New user; no video from my end of call (modern Win...

A friend and I both attempted an inaugural Skype call last night.  I could see and hear her; she could hear but not see me.  There was a white camera (not video) icon with a white diagonal slash, in a gray box.
I'm running Windows Pro 8.1 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T430 with an integrated webcam.  Skype came preinstalled on my laptop.
After reading some troublehooting suggestions on this site, I uninstalled Skype (online version?) by removing the tile.  (Skype did not show up as a program under Control Panel so I could not uninstall it like I'm used to removing programs.)
Then I downloaded the special version of Skype.  It did not work (can't recall the details).
From Firefox, I installed the desktop version, went into Tools, Options, General, Video Settings.  Again, a white camera (not video) icon with a white diagonal slash, in a gray box.
When I go into the Windows Device Manager, Imaging device, Integrated Camera, General tab, it shows the message, "This device is working properly."
Today I uninstalled the Skype desktop, reinstalled Skype for Windows 8 (again, this appears to be an online version not a desktop version), activated the charms along the right border of my screen, clicked Settings (gear icon), Options, Video, Camera, Integrated Camera . . . that same white camera (not video) icon with a white diagonal slash, in a gray box is present.
I suspect there is some simple setting that I need to change to make my video show up on the screens of people whom I Skype.  I just don't know what it is.
Any more suggestions?  I've followed the suggestions for downloading new drivers, I've restarted my laptop, I've tried some of the other suggestions I found on a list.

I think I found the answer on the Lenovo Support app, Knowledge Base.  I've copied the 10/23/2013 answer and pasted it below:
Some customers have reported that the front camera of Helix is not longer active following an application update, and most recently after updating to Windows 8.1
This grey picture with the Crossed Camera is the privacy mode of the "Lenovo Settings App".
You have to deactivate it in the Settings App under the "Camera" tab.
AnswerSome updates may toggle the front camera to privacy mode.  To check this, open the Lenovo settings app on your desktop, and then click the camera settings
LearningCurve comment: I followed these instructions, the Crossed Camera icon is now gone, and there I am on video, live.  When my friend gets home and is available to answer my Skype video call, that will be the true test.

  • IMac stuck in new user registration video

    Hello, I have an iMac Flat Panel 1Ghz I got off ebay. I don't know the admin username and password and performed the apple recommended startup in Single User using Control-s on startup. This worked fine as I now have reset this iMac to startup on the original Apple registration video. I fill in the new user registration info but it gets stuck or freezes up after I select this computer does not connect to the internet. Is there anything I can do before I buy a new hard drive? Any help is appreciated. I don't have the original system install disks and it has system Tiger 10.4 and it won't boot up from an install disk, it goes directly into the new registration video and gets stuck. Help!!

    Try running repair permissions and check for file integrity in disk utility. You do this from your startup disk. Try resetting the password by using the passswd or try deleting the .applesetupdone file. If this doesn't work, you are going to have to trash the netinfo database. Once you get logged on, you will need to re-access your data.

    Basically, you hold down the command-s key then powering on your machine. The command key has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar. On a PC keyboard, it will be the windows key, I think.
    1) You can change the password on an account. ( Do you know Unix. You are in a Unix single user console. ) The setup commands you need should be listed on the screen. For Mac OS 10.4.11, the commands are:
    # Type the follow two instructions to access the startup disk in read/write:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    # Start up some utility processes that are needed.
    sh /etc/rc
    # You will probably need to press the return key once the system stops typing.

    The root account isn't enabled by default. I am not sure if changing the password on root will enable it.
    2) Get the Mac to set up an additional administrative account. You can then change the password on your old account.
    Start with your computer power off. Hold down command-s. Power on your computer.
    Type in the following:
    The first two commands will depend on your release of Mac OS X. Look at what is typed out in the console to determine the exact format.

  • New User agrement - purchasing from US store while traveling abroad

    While attempting to purchase content today (a bunch of it actually), I was presented with, and had to accept a new user agreement that apparently prohibits me from buying from the US Itunes store while abroad. I am a US resident, with a US account, paid with a US credit card currently on a long term assignment in the UK. Do I now have to purchase all my content from the US store while I am actually in the US? If so, this will really tick me off!

  • HELP New user, importing Music from library ( WMA )

    I am a new user to Itunes ( bit late i know ).
    I need to move my music ( my music folder ) into itunes.
    I have over 40Gb of music. If i import music folder through Itunes using the file > Import folder menu, i am lead to belive that firstly all my music will need to be converted to Mp3. this is not a problem althouigh i am sure it will take a long time.
    My main worry is that when converting the music into itunes the origional my music folder will stay where it is therefore doubling up my music to over 80Gb and therefore will not fit on my hard drives.
    i tried to cut and paste my music files into the itunes music folder within my music although it doesnt appear in my library???
    Any help appreciated!!!!

    Moving files into the iTunes library doesn't comvert them to MP3.
    iTunes can only use unprotected WMA files. If you are trying to add protected WMA songs, they won't go into the iTunes library.
    You can leave all the music files where they are. iTunes will only copy them to the iTunes folder if you have that option checked.

    Remove the plastic screen protector, case, or whatever is interferring with the proximity sensor.
    If that is not the issue, basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • New user - DV import from PC

    I am a new apple user desperately trying to get captured DV footage from his PC into iMovie:
    - I have a great number of avi files which were shot and captured in widescreen (using Studio 9 on a PC) but which QuickTime plays and iMovie imports at a wrong aspect ratio of 4:3 (squeezed)
    - I have looked at various forums whch seem to indicate that this is due to an inability to understand a 16:9 'flag' in the file
    - I have tried to reset the aspect ratio with MPEG Streamclip exporting into DV format at 16:9, but this overstretches the picture (black bars on top and bottom now), and also gets ignored by iMovie which again imports into a squeezed 4:3
    What can I try - I owuld be very grateful for some fairly detailed instructions...? It must be possible to finalise the move from PC to Mac and get those videos into my MacBook! Thanks in advance for your help!

  • How to program shift register to read only when a new user is detected from user?

    Hi,
    I'm currently developing a program for position control in labview. The program is quite simple, whereby user will input the distance that he wants the table to be in the labview program, and labview will send signal to move a motor that will turn a ball screw to move a table horizontally to the targetted position. The criteria is that the profile of the motor depends on the distance it needs to move, whether a two-phase (acceleration and deceleration) or three-phase (acceleration, constant velocity, deceleration) to reach the target position.
    The problem occurs when the user wants to enter a new position (second input) for the table, as the input by user is position the table needs to be but the input required to determine which profile the motor follows depends on the distance that the table will move to get to the targetted position. Therefore, I would need a function to store the input by user temporarily, and recall it only when a new input from user is detected. By this, I would be able to use the difference of the input (input [n+1] - input[n]) and feed it to determine which profile the motor follows and the input by user can be kept as the position he wants the table to travel to (to compare with encoder).
    I thought of using shift registers to do this, but I am not able to make it to perform the deduction ([n+1] - [n]) only when it detects a new input. When i try using shift register, it travels to the targetted position, and one it reaches it will travel back to the original position. For example, when a user input 90, it means the table needs to move to point 90. As the shift register is initialized to 0, it will move to point 90 (90-0 = 90) but upon reaching 90, the shift register sends a signal of 90 (90-90 = 0) and the table returns to it's initial position.
    Is there any way that I can delay the reading of shift register only when a new input is detected or is there another way for me to achieve what i want?

    I've managed to get what I needed by using a shift register + event structure as suggested by Adnan. However, I face another problem after implementing SR+event. I've attached two files, first the original program and second the updated program using SR + event. (it's only the jpg file as I've forgotten to save the labview program, will upload the program by tomorrow.
    In the original program, I have an elapsed time that is able to run continuously when I run the program. In the updated program, my elapsed time don't seem to run continuously when I run the program (as shown by elapsed time indicator). I need the elapsed time to run continuously as a input to calculate my motor profile.
    I suppose this is caused by the introduction of the event structure, will adding a case structure to wrap the event structure solve the problem or is there another way to get pass this. Appreciate if someone could drop me a pointer or two.

    Is this BAPI Called in another task? Otherwise, you should be able to debug it like any other Function module in foreground.

  • Is the iPad slow - a thought from a new user

    just sitting here at a Starbucks with my new iPad and seeing it do everything internet related at a SNAILS PACE. Not fun.
    Attempting to download Pages.app it just crawls. I'll have to come back here the next seven nites in a row to complete things.
    Would love to watch all my .mov files but every single one has to be transcoded to iPad compatible format. I should just be able to drag copy them to iTunes and have it handle the recode but thats not possible at this time. Hello QTP7 and manually exporting every one of them. Further once I get all 55 videos recoded - oh joy at the dog-slow USB2.0 connector in getting those onto this video hungry device.
    And that brings up the basic pragmatic problem with any iPad: its a video racehorse. Once you finally get a video playing on this thing it is MAGIC. Yes, 10 inches of ultra gorgeous lightweight screen space, playing your very interesting vid. NICE.
    But wifi/3G/usb just completely fail to deliver on video. Thats why its not used in the video editing world, these protocols are just too slow. FCP editors use Firewire. So why did these get incorporated into the iPad ? Who knows, makes no sense.
    You like waiting ? Me either, and Im doing alot of this now....
    Most all of the things I want to do with my new iPad:
    watching videos from YouTube
    watching my own iPad converted videos that I never bothered to watch on my Mac laptop
    watching Netflix
    watching PBS's excellent series
    watching Nat Geo
    watching Comedy Central
    watching DVD's from my favorite Cinefile video store
    are blocked because the tiny straw usb/3g/wifi connections are so bandwidth limited as to cause a sane person to weep.
    I want to believe, but it aint happening. Perhaps wait for iPad 2.0 I guess.

    Well, that'll be because your particular .mov files use a different codec to the ones the iPad supports. Try exporting your .mov files in a more universal format.

    Use Handbrake which can batch encode as many videos as you want to iPad format.
    But wifi/3G/usb just completely fail to deliver on video.
    You're up against the technical limitations of those transfer methods. Wireless is never as fast as wired. 3G is never as fast as WiFi. Maybe in a few years, the technical boffins will have invented even faster wireless standards.
    Saying that though... I've never had any issues streaming movies to my iPad over my local network or a decent internet connection.
    All of the things you list work fine on my iPad - but then again I'm using a decent internet connection - not sharing a free one at a coffee shop which is probably limited in speed anyway and is shared with everyone else in the coffee shop..

    im planning to buy an iPod Touch in the coming days and this will be the first time ill be using the iTunes. (ive been using Sonicstage for my Sony mp3 walkman eversince). if i say i have an mp3 file downloaded from a site other than iTunes store would iTunes automatically "recognise" the song? how do i search for the song/album cover/picture so it would appear on my iPod Touch? and can it also recognise "any" downloaded MP4 video?

    You shouldn't have any problems - itunes will play mp3 files fine and it's pretty easy to add all your files in.
    Before you buy your new ipod, I would advise you to go ahead and download itunes now and start using it. Also you should be aware that quite a few windows users are having problems with accessing the store or are having other installation problems (check the forums for examples). You have to use itunes 7.4 with the new ipods, and a lot of people have gotten the new ipod, updated itunes and then not been able to download new music or videos from the store! But you don't have to buy music through the store if you don't want to.
    When you do download itunes, I think the very first time it will ask you if you want it to search your computer for music files. If not, you can manually add folders of music to itunes - for example, if all your music is in your 'my music' folder in itunes go to File>Add folder to library, highlight 'my music' and it will automatically add all your music in. When you download other mp3 files you can use File>add file to add individual songs, or just open them with itunes and it will add them to your library.
    Mp3 files don't need any reformatting for itunes; if you have unprotected wma files, like you ripped a CD on windows media player, itunes automatically converts them (I think to aac, which shows up as .m4a). itunes cannot read protected wma files, however. I can't answer your question about videos, but i think itunes could read them - try it and see if it works!
    Another thing to be aware of is that music bought from the itunes store is usually in protected aac format, and I don't think you can play that on your sony. Also, when you install itunes it automatically makes itself the default audio and video player unless you uncheck the box during installation - so keep that in mind.
    After you get itunes up you can 'sync' all your music onto your ipod; if you have more music than will fit on the ipod you can create playlists and sync all or some playlists on your ipod, so it's up to you what you want to put on it.
    also - I think apple's online pages aren't that great for info, but the itunes help is a little better.

    I am working for a parent company and would like to use a

    they said they cannot give it to me but would allow me to use it if

    Technically, it depends on the source material and how it's being broadcast. 
    If it's streamed on dedicated streaming servers like YouTube or Vimeo, you'll likely need a script to embed into your document.
    If it's a progressive download, you need a link to the FLV and you can sometimes apply external URL to your own Flash Player.  In DW, Insert Media > Flash > Progressive Download, etc...   Some site owners might not appreciate your site users downloading  videos from their servers.  Tread carefully here.
    If the source server has decent security, you might not be able to play their media from your domain.  In that case, you would have to use a Flash Grabber to download their FLV files and host them on your own domain. 
    The simplest answer is to contact the other site owners.

  • Multiple PDF outputs from front-end

    I am working on a report that always shows one page per customer. When user generates report from front-end interface, this will call BI Publisher report and report shows entire customers information in one PDF (with X pages for X customers). Users want to see X number of PDF documents with each PDF having 1 page for customer when this report is invoked on demand from a front-end application. Is this possible in BI Publisher?
    I know there is bursting functionality, but it is applicable to scheduled jobs.
    Please could some one help me to figure out if this is possbile in BI Publisher or not.
