New Videocard for Mac Pro 3,1 - Xeon 3.2 GHz (X5482) Quad-core processors

Hi guys
Am hoping you can advise me.
Currently I have a
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256 MB of GDDR3 SDRAM (two dual-link DVI ports). It was the card that was already installed at the time of purchase.
I have not had any problems with it at all but as I do a lot of 3D (Cinema 4D) I think I would benefit from something more powerful.
Can anyone recommend a powerful card that would 100% be compatible with my mac spec please?
I have read an Nvidia Quadro FX 5600 is compatible. Does a Quadro 4800 for mac work also or any others?
I look forward to hearing your responses.
Thanks
Sophia

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

Is there not a full 10.7 OS Disc?
There is no official DVD at all, but there is a thumb drive with both 106 and 10.7 on it for US$70.
On an older Mac, about 2010 or older, you need access to one of:
    • The Mac App Store ( such as on a Mac with a working 10.6.8 or better)
    • working Recovery HD
    • a bootable 10.7 Installer, on thumb drive, Hard drive, or DVD
So for ONE 2010 or older Mac with a bad drive, you would have to buy the US$70 Apple thumb drive, or have previously made a DVD or Hard Drive when you previously downloaded 10.7. Or you re-install 10.6.8 then overwrite it with the downloaded 10.7.
    • another Mac with 10.7 installed so you could transfer Recovery HD to the down Mac with "Lion Recovery Disk Assistant"
OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery Disk Assistant
On some 2010 and most 2011 models, if Recovery HD is messed up or not Installed, but you have a working Broadband connection [with DHCP enabled], the Firmware has been upgraded so it will boot from the Internet and do the whole job using "Lion Internet Recovery" as described in the second section of this glossy article:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/recovery/
If no DHCP is available [no Router upstream, either yours or your ISP's], it may not work.

  • Is there any new release for Mac Pro in this few months?

I want to buy a MacBook pro but I'm afraid if I buy it in these few months and it'll have a new release. So I wonder if there's any release for MacBook Pro this soon?

Apple has no set schedule for updating or releasing new hardware and the general rules of the past have pretty much all gone by the wayside these last 2 years. All I can tell you is that speculation about new Apple products is against the terms of service here and that the best time to buy a new computer is when you need it. Waiting to try and get the newest Apple product is a mug's game - just not worth it.

  • 12 core Mac Pro does not improve render time over iMac quad core

I'm rendering the same composition independently on two computers and they are basically rendering at the same rate, which is slightly better than 1 frame per second.
The project settings and preferences are identical in each instance (with the exception of memory and multiprocessing, which I have experimented with ad nauseum). The composition includes no motion blur, no effects, just a couple of layers of chroma keyed .mov files (using keylight 2.0) and some still images. Neither machine is running any other applications, except occasionally Google Chrome, which seems to have no effect on performance.
Both systems are running the latest version of After Effects CC (2014) and using the Classic 3D renderer.
    System 1 MAC PRO:
Mac Pro 12 core 2.7 GHz Intel Xeon E5
dual AMD FirePro 500D 3072 MB GPUs
    32 GB RAM
    OS X 10.9.4
    System 2 iMAC:
iMac quad core 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB GPU
    8 GB RAM
    OS X 10.9.3
As you can see, system 1 is vastly more powerful, and yet no combination of memory/multiprocessing settings can get the system to render faster than system 2.
It doesn't seem to matter how much or little RAM I reserve for other applications (I have settled on 4 GB), or the number of CPUs I reserve for After Effects. The one setting that has improved performance is turning OFF render multiple frames. And even then it only brings the performance of the Mac Pro up to par with the iMac. I have cleared my cache, rebooted the computer, and read everything I can find online regarding the optimization of render settings.
Here's a comparison of the respective CPU Loads:
    iMac
    Mac Pro
With such a low CPU load, After Effects is obviously not utilizing the resources available to it on the Mac Pro. What a waste.
    Can anyone help?

There's plenty of debate about the new Mac Pro vs a kitted out iMac.  Benchmarks show that some iMac After Effects processing can actually be faster than on a Mac Pro, depending on the content and some other factors.  If you're using software that has been optimised for the Mac Pro's GPU-centric architecture, like Final Cut Pro X, you will see great benefits.
    mac pro vs imac
In my own facility recently we opted out of purchasing Mac Pros this year, and bought top-end iMacs instead.  The benefit to cost ratio simply didn't make sense for us right now.  Mac Pros are awesome machines, but a significant component of their cost is the dual GPUs, which are simply no benefit to After Effects.
Reports say that the After Effects engineers are working on a major revamp of the After Effects processing system, so I'm betting you will realise far greater benefits from your Mac pro in coming AE versions.  For now, you may continue to see performance that is not spectacularly better than a souped-up iMac, depending on the type of processing involved.
I've seen a few benchmarks that suggest the 8 core systems give better bang-for-buck than the 12 cores.  Try reducing your processors to 8 in After Effects and see if it makes a difference.  With 8 cores, allocate 3GB of RAM per core to leave some RAM for the OS.

  • Quard Core cpu for Mac pro is coming soon?

Shall I wait? end of this year?

From what I've read about quad core processors, the more cores the lower the Ghz rating, so when Intel does launch their Quad Core Xeon, I would expect it to run at @ 1.6Ghz or 1.83Ghz per core.
If you look at what Apple did with the PowerMac G5, they were using dual core in each model, except the early single CPU machines. When dual core G5 appeared, they dropped one chip from the PowerMac and introduced the G5 Quad.
It would make sense, cost wise, when a quad core chip is available, to replace the dual chip machines with 1 quad core chip. The top of the range configuration could be a dual chip quad core beast running at 1.6Ghz or 1.83Ghz per core.
The only disadvantage of having more and more cores per chip is the shared level 2 cache and a single front side bus per processor (allowing bottlenecks to occur). Again I have read reports that to enhance multiple core performance, the level 2 cache will have to be upwards of 8MB shared, ideally 16MB shared would allow 4MB per core on a quad core. This would help remove the bottlenecking caused by a one chip bus layout as more data is being processed per core.
Should you wait? That is entirely up to you but the way things are going now, it won't be long until 16 core chips or even 32 core chips, then 64 core chips etc are being announced, forever lowering power consumption (heat) and noise, not to mention lowering Ghz - so much for the Ghz war that went on for years! The lowering of Ghz per core will mean your system is much more memory dependant and so with quad core chips and higher, the memory needs of the system will be increased dramatically.
The basic fact of computing is if you want a faster machine you don't need a faster processor, you need more RAM memory. The more you have the faster your machine will run. When your machine is maxed out on memory and isn't up to the job, then it's time to trade up.
I bought a Mac Pro stock 2.66 knowing full well a quad core would be coming. It's a highly capable machine and so far hasn't seemed to slow down whatever I've thrown at it - data wise that is, of course having 6Gb RAM helps in that department too with much more room to expand (another 10Gb's can go in) when I need to.
The decision, as they say is up to you.

  • The new 3.0 Ghz Phenom II X4 940 quad core processor and the K9a2 Platinum

Okay! So I have been looking at this processor for a bit, AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad Core Processor HDZ940XCGIBOX - 3.00GHz, 6MB Cache, 1800MHz (3600 MT/s) FSB, Deneb, Quad-Core, Retail, Socket AM2+, Unlocked Multiplier, Processor with Fan Link=http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4330959
I have the K9A2 Platinum Motherboard. I have updated the Bios to version 1.6. Now I called MSI and Tiger direct and none of them know if this processor will work with my board. Now I did post a previous thread and every one said I should have come here sooner for answers and that is what I am doing. I looked at Cyberpower PC where they are building this spec with the 3.0 ghz Processor and the K9A2. Now I would like to assume that it will work but with the manufacturer and tiger direct not giving the most accurate information I am worried.
I think it will work just fine but I am double checking before I spend the money.
So guys and gals will my motherboard support this new chip? Does any one have the processor running on the MSI K9A2 Platinum? Bios version 1.6?
    Current System Specs
    Vista 64 Bit.
AMD Phenom 9600 2.3Ghz quad core. Liquid cooled
MSI K9A2 Platinum MB Bios Version 1.6
    6Gb of Ram
8800 GT 512mb Dual Monitor Setup
    600 watt power supply
    1x 150gb raptor drive 10,000rpm.
    1x 300gb Raptor Drive 10,000 rpm.

This might help you find the proper bios a bit easier.   http://www.dvhardware.net/article31234.html

  • No Software DVD for Mac Pro?

I just purchased an Apple Mac Pro 3.33Ghz Xeon 6-Core. According to Apple, the new Macs do not come with DVD/CD software. If I want to have a copy of the Mac OS X DVD, I have to burn one myself, right?  Or can I buy a flash drive (thumb drive) Mac OS X from Apple?

No new Macs have DVDs or other media. Your software is on the Internet via Apple's servers.
    Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/
Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button.
Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move
the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
      a. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
      b. After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left
side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      c. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until
          the process has completed.
      d. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side
list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      e. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the
button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
      f. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash
         drive size.
    3. Use Lion DiskMaker 2.0 to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.

  • 2009 Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon Quad Core or 2013 Mac Mini 2.66 Quad Core i7 ?

2009 Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon Quad Core or 2013 Mac Mini Server 2.66 Quad Core i7 ? I have a choice between these two for running Final Cut Pro X. Price is nearly the same.
The Mac Pro has a ePCI 512 display adapter, 16 GB RAM, more hard drive expansion and faster 1tb 7200 rpm conventional hard drive. FW 800.
The Mini Server has two 1 tb 5400 rpm conventional drives, 16 GB RAM and an integrated display adapter. Has thunderbolt and FW 800.
My primary concern is the performance of the processors. Does anyone happen to know how they compare in video editing?

This may give you some ideas.
There are some folks on this forum who report very saticfactory results editing on Minis.
Perhaps they will chime in with first hand experience (which I can't give).

  • ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB for Mac Pro 2.66 Quad Core Xenon

I have the option of picking up an ATI Radeon HD 4870 1 GB graphics card to go with my soon-to-be-new MAc Pro 2.66 Quad core. I see know that Apple can upgrade to ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB, but that card is not available to me at the moment. Will the 1GB do the job without overheating the system? Am new to the Mac Pros. Need it for the Windows gaming portion of the system. Am using the rest for graphics and photography.

If the MAc Pro 2.66 comes with Snow Leopard, why would I have to upgrade my OS?
OK. So, if got the MAc version, it would work A-OK without overheating?
    Thanks for your input!

  • Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon: dual graphic cards problem, caused by Firmware fault?

strange bug with Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon:
    I have two Displays, 20 and 23".
When both connected to the standard NVIDIA card in the Mac Pro, evreything is fine.
I ordered a second NVIDIA card wich I installed in slot 4, using 8 lanes for this card.
Now, when one display is connected to the standard card and the second display is connected to the second NVIDIA card, the screen of the display connected to the build in card (the 16 lanes card) does noet refresh correctly. You can not see what iMovie is displaying for example, iMovie screen is white and does not display what should be on screen.
Sometimes none of the main screen is refresehd (example: Safari content is not updated, while in fact it is!) but the mousecursor moves correctlyon screen.
Also third party software (like FotoMagico) is not updated on screen
Connecting both displays to one card and everything is fine!
A strange bug wich I guess is related to the Mac Pro firmware
I've tried the second NVIDIA card in all the PCI-E slots to see if this makes a difference, it does not.
I used the PCI-E configure tool to vhange the speed of the lanes for the PCI-E slots, also this makes no diffrence.
At this moment my second card is not usable.
This is a problem on all three Mac Pro's we tried this on (2.66 version, 2 machines with 1Gb RAM, 1 machine with 3Gb RAM), latest OS 10.4.7
Starting in safe mode makes no difference on either Mac Pro

Just to clarify what you have: both displays are Apple? 3rd party (Dell etc)? and the 2nd NVIDIA came from Apple, right? because you do need EFI-based video (and BIOS as well for it to work in XP).
What if you try just the 2nd card by itself? and if you attach both monitors to it, does it work normally then? Want to make sure it works by itself.
I would expect it is the drivers that need work.

  • GeForce 7300 GT Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro?? G5?

    Hi,
Just found this on the apple store:
    http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=1643C421&nplm=M A567
"NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro"
Why is it only for mac pro? its PCI express & my g5 is one of the late 2005 models and it has PCI Express so am i wrong in thinking that this should work fine or is it something to do with the new intel architecture?
If i remember correctly i could have chosen this card or a very similar one when i configured my G5.
    Thanks

That card is only for the Mac Pro, as it says.
When you ordered your G5, you had the choice of the nVidia 6600 (or 6600LE), nVidia 7800GT, or the Quadro FX 4500.
The 7800GT that you could have ordered with your G5 is close in performance to the ATi X1900XT that is an option on the Mac Pro. The 7300GT that you're looking at is an entry level card, which the 7800GT definitely is not.
The 7300GT and the X1900XT are both Mac Pro only due to the ROM on the card, which is designed to work with the EFI booting hardware that the Mac Pro uses. The G5s used Open Firmware, which requires a different ROM on the video card. So, even though both your G5 and the Mac Pro are PCI-Express based, these video cards are not compatible.
Now, most PCI-Express cards that you look at for, say, external SATA, will probably work in both the G5 and the Mac Pro. You'd still want to check the specs to be sure, however.
If you're looking for a new video card to replace your (presumably) nVidia 6600, your only real option is the ATi X1900 G5 edition. This is a different card than the X1900XT that's offered for the Mac Pro.
