New user not logging in

I just tried to add my daughter as a user on my computer. It's not the first time I've done it, but on a different computer. I log out, log her in, and then I just get the little blue dot in the upper right corner and it won't go any further. Suggestions?
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   also have a G4 eMac and a G3 Powerbook

Just letting you know that you are not alone. We have also had many times where the login account is ok and working fine and then we get the blue screen of death and the little spotlight magnifier showing in the upper right corner. Very frustrating. The main account never seems to be affected. To get around this, you can create multiple accounts. Eventually one of them will let you login. But be aware of the blue screen eventually.

  • New Users Not Appearing On Login List - Help!

    Hello Mac geniuses,
    I run a 10.3.9 network in an elementary school, and I since returning from summer vacation I have had problems with many of my client eMacs not displaying the names of users I have added in WGM. These eMacs are also still displaying the names of accounts I have deleted.
    If anyone is kind enough to help a stranger, I have copied below the transcripts of my email exchanges with an Apple tech, in my struggle to get my school functioning again. (I have placed them in the correct order so the 1st email is on top and the last on bottom. The tech's name is John and I am using "Jon" to make it slightly less confusing!).
    My very grateful thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

    I tried deleting the MCX cache via NetInfoManager on the clients, and even restarted the server, but it has not affected several machines.
    Any advice?

    When working with NetInfo, which we are and hope to have some more articles on in the near future, it is important to know
    how to back up to a previous version of your database.
    1. First, the most brutal way of recovering from a nonfunctional database.
    Boot into single user mode by holding down the "s" key while starting up. Follow the handy instructions Apple gives you at the end of the startup sequence and run fsck. Then mount the system root disk as read/write with:
    mount -uw /
    Now you can get on with recreating your database in a very brutal way. Remove your current database with:
    rm -rf /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb
    Now remove the file that prevents the Setup Assistant from running:
    m /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    And now reboot to get things rolling.
    reboot
    This will cause the Setup Assistant to launch, complete with music and bouncing blue blobs. If you remember which account you set up first when you last saw this screen, set up that account now. Otherwise, go with whatever you want for your first
    Administrator account. If you match it up with the original Administrator account, all of your permissions should be groovy.
    Otherwise, get familiar with chown and chmod and you will be able to set things right.
    The above method is rather draconian and isn't for times when you need to replace a complicated NetInfo setup, but should work perfectly well for an essentially single user machine. However that probably rules out most Servers.

    Hi John,
    I performed that protocol, but even that didn't fix the problem!
    I know I've heard someone once suggest (in a moment of resignation) that I just use the blank name and password fields at login, but this is not really an option in elementary school. I only have 478 users in WGM, so I can't believe that would be too taxing for OS X Server!
    Thanks again for your thoughts on this.

    John, we're talking about 23 computers here - re-imaging is not an option for me alone unless I have some technical assistance (I don't know how to 'ghost' images across a network).
    I was managing the users by Groups though I did have a list of the computers called "lab computers". I just noticed that when I try accessing the Computers tab in WGM (whether on my teacher's station or on the server itself) I get the same error message:

    The list of users is a plist file and should be at at /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist on the clients. See this thread for more information:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2368769&#2368769
    If you've got a good plist from a client that sees the right users, you should be able to copy it over. If not, try backing up the file from one client and then deleting it and restarting.

  • New users not showing up while trying to set folder permission settings

    Server 2012
    This is a new virtual domain server and file server in a starwind cluster, I just started migrating users last week.
     This last weekend (two days ago) the cluster crashed while doing windows updates on this server. I have been unable to get it to download any updates since without crashing, not sure if that is related to this issue somehow.
    I added some new users today and got them all logged in and their data transferred over. good. But then I went to this shared folder that everyone has a mapped drive too and tried to add them in the security tab of a sub folder but their accounts will not show
    up when I search for them. Any account I added previously to last weekend  show up, students, mine, etc.
    even if I select the exact OU the accounts are located in, even if I type their whole name and domain. In AD the accounts are there.
    If I log into the backup domain controller Their accounts show up there while in a folder security settings tab. They are listed in active directory on both domain controllers.
    I have exhausted myself on Google search.
    What the heck did I break?
    Maybe I should run
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
    Not sure if I will lose any data doing that or what the repercussions would be..

  • AD new user not populated in OID

    Hi,
    When I create a new user in AD, it is not getting populated in OID. Though when I modify some attrubutes for the existing user, it gets sync with OID.

    ActiveChgImp is the only profile which is enabled.

    1) Check that the new user created in AD is in the containers to be SYNC to OID, the mapping rules are defined in the session of DomainRules in ActiveChgImp.map file. This may be the cause, it happened to us two years ago.
    2) check log file at $ORACLE_HOME/ldap/odi/log/ActiveChgImp.trc + ActiveChgImp.aud

  • CryptAcquireContext failing with ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND (2L) when user not logged on Windows 8.1

    I am having a hard time migrating a C++ CryptoAPI-based application that currently runs on Windows Server 2008 to Windows 8.1. The scenario is:
    This application is eventually triggered by WatchDog.exe, which in its turn is triggered when the computer is started by Windows' Task Scheduler.
    Task Scheduler uses the following rules to start the WatchDog.exe:
    A Administrator User Account;
    Run Whether user is logged on or not;
    UNCHECKED: Do not store password. The task will only have access to local resources;
    Run with Highest Privileges;
    Configure for Win 8.1;
    Triggered at system startup.
    The server sits there, nobody logged, until in a given scenario WatchDog.exe starts the application. Application log confirms that the owner of the process (GetUserName)
    is the very same user Task Scheduler used to trigger WatchDog.exe.
    It turns out that this application works fine in Windows Server 2008, but in windows 8.1 a call to CryptAcquireContext fails
    with return code ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND (2L). The odd thing is that the application will NOT fail if, when started, the user is physically logged
    on the machine, although it was not the user who started the application manually.
    I took a look at the documentation and
    found:
    "The profile of the user is not loaded and cannot be found. This happens when the application impersonates a user, for example, the IUSR_ComputerName account."
    I had never heard of impersonification, so I made a research and found the APIs LogonUser,ImpersonateLoggedOnUser and RevertToSelf.
    I then updated the application in this way:
    HANDLE hToken;
    if (! LogonUser(L"admin", L".", L"XXXXXXXX", LOGON32_LOGON_BATCH, LOGON32_PROVIDER_DEFAULT, &hToken))
    logger->log (_T("Error logging on."));
    else
    logger->log (PMLOG_LEVEL_TRACE, _T("Logged on."));
    if (! ImpersonateLoggedOnUser(hToken))
    logger->log (_T("Error impersonating."));
    else
    logger->log (_T("Impersonated."));
    err = XXXXXXXXX(); // calls function which will execute CryptAcquireContext
    if (! RevertToSelf())
    logger->log (_T("Error reverting."));
    else
    logger->log (_T("Reverted."));
    Excerpt with the call to CryptAcquireContext:
    // Get the handle to the default provider.
    if(! CryptAcquireContext(&hCryptProv, cryptContainerName, MS_ENHANCED_PROV, PROV_RSA_FULL, 0))
    DWORD e = GetLastError();
    _stprintf_s (logMsg, 1000, _T("Error %ld acquiring cryptographic provider."), e);
    cRSALogger->log (logMsg);
    return ERR_CCRYPT_NO_KEY_CONTAINER;
    cRSALogger->log (_T("Cryptographic provider acquired."));
    As the result, I got the log:
    [2015/01/08 20:53:25-TRACE] Logged on.
    [2015/01/08 20:53:25-TRACE] Impersonated.
    [2015/01/08 20:53:26-ERROR] Error 2 acquiring cryptographic provider.
    [2015/01/08 20:53:26-TRACE] Reverted.
    That seems to show that impersonation is working properly, but still I get Error 2 (ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) on CryptAcquireContext.
    Summary:
    On Windows Server 2008, the very same application runs properly even without the calls to LogonUser/Impersonate/Revert.
    On Windows 8.1, the application, with or without the calls to LogonUser/Impersonate/Revert, will only work properly if the user is logged on (which
    is not acceptable).
    Any thoughts where I can run to in order to get this working on windows 8.1?
    Thank in advance,
    Dan

    There are a couple of issues.
    Based on the parameters being used in CryptAcquireContext().  A profile needs to be loaded and your app has to be running as the same user who created the keyset. (which is why it works when a user is logged on Windows 8.1) Also, impersonation
    does not load your user profile, you need to call LoadUserProfile().  It seems like you should be using a machine keyset for your scenario if you want to do this when nobody is logged on.
    Take a look at the following KB article for more information.

  • Picture not shown in report when user not logged on.

    Scenario (also described in thread: http://technet.oracle.com:89/ubb/Forum81/HTML/000726.html)
    I create a table mypics:
    title varchar2(100), mypic varchar2(100). I create a Portal form that uses file upload on mypic. The form will put the picture into some table...
    I then create a report with the following sql:
    select title,
    '[IMG SRC="'| | decode(MYPIC, '', PORTAL30.wwctx_api.get_image_path | | 'noimg.jpg',
    owa_util.get_cgi_env('DOC_ACCESS_PATH') | | '/' | | MYPIC) | |'"]' MYPIC
    from SCOTT.mypics
    (replace [] with <>)
    The report do not show the picture if the report is added as a component in a content area, and the user is not logged on.
    (Workarounds are to use portal pages instead i think).
    But still, the problem probably has to do with some granting ?
    Terje.

    Hi,
    If this is the case, then first of all you have to make your objects language dependant. Then load the data for English (If you have), German etc with 0LANGU as the key of the object.
    Then only you can view the descriptions/names/texts etc. in the various languages.
    Hope this helps.

  • EAP-TLS and getting a new user to log in on a wireless network

    I have setup EAP-TLS using AP1232 + ACS + CA + Active Directory + some wireless client machines. Works fine.
    My issue is when I have a new user, who has never logged onto the client workstation. I know that if I attach the workstation to a wired network and have the user login, request a cert, issue it, and install it, the wireless will work once I have the wired connection disabled and wireless enabled. However, that kinda defeats the purpose of a WLAN.
    How can I get my new users in? After all, getting associated to the AP depends on the user cert, which depends on the ability to get to the network in the first place to request/install a cert.
    After further reading and research, I believe that my delima will be fixed by configuring EAP-TLS Machine Authentication. What I'd like to know is whether the CA in this scenario MUST be an Enterprise Root CA or can it be a Standalone CA?
    Paras

    check the below link and read server requirements.
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814394
    The stanalone ca needs to be trusted by AD
    http://groups.google.co.uk/group/microsoft.public.win2000.security/browse_thread/thread/1cf098c0dfa97ca0/b964dd05c12fd3fb?lnk=st&q=eap-tls+certificates+standalone+root&rnum=2&hl=en#b964dd05c12fd3fb
    What windows are you using? The default behaviour of windows is it do user authentication.You would need to play with registry to make systems to do only machine authentication.
    You would need connectivity when you want install the ca certificate, or else allow open authentication on the access point to have the connectivity and once the certificates are installed disable it.

  • Session in Progress - user not logged in.

    I show a user session in EAS with a status of "in progress" for a spreadsheet operation. User claims to not being logged in to Essbase and not to have initiated a worksheet retrieval. This happened before to this same user id and I let their session continue overnight and it eventually stopped on its own. As before, user said they were not logged in. Has anyone seen this before? I hesitate to "force kill" the session as it probably will create a "terminating" status and hang up the entire application.
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Not saying this is what you are seeing, but this happened when a user had embedded their id into a spreadsheet macro. It turned out that someone else had gotten hold of the spreadsheet some months later and was running stuff in Essbase without even knowing it.
    Try checking the IP address in the EAS sessions and see if the ip matches the persons computer.

    I had this problem after exposing my iphone to steam from the shower (don't ask why). Apparently, my iphone received "water damage" as indicated by the indicators after a visit to the genius bar. I just blew out the bottom of my iphone with air and over time the problem just went away. There's no way water touched the ports though so it seems the water damage indicator is a bit too sensitive.
    Basically, if it the dock connector on your iphone gets wet/steamy/dirty then it can start acting up. Clean it like jagamac said and see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, I would suggest trying a different charger. If the problem persists (using a geniune apple charger), then it's probably best to visit the genius bar.

  • Can't seem to create new users and log in

    Please help. I'm almost sure that this has something to do with a game or other download that my teenager has done. About three weeks ago, she was unable to fully log into her user. She would type in her password, and then screen would change to the background she picked, and then the pointer would turn into the spinning color wheel (which my children now call The Spinning Wheel of Death), and that's it. No dock. No menu at the top. Forever spinning. It then somehow migrated to my oldest son's user, and he had the same problem. (Which leads me to believe that he was playing the same game she was and it corrupted something somehow.) My user, my husband's user and my youngest child's user are perfectly fine. I deleted their user accounts and tried to create new ones. They can be created, but when we try to log them in, The Spinning Wheel of Death occurs. I've tried using different names for the accounts, and get the same result every time. I've run Disk Utility and it repaired lots of different permissions, but it doesn't change what happens when we try to log in. We've had this computer for nearly two years, and so there is no warranty on it anymore. Help!

    HI,
    Back up all your important data on all accounts and perform either an Archive & Install or Erase and Install, instructions here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545
    First, boot from your install disc and run Disk Utility in case there are errors on the startup disk.
    Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
    Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
    Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
    Select First Aid in the Main panel.
    *(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
    Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
    If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
    If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
    When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
    Select your start up disk and click Restart
    While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
