New WD Passport Studio Causing Problems

Just got a new passport studio because of the firewire 800 and for the most part it's working great. It does seem to be a little quirky though. I plugged it in earlier and it didn't show. Then I tried again, and it showed up, but finder locked up, and then all of the desktop icons disappeared. The only way to get them back is to do a restart. I'm trying to figure out if something is wrong with the computer or with this passport studio. any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

So this isn't much help, but this is what I got from WD this morning:
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support.
We truly apologize for the inconvenience you are having and we will be more than glad to assist you.
Are you hooking up your external hard drive to a FireWire hub? It is always recommend that you plug your external hard drive directly into your computer. Are you using the power adapter we supplied with your drive?
Do you plug your external hard drive's A/C adapter into a power strip or directly into a wall socket? If you are using a power strip or battery backup then we recommend that you connect your hard drive directly into a wall socket. In the past, we have seen several customers who have had issues using power strips and battery backup devices.
In order for us to help you further, we need to have more information.
- Have you installed the latest OS updates as well as updated the FireWire controller drivers on your computer?
- Have you tried connecting your external hard drive's FireWire cable into a different FireWire port on your computer?
- When connected to a different port, do you have the same problem? Have you tried a different FireWire cable?
- Are you experiencing any other problems with FireWire devices on your computer?
- Does your external hard drive have the same problems if you try it on a different computer?
The answers below may have resolve some or all of your questions.

  • I have over 3,000 photos/videos from 4S iphone and need to get them to my new, "my passport studio(1Tb)" but no iphoto on passport... not that much space on mac book too... is there an easier way

I take lots of photos/videos of my kids and my iphone is hooked up to my macbook-pro and then new-my passport (1Tb) and having problems on transfering them to external hard drive (my passport). "My passport" does not have iphoto so I can't use it as a start up hard drive to my computer... I can't download on computer because it says it is full...
    any suggestions,
    thxs,

Move the Library to the Passport?
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Need new iTunes, but it causes problems

iTunes 6.0.2 had been causing an error on my computer "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience...".
I solved that problem by removing the iPod and iTunes software that I had downloaded from this site and replacing everything with the software that came with my iPod.
But now when I try to open a song I bought here it says I need to authorize my computer, even though it's the same computer.
And to authorize it, I have to download iTunes 6.0.2
The version that has been screwing up.
    Does anyone have any advice?

I have an iPod Shuffle, Windows XP Pro, IBM ThinkPad
Does anyone have a link to iTunes 6.0.1.3?
    Or an earlier iTunes 6.0?

  • Media on new external hard drive causing problems with FCP 4.1

    Hi gang
I bought a new 160 gig external hard drive due to my internal media drives becoming fairly full of media (20 gigs left on each). The external is being used only for media. I removed ownership permissions on all the media drives but now when I boot up the computer, the external won't show on the desktop (am using the encryption keys that came with the drive). If this is the case I can open any FCP project. If I can get the external drive up on the desktop (usually by switching the firewire port from back to front), then none of my FCP projects will open up (have to force quit due to "not responding"). This is drivng me nuts!!
    Any ideas ??
    thanks . . . .

Thanks for the replies. I bought the drive from an Apple reseller, told him it was for media storage and he sold me the drive with a Macally hardware encrypted "enclosure". I guess I could (or should have) increased the size of my three internal drives but will return this sucker as the replies I have received all indicate the encryption "feature" is one I don't need. Taking it back and thanks for the advice . . . as always this forum is extremely helpful !!

  • New Updated iphone software causing problems

Ever since the update last week of the iphone software, my "other" category is using 6.42 GB. Is anyone else having an issue with this?

I am having the same problem, with 6.26 GB attributed to Other. I am reluctant to Restore because I don't want to lose data that is not synched to my Mac.
I only sync with a G5 iMac. All my software is up-to-date, and I am concerned.
I cannot say it is due to my iPhone update. It just started today, well after the iPhone update.

  • I replaced my hard drive and used time machine to boot from but it installedthe unrepaired disk permissions of the faulty previous drive would this cause problems on my new drive?

I replaced my hard drive on macbook pro and used time machine to boot from but it also installed the unrepaired disk permmissions of the other drive, would this cause problems to my new drive?

Can you remember what the permissions problem was that you had before? You may need to reinstall OS X from scratch and not reinstall anything from your Time Machine backups. To be on the safe side you should reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, as well. Then only restore from your backup your document/data files.

  • My passport studio: problema espulsione

Salve a tutti.

Got the same problem – even after the upgrade to OSX 10.10.1. A restart usally helps. Even though the calls sometimes drop I got no crackling noise problem on iOS, though.

  • Big problem with my new blackberry passport

i have been using blackbeery passort for 10 yrs now
    i bought new blackberry passport
its been 29 days and today it wont start up
it keeps rebooting and wont start
    please help help help
also which number do i ring for warranty
    thank you

Try and use Link to reload the device software.   I'm not sure if you will lose your personal data or not, but my guess is you will.  No worries if you have a backup.
If you can't reload the OS with Link, use an autoloader.   (See stick at top of Passport forum.) You will lose your data on the device with this approach.

  • GEARAspiWDM.sys causes problems with PlexTools.

The unsigned driver GEARAspiWDM.sys (to be precise: upper filter) that you installed on my system cause problems with my DVD recorders (Px-716A and PX-760A). First thing I notice is a longer responce time (delay). The big problem is that there are faults while trying to erase or burn DVD media (I mostly use rewritable disks). I love iTunes, but just keep in mind why using upper filters and/or unsigned drivers is a very-very bad idea! The least you can do is to ask the user if he/she wants to install this driver.
I found my way to uninstall the driver manually. Later I found the uninstaller from Gear Software:
    http://www.gearsoftware.com/cfknowledgebase/articledisplay.cfm?articleid=295
Now iTunes will alert me that it cannot burn disk on every startup. You know what? I don't care about this future! So don't bother me every startup!

We know about the large file support issue (though this given version of it looks new to me) and work on it.
There is no intent to set __GNUC__ for us, nor we recommend users to define __GNUC__ with our compiler.
However we do have (another) solution for this issue and it will be available in one of the upcoming Sun Studio eXpress releases.
    regards,

  • New Infinity and BT Vision problem solved - thanks...

Not a problem or a complaint this time, but a pat on the back for BT.
I received my new BT Infinity service today, the engineers were on time, professional and quick.  After my Infinity service was active however I noticed I was getting a lot of V04 errors on BT Vision On Demand stuff.  I checked the line speed, and all seemed to be great, I am getting over 42meg!! So why the V04??  I called BT support and spoke to a lovely lady who seemed to know exactly what I was talking about, and she had the problem sussed out and fixed in about two minutes.
It turns out the problem was due to a QoS setting on my profile.  Over the last 18 months or so I had several times that my old ADSL broadband line speed would just dissappear to almost nothing, each time the BT support staff would push up the QoS in order to try and provide a good enough line speed for the BT vision to work.  This setting was never fixed when my new Infinity connection was setup and it was causing problems, hence the V04.  Problem appears to be fixed now, thanks for the quick resultion BT.

One thing on powerline adaptors (picked up from a comment by another poster on the forum at some point).
Powerline adaptors should never be used on power surge controlled extensions.
Where possible, they should not be used on extensions.
They should not be plugged into the one half of a twin socket with a surge controlled extension in the other half.
Most people know the first two, but maybe not the third ~ I didn't till I saw that other post.  It is quite natural to have all your computer equipment plugged into a surge controlled extension with the powerline plugged in conveniently next to it.  When I read the other post I changed mine around; because of the layout I had to break rule 2 to do it and temporarily use a long mains extension for the powerline, but it still very considerably imporoved the powerline performance.
That said, the performance I was seeing even with the problem wasn't bad enough to stop streaming working.
They say that because it can hinder the performance, as some surge protectors destroy signal but some are fine.

  • I have two Iphones with different email addresses sharing one Apple ID. Will that cause problems with using messaging and FaceTime?

I have two Iphones 5 with different email addresses sharing one Apple ID account. Both are using IOS 8.
I would like to set up a new Apple Id for one of the phones and remove it from the old account.
If I do that, can I move all of the purchased apps and songs to the new Apple account?
Also, will sharing one Apple ID account with two devices cause problems with using messaging and FaceTime?

Sharing an iCloud account between two devices can be done without causing issues with iMessage and FaceTime, just go into Settings for each of these functions and designate separate points of contact (i.e. phone number only, or phone number and unique email address).  While that works, you'll then face the problem where a phone call to one iPhone will ring both if on the same Wi-Fi network -- but again, that can be avoided by changing each phone's settings.
Rather than do all that, don't fight it -- use separate IDs for iCloud.  You can still use a common ID for iTunes purchases (the ID for purchases and iCloud do not have to be the same) or you can use Family Sharing to share purchases from a primary Apple account.

  • Can My New Hard Drive Be Causing BackUp Weirdness?

Last week, I bought a new Seagate 100GB/7200 rpm HD, which I've been using externally in a Firewire enclosure. I wanted to try it out for a week before I install it into my Pismo.
I've been using computers for 20 years, and I'm conscientious about saving often, and backing up everyday. Here's the weirdness: Today, Saturday Oct 6, I opened the two files I've been using every day, only to find I'd lost two day's work. I checked the Last Modified date, and sure enough, both files were marked Wednesday, Oct 3. So, I checked my internal HD to which I've also been saving my work. Same thing. Both files marked Wednesday. So I checked my memory stick. Same thing. Both files marked Wednesday. These are Word files. (I also usually have iTunes and Safari running in the background).
The most likely explanation for this is no doubt user error of an all too common kind but I am, as I say, extremely careful about backing up. So today, when I'd finished, I saved both files, and closed both files. I checked them in the HD's list, and they were both marked with today's date. Fine. So I clicked and dragged the first one over to the folder in the Internatl Drive. No problem. It alerted me that there was an older version and did I want to change it. I did. That went fine. But then, with the second file (also marked Today), when I dragged it to the Internal Drive's folder I fumbled it slightly, and I got a message saying "THere is a NEWER file with that name in this location." Huh? Sure enough, the file in my target folder was marked Today, and now the source file was marked Wednesday again!
The order I've been saving things is first to the new external HD, then to the internal HD, then to the memory stick (although I only used the stick on Friday).
First question. Is it possible there is something wrong with the new HD that would cause this? I don't want to install this puppy if that's the case. In fact, I'd want to return it.
Second question. If I've saved a file but haven't closed it, and then drag its icon from the HD to another target, will I be making a copy of the latest saved version? Or only the latest CLOSED version? (I don't think I did this yesterday, but it's possible, I guess).
Third question. Even if it is human error, what error could I possibly have made that would lose TWO days work and not just one?
Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

Disregard last post--I reread your message and see I got it wrong. The internal drive was set to Master. So, after reading your input, and checking Seagate's site (for the new drive) and Toshiba's (for the old), and OWC's Help Desk (for the Firewire enclosure) I've set the new drive to Master and put it into the machine. I've left the old drive on Master and put it into the enclosure to be used occasionally as an external backup. These seem to be the correct settings for both locations. I've now re-initialized the new drive and I'm up and running with it. I'm expecting this will have solved the problem. If not, I'll post back. Thanks so much for your help--others in the G3 Powerbook forum also found it very helpful. All best, GB.
