New video problems after replacing bad cap

We are attempting to repair our first gen IMac G5 after it started having a problem with randomly shutting down. After much online research, and everything pointing towards bad capacitors, we opened up the machine and sure enough there was a bulging cap. We did the LED tests as well (fine), and ran hardware test (which also pointed to a problem on the logic board). After ringing the local Apple tech and confirming that they would only replace the whole board, not individual capacitors, we found a repair shop locally that was willing to solder on a new cap for us.
So we've put the whole machine back together today, and again the LEDs light fine. However, now, the video is totally messed up! It starts up as far as the login screen but it'd be impossible to log in as the screen is so badly scrambled.
Now we're trying to decide what the culprit is--incorrect reassembly? Accidental damage to the video cable during disassembly/assembly? Static electricity zapped the board at some point? Replacement cap not good enough (it's got a much higher uF and voltage rating but that seems to not be critical)?
Any pointers on how to proceed? We're loathe to throw in the towel just yet!

Don't throw in the towel, take it back to your local tech and have her replace the cap with one of the proper rating.

Macbook Pro eligible for replacement through Apple program.
Submitted my computer 2 days before program came into effect.
They replaced card or logic board with same original model: AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB
Issued me a refund check for my repair.
Seems to have some noticeable issues, fan running more than usual again, and temporary graphic lines,
but disappear too fast before a screen dump...
Is anyone who has participated in the replacement program received a different graphic card for
Model Macbook Pro 17" (late 2011)
    Thank you for the reply.

Unfortunately I have yet to call AppleCare because I am on a project for 3 weeks and cannot be without my laptop during that period....
Until that time I am trying to figure out what I can do to protect the Palm Rest/Mouse Pad area of my Macbook once they either fix it or give me a new one. Has anyone had any experience with either of these products that can provide some input as to whether they are good or bad?

  • Random shutdown problem after replacement of new MB

i got the replacement of my MB one month ago due to the random shut down problem. the symptom before the replacement was not only random shut down but also that the MB could not be turned on once a while.
now it's been one month after i got the replacement from apple store, there is no randon shutdown at all, but when i got up this morning, i couldn't turn it on. i tried several times, but it just turned out to be dead. any suggestion about what i'm supposed to do? shall i ask for a refund or a replacement? i'm just afraid of that i would get a defect model again.

    thanks for both replies.
i usually close the MB when the shutdown is completed, i know the shutdown won't be completed if i close it right after i shut it down.
and also, i got a whole new mb as a replacement from apple store rather than having it repared and just the logical board replaced. and it's really weird, since it was said the new logical board doesn't have whatsoever problem. i also read some news on tuaw or infiniteloop (i forgot which one it is), the RSS is not really caused by the faulty logical board, it was the heat sink melt by the high temperature coming from the intel processor which shortcut the circuits around it. now i'm totally desperated. it looks like unless apple drops the stupid intel chip, otherwise the RSS will never go ever.

  • Cannot download or watch old or new video podcasts after iTunes directory reorg

I just installed itunes 10.6.1.7. on a new PC connected an external hard drive containing my itunes library and pointed to my library on an external hard drive. That seems to have worked fine except for the issue described below.
I also did reorganization of my library structure via "organize library" menu option. The reorg left all video podcasts in the old podcast folder and will not let me copy them to the new podcast folder. I have podcasts that are all video podcasts and some that are mixed audio podcasts and video podcasts. In both cases the video podcasts remained in the original or old folder location. In the case of the mixed video and audio it just left the video episodes in the old folder and moved the audio podcasts.
If I select a new video podcast from the itunes store and download it, I cannot view it in itunes. An example of a new video podcast I attempted to download is  "MinutePhysics". The podcast will display as one of my podcasts in itunes but the file or episode has a "GET" button next to it and never shows it as available to view in itunes. It looks like it is downloading to my hard drive but after it downloads I cannot locate the file in any directories.
In Advanced Preferences on the Advanced tab I have checked and unchecked "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and that does not make a difference checked or unchecked.
The video podcasts are not in movies or in tv shows. All music is present and accounted for that I know.
How can I restore all video podcasts previously downloaded and view them on itunes or an ipod?
Can I create a video podcast option in itunes?
    Please help.

Issue solved - It turns out that the QuickTime version on my PC was 6.5 and I needed to update to version 7.6 or higher to allow videos to play in iTunes. I updated to QuickTime version 7.7 and then added the old podcast folder to iTunes while in podcasts. This found all video podcast content and then the auto reorg moved all folders to the new podcast directory. For the videos I manually moved earlier, I had to move (not copy) them back to the old directory or folder then add that old folder and they were now in the right directory and viewable in iTunes. Thanks for the reply.

  • Video problems after 10.0.5 update

Ever since I updated to Final Cut Pro X 10.0.5, all of my video has a green tinge at various places during the playback. Not sure how to correct it. It happens on my existing projects and new video I import. Here is an image of what I'm seeing, but it changes constantly upon movement within the clips. Any help would be appreciated. I tried transhing preferences, but this didn't help.
    Thanks,
    Steve

Thanks Tom. that was it. I had my display calibrated to match my photo prints, so switching it back to default solved the issue.
    Thanks again!

  • IMac Still Has Video Problems after Upgrade

I did the firmware and software upgrade to my iMac, which was supposed to fix the video problem, however the problem continues. I am using OS 10.4.11. My computer never "froze" however the screen went haywire. I would have to do a soft restart (if I could find the restart dropdown window) or I would have to do a hard restart. Now I can do a screen refresh to do a soft restart.
Is Apple aware the these Intel iMacs are a POS? I use it for 3D design and I can't work more than 10 minutes before my screen starts going wacko. I've used Macs since 1985 and this is the first POS Mac i've owned. I don't want to have to get another computer, I can't afford it.
Any others out there with the same problem? Any solutions?
    Thanks

I like AppleCare, as you get three years of that unlimited phone support. I know many consider it just another extended warranty, but note it can be legitimately purchased at a discount.
Amazon, retail computer stores, also a number of sellers abound online and on eBay, and a price mentioned by someone else on here two years ago that hasn't changed since then - check out L. A. Computer Company, online - you might be surprised!

  • Video problems after RAM upgrade

I recently upgraded my ram from 1GB to 2GB DDR2 667 MHz and everything looks fine with regards to recognizing the RAM and starting up. However, I recently started to notice some video problems in certain areas. For example, my VLC player has problems playing back video now, and it shows a black screen for the video for some avi files but plays back the audio fine. Some games, like Plants vs Zombies, play audio and not the video as well. Has anyone else had this problem?

Don't know anything about 4AllMemory.  But they do indeed have a small Mac section listed.  Hard to tell if the memory listed is specifically for your model.  Also not obvious if they have lifetime warrantees too.
As for OWC's page.  Yes, that 4GB selection, which if you clicked on it would take you here, is memory that will work on your 3,1.  The only real difference between it and the one listed below it for a few dollars more is that the latency of the ram.  You probably woudn't even notice the difference (cas 4 vs. cas 5).

  • A few iPhone 4S problems after replacement

Let me start by saying, my iPhone is not unlocked or modded in any way...So yesterday I received my replacement 4S. I have iCloud, and everything is synced and backed up. I also have iTunes match.
When I restored my new 4S with iCloud, for some reason, my songs were not put back on my phone. Instead, they were all in the cloud. I have over 5k songs. I had just went through the ones I wanted to keep on my old phone and which I wanted in the cloud. After which, I backed up (successfully) to the cloud. So, logically, after I restored my new 4S, everything should have went back to where it was on my old phone. So I took my old phone, and backed it up to my computer. Again, I restored from the backup on my new 4S. Same story.
Now, not only do I have to go through all my songs and redownload them from the cloud, but now almost every time I unlock my iPhone, it asks for my AppleStore Password. Oh, and none of my playlists are on my phone as of this morning (though they were when I went to bed last night).
None of this was a problem on my past phone. But all of a sudden, the switch from my one 4S to the other, just didn't go well. And I've done this for both my wife and my dad, and both worked flawlessly. But for some reason, mine is really screwy.  And now I am having another ******* problem with my iPhone. It seems to all be focused around the music. Some artists are reading "Unknown" even though all the info is right on both my computer and my old iPhone.
Yet another problem I am having, is some of the songs will not play. It shows that it is playing in the top bar, the icon control shows that it is playing, but the timer bar doesn't move and there is no sound. What the **** is going on with this phone?! I'm tempted to send this new one back, keep my old one, and start this process all over again, because this is ridiculous!

  • RE: Video problems after disconnecting DVI to VGA adaptor...

I was playing a game (C&C Generals) the other day on Vista with an external monitor connected via the DVI to VGA adaptor. During the game, I decided to move my MBP so I disconnected the adaptor. The screen started flickering and I had to reset the MBP. After resetting, I tried to re-launch the game, but an error popped up saying that I don't have DirectX 8.1 or greater (actually, I have DirectX 10) or don't have a supported video card (I have Nvidia 8600 GT). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Bootcamp drivers and resetting my PRAM, to no avail. Any ideas? I tested my MBP on other games (e.g. Company of Heroes) and it works fine -- the only time the video card gives me trouble is when I try to launch C&C Generals!
    Thanks for any help!

I recently upgrade to a macbook pro after my macbook crashed, when I got it home I went to plug in my DVI to VGA cable to find out the port had been changed and i needed to purchase an other one for my new mac. Spent the 20 buck all over again got it home plugged it in and no image on my TV. It seems you need to be a computer scientist to get this to work. Why was this port changed to something that does not work when the previous on worked so perfectly just plug and play????????
Yes blaming your MBP is your first step, but completely illogical. Have you checked the System Preferences>Display? Have you set it up correctly?
Plug and Play, does not mean that an ancient monitor (anything on VGA is several generations ago) will automatically take over your MBP to create the perfect profile. You need to fix things.

  • Problems after replacing LCD screen

I fell over and cracked the screen to my ipod nano 3rd gen. (also broke my arm but that was easier to fix!). Ive just bought a new lcd screen for it and followed all the directions on how to install it. The problem im having now is it all appears to be connected right but the screen just flashes white to black and beeps. It was only recognised on my laptop as "no name" not as an ipod. Could someone please help and let me know what i have done wrong? Before replacing the screen my ipod still worked perfectly. Thanks in advance!

Thanks man. I will take a look at it later on tonight and see what happens. From my understanding some of these LCD's have the airport built-in or is it the antenna? I think mine is one of those, But it looked like the antenna just runs on the side of the casing for the LCD display which is still intact as I only removed the actual LCD screen. I'm gonna see if the connector is in fact not pushed in all the way although I never touched it.

  • Palm T/X will still not turn on after replacing bad battery! Help!

Have had this Palm T/X since December '07 and when it was working I had absolutely no problems or issues.  One day at work, I noticed that it felt unusually hot in my pocket and found that it had been switched on accidently and who knows how long it had been running.  I had to hit reset to get it to respond and turn off.   Got home to recharge it and it has never turned on since.  That was about 8 months ago.
I took it in to a reputable dealer and had the battery changed.  The tech related to me that the old battery was shorted out and non functional.  Unfortunetly even with the new battery and sitting on the charger for hours it is not responding to the power switch nor to any attempt at a hard or soft reset.  What can cause this?  Is my T/X dead forever?  Now this was a gift so I'm not afraid to invest in some replacement parts, I just need to appeal to those more knowledgable to brainstorm some other potential injuries!  Thank you in advance for your time and suggestions!
    Post relates to: Palm TX

I would suggest you talk with the reputable dealer about the problem - it sounds like the problem lay deeper than just the battery!
From this side of the computer screen, we have no way of telling what went wrong!
Water damage, physical damage from being dropped/flexed, plugged into a higher voltage than recommended, we just can't guess, sorry!

  • Sound/Video Problem after Downloading iTunes 10.5

I recently downloaded the most recent iTunes update, 10.5. After downloading it, I am having problems with the sound and picture of television shows. When I try to watch a tv show, the sound is muffled, and the picture slows or skips constantly. This happens on every tv show I've tried to play, not just one. I haven't noticed any problems with sound from songs though. I had this problem once before after downloading the previous version of iTunes, and completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes to solve the issue, and it worked. However, I tried doing it once again this time, and there was no success. I've tried disabling sound enhancements, and that also had no effect. Quicktime is installed and updated as well. I'm running Windows 7. Any help or advice is appeciated.

I'm not sure I quite understand what you mean. iTunes doesn't save a folder of playlists, but if you mean that the iTunes library is empty, or doesn't contain playlists that it had before the upgrade then either restore your backup or make use of the following...
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps youshouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Video problems after coming out of sleep mode

    Here's my setup:
Apple TV connected to HDMI switch (Rocketfish) then to Samsung DLP TV.
If I turn everything off and then later in the day try to watch the Apple TV, I get sound, but no picture. I shouldn't say "no picture" as the TV detects input (ie, not showing the "no input" screen)... just a black screen.
I can hear the Apple TV as I move through the menu by using the remote, but again... no picture.
I've tried power cycling the switch and the TV to no avail. I've also unplugged and plugged in the HDMI cable (as soon as I unplug the HDMI cable, I get the no signal screen). None of that does anything.
The only thing that works is unplugging the power cable and then plugging it back in. It then re-boots and works fine... until the next time when the exact same stuff happens.
    Anyone have any thoughts?

I was going to write that I have the same problem, but I think I've just found the solution! (If you can call it that…)
It seems that when you switch to the input to the one that the Apple TV is on, a signal is sent through the HDMI cable that automatically wakes the ATV. If you interrupt it with the remote while it's auto-waking, it gets upset and shuts the whole business down. Try this after you've had your ATV asleep for a few hours
1.) Turn on the television/display and make sure it's on the correct input
2.) Turn on the receiver and set it to the input coming from the ATV if it isn't set to that already
3.) Wait at least 30 seconds
This has been working for me. I just tried to replicate it before posting this, but I'd apparently used my ATV recently enough that I needed to wake it with the remote. I still haven't been able to find much consistency in the behavior, but I haven't needed to unplug and replug the device since I started doing this.
Let me know how it goes!
