New user ?'s-indesign magazine template/convert to folio? how interactive?

i want to start playing with indesign and i've never used it.
my question is, can i convert a magazine template from the adobe market place into a folio file?
what i want to do is an interactive file just like the content authoring  ad video examples on the content authoring page on adobe.
my other thought is can you import flash animations or other interactive files?
one of the things i'd like to do is when your finger swipes across the tablet, that an animation graph of numbers are being displayed.
maybe when you double tap a photo it breaks up to reveal the photo underneath.
any help are pointing in the right direction.
i've looked on active den but i have no idea what is i'm looking for is called.

InDesign is a professional application that takes time and effort to learn, let alone master.
What you are trying to do is akin to buying an airplane and expecting to be able to fly it.
So back up for a moment and buy Sandee Cohen's Visual Quick Start Guide: http://amzn.to/sJlBkt
You should also consider a subscription to Lynda.com. This link will give you a free one week trial: http://bit.ly/fcGpiI
As for your questions, Flash is out of the question with tablet publishing. It simply won't work, but there are way around just about everything. But you need to walk before you can run.
Finally, your questions are more about Digital Publishing Suite than InDesign. There is a dedicated forum for that: http://forums.adobe.com/community/dps

I have just purchased an iPhone5 and created a new user instead of using my iPhone3 ID. How can I access my previous data?

    don't just sign out!
if you simply sign out, the stuff you recently purchased will be an issue in the future when an update comes out for apps or anything else. restore the device as new from itunes then restore from a back if you have one as stated above...or set up as new and use correct apple id. this will ensure you will be using the apple id that you used originally without issues from the new one.

  • Will Newer Versions of InDesign Still Open/Convert Mac PM 6.5 Files?

All right, you've convinced me. I can see that holding on to old technology is not a viable long-term solution regarding PageMaker vs. InDesign. Eventually my old PowerMac Quad will fail and not be able to be repaired. At that point I would be forced into an Intel Mac and new software. I have a ton of PageMaker 6.0 and 6.5 files and will need to convert them to a new version of InDesign. I realize PM6 files will not work with InDesign, that I have to do the initial conversion via PM6.5.
I've studied the PageMaker forum hoping to see if this specific question has been advanced and answered but saw none. If in fact it has been addressed please understand that at least I did try before writing this.
My question is this: Will all versions of InDesign IE: CS1, CS2, CS3, CS4 or CS5 open PageMaker 6.5 files? Or will I have to go back to InDesign 2.0, copy/convert all the PM6.5 files and then begin the upgrade process? Surely (and hopefully) Adobe provides a direct upgrade path to the newest InDesign version once you have all PageMaker 6.5 files, rather than making you upgrade to each version individually. If Adobe provides a direct upgrade to the latest InDesign product will this policy be true throughout it's product line? I also have older versions of PhotoShop, Illustrator and Acrobat to be concerned with. (I know, I know... the last couple of sentences are not about PageMaker-sorry)
If anyone can answer this, please let me know so I can plan accordingly. Begrudgingly, I will probably begin the transition to InDesign soon. Looks like I'm in for a long, long study period to get up-to-speed. Bye-bye PageMaker, bye-bye PowerMac, so sad to see you go.

Chuck, I am not very qualified t
o answer your questions, but will do my best within my limi
tations (I am still using InDesign CS3, and I haven't had to work with PageMaker files for years).
I did open many PM 6.5 files with ID2, and I have just opened a couple in ID3. These two last were rather simple jobs, and opened without a hitch. When I had to open PM files with ID2, I remember some opened flawlessly, most with relatively minor glitches, and some required a lot of work to look the same than the originals. And yes, each version of ID that I have used opens PM files directly; no need to pass from older to newer versions.
Another thing I remember is that I also had a great number of PM files, which I still keep, but the ones that I have really had (needed) to convert are just a small fraction of them. Maybe you'll live a similar experience.
As for the learning curve, it surely is there; but in my case, I found it not at all steep, quite the contrary: I was surprised to find how fast I got used to the "new version" of PageMaker. Maybe if I did the move now (to version CS5) I wouldn't find the transition so easy as to ID2. And I know of people who have not found it easy, but don't seem to reacall anyone complaining of how very difficult it was for him/her.
As for upgrading several products at the same time, you'll have to think carefully what your future needs are really likely to be. You see, Adobe offers a very attractive price for "the whole lot", what they call the Creative Suite. I have however heard many complaints of people who feel they were "trapped" when they followed that route, because when it comes to upgrades, they can only upgrade the whole suite, not each product at a time. So you may be stuck with upgrading products you don't use and think will never use. Sort of what happened with Word and Excel, wich were the basis of MS Office: I understand that nowadays you cannot even buy each product separately, although I may be wrong.
If I were you, most probably I would upgrade at this time each product separately, keeping in mind that perhaps later it could be better for me to buy the Suite. And regarding this route: Adobe still offers a very convenient upgrade price from PageMaker to InDesign (no choice but the latest version), but nobody knows for how long they will keep this offer. I was one of those who though that when V5 was launched, Adobe would stop selling PageMaker (something that in my opinion they should have done when InDesign appeared), and the upgrade offer would end, but apparently I was wrong on both counts. Just be warned that this particular upgrade offer may be gone any day...
As for parting with such old and faithful friends, part of the words of a song my grandmother used to sing when I was a child came immediately back to my mind: Un viejo amor no se olvida ni se deja... an old love is never (really) forgotten or abandoned in my free translation, where I use the word "love" with the meaning of "loved person", and the optional "really" I added comes form the rest of the words of the song.
    Hope this helps.
Initial extra line breaks kindly provided by the software.

  • New user with ipod on old itunes account. How?

I inherited a macbook with a new job. How do I restart itunes with my ipod touch without losing everything on my ipod when I sync?
If this were a PC I could uninstall and reinstall itunes to get a fresh start that honors my current ipod, but I don't see how to accomplish this with a mac..

  • After creating a new user account, how do I move my files into the new user?

I have an issue where my 'Desktop/Screensaver' prefs seem to be corrupt somehow. When I click on that icon in System Preferences, it stalls and I get the spinning ball, thus resulting in a force quit. After reading a Mac Format magazine where someone wrote in with a similar issue, they said to trash various prefs (did that and made no difference) and if that didn't work, try creating a New User account (therefore creating brand new system prefs) and move your stuff over.
Well, I've created the New User account, but I can't figure out how to move/copy my stuff into the user folders. After copying and attempting to move stuff in, I see folders with a red circle with a white line through it (like a 'no entry' sign).
Any clue as to how this can be done? All I'm trying to do is to reinstate the system prefs so they are not corrupt anymore on my log-in.

No. Not the main Library folder. Make absolutely sure you are in the Home Library folder and not the main Library folder.
Your Home Library folder is hidden in Lion. To get to it, in the Finder menu, select GO and hold the option key down. Select Library in the submenu. The Finder window will open in your Home Library. This is where your user prefs are stored.
Once there, you will see the Preferences folder. Open it up, select all items within it and move them to the trash. You will need to restart in order for the new Finder preferences to be recreated.
Once you restart, then you will be back to the default preferences to the system and all applications. And yes, it will affect all settings including your Dock, just as logging into a new user. You will have to reset everything there also.
If you wish to do a selective method, instead of deleting all preferences, try deleting the one associated with your problem. Screen saver problems should be affected by the system preferences, so try deleting this:
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist.lockfile
Note that when you delete system file preferences, a restart will be required. For applications, just quit the application before trashing preference files.

  • 16 to 19 new Features for InDesign.

16th. With page Tool selected we must be able to  choose selection & Direct selection Tool by pressing Ctrl key to get  these tools temporarly.
17th.  We must be able to select more objects on different spreads at the same  time, when we zoom out to see more pages on pasteboard. now we want to  align all selected objects at the center on their pages vertically &  horizontally etc. there nust be check box availble in Align panel (  Align All ).
18th. Page Tool must be able to  select many pages at the same time by pressing Shift Key or with Page  Tool selected click & Drag on all over pages to select many pages.
19th.  With many pages selected by using Page Tool there must be check box  availble in the Controle bar fit all pages tp the content.
To see Other previous Features please go to my profile & click on My Stuff.

Dear Peter I did it but its not working, as you said, & also when selection Tool is selected we must be able to select direct selection tool by pressing Ctrl key to get it temporarly & if direct selection tool is slected we would press Ctrl key to get selection tool temporarly. like Illustrator. bytheway I am using Middle Eastern, maybe That problem is in M.E.
But thats OK!!! Pressing Ctrl key to get these tools temporarly is better idea than pressing their own shortcuts.
& Adobe should remove Frame Tools from InDesign b/c everyone knows these days, in InDesign basic shape tools can be changed into Frames & text frames, & text Frames also. Why rough/extra icons are needed?? in beautiful interface of lovely InDesign, few people say this is just for Quark Express user or another page layout program users, but in my idea every one know, now InDesign is the worlds no: 1 application for pagelayout & every one can see the free tutorials on TV.Adobe.com & if any person who is new user of InDesign, when that person start InDesign, that person will be welcomed by InDesign's Beautiful welcome screen, & in welcome screen there is written "Learn more about Adobe© Indesign© CS5 on Adobe TV", now no body should say ooooh with internet connected we are able to see these text!!!!! I know, but in these days computer users always use net, or I should say internet is the part of modern life, its enough to understand.
    20th. feature
Script in InDesign ???? why ?
in future there must be Actions in InDesign, just like Illustrator & Photoshop so that every user of indesign can understand actions in Ai & Ps, Ps & Ai users can understand in ID easily, it will be the best for new & old users. I know actions are also script, but action are easy to understand & easily can be created by anyone, & history panel is also necessary for InDesign, I know thirdparty plugins are available, but Adobe should release their applications flexible for Adobe users.

  • How to move iTunes library from time machine backup to new user

I recently pruchased a new imac and woiuld like to move my entire itunes and iphoto library to a new user I set up for the new computer. I used time machine to backup my old computer (a Macbook pro I purchased in 2007), but it just transferred the exact dektop I had on the laptop, and I cannot access any of my files from the new user. So at this point I need to start with transferring the two previously mentioned sets of files to the new user, and then I also need to know how to set my computer to default to the new user when it first boots up instead of it starting up with the time machine backed up user as it does now. Thanks!

I forgot to mention the iMac is running snow leopard and macbook pro is Mountain Lion

  • How to get files from external hard drive on new user on iMac?

My wife has an iMac, and I want to transfer my time machine info from my external hard drive that it ultimately from my laptop...onto a new user name on her iMac for myself. How do I do this? Because every time I connect my external hard drive, it just wants to save the content from her iMac....and will this erase her user stuff if I do this? Thanks.

Connect the extermal drive to her iMac and run the program called Migration Assistant. (It is in the Utilities folder.) This program will create an account on her iMac and copy your user folder to the new account. It will not erase anything (unless you tell it to.) Assuming your external drive is large enough you can also back up her account onto it. One drive can be used to back up multiple accounts. It keeps each account separately.

  • How do I create a "New User"

In my prior post of yesterday, "How do I password protect / lock an album, it was recommended to me to create a new user, then move the desired photos from the current library (current user) to the new library within the new user. Sounds like a good idea, but how do I do it? I'm a bit of a novice. Can someone walk me through the process?
    1. How do I create a new user?
    2. How do I transfer the selected photos in my current library to the new library in my new user name?
    Thanks,
    HDP

    Hi there,
I think PhillyPhan will post back in your other thread and explain the process...
But to give you my 2 cents, I would opt to create another iPhoto Library folder that contains the images you do not want to share and keep as private as possible.
By using this: hold down OPTION key and open iPhoto, a dialog will open, Quit - Create - Choose, just create another library in any part of your HD or even on an external HD under any name or even inside another folder. Once created you can import the photos you want to keep away from the general public. You can go back and forth between libraries by using the same option key etc. iPhoto will open automatically to the last library you opened. So, you can hide the library anywhere you wish on your Mac HD or external, and alot of people don't know the Option key / open iPhoto > choose library function.
The reasons I would choose to do it this way, someone would need to know you have another library and where the library is located in order to view the images.
Importing the images will take a bit of work, post back if interested or have any other questions...

Hi, I have a Indesign user who inherited a PC with Indesign installed. Indesign works with old PC user profile but not the new user. Any ideas how I can resolve this?

Question # 1 is what do you mean by "inherited"? Is this a case where the computer belonged to someone else? Your user would not be entitled to use a program licensed to someone else.

  • New user keeps crashing indesign CS3

So i had to add a new user for someone that needs to work on my station in the morning.  I created a new admin user for them and everything else in CS3 suite works okay but indesign. Indeisgn launches okay but when a document is launched it crashes. This is on a G5 10.4.11 OSX. anyone have any clue?

Repairing permissions is never the answer but people give it out all the time. Even major vendors Mac support team do. Adobe doesn't use the .pkg format for their installers, therefore repair permissions will not help.
    See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452
Does Disk Utility check permissions on all files?
No. Files that aren't installed as part of an Apple-originated installer package are not listed in a receipt and therefore are not checked. For example, if you install an application using a non-Apple installer application, or by copying it from a disk image, network volume, or other disk instead of installing it via Installer, a receipt file isn't created. This is expected. Some applications are designed to be installed in one of those ways.
Rather than repairing permissions your better bet assuming you made them an administrator is to go to your Adobe InDesign CS3 folder and slap the Get Info (CMD+I) and check under permissions. I'll assume since you made them an admin that you are also an admin. Under permissions there is a second set of pulldowns called "Group" which are probably going to say "Administrator" on the first and "Read & Write" on the second. Select the second one, set to read, set back to read and write, hit the "Apply to Subfolders" button. You'll likely be prompted for your password.
Now open the Adobe InDesign CS3 folder, switch to List View, select all files, hit ALT+Right Arrow. Press select all once more, repeat the step above. This is because OS X is fairly poor about applying permissions.
If you are unconfident feel free to copy your entire folder to your Desktop prior to doing this.
I'd wager a shiny nickel you have installed a 3rd party plugin, could be as innocuous as a font manager autoactivation one. You won't see the errors from those oftentimes until a document is loaded.

  • New user:  Problems placing text over object

    Hi,
I have recently started using InDesign CS5 to produce the biannual magazine for a volunteer organisation.  My background is not in this area, so please excuse me if  I do not use correct terminology or am asking something obvious.  Having said that I have been very impressed with the ease of the programme to use for what we need.
I am having a problem with the document I am currently working in, however if I place the same elements in a different document things are ok, so I know it is something I have accidently done, but after a lot of playing around I am at a loss.
My issue is when I place an Object (a photo for the cover) and then try to place text over the top the text disappears on the object, however can be seen when you take it off it.  You see the text box with the red cross mark in the bottom right corner.  If you ask to "bring to front" nothing happens.  Same if you try it using the photo.  Oher objects (logo) can be placed on top of the photo.  I have tried using Layers, but to no success.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Unable to Save new documents in InDesign CS5

I just upgraded from CS3 toCS5. I'm able to open old InDesign files and save but am not able to save a new document in CS5. I'm also not able to Undo. Any suggestions? Hoping this is an easy fix.

    Hi,
    Try re-creating the preferences.
    For windows Xp:
Drag the "Version 6.0" folder from C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\ to the desktop.
Drag  the "Caches" folder from C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Local  Settings\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\Version 6.0 to the desktop.
    For Windows Vista:
Drag the "Version 6.0" folder from C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\ to the desktop.
Drag the "Version 6.0" folder from C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\.
    For MAC:
Drag the "Version 6.0" folder from Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/ to the desktop.
Drag the "Version 6.0" folder from Users/[user name]/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/ to the desktop.
If this dosen't work tried creating new user account with Admin rights.

  • Is it possible to leverage InDesign Server templates in a custom web app?

    Hi there,
I am building a custom web app and was hoping to leverage our existing InDesign Server templates within our web app. What I would like to do, is based on user input, show my template with the user's input in the browser. I have looked through the API guides for InDesign Server CS6, but I haven't been able to conclusively find anything that will allow me to use the APIs to call the server, send the data points the template requires, and then get an image back from the server.
I believe this is possible, I am just not sure how to achieve it! Any ideas or articles that help push me in the right direction would be extremely helpful!
    Thank you!
    Marshall

Yes it's completely possible. There are two parts to making something like this work:
    1. The scripts themselves. You can generally script InDesign Server and desktop InDesign exactly the way using ExtendScript. So that's the part of the process where your script receives variables and passes them into the template and replaces something you've identified as variable, whether text or an image or something else (perhaps a color theme, etc.). You should get your scripts running on desktop before playing around with server.
    2. The messaging between your web app and the server. Whatever language you are using (i.e. PHP, .Net, Java, Ruby…) there is a way to make a SOAP call to InDesign Server to tell it basically "run this script with these parameters". You should get the "hello world" script running from a SOAP call on the server before using your real variable-driven document.
The documentation of these things is available here:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/indesign/sdk.html
You need to download the InDesign Server SDK (don't worry if you're on CC and it says CS6, almost nothing changed) and the InDesign Scripting SDK. The Server SDK deals with part #2 above, the Scripting SDK with part #1.
It really isn't that hard. I should warn you, though, that it is addictive and once you do your first one you will become all-powerful and want to do nothing else. :-)
Good luck and don't hesitate to ask questions.
    Max
