New w520 has erratic download speeds

I bought a w520 last week. It's a lovely machine, but unfortunately it's frequently had terrible wireless download speeds straight out of the box. Wired, it was 11+ Mbps. Wireless, I've hit a high of 6+ and a low of .2. It is extremely common for me to get between .2 and .75 Mbps. Our two desktops get 6+. Our 8-year old laptop gets 6+ when sitting right next to the new laptop. I've been testing using bandwidthplace.com.
Anyone have any ideas? I've got three weeks to figure this out - that's when NewEgg's return window closes.

Open Power Options (not Manager), go to your usual profile, hit Advanced, and set Wireless Power Saving to Maximum Performance on battery.

WRK54G Wireless has a download speed of 300 kps

Our wireless WRK54G version 1.1 used to have a download speed of 1200 kilobits per second, but for some reason now has a download speed of 300 kilobits per second.
We have high speed DSL. Nothing has changed on board the computer has changed. The router & computer are in the same position. We have uninstalled & reinstalled the software. We have run the Linksys self-fixing software from this site. (3 times) Our signal strength is good. We have been trying to solve this problem now for 8 hours. We have rebooted both the computer and router numerous times. When we hook up the blue cable to the router, we get our 1200 kilobits per second - it is just when we go remote that our download speed goes down to 25% of normal.
To be useful, anyone who replies needs to understand that we know very little about computers. You will have to give us the "dummies" version of what to do.

Thanks for replying. We tried your idea, and although it helped a bit, it didn't solve our problem. Now the router downloads between 550 - 600 kilobites per second. I tested it again with the blue cable attached between the router & computer, and we still get a download speed of 1200 kilobites per second.
To answer your questions:
-The computer is a Toshiba Satellite 1900 laptop that is using a Linksys adapter.
-The distance to the router is approx 5 feet.
-The router is located behind a couch which is backed against a wall. However, the computer is located in the SAME room as the couch.
-The router and the computer have functioned happily in these locations for the past 12 months.
-We regularly test our download speed (1200 is normal) so we know that 600 isn't normal.
Have you got any other ideas?

Not sure whether this is a stupid question (probably!), or I am mis-interpreting the stats displayed by my home hub (5), but is this an indicator that my download rate been capped (I am on an infinity 2 contract btw)?

It looks like I am getting the maximum permissable (allowable?) - if I divide 35000 (Data Rate) by 1024 it results in 34.179 - so the downstream rate appears to tie up with the data rate, but my suspicions lie with the data rate - an exact 35000?
If I run 'speedtest', I get an upload of around 16mb, and download of 32. Likewise the BT performance test, which reports I am getting less than my IP profile, which is set at 33.88.
Two weeks ago I was getting around 44mb down, but faced with the max data rate shown I am getting nowhere near this.

Thats what caught my eye, if there had been a few extra numbers at the end I probalbly wouldn't have picked it up. Funnily enough before I started looking at this, my download rate went a lot higher than it had been previously (almost back up to the highest level I saw after it was first installed), and at the same time (maybe co-incidence but I am suspicious) I noticed a lot of BT engineers out and about in the local area. 2 days later it dropped and I appear to be stuck with the 35000. I have recently upgraded to a HH5 from a 4, but I wouldn't see that as a cause for BT to cap me, unless they now think I am on infinity 1 (though I have just checked my last bill and they are charging me for I2).

Ive purchased a new ipad mini, installed itunes and tried to transfer content from my laptop that includes mp4 movies but its not allowing the movies to be transfered giving me the ipad/iphone message tone when trying to play the movies into the libary. Any help would be great!

Im going to assume the movies themselves were purchsed in itunes...i recommended seeing if itunes can add them itself...in yout music folder on your computer you will see a folder called itunes..do this click on the itunes folder then click on itunes media..in that folder you will see a folder called automatically add to itunes...drag and drop the files into that folder...itunes will read that files and if they are compatible with itunes itunes will auto add them to your library....i recommended closing itunes before you do this itunes will read better if it is closed when you auto add...when you open itunes go movies tab check all the tabs in movies (movies, unwatched, genres, home videos)if you dont see the movies in itunes after soemtime...check the add auto folder again...if you see a folder that says not added check and see if the files are in there if they are they are not compatible with itunes or the ipad and you will need to convert them

Wifi download speed - Z3

Hi, my home WIFI network has a download speed of 70MBPS, when using my Z3, it only has a download speed of 3MBPS. I checked this with a speedtest app before and after a restart of both the phone and the router.
Am I missing something?

Teemboh are you using any bluetooth devices along with the wifi connection. Bluetooth and wifi use the same onboard chip in mobile devices. pairing up a bluetooth device will force the xperia to micro switch between 2 signals to keep both intact (bluetooth and wifi) this results in a huge performance loss on the wifi. and can even cause bluetooth connections to fail when wifi is used to download big amounts of data.
I never understood why manufacturers make one chip for bluetooth and wifi. Yes it uses the same 2.4 GHZ transmission but if both are used there is a tremendous loss of performance on both ends. HQ bluetooth headphones can suffer from stutter if wifi is also used and sometimes the signal drops of the bluetooth. i dont recommend using both at the same time.
This is not only the case with xperia devices but almost all new smartphones.
Havent tried this myself but you could try a 5 GHZ router and connect to this wifi signal. Maybe that helps.
I get 25 Mbit download on my router. when a Bluetooth headset is connected i get a very unstable 3 Mbit. In the time that i had a note 2 i contacted samsung for this problem but they kept saying that it cant be an issue and wifi should work on full speed. but when doing some more research i found the real truth fast enough. wifi and bluetooth really dont like eachother in smartphones

Pages is saying it has been downloaded and installed but it is not on my Mac Book

I have just downloaded Maverick and Pages, keynote and numbers are all saying that a new version has been downloaded and installed but they have changed the software I had already been installed, I know this because my ipad3 has had the new upgrades and the icons have changed.

No, the download doesn't change the older Pages 09. The icons on the older pages documents on the Mac changes but not the Pages 09 application. You still have the application in the Application folder.
What you see on the iPad I can only guess. I don't have an iPad.

Download Speed Capped?

We've had Unlimited Fibre Optic for a few months now and whenever I've downloaded something, whether that be using my browser or programs like Steam etc. to download games, I've never seen my download speed go over 4.5 mb/s however when I do a speedtest, I get over 35 mb/s consistently. Surely this isn't right and I'm starting to think Sky has capped download speed for whatever reason. Any help is appreciated and my router stats are below along with the speedtest.. You are likely confusing megaBITS and megaBYTES.
8 BITS (b) = 1 BYTE (B)
So 4.5megaBYTES per second (4.5MB/s) = ~36megaBITS per second (36Mb/s)
Capital B or lower case b makes a huge difference.
Broadband speeds are (almost) always quoted in megabits per second, web browsers and apps often show speeds as megabytes per second, hence the confusion.

Download speed will slow to nothing. Must continually manually pause and resume to force the connection to the download to complete. How to fix?

Have recently tried to download multiple files from multiple locations. These files will show up as downloading in the download manager. After 5-10 seconds, the download will slow to a crawl. In the window for the download manager, it will state that the download still has a download speed. When reviewing the time and progress, as well as monitoring my actual inbound/outbound internet traffic, I can conclude the download does not have any actual download speed remaining (that is, 0 kilobytes/sec).
To complete the download, I must manually click on the file being downloaded, force it to pause and then force it to resume. This will cause the download to actually download again for about 5-10 seconds before the download manager states that the download speed is slowing down (when in fact it goes back to 0 kilobytes/sec). This process must be repeated until the file is fully downloaded.
Also observed is that there will suddenly be more of a connection, downloading just a bit of the file, before going back to 0 kbps. This will happen every so often and is much slower than manually pausing/resuming. If left to its own devices for long, it also has a chance that it will decide that the file is complete and report that it has the full file size of the download. Review of the actual downloaded file shows that the file is incomplete for the supposed size of the download.
This should not be an issue with internet usage. There is no inbound/outbound traffic for my connection when the download speeds hit 0kbps. Loading webpages during this time load fine, only the download is unstable.

Perhaps the memory clock limit was to address a possible cause of the SSS issue. I've been running 1.37 with Crucial 4x8 gb SODIMMs w/o any issue. They are capable of running at 761MHz but are being clocked at 664.6 Mhz. Not a big deal for me.

Exceedingly slow download speeds on brand new mbp os lion

There seems to be a lot of posted issues with slow download speeds on the MBP. I purchased mine 2 weeks ago (Oct 2011), a 13" core i7. My download speeds are a tiny fraction of what I get with a 10 year old Dell. Reading the posts on this issue, they all seem to be going in circles. I am technically very savvy although new to apple. I did at one point get an acceptable increase in download speeds after manually entering the gateway, subnet and DNS. However two days later download speeds have reduced from 17.8 MB/s to 37kb/s. The right now the Dell is screaming a 702MB download. The MBP slug is telling me it will take 5 hours.
Has anyone ever resolved his issue?

Slooowww download speeds with new MacBook Air.

I recently replaced my old MacBook from 2007 with a new MacBook Air. Since I've gotten it I've had a series of frustruations. I hadn't even thought to check if it had an ethernet port or a cd drive. Because it has nither I've had to download versions of things I'd generally install via CD. My download speeds seem to be incredibly slow on this new MacBook Air, it took hours to download firefox. I feel like my older MacBook was much faster, I don't understand. I recently did a speed test (I have Comcast) for the MacBook Air and it came up with a 1mbps download speed. Is this an issue with the computer or with my modem (docis 3.0, cable) or router (standard belkin) or with Comcast? I'm pretty frustrutaed.
Other questions:
I'd love to plug this directly into our cable modem, but I see that I need an adapter.
I'd also love to connect this to my iMac via thunderbolt cable and use use target disc mode to install some stuff.
I'd like to buy a plain thunderbolt cable to have for use with more modern computers, and adapters for use with this older/other stuff. Is there an adapter that lets me attach the thunderbolt cable to an ethernet wire so I can plug directly into the modem? Also, my imac has a firewire 800 port, not a thunderbolt port, so is there a thunderbolt to firewire 800 cable?
What would be the cheapest way of getting these cables and adapters, (links would be very appreciated!)?

I REALLY need help W/ my New Ip 4. Music Note Link, takes me right to the store, and keeps telling me, all my music has been downloaded, but I can't find it anywhere.... HELP!!!

I upgraded my Original Iphone to an Iphone 4, and am having issues syncing my Music,
It asked me, if I wanted to set up my phone as a NEW Iphone, or use the last sync. I figured, using the last sync would simply move everything over. NOT, so much. I am using Windows, Not Mac.
I uploaded the LATEST version of Itunes. And on occasion if I click the Music link button, and tap a bunch of things,.. It will take me to a page that says,.. Iphone or Shared Library. The only way I can get my music to show up, is via, tapping Shared Owner's Library. But it takes a zillion taps to get there, and 50% of the time doesn't show up at all. It says- repeatedly, Either, "You have no songs," etc. or when I tap, "Not on this device" it says, "all of your music has been downloaded to this device..." But HOW do I get to it?
On my OLD phone, all I had to do was tap the Music Note,... and my library showed up... That's all I want...
I put my music in the cloud, etc,.. I just thought that was a COPY. Am I needing some kind of CLOUD app on my phone? Or Can someone walk me thru this... I'd be eternally grateful. I'm ready to throw this thing out the window! HELLLPPP! PLEASE!!!

The reason, I included the annotation that I'd upgraded my Itunes, (On my Computer) is B/C in many forums - the very first question, *HELPERS* ask, is. "Do you have the latest version of Itunes downloaded on your computer." I wanted to knock out any obvious replies.
Now- "DO YOU have any idea,"... how your UNHELPFUL remarks, do absolutely nothing but hurt others that might not have the EXPERIENCE you have? How do you expect people to know things without asking questions? Whew! RUDE!!
