New W530 setup questions...

Just received my W530 in the mail and I've been trying to get up to speed on all the new technology out there and how to properly setup my computer... I've tried various searches but haven't got a clear answer I don't think - here goes:
W530 8gb RAM (2x4), K2000, 500 gb HDD with raid option, x64 win 7, hi res screen
I already bought a Samsung EVO SSD 250GB for the main drive which I will pickup from my US mailbox on Monday.
The reason I bought the computer is because my 4 year old Acer just couldn't handle the intensity of PlanSwift and On-Centre digital estimating programs for construction. In addition I dabble with Chief Architect Premiere for 3D house design and the Adobe Suite to do graphics stuff for the company, etc., etc. I will likely take some CAD related courses at school as well in the future.
My plan was to install OS and programs on the new SSD in the main bay and keep current project files on there. All misc pictures, videos and company files and other things on the HDD which would be in the UltraBay. I currently use about 180 GB and have another 250GB stored on an old laptop which I'd like to transfer over so everything is on one laptop. That one will be for internet searches in the garage for dirtbike repairs
Questions:
1. Is it worth getting a 128 GB mSata drive for the OS (under $100 for Crucial)? Then have all program files on SSD in main bay and misc files on HDD in ultrabay? do I need an adapter for the ultrabay or is it already able to accept the HDD in the ultrabay? I haven't popped out the ultrabay yet to see...
2. I hear of using the mSata drive for Caching? Is 128 GB enough for OS and caching? When is the caching helpful? Should I use the mSata just for caching?
3. Do I setup the computer with the OS on the HDD in the main bay and then clone/image it to the mSata drive oro SSD drive? Or do I start with the SSD in the main bay? I'm really confused on this part...
4. If necessary I will upgrade the RAM later - I think this is a straightforward upgrade as long as the voltages with the original RAM are the same - is this correct?
5. I currently use a Sony KDL 40XBR8 TV as a second monitor at work - what connection should I be using to get the best display settings? I currently use an HDMI with my Acer for no particular reason. I also have an Acer 23" at home which will be replaced with another Sony or Samsung TV when we move into our new house...
sorry for the noob questions... I am typically really good at finding answers to my questions but i really didn't find any clear answers or they were so technical I didn't realize it was the answer to my question ;-)
Can someone give me a practical approach to setting up my computer so I can start off right... thanks!!
Daniel
Thanks in advance
Daniel
ps can't wait to light this thing up with the SSD! It should rip pretty good...

Hi Daniel.  When I bought my w530 I immediately installed a 256gb SSD. And now, over a year later I'm looking at getting a 256gb mSata for the boot drive.
1. The mSata port may only be Sata II but I figure it's not likely that I'll notice the difference.  High transfer rates are really only realized with large files and the OS is usually a large collection of very small files.  But that's just an opinion and your experience may vary.
For an ultrabay adapter, check out newmodeus.  Quite a few forum posts mention success with this adapter versus the cheap ones from eBay.  I haven't bought one yet myself, but this is what I will get when the time comes.  (they also sell an adapter  to convert your optical drive into an external USB optical drive.)
http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_7&products_id=400
Also, search the forum and be aware that there are many who report problems of the w530 kicking out the ultrabay drive, but it seems better with the newmodeus adapter (as I recall; it was quite a while back when I read about it).  I haven't looked at what ncix carries for adapters but would be interested to know if you find something that works.
And the drives shipped with the w530 come in different heights, and if it doesn't match the height of your SSD you will need rubber rails.  I still haven't ordered mine and I'm letting my drive sit in the overheight internal bay without proper support.   I just carry it very carefully.  I'm not sure of the best place to get rails, direct from Lenovo or elsewhere.  Last time I checked with Newmodeus they didn't sell just rails, but that may have changed (it was quite a while ago that I checked).
2. Caching only helps if your OS boot partition is on a traditional harddrive.  With an SSD you won't utilize the caching as it won't be any faster (and may be slower).
3. I would try installing direct to the mSata/SSD instead of cloning.  For a new system it's probably just as easy and less prone to issues.  Windows will take care of alignment, etc., and turning off features unnecessary for SSD (superfetch/prefetch/and all that).
I also don't believe it necessary to install Win7 fresh.  It depends on your view.  I didn't want the hassle of tracking down a legit copy of Win7 install that I would trust, not to mention the hassle of installing it.  Instead, I made the restore DVD(s) using the Lenovo tools whlie the original harddrive was installed, then switched the drive with the new SDD and restored from the DVDs.  Then I went through and uninstalled any Lenovo software I didn't think was useful.  It's been working nicely ever since and I don't regret not starting with a fresh install.  Your experience may vary, though.
4. Upgrading ram is very easy.  I'm not sure about specs, but if you don't match voltage and speed the system will downgrade both to the lowest common available.  You should be able to find many discussions about matching RAM voltage on the 'net.  You also would have to wait until your system arrives anyways because you don't know the specs of the RAM in advance (since Lenovo uses different suppliers).
I'm not sure how much RAM you'd need for CAD software.  I upgraded mine to 32gb because I didn't want to find myself wishing I had more (for software development).  I think I only ever hit as high as 20gb used, and am usually around the 6-12gb mark (depends on how many VMs I have going).
5. Sorry, I can't answer your video question.  I use the docking station with two monitors via DVI.  I haven't tried HDMI.
Before you sell off the extra parts, make sure you don't need them for warranty coverage.  Warranty will only cover the system with original parts, so if you have to send in your system you would remove all custom parts and reinstall the originals.  I'm not sure about onsite service, if you have to revert your system or not to original specs.
All comments I made above were in respect of Win7 Pro.  I have no idea if anything changes under Win8/8.1.
Good luck!  I hope you enjoy your w530 as much as I do mine.

  • New Studio Setup-Questions

We are getting closer to setting up the new edit suite.
Here is a list of equipment we are getting or will be?
I got a great deal on a new Kona card that was PCI-x--that should explain the need for the older powermac.
Items with ???? not sure what to get
    What else am I missing?
    Equipment List
    PowerMac G5 dual 2.5 Ghz PCI-x
    Kona Lh PCI-x card
2 LCD computer monitors (apple 23 in.)
    Monitor speakers/amplifer ?????
    Mackie 1402 VLX mixer
    Audio Patch Bay
    Winstead Rack Unit
Plasma or LCD video monitor ?????
Sony PVM studio monitor (for color accurate monitoring)
    RS-422 control Switch-5 port
Video Router A/V switch (for multiple decks need S-VHS, compontant, composite--all going to kona card---not sure about this) ?????
    Media Storage eSata 5 Bay enclosure (caldigit/Lacie V2S) 3Tb?????

We are a small business boutique that spealizes in outdoor television, primarily fishing in the Northeast.
We will be creating a pilot in the next few months for another outdoor show, which we are planning to do in HD.
My business also does everything from DVD home movie transfers to commercial and corporate.
so we kind of of do it all.
In the past we've done it all with express pros, which my editors could take home with them or work on a laptop.
We had one online media composer to finish.
I'm tearing apart the avid system now and moving to a larger facility.
There I'd like to set up a final cut hd system...
As for cameras, we are still researching but they need to be disposable.
meaning if they go overboard, it's not 25k to replace--only 5-8k depending on camera.
I plan on setting up a blog for this as well so others can follow in my footsteps and see how i went about making the big switch.
Most of the work for the next year will be HD broadcast, while i plan to rent the decks for mastering, i plan to shoot HDV and ingest DVCPRO HD with the kona card.
As for storage, I'm not sure...there are so many options out there.
I've read through all of Shane's blogs which talk a lot about storage.
Caldigit is getting great press but it looks like a Raid system could be put together a bit cheaper.
I've made my money in this business without having to spend a lot on gear...and as a small business owner that's the idea.
So if i can save a few bucks, that would be good too.
I plan on using a dual 2.7 Ghx G5 with about 5 gig of Ram.
I would also like to run the other studio apps on this box...including the new studio apps, such as color.
when i bought this company, all this equipment was setup.
So this is my first time setting up a system of this size.
I've put together some great DV systems but that's nothing compared to the amount of money you could spend putting one of these HD systems together.
I started looking into feeder decks depending on what camera we shoot with...Sony has a nice unit for about $7500...it seems to have all the pro outputs including hd-sdi.
As for the video router...could you suggest where i might start to look for an item like that? Is anyone using something similar?

  • New W530 CPU question

    Happy holidays all...
I ordered a W530 to replace my W510 and I have a question regarding the config. The machine I ordered is as follows:
    Processor
    Intel Core i7-3920XM
    Operating system
    Windows 7 Professional 64
    Total memory
    8 GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (2 DIMM)
    Hard drive
    500GB HDD 7200rpm
    Video
    NVIDIA Quadro K2000M 2GB
I was tossed between ordering the i7-3920 and the i7-3820QM and would like to know if there is a meaningfull difference in performance between both CPU's as it relates to running multiple virtual machines and heavy CPU dependant games like Microsoft FSX.
I'd also like to know if the W530 is better at managing cooling than the W510, especialy under heavy workloads.

    Not sure about the W530.
The W520 uses a different (and more noisy!) fan for the XM processor - since the XM draws 10W more power.

  • New user setup question

I just purchased a used iphone, I know that I need a new sim card to activate, my question is how do I know if the previous owner has left any of her info on it, what is the best way to set it up starting out with new sim card? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I would also do a restore on it before you activate it.

  • New Awesome setup, a few questions.

    Hello everyone.
Been tinkering away all day on a new lightweight setup using the Awesome WM. I like it a lot, but I have a few simple questions. I've tried searching the forums and the wiki to no avail. Hopefully it isn't because I wasn't looking hard enough!
1.) Background: I've got the background set using nitrogen, I like the tool! But it doesn't stay set on reboot. I'm sure this one is easy, but I can't figure it out. Also, I have to run the tool from a terminal in the directory with the wallpapers. Is there a way to set the default directory it looks for wallpapers at? Does it have one already that I just don't know?
2.) Firefox: It runs well, but there are some UGLIES to sort out. I'm sure GTK2 theme is one of them. The text in the browser looks fine, but the top bar with the tabs and menus has a really ugly font. Any suggested gtk2 themes for the awesome wm? Any good apps for changing them or any good packages with a lot to choose from?
3.) Launcher: is there a way to put "quick launch" style icons on the awesome menu bar?
Sorry if these questions are bone head, I've been slamming my head all day agains the configuration of vim and urxvt and I just don't want to give up. Those things are beasts. I actually ended up ditching urxvt for the xfce terminal and i'm really happy with it.
Any good suggestions for VIM themes?
Just looking to take a break and process some of this stuff before diving back into the config files really. Sorry the questions are a bit scattered, maybe I should have posted this in the newbie corner...feel free to move it!
    Thanks!!

Cool, got the nitrogen thing worked out just fine.
I'm having troubles making vim look right in the terminal. The default color scheme seems to appear correctly...but when I do desert it doesn't look like it does in gvim. I'd prefer to use vim in the console, anyone using the xfce terminal and have vim looking right? any .Xdefaults I could take a look at to get it going right?
    I appreciate the feed back!

  • What is my DNS for my new website setup?

What is my DNS for my new website setup?
I am registering my new Domain name with an outside website service (not iWeb). Namecheap.com
What Mac OS X 10.8.2 DNS do I use for my server setup with thru their business? They have asked me this question. Or do I use their default servers as they suggest?
Please help. Thank you in advance for your advice.

It's not entirely clear what you're asking. Are you asking what data you have to provide to your domain registrar? Or are you asking for some configuration data for your machine?
Are you planning/hoping to use your Mac OS X Server as the authoritative DNS server for your domain? (this is usually a bad idea unless you really know what you're doing).
If you're setting up the remote domain on your registrar's servers then there's nothing you need to do for your machine. For simplicity's sake you don't need to do any DNS for your domain on your own server - let the service provider do that. If you want to setup your domain internally as well, then I'd recommend disconnecting your public records (hosted by your service provider) from your private ones (running on your own machine) since you will likely want to hide your internal network addresses from the public.

  • New W530 - what software to keep / install?

So, I've got a brand new W530 on order!    I've got an M4 SSD that I'll be putting in when it gets here.  So, my question is this...  I don't want any of the Norton, or 3rd party apps.  I'm currently planning to start from scratch and install a fresh Win7.  I'll backup the entire recovery drive to a thumb drive and use the drivers from that.  then Install all the good apps from Lenovos support site.  Question being, what should that list be?  Are there things that I should definately get, or avoid?  Or am I better off just restoring the whole thing, then uninstalling the stuff I don't want?
thanks in advance for any responses.

I would actually keep the factory install and uninstall the things you don't need from there.
Others have claimed that the factory image actually improves battery life by as much as 2 hrs and keeps CPU utilization down. In most cases I wouldn't believe them but after seeing my W530, I'm inclined to believe there's a lot of custom interaction between the hardware and the Lenovo applications that would be tough to replicate without the factory image.
Also be warned, you can't run the recovery media creator more than once so don't make your choice between a USB drive backup or a DVD backup lightly. (you'll want a 16GB USB drive or more)

  • How to do initialization for new system setup?

    Hi, Experts:
I need your help! Can you tell me your suggestion please?
This is a new system setup. We are about to test on the Initialization/Delta process.
The data source is 2LIS_13_VDITM 7.0 version. The test is on the PSA.
I have done an EARLY Initialization. On R3 system, if a billing record is canceled, we are able to capture it in the RSA7. Then, we did a delta load which were successfully tranferred to BW system.
However, if I created a new order and push it to Billing, I am NOT able to find it on RSA7 of the Delta queue.
That would mean, the delta queue could not capture any new billing records.
Then, besides the early init, we tried to do an Initialization without Data Transfer in the hope that this could resolve the new records issue, it doesn't allow to do it, saying "no 2 initialization".
What is the right way to do initialization??
    Thanks guys!!

    Hello Sylvia,
Changing it to new delta mode need not clean out everything in BW.
its a change in R/3 side on how delta records will be pushed.
Delta queue will remain the same in R/3.
But since you have already missed some records and you are not sure which one.
Also the existing records in the delta queue are not the correct one as these are not bringing new records according to you.
So I will suggest you after you have done the changes to queued delta....do a fresh start.
Delete the data from the DSO.
1)delete the existing and do a new init without data transfer so that a new delta queue is created.
2)Fill the set up tables first and start the full repair loads to DSO.
3)once all the history is loaded then you can schedule the delta.
    Thanks

  • How can I get a Mac to redo the new machine setup?

    Hey gang-
Is there a way to get a Mac to redo the new machine setup dialogs the way a Mac does the first time it is started out of the box? I'm selling my iBook and it would be nice for the new owner to be presented with that. I know I could do it by erasing and reinstalling the original CDs, but I'd like to include the various incremental Software Updates that I've done to save the new user the trouble.
Is there a way to get a Mac to do this?
    Thanks!
    Dave

John's method may work for the most part, but there are some things to be aware of that might cause problems for you or the new owner.
First, it doesn't get rid of everything you have installed or caused to be created in /Library or any of the caches except those in the /User folder. Some of the /Library items are probably things you want to pass on to the new owner, such as plug-ins that support apps. Some aren't, such as many of the /Library/Preferences items set by an admin user. Some may even contain sensitive data.
Second, you will be passing on a lot of clutter of dubious value to the new user, like logs, & any corruption of files that an Erase & Install would get rid of.
Third, Setup Assistant may or may not be designed to work & play well with updated apps & system components. This is unchartered territory. It may "undo" some of the things you want the new owner to have, or not.
Forth, if you have set up, for example, the Apache web server or any other UNIX-based service that required root or sudo access, these files will not necessarily be in their default state.
Fifth, there may be support items in /Users/Shared for both Apple & third party apps. John's step 4 will erase them.
Sixth, you need to consider OS 9 folders if you have used Classic, particularly if you have migrated anything from an older Mac. You may have user items, preferences, etc. that need to be purged.
Seventh, I probably have forgotten other things that more knowledgeable folk can fill you in on.
So, while it is possible to do what you want, it isn't really as easy as it seems. A better approach, & one that will serve both you & the new owner better in the long run, is to completely wipe the drive with a secure erase. Consider making a "bonus" CD or DVD for the new owner with all the latest updates, as a companion to the original installer set.
Something else to consider: If the Mac that you are putting up for sale did not come with Tiger, you can't include it legally in your sale unless you include the retail DVD & license you used to install it. The same is true of any apps that you might have added to the used Mac, including shareware you payed for. Aside from the ethical implications, you do not want to run into problems because of "shared" registration codes should you need them for support or upgrades.

  • Help!! New W530 and I have a recovery disc creation error?

Hi, I just got a brand new W530 and got an error when creating the recovery discs.  Now the process won't restart.   Is there a solution?
The partition is still there but the wizard won't start up again so I can't give it another shot.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello and welcome,
There may be a way to re-enable the recovery creation process.  There was with older machines.  I don't know what the current situation is, but others may chime in.
The best course might be to call support and request the recovery media.  I can't speak for Lenovo, but it's common for them to be sent free in this situation.

  • Crystal 2008 - New Page Setup options - need explanation please

I have been unable to locate documentation on the new Page Setup screen for Crystal 2008.  I am specifically looking on detailed documentation about the following check boxes:
    Printer Options:
         No Printer
    Page Options section:
Dissociate Formatting Page Size and Printer Paper Size
    Margins section:
         Adjust Automatically.
Can someone please detail for me these options.  I'd like to know why I would use them and how do they work when combinations of them are selected.  I am most interested in the second option (above), but would like explanations about all of them.
    Thank you.

I do not think the No Printer option is valid for us as our reports are not web based.
Does the Adjust Automatically apply to the reports as they are run from a runtime client?  or does this just adjust for design mode?
This is why I am asking about the 'Dissociate Formatting Page Size and Printer Paper Size'.  It sounds like this is the setting we may want to check when creating our reports before we distribute to runtime clients.
Here is why I want to know.
We develop our reports to fit 8.5 inch x 11 inch paper.  We distribute our reports to our clients along with the runtime merge modules.  We have a VB.Net 2005 program that our non-vb.net software application executes in order to print the reports (using the Crystal for .NET methods, etc.) from our software application.
Some of our clients are in Europe.  They use A4 paper.  We have re-designed some of our reports so the fields will fit within both paper sizes (8.5x11 and A4).  However, we have over 500 reports we distribute, so we have not modified all reports.  Therefore, prior to Crystal XI, we recommended to our runtime users that if the data on the report did not fit on the A4 paper (it was truncated), then they need to go into the printer properties (from the printer dialog box...these are users running the report, not developers) and change the report from portrait to landscape before they print.  This would print the report landscape with data across 8.5", and then white space on the right/remainder of the page, but all the data would print, nothing truncated.  After we installed Crystal XI, using this option of selecting landscape at print time, no longer worked.  The report would print with the orientation in which it was created (in our case portrait) regardless of what the user selected from printer properties.
This is why I am asking about the 'Dissociate Formatting Page Size and Printer Paper Size'.  Can someone at SAP elaborate on this please?

  • LoginModule with JAAS, setup question for Frank Nimphius

    Hi Frank,
i am trying to use a custom LoginModule in conjuction with the setup procedure in your "J2EE Security in Oracle ADF Web Applications" white paper. Have you done this before? can you provide roadmap for additional/alternate setup steps needed to use a LoginModule?
this is my original post from early this week:
    JAAS Setup question
    thanks,
    brenden

    Brenden,
please refer to the OC4J security documentation which si a part of the Oracle Application Server documentation that can be looked up online here on OTN. Custom LoginModule configurations require OC4J 9.0.4. In addition, this feature also only works with the jazn-data.xml provider and not with OID.
From the perspective of this whitepaper, the LoginModule will be used by the OC4J container to authenticate users and thus should not require any change in teh paper.
I haven't yet had the time created an example and document that showcases how to do this. Hopefully christmas will give me some rest to look into this.

  • Presenter 8 -- need help with proper settings to allow quiz retake (with a NEW set of questions from a random pool)

We are publishing a Presenter 8 quiz to an LMS in a SCORM format.  I am having trouble with the following:  the quiz is built with multiple question groups, and a limited number of questions are being selected from each group.  E.g. we have 80+ questions in total, and 25 are presented to a user on a given attempt.
When a user fails the quiz and exits the quiz normally, we want them to study and try again.  I set the quiz settings to allow infinite attempts, and set the LMS settings to make sure the quiz is not presented in "review mode".  When I test this quiz by failing it the first time, when I reenter the quiz, I am taken to the last slide in the quiz (which is the last one I viewed), and I can retake the quiz by navigating back to the first question.
Here's the problem:  I am presented with the SAME set of questions, rather than a NEW set of random questions.  This will facilitate cheating (all a user has to do is take the quiz once, review the answers, and then take it again to pass it).
How do I insure that the user is presented with a NEW set of questions when I retake the quiz?
I am open to upgrading to Adobe Presenter 10, but would rather not have to do so.  There must be some setting I'm missing.
