New versions of apps are available, but app store says no updates

Hi all, I wonder if anyone can help. I'm running a late 2008 aluminum Macbook. It's running 10.9.1 Mavericks with 4 GB of RAM and runs just fine. My problems are with app updates.
Specifically, when I launch Keynote, Pages, Numbers, etc., they all say that a new version is available and it gives me the option to update. However, when I click to update, the app store opens and shows no updates available. Sure enough, when I navigate to specific apps, the versions shown are indeed newer versions than what I'm currently running, yet there is no option to install them, as the button just shows as "installed."
Any idea why the updates are not showing up? Also, why are newer versions on the store not giving me the option to download them, and just showing as already installed?
I've tried restarting to possibly clear out RAM, refreshing the app store page to the current version, etc., but nothing seems to solve it.

Maybe reset SMC, NVRAM, or shake a dash of salt on its tail.
None of my antiques can go to the iTunes 'apps store' now.

The first thing you should do after acquiring a used computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the gray installation discs that came with it. If you don't have the discs, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, it should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.

I get banners messages that updates are available, but when the App Stroe applications searches for updates it can't find them and says that: no uodates are available. I had to download both the MAC OS10.8.1 and MAC OS10.8.2 manually from the Apple website.

I scoured the web looking everywhere for a solution to this.
Exit Code 15
OSX 8.5 with Work@Home DVD media for CS6
I followed instructions to run 3rd party cleaner software
I tried the adobe removal tool
removing all copies of adobe software manually
installing from a new account, safe mode, plist everything suggested that i found did not work.
A colleague suggested that removing the below folder would allow the installation:
/Library/Application Supports/Adobe
They turned out to be correct, so i am passing this on, because this took far too many hours of my time.

Actually, there seems to be a bit of a bug. Encountered this with a couple of files my wife made. The files were set to "open with" the new Keynote, but clicking the file brought up this error. Right-clicking and selecting "open with..." worked correctly. I can only assume the OS was attempting to open the file with Keynote '09 despite the file property setting.
Probably requires a Launch Services DB reset (although I haven't actually tried it on my wife's MBA yet...since she's still "working on stuff". So I can't confirm if it will solve the problem).

Try rebooting your iPad and see if they reappear.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If they still do not show up, make sure hat you don't have content restrictions set that could prevent certain apps from showing up on your iPad. Settings>General>RestrictionsAllowed Content.
if you still don't see them, connect your iPad to iTunes on your computer and you should see them in the iPad mini screens on the right side of iTunes after the iPad has been selected under "devices" and when you are in the apps pane of iTunes.

Updates App says application updates available but App Catalog says no updates available

I'm having an issue where the Updates app says that application updates are available, but when I click the button and it opens the App Catalog My Applications page, none are available. I recently doctored my phone, and wonder if it happened somewhere in that process. And tried the suggestion of removing the .db file, but that doesn't work. It seems I might have a "phantom" app, and was wondering how I can determine which app that is to redownload it and remove it to fix this problem. I can PM my Palm profile e-mail when needed if that is the solution to the problem.
In addition, possibly related to this, is that whenever I go to Preferences + Accounts from the My Applications scene in the App Catalog, it freezes. It doesn't even get to the Accounts page, it just freezes with the menu displayed where I clicked Preferences + Accounts. This works from the main App Catalog scene. Not sure if this has to do with an issue with my Palm Profile and phantom app, but clearly something isn't happening right.
I did two doctors, and a full device reset as well, so I have exhausted those options in trying to fix this problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Went through Palm support. Basically how I fixed it was:
Asked for the list of "installed" apps on my Palm Profile.
Installed all the apps that were missing from my device that existed in the profile.
Removed the ones I didn't want by doing "delete application" from the app catalog.
With a little luck, and after a reboot, the issue went away.
I think what originally started this issue was after a doctor, I cancelled the download of some of the apps so they would restore faster. I don't think that deleted them from the palm profile.
Anyway, in case anyone runs into this problem, thats how I got past it.

Niel, thanks for your response. I have been very wary of downloading Mavericks on this machine. I don't feel it has the power to run it and I'm afraid it was slow it down terribly. It was bought in late 2008. It's fine for my purposes at this time…just holding on until I buy a new one. I have the same problem others have with autofill not working, so I was trying to see if an update would help that situation. Grace

On pressing retry I got the same message.
On pressing Ignore, I got the message “ITunes was not installed correctly, please reinstall ITunes – Error 7 – (windows error 126)
I reinstalled with the same error messages and the same results.
I uninstalled existing and reinstalled from scratch and the same error messages again.
I try to repair and at the end it said it had installed correctly – but when it tried to start I got the message “This application has failed to start because MSVCR80.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem” I now get the same message when I first start the computer but when I press ok I receive ““ITunes was not installed correctly; please reinstall ITunes – Error 7 – (windows error 126)” again.
It appears the update has not only corrupted the operating system (Xp Pro SP3) of my computer but I have no backups to my IPhone, my wife’s IPhone or the three others phones that use my computer.
I hope you can advise me how to recover my backups

You may want to try restarting to see if that has any effect Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
