I believe that VIA IDE Miniport driver is only required in four cases, when you have either :
- An IDE Zip drive, under all Microsoft operating systems, with a 686b
southbridge chip
- An ATA100 hard drive with Windows 2000 prior to Service pack 1
- An ATA133 hard drive under Windows 2000 and Windows XP
- An IDE Zip drive under Win2K

Hi transfered my i tunes liberary via a hard drive to my new laptop. It wont let me play anything I've bought from i tunes saying computer is not registered. i have registered it and when i go through the register process it says it is registered?

Is it a USB hard drive? USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice. Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem. If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time. I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

Installing New IDE Hard Drive.

I can not get my G3 to find and IDE hard drives. I can start up from a 10.2 cd and into os 9.2 but can not fid the added hard drive. Can anyone help

In addition the excellent advice already provided, here are some additional items:
First, to support two devices per ATA channel under OS9, you must have a Beige G3 ROM Rev 2 or 3. In OS9, select Apple System Profiler from the Apple menu. On the first page, look for the section labeled "Production information" and click the disclosure arrow to expand if needed. There will be an entry for "ROM Revision." If this code is not $77D.40F2, OS9 cannot support more than one device on each of your two ATA channels. This limitation is said to go away under OSX.
If you have a Rev 2 or 3, physically attach the extra hard drive to the same ribbon cable that serves the original hard drive. The original drive should be set as "master" via jumper settings (charts available at the drive manufacturer's web site) and the extra drive as "slave." Typically, the master drive is at the end of the ribbon cable and the slave uses the middle connector.
For maximum performance, do not mix fast devices (hard drives) and slow devices (CD-ROMS; internal ZIPs, etc) on the same channel. A slow device sharing a channel with a fast one can slow the fast device.
My Beige G3 has the following arrangement;
ATA0: Master-Maxtor 120GB HD
Slave-Maxtor 80GB HD
ATA1: Master-CD-R optical drive
Slave-internal ZIP 100
Works great with that set-up.

New VIA driver pack

VIA Hyperion 4in1 v4.46, released 10 March 2003 is available... almost, on VIA's web site. Both http and FTP links have shown to be dead or alive this morning, not to mention slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I have no idea what is included in the update, as that link was DOA all morning.

New ATA/IDE Drive - Mac OS X Won't Mount the Drive!

Hello out there!
I have a problem- I installed a new 80GB WD ATA drive to my old PM G3 - everything went in smoothly, hooked it up to the "Ultra ATA" slot on the motherboard, and booted. (It is now the only disk, set to Master - jumpers, not cable select)
The main objective is to get out of OS 8/9 and get into X. I put in the OS X install disc, and get all the way to "Select Destination" - the drive is no where to be seen.
I went into the installer logs, says that the drive didnt mount, and it tried again, then gave up.
I then went into Disk Utility, click on the Disk, saw the Volume didnt mount... Erased the Disk, to Mac OS X E - and it appeared to erase - but - still no mount...
I have erased the Disk too... still no mount, the computer clearly knows the disk is there, but wont mount the volume.
Never had a problem like this before, and you guys are so impressive!

Without the 646U2-402 chip on your motherboard, you have the "Heartbreaker" Blue & White G3. When upgraded to a Hard Drive faster than the original 4, 6, or 8 GB drives that shipped with the units originally, they become flaky -- producing crashes, freeze ups, and eventually disk corruption. But never repeatable enough to diagnose a firm problem.
The solution for most users has been to install a PCI Hard drive Controller, IDE or SCSI at your option, and live happily ever after. (Recently, the cheapest Mac-specific IDE Controllers have been new at NewEgg.com. The cheapest bootable SCSI is the used Apple/ATTO UL2D).
"Happily Ever After" that is, until you try to transfer large amounts of data over FireWire. At which point you may be forced to install a controller for FireWire to get satisfaction in using that Bus. Oh, and the Blue & White can not share its drives over FireWire using FireWire Target Disk mode, either.

Help or tips on config new Mac Pro hard drives

Been saving for over a year and just bought a new Mac pro. The day after MacWorld with no upgrade announced ☹.
My configuration is the 2x 2.8Gh quad-core processors, 2 GB of RAM, ATI Graphic card (standard), and a 1TB hard drive in the first hard drive bay.
I am upgrading for the original 1 processor G5 (sounds so slow now). I am planning on taking my 1TB hard drive from that machine which contains my entire iTunes library, and its full! Mostly of legally ripped DVDs and TV shows.
I am planning on configuring my hard drives like so.
Drive Bay 1: 1TB drive, I am considering partition it so there are about 400 gigs on a boot drive for applications and libraries and using the other 400 or so gigs left over as a drop box for things from my over full iTunes hard drive. (TV shows which have ended, so the tags won’t be changed)
Drive Bay 2: 1TB, or 500 gigs depending on the price I get for a hard drive. If it’s a 1TB I will just have it mirror the drive in bay 1. If its 500 gigs, I will have the iTunes “drop box” mirrored in drive 2 and use my time capsule to back up the OS, applications and libraries.
Drive 3 will be my currently full TB hard drive from my current machine and drive 4 will be a TB drive as an exact mirror for back up purposes.
Can I set up these mirrors I want with time machine? Also I have never partitioned a drive, I know you can do it in disk utility, is it a pretty self-explanatory process?
Is this set up of drives a good idea? A RAID seems too costly and just too much since I am not worried about response times of the drives, as long as my media plays properly I am generally happy. I do some work in PS and FCE but not enough to warrant percent scratch disks and RAIDed drives. I also read about a back up program called SuperDuper but it seems like time machine can do anything I would need super duper to do so is it worth the 30 bucks.
Also I have never used migration assistant, is that fairly painless or am I better off just syncing what I can with Mobile Me, and brining the rest of the things I need over VIA external hard drive? (Documents and pictures and such)
I haven’t gotten a new Mac in 5 years so are there any other tips you recommend when setting up my OS? I read somewhere to create an Admin profile that you never use for log in, and than your own profile? Just simple things like that. I have been browsing my old Macworld magazines looking for small tips!

I've had my MP just a few months, and like you I've filled the drive bays in no time.
I keep on top of things using two pieces of software;
CarbonCopyCloner - this runs two nightly 'incremental' bootable Clones of my OSX/iTunes/iPhoto 'System' HD, one to an internal drive, one to an external FW800 D2.
ChronoSync - This I use for everything else, work in progress & archives etc - During and towards the end of my jobs (I'm a photographer), I will use ChronoSync to perform perfectly synced Backups to external FW800 D2s and will soon be purchasing a NewerTech Voyager Q to facilitate the use of bare HDs for rotational backups.
Time Machine isn't a program I've looked into and frankly the way I work doesn't really require that 'Archive' backup style.

Sony IDE DVD Drive not being recognized

I recently upgraded my computer a bit with this new motherboard, ram, video cards, power supply. I used my older dvd drive that was working in my last computer. It is currently connected via IDE ribbon, but it does not show up in my computer or when I put in a CD does not auto run.
The unit does have power to it ( The eject button works, light on front blinks a little )
In BIOS I tried changing the IDE primary from AUTO to DVD/CD Drive and it still did not work.
Any suggestions ? Buy a new dvd drive that is SATA ?

Also check the jumpers on the IDE optical drive so as they are set in Master mode as its the only IDE device in the system, assuming that you have a SATA hard drive, or if your hard drive is also an IDE one then you have to set the jumper to run as a Slave mode.

Duplicate photos appearing when I transfer via a jump drive...

I transferred photos from a PC to my new Mac via a jump drive, one this was complete each of my photos had a corresponding folder attached to it that contained 2 duplicates of the photo I transferred. Any idea why this happens and how I can prevent this happeningagain???

Thank you for providing so much information about what is going on. It sounds like you have setup iTunes to save new content to your new external hard drive in iTunes>Preferences, but it sounds like iTunes is not opening iTunes Library.itl file on the new external drive. You have one last step to take to have iTunes point to your new external hard drive rather than your old one:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see the following screen:
Additional information
If you do not see the screen above, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work.
Once you select "Choose Library," you will need to navigate to the iTunes Library.itl file on your new external drive.

Can I use time machine to back up via a hard drive connected by USB to a BT HomeHub router? Is there a better way to back up and store files than via the USB port on my new MacBook Pro? I'd like storage to be accessible from my earlier version MacBook too.

I think you want to make backups without connecting a hard disk via USB. In other words, you want to have the data storage be shared in your home wirelessly.
If this is the case, I recommend using a Time Capsule.
Time Capsule works great with Time Machine. You can set up all your devices to automatically make backups on the Time Capsule wirelessly and effortlessly.

Can I format an IDE Hard Drive from Mac Pro?

I use a mid - 2012 Mac Pro; run Mavericks OS X 10.9.2.
1. Can an IDE hard drive (using an external drive) be formatted to 10.9.2, from my Mac Pro using Mavericks? (the IDE hard drive is new/unformatted).
2. Once formatted to 10.9.2, can I reformat the IDE hard drive to Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8, from my Mac Pro using Mavericks?
3. If so, would should I do to accomplish Question # 2 above?

The version of the OS that is running is not relevant to formatting the drive. When you format a drive in any OS, you should select "Mac OS extended journaled." (That is, unless you plan to share the drive with a Windows computer.) Formatted this way, the drive can be used with any version of Mac OS.
You do not have to reformat the drive each time you connect it with a different OS.

NEW VIA Chipset 4in1 Drivers for KT4AV BAD

Ok heres the problem. I have a KT4AV-L motherboard and I wanted to update the VIA Chipset 4in1 Drivers. While I was installing it and when it reached 100%, the screen went black and wouldn't boot back up. I had to hit the restart button to reboot Windows again. Doesn't anyone also have this problem with the new VIA Chipset 4in1 Drivers V4.51 on the KT4AV motherboard?

I haven't heard of this, but I know if not installing under Safe Mode the driver install often hang at the last percent.
