New W520 on order

Hey all,
Newcomer to Lenovo here. Considering I'm waiting on a W520 (i7-2760QM, 4GB, 2000M, 500GB 7200RPM) and have indeed read back quite a bit on these forums, some of you are surely questioning "what's wrong with this guy?"
Simply put, Dell Precisions, HP EliteBooks, and the W520 are the only machines with the horsepower and features I seek with proper support standing behind them. I've heard questionable things about the longevity and build quality of EliteBooks, and have had a disastrous experience with Dell ProSupport/REC/two TAMs/Executive team, so Dell's off the table out of principle. That leaves our friend the W520.
An affiliate with a unit of the same spec has reported that he did originally experience the random shut-off issue and it was resolved by a motherboard swap, so that is pretty much the only reason I don't consider the design flawed beyond reasonable hope. Of course, nobody is posting to say theirs works 100%; generally only the people with issues tend to report status.
I don't have the machine yet; my order went in on the 2/10. My dock was marked as shipped this morning but the computer was one of those '4 weeks' things due to the 500GB 7200RPM HDD...we shall see what happens with it.
Anyway...that's my computer, and I'll definitely be reporting on things both positive and negative as I encounter them. Fingers crossed for a positive experience, but I know (or am told, anyway ) that Lenovo will be right there by me helping if I do happen to get one of the duds that seem to be out there.

I'm certainly looking forward to it. While I rarely buy anything 'current' when it comes to technology, it was time for a step forward (my outgoing computer is a Dell Inspiron 630m, and while electronically it is still completely sound, it's not a performer), and I specifically wanted to avoid a 'new design' which the rumoured W530 would be. The W520's issues, for units that are affected, are known so I know what to look for (nevermind the new Dell I just was forced into RMA'ing by a company that had no interest in addressing my technical concerns).
Logical reasoning suggests there are W520s, a huge number of them, that have absolutely no issues. It simply isn't possible that every W520 is faulty, otherwise they wouldn't allow people to buy them and become further burdens on the support infrastructure.
Anyone know where to get detailed order status? All I see is 'released to manufacturing' in my last email, and 'in process' on the order status page.

New Infinity 2 Order

Hi Guys,
Ive recently placed a new Infinity 2 order, porting from a TalkTalk ADSL service.
When I placed the order I did not have my TalkTalk MAC code, however I received this on Sunday via email.
When I go into the ordertracking page to input the MAC code, the web page does not recodnise the code (I never get past Step 1 of whats indicated to be a 2 step process)
I called the 0800 number indicated on the BT welcome email, and gave the MAC code verbally to somone who spoke English as a second language. He appeared to struggle with the MAC code input as well, and after several attempts announced there seemed to be a systems problem, but it had finally gone through.
My issue is that when I look at the ordertracker today (48 hours after verbally being told the MAC code has been accepted) the order update still says that the MAC code is outstanding and no dates have been confirmed for installation.
Is this a problem, or does the ordertracker status always lag behind the status on any internal BT system?

So the plot thickens....
Ive talked to a UK BT agent who checked the order progress, and they confirmed that the MAC code is still outstanding.
I gave them the TalkTalk MAC code I was issued with, only to be told that its in the wrong format!
The issued MAC has the following format: XXXX1234567/XX12X.
However the BT portal is requesting the MAC in the following format: XXXX12345678/XX12X. So my TalkTalk MAC code is one digit short. BT asked me to go back to Talk Talk and request they check the MAC code issued is correct, which they have.
They also said the MAC code digits can be between 7-9 digits long.
I was also then told by Talk Talk that the MAC code for my current service is actually provided by BT themselves (I assume via Openreach?) as Im on a BT provided LLU service. In addition, I cant request for another MAC code until a full 30 days has elapsed from when the current one was issued.
My Infinity 2 order is currently still unconfirmed, awaiting MAC code.
Are there any BT moderators who can assist? I seem to be caught in a Catch 22 loop between BT and Talk Talk, with BT themself not recodnising the MAC code that they apparently issued to Talk Talk!

How to open an existing Pages document?
Click Pages icon in the Dock to launch Pages.
When Pages is open, click File menu in the Pages menu bar.
Select “Open”.
When the select document dialog box opens up, highlight/select the document and click “Open”

Perhaps the memory clock limit was to address a possible cause of the SSS issue. I've been running 1.37 with Crucial 4x8 gb SODIMMs w/o any issue. They are capable of running at 761MHz but are being clocked at 664.6 Mhz. Not a big deal for me.

I want to add a new field in order.jsp. How to store that data into backend?

If you are adding a header field then you will extend the header structure in CRM and do the same with Item structures for Item fields. You will use EEWB or similar technique in the CRM backend to extend the header or item.
These extended fields in the backed are available in customer_h or _i structures in the order object that can be read and modified in the Header BAdI or Item BAdi.
If you think that this message is cryptic or not enough, then you should search for Extension Guide in this forum and read the document.

My iMac G5 iSight has died. New iMac on order.

My 5+ year old 20" iMac G5 iSight has died after a recent 3 hour power outage. I have nothing. It has acted a little stubborn with some restarts recently and I waited a little too long to replace. I tore it down and replaced the PRAM battery but no luck, I am thinking it is a power supply issue. I have a new iMac on order which should arrive next week. I also should have a good Time Capsule backup.
I would like to remove the hard drive and put it an external firewire enclosure, reboot from that and restore my data and applications. Will be going from a PPC iMac to an Intel. Is this a valid option? My main concern is my Quicken data and program. I have been running Quicken 2006 and don't really want to upgrade from the reviews I have read. Don't have the install disk for Quicken 2006 anymore.

Removing the drive is an excellent idea, you should be able to mount your firewire external and use it on your new machine.
I'm not sure if you will be able to reboot from the FireWire external, it depends on the damage done by the hard shutdown (get yourself a USP, I use APC models, they're very good and have saved me many a time, I live in the country and the power is always going off), but it's likely that you can.

When i am trying to add a new function to order Template under /contolData/Functions/ form data dictonary

Hi Harman,
You might need to be more specific before I can help you. What have you done, and which step you run into the error? I supopse you have created a new "function" Order Component, and created the required Control Data nodes in Data Dictionary (what have you added?), right? So, when you go into the Order Template tab of the new Order Component (which would be empty since it was newly created), and you try to "select from Dictionary" the corresponding ControlData for the function (e.g. /ControlData/Functions/MyNewFunction), that such an error occurs?
Have you assigned a process for this Order Component? Studio does not allow adding control data to it unless a process is assigned.
Btw, you should define a namespace for your Order Components (and other orchestration entities). The OSM server uses namespace to locate these entities among cartridges.

Please check at the time of Service order creation the document type of purchase order is for services. If no please first change document type in ME21N select document type for service po then enter reference of document number in field of purchase order and it's line item at item detail level.
So please compare your process of purchase order creation with below detail.
Enter ME21N -Select document type for po.
Then enter purchase order number in field of reference purchase order field. then check your data.

SimpleTap on new W520

Hi,
I just took delivery on a new W520. It came with SimpleTap preinstalled. I can start it by double tapping the touchpad. I can not get it to work by touching the tiles via the latop screen. Is there something wrong or is this how it is suppose to work with this model of laptop?

Hi, I want to create new (from copy of existing type) type of order.
I will create new order in ME21 with new type which I create.
There is some stuff in forum - f.e. information that I can do it in SPRO:
"PM/CS>Maintenance and service processing>Maintenance and service order ...", but I dont have it.

But these orders can be executed from transaction IW31.

I am new to the forum and new to lenovo.
Just started setting up my brand new w520 and the Fn+Home/End keys dont work to control display brightness.
Any w520 owners having this problem as well?

Appreciate if you could try running TVSU and Windows Update to ensure all the drivers are installed.
Also is X-Rite a default software which comes with the W520? (I am unable to confirm this as I do not have a W520 to test on) ...
If X-Rite is the one acting up and causing the screen brightness adjustment to not work, I would need to escalate this to engineering.

New W520 & Open Ports

I just bought a new W520. I was testing the Norton Firewall and running port scans against the machine. I noticed some open ports so I did a recovery to factory condition. I ran the port scan again and see a number of ports (25, 80, 110, 8080 - if memory serves correct). I telnet to the ports and they respond but the is no visiable text so it is difficult to figure out what is running. I've tried using Tcpview and other tools to view the open ports via Windows 7, but I don't see those ports listening. I am wondering if there are some Lenovo tools/utilities that use these ports? I may just be paranoid

I decided to break out the big guns. I ran a Nessus scan and NMAP againts my W520. The same ports weren't open when compared to the scan by Advanced Port Scan by RAdmin. These are the results of nmap which mirror the open ports Nessus found. Keep in mind, I had the firewall turned off since I am testing Bitdefender's Internet Security 2012. I used TCPViiew to link the process to these ports and found:

Docking Display With New W520

I just got a new W520, and I am unable to see the boot-up screen when it is docked. There is a bitlocker login that I must deal with before Windows will load. Once windows loads, both monitors function normally. I've tried both monitors hooked through Digital, one digital and one analog, and switched which ones were analog and digital. None of these steps have worked.

cliffnic, welcome to the forum,
when the system isn't docked please start it, from a cold start, and immediately press F1 to enter BIOS. When in BIOS if you select the Config menu and then Display you should be able to select the "default boot display". Please set it to the output you wish to display the boot screen on, save your setting and exit BIOS.
After it's booted to windows shutdown and cold start with the system docked. Let us know what happens.
When the system isn't docked it will automatically default to the internal screen.
