New user of FCP

I am new to FCP and the Mac computer. I was on PC for 24 years and finally made the leap yippee!!
I wanted to know oif someone can point me to or tell me detailed steps of getting my Ex1r, 1920x1080p 30fps excam codec footqage into Final Cut. I used usb to get my footage into the puter. But I also have the Blackmagic design intensity pro capture card which has HDMI input, and my Sony EX1r has HDMI output but I havent tried to input footage that way yet.
Thanks all,
marcus

welcome to the world of mac & FCP!
heres the way I ingest XDCam footage off an EX3. All your media should be kept on external drives by the way.
1.create folder on media drive with todays date or card no.
2.insert card into pcmcia slot (you'll need a reader on newer mac book pro's or connect cam via usb - never done it this way myself)
3.copy entire contents of card (BPAV folder) into folder on media drive, eject card when done.
4.open FCP and create bin with same name as folder, set this as your logging bin
5.open log & transfer, add volume (folder) you've just created
6.log rushes here if you want
7. hit add selection to queue
your rushes will now appear in your selected bin, ready for use.
bear in mind that xdcam codec has its pitfalls, namely if you mix formats in the timeline you will likely get lots of crashes and stalls so either try and keep it all seperate or transcode to another format as you wish.
There is plenty of reading both in manuals and on the web about FCP and xdcam workflows so I would take your time and do some solid research before getting started on a serious project, but that should get you going. this site is a fantastic resource with loads of useful tips to keep you on track.
Have fun and welcome again
cheers

  • New user to FCP

I will be a new user to Final Cut Pro in the very near future using a iMac 27" quad core i7, 8GB ram, ATI Radeon HD4850 512mb. Order has been placed for the machine and just waiting to receive it.
I'm not new to editing. I'm currently using PC based Adobe Premier Pro. I'm tired of all the constant problems with the PC and switched to Mac. I know Mac has its issues and hope theirs is not like what I currently experience.
A few questions for the FCP on the forum.
    1. I currently use VHS or a DVD player and firewire it into my system via a Canopus for capturing. *What means are ya'll using for capturing your video?*
    2. I have to capture video anywhere from 15 minutes to 5 hours plus in length. *Are there any issues I need to know on capturing long recordings?*
    3. At times I need to add a time code on the main screen so others that review the DVD can tell me where they want a cut made. The person I spoke with on the phone at Apple could not tell me if this was available or not. (I might not have explained it well enough.) *Is it possible to add a visible time code generator on screen?*
    4. There are times I need to add subtitles to some interviews that are being edited. I found if the interview is short, less than an hour, I can put the video in Adobe Flash Pro and add subtitles fairly easy and it's easy to revise if needed. I found one company, Closed Captioning & Subtitling Software & Services, (http://www.cpcweb.com/)that has software for the Mac. Though very expensive, $4000, it may do what I need it to do. However, I will not be buying it. *Do any of you have a personal system you use for subtitling or know of available software?*
    5. I have seen a Logic keyboard I'm thinking about getting, http://www.logickeyboard.com/shop/pro-line-apple-1630p.html. Since I completely new to the Mac, I thought this would help. *Would this be a good investment? Are any of you using this or something similar?*
    Comments are appreciated.

    a iMac 27" quad core i7, 8GB ram, ATI Radeon HD4850 512mb.
I saw one of those today at my local reseller. You know what? It looks amazing. It looks beautiful.
I wouldn't consider it for video editng.
Now, you are shocked and surprised.
    Listen.
The iMac cannot be expanded beyond it's built in USB and FireWire connections.
What video format do you want to edit?
Can FireWire provide enough speed to work with your chosen video format?
Do you have plans to make a paying gig out of your video editing career or is this just for fun?
    To answer your questions:
*What means are ya'll using for capturing your video?* There are a lot of folks here working in different formats, from DV to RED and some are working with digital imtermediates from film sources. Sky's the limit.
You need to elaborate on Q2. Give us specifics to work with.
3.Is it possible to add a visible time code generator on screen?
Yes it is. Timecode Reader will give you source TC Generator fron your clips. For a custom display time on the output -that's there too
4.Do any of you have a personal system you use for subtitling or know of available software?
Dozens, be specific. Do you want hard coded or subs that the viewer can turn on and off?
    5. I have seen a Logic keyboard...
Stop being a *****. Learn the [keyboard shortcuts|http://worldwide-studios.com/Worldwide_Studios/Resources.html].
Now. stop messing about with that iMac, save up for a few months more and get yourself an expandable Mac Pro setup.
Welcome to the forums by the way. You are going to love it here and I look forward to when you start contributing yourself.

  • Final Cut Pro 7 initial setup settings (DSLR user) new user

    Hello Guys,
I just bought Final Cut Pro 7 and installed it. Can anyone give me some tips on how to do an initial setup or how I should set up my Final Cut Pro. Scratch disk, ext.
How can I optimize it for HD DSLR? I mainly shoot with Canon 5d and Canon7d DSLR with 24frames per second and I will importing and editing and capturing footage from these DSLR, how should I set the preferences and settings be on my final cut pro 7 best optimal use for these cameras.
I also heard that I should be converting all the videos to pro res 422 before editing, so It can render faster or something like that. Can some please explain that pro res conversion part.
I am also a new user, I have little knowledge on fcp, so please bare with my newbie questions. Thanks so much.

Thanks Nick for the links, I'm actually a video guy, been doing corporate av video for concerts, professional sports, broadway theatre, and corporate evens, and also do my own videography on the side. But I am more of a shooter, I have used FCP in the past awhile back but I had a partner that did all of the editing. But I have used it FCP in the past, can't remember much though.
Does anyone know which apple pro res format is best for DSLR editing. I see there is 422, 422(proxy), 422(HQ), 422(LT) and 4444.

  • I have installed the new version of FCP 10.2 on my iMac and MBA and both instalments are crashing on launch. I have tried deleting preferences and have reinstalled FCPX on both machines. Any idea what the problem may be and how to resolve it?

FCP 10.2 on my iMac and MBA are crashing on launch

I had the same crash type as Pajero Fan and Kidago, except my machine is a iMac mid-2011 12GB RAM, AMD Radeon 6770M, Yosemite 10.10.3 fresh install and FCP 10.2. My crash was very similar to the AMDRadeon but mine is with the AMDRadeonX3000GLDriver.bundle.

I created a new user account, and FCP 10.2 launched and works fine. However, using 3D Text gives an FCP warning that my hardware is not capable of doing 3D text.
Back as my original user account, I did a Repair permissions and found a TON of group/user issues such as,
User differs on “System/Library/Extensions/AMDRadeonX3000GLDriver.bundle/Contents/PkgInfo”; should be 0; user is 502.
Group differs on “System/Library/Extensions/AMDRadeonX3000GLDriver.bundle/Contents/PkgInfo”; should be 0; group is 20.
(BTW, user 502 is the UNIX name for the new user account I created.)
    That DIDN'T fix it.
Using Find Any File I was able to delete the "Layouts" folder, and FCP launches ok, but any attempt to start a new project, import a file, results in a crash. Maybe related to the 3D text feature.

  • Learning Shake. Video tutorial advice from a new user...

I am brand new to Shake and compositing. I've used Final Cut Pro for a few years and done simple compositing after doing FCP tutorials. Shake is tougher to learn thank FCP, so I've purchased some videos from Gnomon workshop and cmiVFX. I wouldn't consider this a formal review, but some beginning advice for newbies like me...
    1. First, do the tutorials in the manual that come with Shake. They start off simple, and one could probably learn almost everything you need for general use of Shake (from a newbie, don't forget).
    2. This excellent book... Apple Pro Training Series : Shake 4 (2nd Edition) (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0321256093/103-0705051-1275827?colid=1T8L28XGM0 5IS&coliid=I3MUD718LP9EP9&n=283155) will get you started as well. It comes with a DVD full of material to work with as well. Good money invested here.
When you're ready to start spending more money....
    3. cmiVFX.com has a number of free tutorials http://www.cmivfx.com/tutorials.asp, some of them for Shake, some for other compositing programs. Check them out for inspiration and for technique examples. I purchased the Shake Training Series 1 Kit (http://www.cmivfx.com/productshakekit.asp) which was quite good. They lead you through a series of examples, showing how some of the major functions operate and how to start working with all those nodes. I had previously purchased Combustion 4, and cmiVFX's video for Sky Replacement for combustion was excellent. They also make one for Shake, and I wish I would have purchase that one instead, although I've never seen it. The downside on this video series is that it runs as a regular DVD, and you need DVD Player, or a typical DVD player to view them. So, these are low-res videos (TV resolution), and not Quicktime files on disc.
    4. The Gnomon Workshop (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/index.html) has some excellent video tutorials. They're pretty technical, and not a good place to start unless you've got a background in visual effects or other compositing software. I think they're great, but I think the new user of Shake/compositing software should work on numbers 1-3 above. Don't get me wrong, this is a great resource, which would be in keeping with the image Gnomon Workshop gives of being an in-depth resource for serious computer graphics artists. I suspect the level of teaching in these videos would satisfy the higher level and more advanced users. These videos are Quicktime format, high resolution and very well done. Visual Effects Compositing Fundamentals (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/gja01.html) is US$49 for 4 hours of instruction. Great value for money. I've also found Shake: Color Correction and Layers US$59 (3 hours) (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/mli02.html) very good, as was Shake: Effective Keying Techniques US$59 (3 hours) (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/mli03.html).
Personally, I'd like to see some more video tutorials of some experienced users showing how they get things done. Maybe now's the time???

I asked a couple of the Shake users I know (like Capt Mench), if they would be able to for the site http://www.proapptips.com
they are working on them but they are a little on the busy side at the moment.
I will post when they are up

  • Dropped frames on playback doesn't replicate in a new user account

I have been using FCP 4.5 for some time without any problems. Recently I have not been able to play clips in the Timeline without an immediate error message of dropped frames during playback. If I double-click the clip it will play in the Viewer perfectly. This will happen even if the only sequence open contains a single audio track.
I tried the same thing in a new user account and everything worked as it should, so the problem appears to be a conflict confined to my original account. I've tried moving prefs files for FCP and Quicktime but no joy. All source material is on a separate internal drive to the OS & project files.
    Any ideas?

  • Need Help with New User

I have recently had the problem where my I am unable to play any quicktime video off the internet. This includes movie trailers and itunes music video previews. Quicktime works fine with all other videos off my mac. The only solution that I found was that it works if I login as a different user.
So my question is how can I create a new user that will EXACTLY mirror my current user settings and folders?
    Please help.
    Lawrence

Well I only get the error message when I try to run video off the itunes music store or off safari. itunes videos i purchase i am then able to view and can view all other videos already saved locally. When trying to play online videos the program (safari and itunes) simply closes and i get the message the the program unexpectetly quit. this is the report that shows when i ask for more details:

  • How can I Import CA Certificate into a new user profile when it's created

I need to deploy a CA Root Certificate to new firefox user profile when it is created in windows. I Seen somewhere that you could place a working copy of cert8.db in %programfiles%\firefox-installation-folder\defaults\profile and this would get added when a new firefox profile is created. However, the profile directory doesn't exist in the defaults folder and when I created it this method still didn't work.
Is there a way to get firefox to create new profiles with preconfigured Certificates?
Right now when new users open firefox for first time it is unable to connect to any SSL sites through our proxy server until the user adds the proxies ca certificate or it gets added later via logon script (at next user logon).

Update... For anyone looking for a similar solution:
I ended up adding more to my logon script I have it check for a user's mozilla profile first and if not found it will use command line "firefox.exe -createprofile default" to make one. After that I just copy a working cert8.db to that new profile. Then when the user opens firefox for first time, it will detect this new profile, and it will load it along with the correct CA Certs intact...
Also, for existing profiles my script just uses nss certutil to add my proxy CA Certificate to the users profile cert8db.

  • Error while creating new user in Oracle 11i EBS

I am getting following error while creating new user. How solve this issue?
“Unable to load java class % specified profile option SIGNON_PASSWORD_CUSTOM. Please verify that the class exists and that it implements the java interface oracle.apps.fnd.security.PasswordValidation”.

Following is the text from Note for Custom Password Validation logic:
Customers who wish to use their own password validation logic may do
so by writing their own Java classes that implement the
      oracle.apps.fnd.security.PasswordValidation Java interface.  The
interface requires 3 methods to be implemented:
      1) public boolean validate(String user, String password)
        - This method takes a username and password, and then returns true
or false, indicating whether the user's password is valid or invalid,
      respectively.
      2) public String getErrorStackMessageName()
        - This method returns the name of the message to display when the
user's password is deemed invalid (i.e., the validate() method returns
      false).
      3) public String getErrorStackApplicationName()
        - This method returns the application shortname for the
      aforementioned error message.
After writing the Java class to perform customized password
validation, the customer must then set the value of the profile option
SIGNON_PASSWORD_CUSTOM to be the full name of the class.  If, for
example, the name of the Java class is
oracle.apps.fnd.security.AppsPasswordValidation, then the value of the
      SIGNON_PASSWORD_CUSTOM profile option must be
      oracle.apps.fnd.security.AppsPasswordValidation.  Note that AOL/J
will attempt to load this class dynamically.  Hence it is necessary to
make the class accessible by AOL/J.  This means that in Forms, the
class must first be loaded into the database using the loadjava
      command.

    Hi Jason
There is a typo in the documentation, the name of the procedure is:
    executeNativeUpdateQuery
By the way, you can get the full procedure list by entering the following query in the administrator
    SELECT * FROM leselect.system.procedures
    Hope this helps,
    Fred

  • Error in creating a new user in j2ee 14 admin console

    Hi,
I am getting the following error while trying to create a new user using the j2ee 1.4 admin console.:
A "com.sun.enterprise.tools.guiframework.exception.FrameworkError" was caught. The message from the exception: "Unable to get View for ViewDescriptor 'fileUsers'"
The root cause is "java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 0"
    Plz proide me with solutions
    Regads,
    Tanmoy

This problem wil happen only if you've created a user with an empty group id, and this issue is fixed for FCS .
You have two workarounds to use adminGUI for managing users:
    1. Use CLI, and create a group id to this user, then you can use adminGUI.
    2. Other option is remove the empty group id user from domain.xml, and then you can come back to adminGUI to create the user with some group id. I prefer the 1st option.

Now the weird thing is this. He got this error, and the user WAS STILL added to our user lists. This doesn't happen all the time, as in the logs he created a user minutes before this one and he did not receive any errors.
This is just something that we do not want to have happen. Does anyone have any idea of what may have caused this and what I can do to prevent this from happening again.
I cannot find any info on this BEA-423137 error anywhere on the site and I was wondering if someone would be able to help me out.
              Thanks,
              Garret

Nevermind everyone. I figured out that I can do a manual change and just add the user to one of the groups and everything should be ok. Something happened silently within the system that caused it.

  • Unable to upgrade iTunes 10.1 or add new user

I have iTunes 10.1.0.56 installed on a Windows 7 PC.  Whenever I try to upgrade to any newer version, the installation stalls.  The dialog box says that the program is trying to use a resource that is unavailable, then it prompts me to try to find the folder containing iTunes64.msi, which is the installation program itself.  One of the suggested locations is "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe"; another is C:\Program Data\Apple Computer\Installer Cache\iTunes 10.1.0.22\ which was probably the first version I loaded after I bought the PC.  I have tried over-writing the version number; I have also found temp folders in cache from previous upgrade attempts, but none of those folder names work.  I keep getting the message that (whatever) is not a valid installation package.  Eventually I have to cancel the upgrade.
iTunes works fine for me and my children on our respective user profiles.  We all have iPods and used iTunes regularly.  My wife up to now is a non-iTunes user but she just got an iPod Classic for her birthday.  However, when she launches iTunes from her profile, the installation program launches and then stalls with the same error messages as above. So she can't use iTunes and without having her own iTunes account, her iPod is useless.
I have seen this problem or similar issues discussed on other boards, mainly involving older versions of iTunes and/or Windows.  I have pretty much the latest of both but can neither upgrade iTunes or set up my wife as a new user.  Can somebody out there help me??  Thanks!

I also encountered the same problem.
and yes, I uninstalled and reinstalled itunes 10.1.1 bla bla blahhh....
Same issue!!! itunes cannot open cuz the mobile device support not started etc..
but when reinstalled prior itunes version 9.2 its gone
    and issue fixed.
    i can sync my 3G.
but not my 4G. it says you need to upgrade to 10.1 or above
spending the whole night to fix the problem which never occured b4
i finally find out one thing.
pl keep in mind im not a computer exprt
i tried this and it worked, i don know what fixed it, bt it works
try this at your own risk. some comp genius will tell us weather this way is right or not.
    ok. lets start...
in your desktop make a new folder. name it Kmh_\CoreFP
try uninstalling the newer version 10.1
only the itunes not other mobile div suprt, application suprt etc.
    dont mind the following order:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
    and reinstall itunes 9.2
    go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple
you wil find a folder named "CoreFP"
copy it and paste to Kmh_\CoreFP
    uninstall itunes 9.2
    and reinstall itunes 10.1 again
    go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple
you wil find folder named "CoreFP"
find the difference in properties comparing the one u stored in Kmh_\CoreFP
ok delete it and replace it with the one we stored stored in Kmh_\CoreFP
restart the computer and start itunes now
    what happens?
    best of luck.
    -Kmhm63
    reinstall the newer version 10.1
I would suggest that you revert back to prior working version until Apple comes out with an update that fixes what 10.1.1 broke.

  • How do I permanently STOP the Bing Suggested Sites icon from being in the IE 9 toolbar for everyone and make it the default for all new users

Non of the other post on this subject were correctly answered and they are now old so here is a new thread for a question that a Microsoft Engineer should have answered a long time ago in one of the other threads.
     I have IE 9 installed.
I am setting up my default profile which will be used for ALL users to configure their profile when they log on. All profiles are destroyed on system reboot. All PCs are frozen.
Every time I log in as a new user and open IE 9, the favorites bar shows up as I want it with NO BING Suggested Site crapware in site. Then about .5 secs after IE starts and the Favorites bar is shown, the EVIL "Bing Suggested Sites" button appears.
I can delete it and it seems to stay away until I delete the users profile folder etc and have them log in again. When the profile is recreated the Favorites folder does not have a "Suggested Sites" option in the c:\users\username\favorites\links"
folder. (I have deleted the hidden .ini files in the default folder) Nor does one exist in the "c:\users\default\favorites\links" folder from which the newly created user profile folder comes. But as soon as I start IE 9, one is created and placed
in the users favorites links folder. This MUST STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is UNACCEPTABLE. AND IT MUST BE STOPPED!!!!! Where in the Windows 7 x64 Enterprise OS is the location of this evil action and how do I PERMANENTLY delete it.
I don't EVER want to see the EVIL BING Suggested Sites button anywhere on the PC especially in the Favorites Tool bar on IE 9. An I expect/demand that Microsoft tell us how to 100% cannot fail get rid of it for ALL USERS FOREVER NO MATTER WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!! I
have spent a lot of time perfecting my default profile making sur that ALL options are decide by me NOT MICROSOFT. I NEVER USE SYSPREP as that will destroy ALL custom defaults every time.
When a user logs in in to one of my PCs and they start IE 9 they get REAL Google for the default search engine, not the version Microsoft will give you which first sends all search requests to Microsoft so they can spy on what you searched in Google for etc.,
but real Google, not sent to Microsoft 1st. (I'll bet more than 90% of the readers of this site did not notice how if you let Microsoft set your default search provider to Google, they fix it so that all search requests go to Microsoft 1st, before it gets
sent to Google. Look at the search string under manage your search providers, in IE 7 & 8. In IE 9 it is hidden, but still there. HOW EVIL OF MICROSOFT)
With my default profile IE does not ask how you want to set it up, I have already made those decisions. I have made all those decisions for my users. But as of recently I have started installing IE 9 and now this unacceptable BING Suggested Sites junk ware
keeps showing up. HOW DO I STOP IT. Do I have to put a line in my HOSTS file to send all request for Bing.com to 127.0.0.1 just to make sure that it can't be used. There by removing all possibility of my users ever being able to use Bing FOREVER.
I would rather not do that but unless a Microsoft representative will tell me how to keep that useless Bing Suggested Sites button from appearing on the Favorites tool bar I will have to. I would love to let my user decide if they want to use Bing and waist
their time trying to find good search results, but I will not have it forced on them and I will not allow it to be on the Favorites tool Bar ever. So will a Microsoft Engineer please tell us how to put a permanent end to the "Bing Suggested Sites"
button for ALL users ALWAYS FOREVER.
    Thanks,
    Ralph

    Hi,
I suggest you try the steps in this thread for test:
