New user of Final Cut Express - recommendation for book, resource, training

I am a new user of Final Cut Express 4. Actually, I'm a new user of Mac too. I mastered Pinnacle on my PC but got fed up with the glitches, freezing etc.
Could use some advice on a good BEGINNER resource.
Anyone???

Hi and welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since FCE has a relatively steep learning curve, I would recommend getting one of two training books:
1. [Final Cut Express 4 Editing Workshop|http://www.amazon.com/Final-Cut-Express-Editing-Workshop/dp/0240810775 /ref=sr12?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240436986&sr=8-2] by Tom Wolsky. This is how I learned the program and I can assure you that it is a comprehensive guide with everything from basic to more advanced techniques. I highly recommend it. Tom is a frequent contributor to this forum, so if you had any questions about a lesson then he'd be here to help you out.
2. [Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Express 4|http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Pro-Training-Final-Express/dp/0321534670/ref=sr14?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240437118&sr=8-4] by Diana Weynand. Though I can't vouch for it personally, I have heard from many people who were pleased with their experience learning from this book, and I'm sure it is quite good also.
There are also several good sites I've visited with free tutorials that you might like to check out:

Hope that helps,

  • New User to Final Cut Pro X

    Hello,
I am a new user to Final Cut Pro X and am trying to figure out how to add a photo collage 3+ pictures to my edit film?  Any ideas or suggestions?
    Thanks Greatly

We really need a visual example as your request could mean many different things.
Assuming you want one or more pictures superimposed on the timeline, stack the pictures above each other, select each in turn, apply the transform tool, resize and reposition them.

  • Dropped frames on Brand New Macbook and Final Cut Express!

I have recently bought a New Macbook, and installed Final Cut Express HD 3.5 on it. I have Quicktime Player 7.3. My Macbook is a 2GHz Intel Core Duo processor. Memory is 1GB 667 Mhz. I have already used up a lot of Hard Drive on my Laptop with other applications, and in my capture window it says that I have 24.5GB space (109 minutes). Could this be the problem - not enough space?
I have looked over past discussions on this and in some cases I see that a downgrade to the old version of Quicktime has been necessary. As I have a new Macbook and new Final Cut Express HD, could this still be the case?
Also I have been reading the manuals, and wonder if the frame rate or time code settings could be affecting the dropped frames? Does anyone know where I can check this?
I'm a total newbie to FCE so be gentle....
    Appreciate all advice

You are quite frankly, a genius. I have just managed to capture my footage after a gruelling few days of trying just about anything. Your recommendations regarding settings and also the external hard drive have fixed my problem.
I'm going to have a large glass of wine now to celebrate my victory - and then I'm going to try and figure out how you actually use FCE after that.... er hem... now where did I put that manual..?
    Thanks loads

Yes you need to crossgrade to 5.1
The offer only lasts until the end of December and after that it'll probably go back up to $699.
Also I wanted to point out that you're in the Final Cut Express forum asking about Final Cut Pro. Not a huge deal but in the future you might get better results asking Final Cut Pro related questions in the Final Cut Pro forum.
i know that if you hit esc will run but it is to slow my hp 2.0ghz is faster
Your HP runs Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro faster?!? Huh...Bwa?!?
By this I assume you mean your HP runs comparative programs faster (Avid)

  • Sony DVD 403 users with Final Cut Express

    Hi.
Anybody's input on getting Sony's Mini DVD-RW. into Final Cut Express that uses a Sony DCR-DVD 403 camcorder.
    Walter

    Walter
DVD and FCE are not directly compatible. Probably not what you wanted to hear.
Mini DV (tape base) cameras are compatible.
You will have to either use analogue outputs from your camera hooked up to a DV Converter or use a software based converter to de-mux the files.
You will find lots of info on this forum, Try a search for de-mux.

  • New user to Final Cut Studio 2

I am using Final Cut Studio 2 for the first time and I am having a hard time loading video files. I have several quicktime files which won't open in Final Cut and some video I recorded on a camcorder using mini DV tapes which I am also unsure how to import. I cannot figure out what the format of the DV is. As you can tell, I know pretty much nothing about video.... stuff.... I've read the manual for Final Cut (first volume) and my camcorder and neither were helpful for this basic stuff. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Is there a new version of Final Cut Express?

This is probably a dumb question but I see the announcement of Final Cut Studio 2, does this mean that there is an update or will be an update to Final Cut Express?
    Thanks,
    Jim

There is no update for FCE at this time. Whether or when there will be is speculation and not something we can talk about on the forum.

  • Nikon D7000 to Final Cut Express 4 for dummies?

I am a recent owner of a Nikon D7000 and also FCE4 HD. I wish to use FCE to edit the videos I shoot with this camera. I've seen some discussions on how I need to first convert the video clips to a format that FCE can use because it apparently cannot process the .MOV files.
My problem is that I haven't found any discussions that explain what I need to do in a basic, step-by-step response. Please keep in mind that I know nothing about frame rates and all the technical jargon. I just want to know how to get the best results from the camera in order to get it into FCE to edit it. Big learning curve here.
I've downloaded MPEG Streamclip because I've read that I need that in order to convert something to something else, but that's as far as I've gotten...
Please, can someone help to explain this process in simple terms for a dummy like me?

Ok, FCE update done. I read that I should shoot in 1280x720;30fps instead of 1920x1080;24fps... so I switched the movie settings in the camera and shot a sample clip.
So, using the Quicktime Player Movie Inspector, I get the following info:
H.264, 1280x720, Millions Linear PCM, 16-bit little endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz
    29.97 FPS
    55.1 MB
    17.06 Mbit/s
    1391x782 pixels
    What now?

You can log in to the computer once and open up FCE HD. 4.0.1 and everything is fine and dandy save and quit.
Log back in and ope up FCEHD. Crashes, without warning. Right after the load screen.
Repaired the Disk Permissions and still nothing. I can't find the Pref files for FCE. Are they hidden in the application folder in the package contents?
They aren't in the Library/Preferences Like they usually are. Please someone help I want my students to work with FCE instead of that crappy iMovie. Thanks
    -Will
Ps. I have one copy of Final Cut Pro Studio 2 and now it started to do the same thing...

    Hello,
Does this happen on all 8 of your iMacs, or just 1 of them?  Is this a new behavior (meaning it worked fine before, and this just started happening?  If so, can you think of anything that may have changed recently, like a security update, installing new software, update or upgrade OS X?
What version of OS X is installed?
When you installed FCE, did you install it under an admin account and run it at least once in that account before running it in any user accounts?
Since this is a lab, are you using Workgroup Manager?  If the user accounts are networked accounts and the user folders are on the OS X Server, FCE won't work with that setup.
Are the iMacs networked, and if so did you use the same FCE serial number when you installed FCE on each Mac?  (FCE inspects the local network when it starts, to see if there is another copy running with the same serial number, in which case it will terminate.)
FCE preferences are in /users/username/Final Cut Express User Settings/Final Cut Express 4.0 Prefs  Each user has their own prefs file.

  • PrE 9 (Windows) vs. Final Cut Express 4 (Mac)

    Hi,
I've managed to do real work with PrE 4 on my Sony laptop and have generated a few reasonably good videos for my purposes at work. I bought PrE 8 but never managed to make it work, even on a clean machine running Win 7. I've mentioned my trevails elsewhere on this forum.
I called Adobe direct sales, mentioned that it's reasonably common knowledge that PrE 8 doesn't work, and asked if there was any deal going to v. 9. As the final cost is only $79 after rebate, I wasn't surprised when they said no. But PrE 8 did not work at all for me. I got 0 utility out of it.
Still, my experience with PrE 4 keeps me hopeful and I have some investment in the Premiere Elements UI.
    I am considering the following:
New Windows machine with PrE 9
New Mac with Final Cut Express 4
I quickly read some user reviews at Apple.com and it appears that even FCE4 has some issues, although those were short user reviews, not a forum like this with details and responses.
Anyways, is there anyone who can give me a high-level comparison of the two programs? I would like to move to AVCHD. I like the Avid-style interface. Is there another inexpensive alternative I should be considering?
Also, is Premiere Pro that much better? I would consider that but when I read about problems with video drivers, stability, etc., I assume those relate to a common code base between Pro and Elements. Also, my problems with PrE 8 have made me gunshy about dropping the bigger bucks with Adobe for Pro.
    Thanks.
    Steve

Well, you're asking to cover a lot in a brief forum post. Especially since it's a bit like comparing a sedan to an SUV to a pick-up to a minivan. They all have four wheels -- but which serves you best depends on your specific needs.
BTW, as I'm sure you're aware, Premiere Elements 9 is now available for the Mac too. So, although, at least in my experience, version 9 has fixed most of the bugginess of version 8 on the Windows platform, it also runs quite well on a Mac too. So that gives you another option.
Basically, Premiere Elements is a consumer program. It's got lots of pro features, but it's very user friendly and easy to work with.
Final Cut Express is just like Final Cut Pro, except without all the high-end features. Like FCP, Express can be challenging to learn. But, in my experience, I've not seen any bugginess with  it.
Final Cut will digest pretty much anything you feed it. It also edits AVCHD very efficiently, since it does so using a proxy codec -- sort of a lower-rez preview file. The challenge is that this means that, when you want to output your project, it can take hours for the program to render it.
Both Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro are used by professionals. Each has its own advantages. As I've said, Final Cut Pro has a lot in common with Final Cut Express -- but there are very few commonalities between Premiere Elements and Premiere Pro. They both edit video and look somewhat alike -- but comparing one to the other is like comparing a Honda Civic to a Mack truck. It's not really a fair comparison.
As for the bugginess you read about online -- I guarantee that there's not a program or computer system in the world that SOMEBODY hasn't reported issues with. The only true way to know if a program will work on your system or not is to download the free trial.
So -- if I can use the car metaphor one more time -- give them all a test drive. Only you know what's right for your needs.

  • Final Cut Express moving videos off hard drive

So I started capturing some footage on my laptop because I didn't have an external drive available. I finished the project, and now I'm back home with my external drive. My internal drive had 1.5 gigs free now, and I want to move all the footage I captured from FCE onto the external.
I know iMovie has an option to export the project and all the files into a single file. Does FCE have an option like this, or do I need to go through finder to where it saved all the footage and move them like that? How can I do this without losing all the links and having to reconnect my media...
hopefully this all makes sense, I've never really used FCE

    Hello Drew,
FCE doesn't have that option. You will have to use the Finder to copy the folders/files to your external drive and yes you will have to Reconnect Media after moving the files.
Be sure your external drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended and is connected via Firewire.
In FCE, close your Project. Then in FCE preferences reset your scratch disk location to the new Final Cut Express Documents folder on your external drive. Then exit FCE.
The default FCE scratch disk location is /Users/yourusername/Final Cut Express Documents. Normally your FCE project file and related material is in this folder. Under it you will find the following folders:
    Autosave Vault
    Capture Scratch
    Render Files
    Waveform Cache
    Thumbnail Cache
and there may be an Audio Render Files folder too
At this point you should be able to find a Final Cut Express Documents folder on your external drive; it should have automatically been created when you reset your FCE preferences earlier, along with an Autosave Vault and a Capture Scratch folder. Copy the files from your internal drive's Autosave Vault and Capture Scratch folders to the corresponding new folders on your external drive. Don't bother copying the render files or cache files - it will be better to re-render after you move your project. Also, if you have any other source media such as photos or music, copy them to a new folder on your external drive. Keep your FCE project file on your internal hard drive but do make a backup copy of it somewhere.
After copying everything, verify & double check that you have good copies of your clips on your external drive because the next step is to delete the originals of your captured clips that are on your internal drive. Don't delete any folders, just the captured clips themselves ... and all the render files. This is necessary so that when you reopen your FCE project it will be forced to reconnect media and you can point it to the new location on your external drive. Otherwise it will just continue to use the clips that are on your internal drive.
Then reopen your Project File that you left on your internal drive and reconnect media when prompted.

  • Video out of sync in Final Cut Express... but in sync everywhere else!

'm working on making one video that is composed of two camera angles of the same thing. So, I have two video tracks in Final Cut Express, one for the side view, and one for the main view. Both videos are Quicktime Movies (.mov extension).
    Here are the file details:
    Main Cam: duration - 1hr 26min 46sec // file size - 5.74gb
    Side Cam: duration - 1hr 29min 18sec // file size - 5.63gb
[the side cam video is a little longer because I started filming with that camera a little bit before the main cam and stopped the filming a little earlier]
Now, here's the problem. Both videos are in my Final Cut Express project. The Main Cam video runs fine. But the Side Cam video's video is out of sync with the audio by a lot (somewhere between 2 and 6 full seconds). Normally I would think that something had happened during the filming, but here's the odd thing: the Side Cam video plays perfectly in sync out of Final Cut Express.
If I open it in Quicktime, or even in iMovie, the audio and video are perfectly in sync for the entirely of the video. But when I import it into FCE and watch it there, whether it's in the timeline, in the viewer, rendered, or unrendered (I've tried them all), it's horribly out of sync.
So, the video plays fine and in sync everwhere except for in the Final Cut Express program. The Main Cam video, which has a very similar duration and file size and which is the same file type, plays perfectly even in FCE. The only problem is the Side Cam, and I can't figure out why this is, or how to fix it.
Another thing: these videos were not captured from a camera into Final Cut. I already have the video files on the computer, and as I've said, the audio is fine there. To get them into FCE, I use file -> import.
Also, if anyone has suggestions on how to fix this, could you provide directions of some sort? I'm fairly new to Final Cut.
Any advice would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much in advance!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Does both camcorders was set to 16-48 khz audio?
One way to synch audio that drifting from video (or from anoter audio lenght) is to set precisely 2 markers (one near the beginning, another near the end) in the correct lenght video track. Try to find spots where you can hear and see a common reference. The result of the workaround will put a corrected audios between those points only.
Now note the duration between those 2 markers in video track.
*Unlink the video/audio clip with the wrong duration.*
Select the drifting audio and put the 2 markers at the intended reference points.
The duration should be less or more than the video.
Use the blade tool to cut the wrong lenght audio at markers.
The tips is to set a new duration for this portion with the set speed command.
With this +new duration+, align the in point of audio with the first video marker. The out point of audio should be aligned with the second video marker.
Now the audio should match the video lenght and should be in synch.

  • Can I open a Final Cut Express HD 3.5 project in Final Cut Pro 5.04?

    Hello,
I've been working on a new project in Final Cut Express HD 3.5 and now want to import into my Final Cut Pro 5.04 but when I try to do so I get an error message telling me the file type is too new and non-compatible. Is there a way round this? I would have normally tried to import an XML from FCE but that does not seem to be an option.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

if you know someone with 5.1.4 they should be able to open it then get you an XML for 5.0.4

  • Final Cut Express 4 HD quits while loading

    Hello All,
I loaded a new copy of Final Cut Express 4 HD yesterday and it simply refuses to load. It installed successfully but once launched it displays the splash page for a few seconds and loads files then just stops and disappears. No error while loading is given but the following is a logged file of the problem which seems to be to do with Quick time and it trying to do two things at once with it ?
12/26/10 7:39:00 AM [0x0-0x22022].com.apple.FinalCutExpress[299] objc[299]: Class ProMetadataQTMDStorage is implemented in both /Applications/Final Cut Express.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/MIO.framework/Versions/A/MIO and /Applications/Final Cut Express.app/Contents/MacOS/Plugins/QTM Reader.bundle/Contents/MacOS/QTM Reader. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.
Does anybody know of this problem and how to fix it. I have latest QT 7.6.. have totally deleted FCE and re installed and updated the software but it still refuses to load when the application is launched.
    Any help greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    Andrew

    Hi Tom
The Mac is about 8 months old now and running 10.6.5 (it updates automatically) and was running this version when I installed the software yesterday.
I have updated all other software via the update facility but continually get this error log report. I've tried moving files out of the two directories the error log lists but FCE either refuses to do anything or just gives an error report as soon as its run if I move any of the files from the folders.
I did have QT 7 and 10 installed so deleted them both and reloaded version 7 but still no joy.
