New User - Wireless Internet Problem

Hello all.
I'm a brand new Mac user but I am becoming extremely frustrated with connecting my Mac Mini to my existing wireless network. I have WEP enabled and I know for a fact that I'm using the correct password. Just to be sure, I disabled the password function. My Mac Mini sees my home network but will not connect to it. The only error I get is "There was an error joining the AirPort network "WirelessHome"." Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

]The only error I get is "There was an error joining the AirPort network "WirelessHome"
Which wireless router do you have?
Some 802.11b access points require a firmware upgrade before 802.11g (Extreme) clients can connect.
Though 802.11g is backward compatible with 802.11b some older access points were developed before 802.11g and therefore are not in a position to allow the 802.11g clients to connect.
Check the vendor site for a firmware upgrade for your wireless gateway.
Note that you can attempt to persuade an Airport Extreme client to operate in 802.11b mode.
Hold down the control key [ctrl] when selecting the network from the menu.

  • New MBP - wireless/internet access networking problem - a summary!

    Greetings!
New MBP here, with all the trimmings (MacOS X 10.4.10 - Safari 3 Beta). New also to the Apple/MAC world
MBP >> wireless networking into a Linksys WRT54G router and >> thru HughesNet DW7000 Satellite Internet connection (not the fastest, but hey, the US and especially rural areas are NOT S. Korea when it comes to speedy internet connections!
Frankly, I bought into it for two reasons: First, hearing about the vaunted Mac a/v/ and doc/photo editing capabilities,... and about MacOS stability, etc... Well, it all needs a little work still: on the part of new users like me, but also probably on the part of the Apple/Mac people as well. 2nd reason I decided to purchase the MBP - i.e. ability to run Windows (I have not yet tried BootCanp, etc...: still resolving preliminary issues!). I still live in a heavy Win environment at my business - no other way of course!
Communications issues seem to still prevail: I am hanging out at several VERY HELPFUL forums (AppleDiscussionForum, MacRumorsForums, etc...) and the same issues keep popping up. Im my case, same as all above reported, with a few additional points, as follows:
    1. Xmission errors: seem to be - at least in my case - a constant factor, regardless on how close/far i am from my wireless router. For example, I would be attempting to dwnload an upgrade (large)QT or MacOS file. i am barely into the dowmoad, and I already have several Read/Send errors. By the end of the download, I will have probably about 15 Rcv and 5 Send errors. Never gets quite that bad in my Win machines, I must mention. Anything to do here (I know, there are such things always affecting wireless com). AND, MOST importantly, how that this affect the effectiveness of the upgrade (I spotted same thing with MacOS 10.4.10 and Safari Beta 3 upgrade downloads!). Would it be likely that applying upgrades in such circumstances would screw up the OS??? Could OTOH such errors be automatically "compensated" by re-xmits from the source, and eventually the download would be OK? Because quite frankly, I do NOT know if my important upgrade download was OK to apply to the system, given those errors!!!
Also same thing with PING errors. Quite frequent when pinging another device on my network.
    2. Quite often, accessing a site will proceed somehow OK, and then things will get stuck twd the end, as if some buffer somewhere gets overloaded??? Of course, as elsewhere reported, same can often happen with com getting stuck right over the "www" part of the URL!
    3. AND, of course, the often reported "NO connection to the Internet", but computer shows good signal level and connection otherwise.
    4. Strangely enough, seems that the Airport Extreme wifi card sort of "warms up the the internet" as one proceeds to start using it. It eventually picks up on a network, and often "improves" its connection over time!
    5. Built in Airport Extreme seems to not exhibit up all immediately surrounding networks. Sensitivity issue?? iStumbler does.
    6. iStumbler permanently posts noise level of 9% regardless of how close to my wireless router/broadband modem I am. Anyone uses iStumbler to monitor network traffic?
This is getting longuish: I just want to get over all those p*ant issues and get into putting my a/v stuff together!!

Thanks for just reading all this!. I am not sure it is all fixable (back to the Win "features" terminology, really meaning "bugs"??)

Thanks, BDaqua. This support forum is quite well stocked: I have been perusing all its nooks and cranies!
On the www.dslreports.com - All things Mac - forum, I spotted a couple of mentions of the following type of infromation:
    link: »www.hardmac.com/news/2007-07-27/#7039
    - The first TechNote provides information concerning the Airport problem affecting the MBP Santa Rosa (but also other Mac Intel). When used on battery, the wireless connection drops and one can even experience kernel panic. Apple Centers are asked not to exchange affected notebook as this is due to a unidentified bug in the Atheros driver, and should be fixed in the future with a simple Airport system update. So for the moment, unfortunate users are asked to directly power their notebook when using wireless network, or using Ethernet connection when running on battery... in other words, turn your notebook into a desktop

I am wondering if you and folks on this close-to-Apple forum know anything about this. At least, we could just await remedy instead of messing around endlessly looking for solutions and... pondering as to whether it was a wise thing to purchase an expensive machine which happens to have trouble communicating online. After all, seems that the Mac folks are prone to spend MORE time online uploading/downloading music and videos instead of my being normally doing with the rest of my (Win) computers, i.e. work on customer lists, correspondence, inventories, accounting, data bases, etc....
So, seems to me we do have a pb and Apple might just save a few $$$ on silly ads and get to work on com instead. if nothing else to avoid the appearance of further - admittedly rather funny - ad-spoofs!
So back to your further inquiry. I run a wireless network from a HughesNet satellite modem, thru a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router, into some nearby office LANed desktops and point of sale equipment, to another neighbouring facility via wireless bridge, and to my Mac laptop. Distance from the laptop to the router: 50 ft max.
It all works surprizingly very well: up to 200kbps up and 1000 kbps down (in prime time, 150 up and 600 down). OK, my set up looks complex and incurring LOTS of activity. Actually, online activity is quite minimal and well scheduled - right now I am the only machine on the network online. Otherwise, our office processes online money wiring for customers among other things.
I'll try your DNS server choice on the Mac settings first. Will report accordingly.
    Thanks for everything!

  • New Laptop -- wireless internet halfway working?

I just got my new HP Pavilion dv4t Entertainment PC and everything has worked fine up until I wanted to connect to the internet. I double clicked the connector thing in the bottom right corner and chose the appropriate wireless network and filled in the correct password.
So it now shows that I am connected to my network ("Home") and I have full bars, however when I proceed to click on IE and load a simple page like "http://www.myspace.com" it fails to work. It pretends it's going to work and gets about half way done loading the page (according to the status bar, anyway) and then just stops and the site never loads. However, when I type in google/yahoo.com those pages come up perfectly (and fast) and I can search their search engines. But when I search something like "avg anti-virus" and the search engine displays the results I try to click the first one and it does the same freezing thing it did when I tried to type in "http://www.myspace.com"
I'm using comcast internet, a netgear router, and all of my other computers have connected to the wireless internet without a problem (all the other computers run on XP, though...)

Hi, This happens to me as well. I turn on computer Outlook recieves emails no problem but I go to internet and nothing. It looks like it loads the page sasy 'done' in corner but I stare a white screen. errrhhh. The only way for me to get internet is to disconnect/connect 2-3 times in a row. One time never works. Every other laptop in hosue including my 8 year old gateway connect first time. I tried to explain to best buy and they say nothing is wrong?? Other thant that I love my new laptop.

  • New iMac wireless internet crashes repeatedly -- why?

Just set up the following wireless LAN: Netgear WGT624v3 wireless router as access point between a broadband cable modem, a new 27" iMac, a PowerBook G4, and a Canon wireless printer. Everything works great except for one thing: whenever I'm trying to use the internet on the new iMac, my internet connection crashes and I have to manually reset the modem and router. This happens when downloading a file even as small as 2 Mb. As you can imagine, this has become incredibly irritating, as none of us can get anything done on our new computer without me having to come over and flip a switch on the power strip to repeatedly reset the internet connection.
The Netgear router is about as old as the PowerBook (3+ years)--I see it's listed "EOL" (end-of-life) on the Netgear website, and I'm wondering if it may not be powerful enough to handle the new iMac? That's the only thing I can think of, since using the internet with the PowerBook causes no problems at all. I don't understand the subtleties of Airport v. Airport Extreme, 802.11b, g, n or whatever, to figure this out on my own.
Anyone had a similar problem and/or can confirm that the router is the culprit before I needlessly spend money on a new one?

Some things you can try, if you haven't already:
-Make sure you don't have any cordless phone base stations operating near your router.
-Are any other electrical appliances (like microwave ovens or fluorescent bulbs) operating when your wireless connection fails?
-Power down the router and the iMac, then restart each.
-Change the channel your router uses to broadcast its signal. You should be able to do this from the web browser interface most routers support.
-Check Netgear's support website for firmware updates. Some routers can be commanded to check this from the web browser interface.

  • Ethernet/Wireless internet problems..This is Driving me CRAZY..please help!

Alright i hope someone out there can solve my problem because i am about to throw my macbook against the wall. This is my problem:
Everytime i go on to the internet, in order for the internet to work i have to pull my ethernet cable out of the plug, plug it back in and refresh the page. The internet then works for about 4 pages on avg. and then it times out and says im not connected. In order to continue surfing on the net i have to pull the cable out and plug it back in. The wireless acts the same way. It will work and then times out. I have to turn off the airport and back on to get any internet.
The browsers im using are Safari 3.1.2 and Firefox 3.0.1 and both act the same way. My roommate has a PC and has had no problems whatsoever. Our internet comes through the wall from a plug not from a router. I personally believe that it is my computer because i have tried getting internet from the plug in his room and the same thing happens. The wireless around my school comes from different towers and no matter where im at the same thing happens. I dont believe that its the internet. Ohh and one more piece of info. My first year at school my computer gave me NO internet problems whatsoever. I bought the computer brand new in June of 2007.
If anyone knows how to fix this extremely annoying problem, please help me!! Thanks to all who answer~

    Hi
I'm getting a problem which may be related, and i've figured out some workarounds (sort of inadequate ones but at least they're something).
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: almost immediately after installing the 10.5.5. system update, my MacBook started disconnecting itself from my wireless network. i'd be working online and suddenly i'd notice that only 3 bars of the AirPort icon on the menu bar would be showing and that the internet connection was no longer there. the only way to get the connection back would be to switch airport off and then back on and it would connect again. a couple of minutes later the connection would be gone again. infuriating stuff! i checked the system log using the Apple System Profiler (from the Apple menu) and found some messages about there being too many state changes detected on the AirPort network interface and that measures were being taken to fix stuff. it's a pity i didn't save the original error message since i no longer get it, but here's one I found that's identical reported by someone else:
May 25 16:50:57 phoebe mDNSResponder[22]: Note: Frequent transitions for interface en1
(FE80:0000:0000:0000:021E:C2FF:FEB9:8B73); network traffic reduction measures in effect
anyway, the "measures" seemed to be to simply disconnect me from the net, which wasn't great. now the forums mentioned various solutions, but none of them actually worked.
SOLUTION/WORKAROUND: two things seem to have made a difference. 1. i downloaded the combo 10.5.5. system updater and reinstalled it. somehow after i did this the problem would no longer happen (at least those errors would no longer occur). 2. keeping my ipod touch wireless interface switched off, because whenever my touch comes online within a minute or two the iBook disconnects from the net.
COMMENTS: (1) even now if i connect to the wireless network with my iPod, my MacBook's connection will drop - so my solution is to not connect to the wireless network with my iPod touch, which ***** because i like to read stuff in bed on the touch sometimes. (2) reinstalling the system update (the combo version) definitely helped, because before i kept getting that error message in the system log, and even if the iPod touch was switched off the MacBook would still disconnect. (3) this suggest that there were two separate problems, one to do with a corrupted AirPort driver or something of that sort (which was fixed when I reinstalled the system update), and another to do with being kicked off when the iPod touch connects to the wireless network (this problem remains).
I've replace my Linksys wireless router with a Netgear wireless router, but that's made no difference, so i'm pretty sure that the problem has to do with the MacBook - either the hardware or the software. I plan to get another hard disk soon at which point i'll do a clear reinstall of the OS, and if the problem persists then i'll know that it's a MacBook hardware problem. =(
i'll post again here in the future, but if anyone has comments or suggestions or reports of this kind of problem then your input would be highly appreciated.
    thanx

  • New User Account, scanner problems

Set up a new account on our eMac for a new employee. Her account is the only other account besides mine (Administrator). Our Cannon CanoScan N676U scanner is not communicating with new user's account. Launch Photoshop, it loads, click File, Import, Canoscan 7.0.1X, and receive error message that cannot communicate with scanner, scanner may be unplugged, check connection. I log into my administrator account and no problems. I've deleted her account, set-up a new one (giving her administrator rights) and the same issue occurs.
I've been in contact with Cannon, and have verified and repaired Disk Permissions. I don't know what to do? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

  • Software Installer and wireless internet problems after upgrade from Leopard to Lion.

Last weekend I upgraded the OS on my MacBook Pro from Leopard to Snow Leopard, and then from Snow Leopard to Lion. I'm having a couple of problems.
First, I cannot get the wireless internet to work. My internet connection is fine, I can plug the ethernet cord in and all is well. But I cannot get wireless signals to work. Have tried both my Airport Express and an old linksys router, and neither seem to work. They both worked just fine before the update. I had very fast wireless internet, and now nothing.  With the Airport Express, when I plug it in iti'll just continuously blink orange, and the Airport Utility refuses to recognize it. The linksys router seems to work, because it puts off a signal and my iPhone connects to it. My computer recognizes the signal, but it won't open any internet pages, says I'm not connected.
Today I tried to install Apple's Migration Assistant software to help with my first problem.  But a funny thing happened.  The software installer says I don't have enough space. But I have plenty- I have almost 200 GB, and I only need 5 MB for the program.  I've never seen this happen before, it's so odd.  Any suggestions?
    I really appreciate any assistance/suggestions!
    Thanks,
    Ellen

You can't purchase Snow Leopard from the Mac App Store.  Or "download" it.  That will be possible for Lion.
For the Apple Online store, why can't you just look for yourself?

  • New user request screen problems

    HI all,
I am trying to use the funcitonalty where a new portal user clicks on "Register now" screen, it sends a message to the portal admin (which comes in "User administration->Users->New user requests") and the portal admin approves it and then creates the user.
But this is not working for me. I try to create the new user from the register screen, it gives a blank screen (as no roles are assigned to this user) and it does not send mail to the admin.
Please let me know if I need to do any configuration for this to work. This would be of great help for me.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Narahari

    Hi Narahari,
For the user self registration to work you need to have companies enabled. The reason this the user sees no role attached as since the administrator has not accepted the user request the user is still a guest user. You need to enable the same. This link will take you through each step on how to confiugre self registration.

  • Wireless internet problem!

    hello,
i just got my new laptop a couple days ago. i have a netgear wireless router and a cable modem. everything works fine at my house and the internet works as it should. the problem is when i go to another house it doesnt work. everything is plugged in right and its the exact same modem as the one at my house... but i just wont work. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

did you unplug the cable modem for 30 seconds?
basically, from my limited knowledge of these balky things:
cable modem grabs an IP from the ISP.
router grabs that IP and assigns its own IP to a pool.(DHCP)
MacBook grabs one of those router IPs.
so your MacBook may have the old router IP, which has the old ISP IP it got from the old cable modem. often times shutting off one or all of the above will force them to refresh and grab the correct IPs. does that make sense?

  • Help! Wireless/internet problems

I recently bought a new Toshiba laptop, my girlfriend was down state visiting her parents so I was the only one home. I connected my laptop to the internet wirelessly with no problems what so ever. A  few days later she came home and was on the internet and when I tried connecting to the wireless network it said limited access no internet access and also took hers offline too, she turned her computer off and mine started working. We screwed with the router and pretty soon I could only connect to the wireless once and a while by myself. I hardwired the computer to the internet which worked but as soon as she tried connecting we both had no internet. I am getting VERY frustrated can anyone help me?

On all your computers that are running Vista or Win 7 (which yours most likely is), disable IPv6 under LAN properties for all adapters in the computers both wired and wireless.  Disable UPnP in the router.  Reboot computers and try to connect again.

  • Time Capsule Wireless Internet Problems

I am using the new Time Capsule as a wireless router with all my devices connected to it. I use a BT Home Hub as the DSL modem. I constantly lose my internet connection. It is so bad that the only solution is to power cycle everything by unplugging form the mains. Any thoughts?

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

  • Wireless Internet problem on macbook pro

I have been having problems connecting to the Internet lately. When I go to the airport signal I never see a signal. When I do get one my Internet cuts off after about 10-15 minutes My roommates are able to connect no problem and have pc's. My iPhone picks up a signal all the time. I wanted to know if anybody knows how to fix this problem? Thanks

If your roommates aren't having a problem, it could be a hardware problem on your MBP. I did have a problem logging onto an older Windows-based network until I realized I had to type the "$" before entering the hexidecimal password. But you're not even seeing a WiFi signal, so it could be your hardware. If so, hopefully your unit is on warranty?
I don't have any WiFi problems on my unibody MBP in general. It seems to easily connect at home in any room (via Airport Extreme), at work, and at any coffeehouse, hotel, or mall that has free WiFi--and it remembers the network so that the next time I visit I don't have to do anything other than open the lid and turn it on. Also, at home, I typically see all my neighbors routers, even though they must be at least 100 feet away.

  • Migrating but to new user account - permissions problems?

    Hi guys,
I have a new iMac, and want to move all my old files (not apps - yet) to my new machine.
I'd like to start fresh as much as possible and would like to split my old files and email accounts into three separate accounts on the new machine - Home account / Business account & the wife's Business account!
By copying the relevant mail folders from the old "home" account to a new account on the new machine, I know I'm going to have permissions problems. And it'll be the same I guess for all the other docs and files which will be moved to the other accounts?
How do I get around this?
Thanks for any advice or help!
