driver update. After installation, the update seemed to break the audio output from my computer to my television. Before the update, the sounds from the computer would come from the television speakers, but now it defaults back to the laptop speakers. Since the update, there is no longer an option for HDMI audio playback in the sound options of the control panel. Can someone help?
Here is a screenshot of my control panel. As you can see, there is no option for HDMI audio output, even though my HDMI cable is currently plugged in.

    Hi,
Please select the right operating system (32 or 64 bit) for your machine, download and install it:

  • Select HDMI audio output when headphone connectted

In Snow Leopard, I can connect my headphone to Mac Mini, and select HDMI audio output when I want sound from monitor, or select headphone.
But in Lion, I can not select HDMI when headphone is connectted, so I have to plug/unplug headphone very often, quite anoyying...
How can I disable this feature?
    Thanks.

I've just started a thread regarding this exact issue, but in Mountain Lion.  Did you ever solve it?  Or, if you have upgraded to Mountain Lion, do you still experience it?
EDIT: Almost exactly 1 year later you get a response. lol.

  • Turn off HDMI audio output?

    Hi all.
I have my ATV (current gen) hooked up to my TV via HDMI, and hooked up to my home theater system via optical audio cable. The problem is now, sound is being output on both the TV and the home theater system. I can turn the volume on my TV to off, which is a workaround, but it's a bit kludgy. Is there a way to turn off the Apple TV's HDMI audio output or otherwise tell it to just output the video and not audio over HDMI?

I think it's silly that I can't change the audio output, but I appreciate the help.
I'm actually glad that all outputs work simultaneously - something like a PS3 where you have to choose between optical or HDMI can be a real pain if sometimes you just want TV speaker audio (HDMI in my case) and other times you want the full surround experience (optical to hi-fi).
I'd have no qualms about allowing disabling individual outputs but having them active over more than one is better than constantly having to fiddle in Settings menus each time you want the audio from a different device.

  • U530 Touch - No HDMI audio output

    Hello!
I just purchased an Ideapad U530 Touch with Windows 8.1.   It's a nice laptop, however, I can no longer do HDMI cleanly with my Samsung TV.  My old HP Pavilion dv7 (using the same HDMI cable) worked flawlessly with video and audio.  With the U530 - I don't get HDMI audio.
I've googled this and looked on the forums here, but haven't had success so far.  A summary of what I've tried (note - always with HDMI cable attached):
    - Went to "Playback Devices".  Couldn't find anything there but "Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)" and my Soundspot Bluetooth speaker.  Also tried to show disabled devices - but nothing new popped up.
    - Went to Device Manager and noticed "High Definition Audio Device" with a warning that the "device could not start (Code 10)".  Tried Uninstalling the device and reinstalling.  No luck.  Tried uninstalling the driver and scanning for the device, no luck.
    - Tried switching HDMI cables with another one I know works.  No luck
    - Tried updating Realtek drivers with these but still no luck.  No High Definition Audio devices appeared and still have that warning in Device Manager
    - Tried updating the Nvidia 730M drivers with the 3/10/2014 update.  No luck.
I noticed that I have two Display Adapters in the Device Manager - the Intel HD Graphics Family one and the Nvidia GeForce GT 730M driver.  Could there be a conflict with the video drivers or something that isn't telling the audio driver, "hey I'm connected to HDMI - send digital audio this way" ?
Any other thoughts?  I'm going to try going into the BIOS to see if there's anything I can do there.
It's frustrating when you shell out cash for a new laptop and, out of the box, it can't do something your 5 year old laptop did flawlessly.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
    Chris

    hi cmilkosk,
I'm sorry to hear what happened..
The HDMI output connect directly to the Intel HD
Uninstall the Intel Hd Under device Manager and place a check under the prompt "Delete driver software for this device"  restart your computer and install this
Intel Video Driver for 64-bit Windows
    Hope this helps

  • HDMI Audio Output doesn't work in Windows on Retina MBP

When I'm using Windows 7 (with BootCamp) on my Retina MacBook Pro, I like to connect it to my TV using the HDMI out to watch movies. However, when in Windows, it doesn't seem to output the audio to the TV. Instead, it plays through the MacBook's internal speakers. I don't know how to change it, and there doesn't seem to be in option in the Volume Controls in Windows.
Anyone have any success having both video and audio outputted to a TV in Windows 7 on their rMBP? If so, how?

Try downloading and installing bootcamp 3.1 it fixed my sound for me.

  • No HDMI audio output device

    Hi there!
I'm having a problem with my MBP 8,2 (Early 2011) with Mountain Lion.
    I bought this adapter:
    http://www.gebl.net/en/item/378/mini-display-port-male-to-hdmi-female-adapter
which it seems to support audio through HDMI, and this HDMI cable:
    http://www.gebl.net/en/item/1996/high-speed-hdmi-cable-with-ethernet-channel
No problems for what concern the video output, my TV (Panasonic TX-P50GT30E) is automatically recognized and the video is displayed on it.
My problem is that in the sound preferences I see no HDMI device, I can only select the internal speakers!!
On the TV the HDMI audio input is setting to digital so from this side everything is set properly.
I already did the reset of PRAM/NVRAM and SMC but nothing has changed...
    Any ideas??
    Many thanks!

I had a similar problem: bought a Logiix Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable II with audio support for Mb/Mbpro IF the mb/mbpro had thunderbolt. I forgot to check this and had to fiddle around for a while, because I couldn't find anything on my TV screen. I realized my MBPro does not have Thunderbolt.
I went into System Preferences --> Displays and changed those around so I could see my menus and work on my TV screen via my MBPro.
I then could get video to play and show, but no audio through my TV speakers, only my MBPro speakers.
After more fiddling, I realized that movies in Quicktime format (.mov) would play video AND audio, through my TV.
So, I changed my movie to .mov from .avi and voila, it opened in Quicktime and I have audio AND video playing on my TV screen and through my TV speakers.
Really think it should be a helluva lot easier than all that but if this helps you or anyone else, I'm glad. all the best!
