New video format on older Mac

I'm looking at getting a new camcorder that has ACVHD format, but I have a G4 powerpc (tower) that runs at 400 Mhz and has 800 RAM. iMovie 3. Can I download, or am I nuts? Will it just take a long time, or is it impossible? Thanks.

You need at least iMovie 08 to work with AVCHD. iMovie 08 will not install on anything less than a G5.

  • Top two best video cards for older Mac Pros?

I have some older Mac Pro towers that vary from:

    2 x 2.93 GHz 6 Core Intel Xeon
Looking for at least the top two video cards that are tried and tested that would work best with at least Premiere Pro and AME. I just need to narrow down the unwieldy list that can be found here: http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/tech-specs.html

Are you adverse to using aftermarket cards that have been converted to work properly in a Mac?  If you aren't, then I'd recommend talking to Dave @ MacVidCards because he can cook you up an nVidia 700-series card that will boot properly in a Mac Pro, run at PCI-E 2.0 speeds, and work wonderfully in Pr/AME.

  • Help with new airport express on older MAC

How can I use a new airport express on an older MAC?  I am not able to install the new airport utility software because the MAC software is too old.  Can I install the airport software on my newer PC.  Will the older MAC be able to fist it and use it with AirPlay?

You can run Airport Express on v10.4 or later.

I use mine with two older laptops, one running Tiger, one running Leopard, as well as newer Macs running Snow Leopard.
Try installing the software from the CD. If there's a problem, you should see a dialog box.

  • IChat video between 2 older Macs

Mom has an older G3 350mhz iMac that has Panther installed (probably has iChat 2, eh?). USB 1.1 here and no firewire. This computer is connected to a cable modem.
I have a 450mhz G4 Cube currently running Tiger with iChat 3.x The Cube has a firewire port and I have a JVC DV camcorder (that I know works with iMovie). I may get a usb 1.1 camera for the cube instead of having the JVC hooked up on a tripod all the time. This machine is connected via DSL.
Just curious if there's a chance we could video conference (even if it is choppy).
Also, is the free AIM option potentially slower if AIM gets bogged down? I can recall using yahoo chat and doing this under os 9.x and I think yahoo chat itself was slowing the connection down.
Is there an easier more direct way to do this with another program (to get a faster connection) instead of having to rely on AIM or .mac - like a way (a program) to connect the computers directly to each other on the net via ip addresses or the like.

    Hi mjp29,
    You have a slim chance.
This Utility http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/ can make USB cams work for iChat (Providing they have Mac drivers as well).
The slowest Mac I have read this working for is a G3/400 so it is going to be tight.
RAM is going to be important here as is not running any other application.
If the JVC has a 6 pin to 6 pin firewire connection and it's output is in DV format your end is good to go.
The cable and DSL connections only make a difference if they themselves are too slow.
The Min up and down for 1-1 chats is 100kbps.
Average is at least a 256kbps upload speed.
Multi-chatting in Tiger requires at least 384Kbps in both direction and this should be where you should be aiming at to help this as much as possible.
Quicktime 7 and the H264 codec is what controls the amount of data in each frame and the frame rate based on what your connection speed and processor are capable of.
    At the G5Quad processor level that is 30 frames a sec in a window 640 x 480
You MAY get 10fps from your Cube. Less with a USB cam as the processor has to run that as well.
Whether the G3/350 can maintain that will depend on the RAM they have.
As I have said this is going to be very tight and may actually be the step too far.

  • Need help installing new itunes version on older mac for nano syncing

I purchased a new nano and new music, but can't get the nano sync because desktop mac is requesting me to upgrade the iTunes version.
When I do, it says "This update requires OS X version 10.7.5 or later." How does this get done?

Which exact model computer?  To get more information about your computer, go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac", then "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).

Basically you're stuck unless you can upgrade OS.  There's no other way to transfer music to the device.

  • New Video Cards for 2008 Mac Pros?

We have three Mac Pros bought in 2008.  It is possible to replace their ATI Radeon HD2600 XT cards with OpenCL-compatibles?  The cards are the only things barring using Final Cut Pro X on the Mac Pros.

OS X has drivers in 10.6.5
It is the ROM firmware that makes it work though there is help there too now for PC cards and flashing.

  • Best video format for mac and pc

    Hello,
I recently embeded an mpeg video, flv, mp4, and swf video file to my web page. I then asked several pc users to go to my page and see if they could view the animation clips. They were were able to view all clips, but the mpeg and flv clips automatically downloaded to their computer. I don't want that to happen. The mp4 did not download, and it worked as well.
How do I stop this from happening? I ask becuase it seems flv is used by mac and pc users alike, and I think I may use said format.
What is the most widely used video format by both mac and pc users?
... should I just stick with mp4 since it worked without down loading?
    rekh
    code i used...
    <iframe width="410"
      height="357"
      src="http://www.mysite.tv/myfolder/myfile.mp4"
      frameborder="0"
      allowfullscreen=""></iframe>

Colin has pointed you in the correct direction.
I'll bet you're using just plain text "links" to your files. That method by-passes the browser plug-in and can cause issues (especially on Windows).
You need solid html code that gives the browser plug-in all of the needed instructions.
Another thing that may have happened is that your fast start files have lost their fast start abilities. This happens with any fast start file that is then edited and uses a regular "save". Save As will restore the fast start feature (even in files that do not normally have it).
AVI is dead. Do not use it.
Many WMP formats (codecs) are not yet ported to the Mac OS so that delivery container should also be ruled out.
H.264 Video codec (default in most Tiger app exports) also requires the viewing machine (Mac or PC) have QuickTime version 7 installed.
Since not all machines can install QT version 7 (requires 10.3.9 or Win 2000 or XP) maybe you should rule it out, too.
    So.
    What are we left with?
Maybe QuickTime format using MPEG-4 Video codec and AAC audio?
They would only require QuickTime version 6 be installed. Since version 6 has been around for over 5 years it may be your best option.
But you're still going to get complaints from PC viewers.

  • New mac mini server: Install OS on older Mac Mini?

I have an UBUNTU server running on the network and was thinking of replacing it with the new Mac Mini Server edition. I also have an older (2009 - intel) Mac Mini.
I was wondering if I could install the OS X Server OS that comes with the NEW mini on the OLDER Mac Mini and reformat the newer server as a "normal" workstation.
I can deal with the optical drive issue. I'm just wondering if the OS X Server software is tied to the newer hardware in any way.
I'd be saving about $300 this way - not a big deal but still worth it. The "traditional" way would be to buy an new Mac mini as a workstation and a copy of Mac OS X Server for the older Mac Mini

No. That OS can only be installed on the Mac model it shipped with.

  • 27 LED monitor and older Mac Pro compatability

Will the new monitor work with older Mac Pro's?

Why does the Apple store list the ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro as only the Early 2008 & Early 2009 models?
Only Apple knows, but the comments section, and many posts here, show it works in any Mac Pro/
I'd like to use the new 27" LED with my original 2006 Mac Pro 1,1. I currently have the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT.
You can use it with the dual-link DVI port (only one port is dual-link) on the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT with a converter
    <http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-Dual-Link-DVI-to-Mini-DisplayPort-Converter-USB-Po wered.html>
The ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit says it's only compatible with the Mid 2010 version.
There are reports that it also will work in any Mac Pro.

  • YouTube new videos

Is there some way to enable "New Videos" in the Subscriptions section of YouTube on Apple TV? It's not as easy to use as the iPad app. The layout is inconvient.

I've had the same problem. None of my new videos, and some older ones from the same subsriptions, no longer load -- even though I was able to view them before 3.0. Error message is "Syndication of this video was restricted by its owner." I can view these same videos on my Mac.
Example: Can anyone view this channel's videos on their iPhone? http://www.youtube.com/vaticano
I have contacted the channel owner, but have not yet received a response. I read online that this was neither an iPhone nor a subscription problem, but rather something on YouTube's end. Does anyone have any updated information on this problem and its solution?

  • YouTube "New Videos" Never Load

I've posted a previous thread on this issue but it hasn't gone anywhere. Since I upgraded to 3.0 on the hour it was released, I have been unable to view my latest subscription videos in the native YouTube app. It shows my subscriptions but the thumbnail to the left of "New Videos" is blank and clicking it reveals a "YouTube Not Available" error. Every single time. Since iPhone 3.0 came out.
Is anyone else experiencing this bug? Are there any known solutions?

  • I was given a 2010 17" MacBook Pro. I want to reset it to new and then migrate only SOME of my data from my older Mac Book Pro to the newer one. How?

A friend gave me a 17" MacBook Pro used for only one project. (Lucky me) I want to reset/register the laptop as new and need to know how to do that.
    THEN...
I need to migrate data from my older Macbook Pro to the newer one. I don't want to migrate all of the data. I have been moving data from one computer to another for 15 years and want to move only what is current and what I now need (Good-bye Quark files)--can I do that? How? Also, the older laptop is running Lion. The "new" one is running Leopard. Is that an issue? Do I need to upgrade the newer laptop to Lion first?
    Thanks.

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
Unfortunately, Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant are set up to migrate your entire Home folder, third-party applcations and support files, and system preferences. If you use the Setup Assistant that opens the first time you boot Lion after installing, then you should migrate your Home folder, etc. This is the easiest way to do it.
Once migration is finished you can delete what you don't want.
