New versus late 2007 models- big speed difference?

Can anyone comment on performance of the new '08 MacBook Pro models versus that of the late 2007 series? I'm considering the purchase of a refurbished machine. Is the performance bump that great? Are the new trackpad and gesture system compelling? Or should I just save a few hundred bucks and go for a refurbished model? Either way, I'll be getting Applecare.

from what ive seen (i own an early 2007 2.33 and many of my friends here on campus have the SR 2.2 or 2.4s)
the later screens are slightly brighter. the speed is a touch faster. the screen is placed slightly higher on the lid. and they seem so be attracted to the ground (it seems like everyone i know has dropped their machine, in the last week and a half 2 of my friends dropped their machines and there is a huge number of people who's corners are flat on their machines from dropping them... maybe they have a special gravity about them... maybe college students are careless).
the biggest difference is the fact you can have 4 gb of ram and they had upped the HD space on them (doest really matter at this point since you can put what ever size you want in that is the same format).
if the multi touch isnt something you want then the refurb mac should be fin e for you.

  • Late 2007 model Incompatible with snow leopard?

Hello. I have a White Late 2007 model (the first with the x3100) macbook running at 2.0 ghz, with 2 gb ram and a 120gb hard drive.
After installing 10.6 from the retail Mac boxed set My screen backlight started to randomly die. Eventually it got so bad that the backlight would just flash on start up and go black after that.
Last night i loaded the Mac os X 10.5 retail DVD. and Low and behold, Backlight works Perfectly.
I now have the problem that It will not let me install Leopard. I have used disk utility to wipe the hard drive clean. But the installer gets to the "Use english for main language" section and then after pressing the continue button, says that "Mac os X cannot be installed on this computer"
i press "ok" and load the installer log
which says that the error is something along the lines of "installer tried to create a new folder with UID=0" or something about a new folder and UID=0
I have tried the retail 10.5.0 dvd, the Original 10.5.0 restore disks that came with the macbook, the 10.5.2 Imac restore disks and the 10.6 retail and restore disks that came with both the boxed set and the 13"macbook pro. Same problem. "Mac os X Cannot Be installed on this computer"
Before i installed Snow leopard i did have a leopard and ubuntu 9 installation on the machine, and deleted both via a fresh install.
Any ideas?. I have tried reseting the PMU/PRAM, no effect.

Have you formatted the drive? Sounds like you erased the drive but you haven't formatted it. In Disk Utility, under the Partition Tab, you need to select a number of partitions (usually 1) from the drop-down where it says Current. Give the drive a name (usually Macintosh HD). Next select GUID Partition Table by clicking the Options button located just under the hard drive graphic. When you do all of this, hit the Partition button at the bottom and let it do its thing. When you did the Erase, did you choose the Mac Extended (Journaled) format?
If this is unclear, there is a section on preparing a new drive in [*This Tutorial*|http://www.macinstruct.com/node/130] that has pictures and explanations.
Once you have it partitioned, you should be able to install off of the restore disks from your MacBook.

  • Macbook Late 2007 Model HELP!!!!

My 2 yr. old snapped my restore disc in half, well, actually several pieces. I want to do a clean install, but it requires the "special" version of 10.5 that only came with the restore disc. Can anyone help?
    thanks

I did call apple, but I don't want to pay for a set when I went out and purchased a retail copy of Leopard to take care of the problem, not knowing I needed a "special" version of 10.5. Of course, they will not return the copy of leopard so I can purchase the restore disc. Go figure.

  • What SSD For Macbook Late 2007

    Hi all.
As a second Mac ive just bought a second hand Macbook 2.2Ghz Core2Duo late 2007 model odd a friend for a very reasonable price.
Ive already ordered some RAM to max it out as it only has the stock 1GB and 160Gb HDD. to go with the ram i would like to upgrade to an SSD drive and am aware that this model is a Sata I connection at 1.5Gbps throughput. As most drives are now Sata II or III am i ok buying one of these? Im only after a circa 128Gb SSD as will be plenty for my needs. Im a uk based user and am a graphic designer so this machine will be mainly a web machine for net use with light photoshop/illustrator/indesign use.
Im currently running Snow leopard on it and intend to keep it that way, unless ML would give me speed increases on a machine of this era?
Crucial states their M500 Sata III drives are compatible, so am i wright to assume any Sata II or III drive will be ok?
Any help and recomendations are very much appreciated and i thank you kindly in advance!
    Rob

    Mike,
Funny you ask, as when you posted that i was actually out buying the Samsung 840 120Gb SSD.
Basically the Macbook i picked up cheap off a mate was new to me last week. Came from a very particular owner that looks after things extremeley well. Its a 2007 2.2Ghz 3.1 model that ive upped to 4Gb RAM, and had wiped clean and reinstalled a fresh copy off snow leopard onto.
So today i came home with said SSD, and earlier this morning i had cloned the fresh install onto a firewire 400 drive ready to go. The 840 aleready had the latest firmware revision listed on Samasungs website, so i went ahead and removed the 5400rpm HDD it had from new, put the SSD in (never done one before and was surprised just how easy this was).
Then i booted up off my external drive, and the OS advised it could see the internal SSD but could not write to it - did i want to initialise. So after i clciked yes, i was able to erase and restore from my external back to the SSD. It has then booted up fine from the inmternal, taking longer on the first boot (i beleive this is normal). I installed and turned on the 'Enable Trim' app and rebooted twice. the second time getting a significant increase in boot time and all apps.
System profiler shows TRIM support on and the up to date firmware revision.
Snappy snappy! And my favourite new feature of the SSD? the fact that i feel no vibration when on my lap! Oh and the speed.
So yes, this Sata III drive seems to be fully fuctional on a Sata I interface, and although not as fats as newer Sata II and III machines, i feels alot snappier than before. And cooler as well. havent heard the fan so far since cloning back.
And thanks for your help and input earlier in the post!
The guy in the shop advised me it wouldnt work in my Mac (dumb-***) although i had specifically searched out product reviews that people had said had had success on Sata I and II machines of this vintage.

  • What is the correct replacement optical drive for MBP late 2007?

    Hello all,
I am finally getting around to replacing my failed SuperDrive, a Panasonic UJ-857E.
Reputable online resellers say the Panasonic UJ-867A will work.  I bought one.  It will not work, because the ribbon cable connector is a different shape than the connector on the original drive.
Local Apple store tried to order a ribbon cable that would work, but determined there is no such cable:  there is just no way to connect the UJ-867A to this MBP.
They kindly offered to get me a drive that will work from Apple, but $180 seems a little steep to me.  I asked them for the model / part number of this new drive, but they have so far declined.
Does anyone know with certainty what drive I should be looking for?  The MBP is late 2007, model # A1226.
    Thanks.

  • Late 2007 Macbook Pro HELP!!!

    Hello Everyone!
I'm new to this forum and looking for any help possible due to my lack of tech. savvy knowledge. We have a Macbook Pro late 2007 model and we are attempting to connect this laptop to our new television in order to stream online movies, etc. This is the following t.v.:

    This is the following Laptop:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/sp13
With all the available cords and connectors available on the Apple website, does anyone know which cord I will need to buy to be successful in watching streaming movies on my television. And whether or not this is even possible.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

For video you would need either a DVI to HDMI cable or a DVI to VGA cable. Either one would work based on the inputs the TV has.

  • Black screen after upgrading ram (macbook pro late 2007)

    Dear Community,
I am willing to donate 100 USD to anyone who is willing/able to provide concrete resolution to this problem.
I am a professional freelance videoeditor and my job is currently stucked due to inability to boot my macbook pro again.
After upgrading the RAM of my MBP (late 2007 model, 17'' display, Intel 2.4GHz Dual Core processor), the screen went black and the system did not boot any more.
    I tried to replace the orginal 2 x 1GB DDR2 533 CL=5 SODIMM (single rank) with 2  X 2GB DDR2 800 CL=6 SODIMM (dual ranks).
After the memory upgrade, the system was restarted, I heard a short beep, but the macbook showed a black screen instead of booting properly. The mainboard was powered, the fan was moving. I saw a green led turned on on the center of one side of the macbook.
I tried to mount the previuos 2 x 1GB DRAM SODIMMs, but nothing happened. The system keeps not booting even with the original memory.
I tried already several procedures suggested by the user manual, related to SMC Intel controller reset (with battery and without battery and charger), but those were not effective in restoring the normal operation of the macbook. The system keeps not booting with exactly similar issues (black screen, fan on, short beep after power-on, green LED on).
I also tried to swap the memory DIMMs into the memory sockets. I tried to use a different combination with 1 NEW 2GB and 1 OLD 1GB  DIMM. But the problem is still there with similar sympthoms.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY CLUE OF HOW TO SOLVE THIS?

My best guess is that you have fried the RAM with static electricity charged up in your body. According to OGELTHORPE a beep on startup is because of no RAM, if when installing you did not do it correctly, you could have fried the RAM, which then your mac will not recognize it. The same with the old RAM, if you tried to re-install it and didn't pull up your sleeve and rest your arm on the inside of the chassis, then it is fried, or if you didn't wear an ESD band and connect it to the the chassis, then it is fried.
Seen as though you can't startup your mac, I can't say to do an AHT, buy some new ram, and start with the lowest one you can, so its cheap for ya use a different company incase is that;) Crucial.com is really good, I got an 8gb upgrade from 2gb. Let me tell you, it's great!
    Reply back;)

  • Can I install a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB into the new iMac late 2013?

    Hi There,
    1)   Can a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD be installed in the new iMac late 2013 model?  (My plan is to remove the existing 1TB HDD and replace with the Samsung SSD)
1.1)  I have heard somewhere, even though it will fit, Apple's logic board firmware will pick up the non-apple product and render the iMac useless until original hard drive is reinstalled.
1.2)  If it will work, will I loose my warranty on iMac?  Note, the SSD will be installed by an Apple authorized workshop.
    2)     Can 2x 2.5 sata drives be installed in the iMac?
2.1)  I know the iMac only has 1x SATA and 1x PCIe slot, but can one not install a PCIe - SATA converter and also a 2x 2.5 drive bay in the place of the existing         3.5" drive?
    Thanks for your assistance.
    Regards,
    asdutoit

I checked on the Samsung website and the 840 Pro is OSX compatible and should work in your MBP.

  • Snow Leopard on late 2007 Macbook?

I have a late-2007 model Macbook. Is it possible to run Snow Leopard 10.6.8? I just updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 7 and was told that I then had to update iTunes to v11.1, which requires an OS update from my current 10.5.8. I know I can't run Mountain Lion, but can I use Snow Leopard on this machine?

Yes, Snow Leopard will run on all MacBooks. The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.
