New WD Scorpio Black 750GB hard drive not recognized

Hey guys,
I've purchased a WD Scorpio Black 750GB hard drive for my newly acquired MacBook Pro 5.5, 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. The hard drive is installed (internal) but not being recognized by disk utility. Browsing on Google, I've found this to be a common occurring problem but as there were no direct solutions, I'm posting this in case anyone has any solutions to this issue.
I've reset the PRAM/ NVRAM with no avail.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Your response is not 100% clear to me.
Have you actually installed the WD and Seagate HDDs in the MBP or just connected them while in an external enclosure?
When you put the original HHD back in the MBP, it is recognized in Disk Utility but cannot be repaired?  Is that the case.
Have you tried to put in the original Installation disk and has the original HHD been recognized and/or one of the other HDDs in an enclosure been recognized?
Ciao.

hard drive not recognized during windows server 2008 setup

    Hi,
Whether the hard disk is recognized in BIOS?
Connect it to another computer to see if it could be recognzied incase the cause is the disk itself. Also please check if it is really a RAID instead of a single hard disk - a single disk should be recognized directly while RAID cannot be recognized until
    a suitable driver is installed.

  • My New Computer and My External Hard Drive Not Compatible

I just purchased a brand new Dell Inspiron with windows 8.  I had a Seagate back up hard drive on my old Dell.  I wanted to move some things (especially my pictures) to the new computer from the external hard drive, but when I tried to install, I get a message "Operating System Not Supported".  Now what?  I'm somewhat technologically challenged.
    Thank you.

You need to go into your BIOS settings and make sure that the external drive isn't set to boot.
An easier way around this is to unplug the drive from the computer until it has fully loaded.
If that doesn't work, post back.

  • Advanced Format Hard Drive not recognized by HP DV6000 Controller

    Hello,
I have an HP DV 6000 laptop (6276 I think, I'm at work can't check) that came preinstalled with a Western Digital 160gb 1.5gb/s 5400 RPM drive (Vista) that failed a couple of weeks ago.  So i bought a Western Digital 750 GB WD Black SATA III 7200 RPM 16 MB drive to replace it. I read about people having some problems with Advanced Drive Format hard drives not being recognized by their controller, but also read that depending on the controller and specific Dv6000 model laptop they had-one wouldn't run into problems.
Well sure enough, when attempting to install Windows 7 I received the error that the hard drive was not detected. After researching online I came across an article on WD's site that noted
"Our SATA II hard drives use autospeed negotiation. This enables our SATA II drives to automatically detect the motherboard data transfer rate, making it backward compatible with SATA I data transfer rates. However, some older SATA I controllers are unable to support autospeed negotiation and cannot recognize the drive. This “drive not detected” condition occurs when a chipset is incapable of correctly negotiating the data transfer speed with a SATA II hard drive."
my drive is a SATA ||| but I'm pretty sure it's the same problem.  The site goes on to say a fix would be to  "purchase and install a third party PCI or PCI-Express Second Generation Serial ATA controller card for your Serial ATA hard drive(s)."
    My question(s) are.
1)Is the problem that I am trying to install a Sata ||| hard drive on a laptop with a controller that will only recognize SATA | hard drive?
    2) Or is the problem that the hard drive is an Advanced Drive Formatted hard drive and I need to buy a hard drive with out that specification?
    3) Or Should I buy a SATA controller card as WD suggests on their website and if so will this definitely allow my laptop's controller to recognize the new hard drive and proceed with the installation?
4)Or Should I just return the hard drive and buy a SATA | non Advanced Drive Format hard drive? (question 2 basically)
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi @jasmine00
Welcome to the HP Support Forums.
I certainly understand your issue with the drive upgrade. Unfortunately it is a bit of the nature of notebooks, the sacrifice of a large amount of upgradeability, in exchange for compactness and portability. Whenever a new technology comes out, older notebooks are never really going to be easy to upgrade, it at all. Normally the unit as a whole is tested with a set list of hardware, and only those items are supported.
That being said there is this document that could be helpful with your problem.

  • Thunderbolt Hard Drive Not Recognized

I've got a brand new Seagate Backup Plus 1tb hard drive and when I plug it in to the Thunderbolt input on my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Lion, it's not recognized in Finder. I looked in Disk Utility and it's not there. I looked in About this Mac and the Thunderbolt option under the Hardware section says that nothing is connected to the port. Could someone please help me out here? Does having a Thunderbolt port actually mean that it workds? I'm being a bit naive here. Thanks for your kind help.

2010 Macbook Pros don't have Thunderbolt. They have a visibly-identical mini-Displayport connector, but that's just for displays. If you look at the small icon next to the port, a Displayport icon is square, a Thunderbolt icon is a lightning flash.

  • HELP. new hard drive not recognized

    HELP!
guys, i badly need your help. i've been searching all over the internet and reading so many user groups already to search for answers to no avail.
I bought a new Western Digital 160GB Scorpio SATA hard drive. I wanted to upgrade my Macbook which only has 80GB as of now.
I cannot seem to install Mac OS X on it. Here's the problem:
    1. it is recognized as "Media" with 0 bytes capacity which I am really surprised why it's like that
    2. PARTITION: partition fails and i receive an error message saying that the "Device is not configured"
    3. ERASING: i also tried erasing it but it also fails; the message reads "The selected disk does not have enough capacity"
i really don't know what seems to be the problem. i can't use it, can't even format it, not partition it.
so now it's just sitting on my desk, useless. i want to use it badly though.
can someone help me please? thanks.

    Hi Paoj
You don't say if you have found that the new HD is Fat32 or not, so I will proceed assuming that it is FAT32. I will also proceed on the basis that there was nothing on the new drive already that you needed to keep or can't download.
    1) Open Disk Utility.
    2) Select your External Drive from the list presented
    3) Select the 'ERASE' tab then the "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" option in the 'Volume Format:' box. In the box below, give the drive a name if you want to.
No need to bother with the 'Options' button etc.
    4) Select "ERASE'
This should rewrite your new drive in HFS+ (Journaled) format.
Assuming the above has worked for you -
The next step is optional, but careful consideration is recommended at this point in time because one can't change one's mind, say, months later.
    1) Still in Disk Utility, select the 'PARTITION' tab.
    2) Under 'Volume Scheme:" choose however many partitions (extra hard drives) you consider appropriate.
For instance, I have an 500gb External Drive partitioned into two drives of about half that size. One I have for expansion and has a bootable version of Panther on it. The other is my backup drive.

  • Hard drive not recognized after a brand new replacement put in 2 weeks ago!

Basically, my MBP was having the symptoms of needed a new hard drive. It was taking abnormal amounts to think and load thinks when it started up (only part of the time). I cleared all the software off of it and reloaded Mac OS just to be sure it wasnt a software issue. Apple took my computer and replaced the hard drive about 2 weeks ago (90gb, 7200 rpm). By the way the MBP is a C2D with 2 gb ram.
Immediately after getting my computer back it seemed to work fine. It has been about a week and a half since I got it back and last night trouble started. First, it wouldnt boot up all the time (id get the flashing question mark on the folder). I checked startup disk and booted it that way, no results. When it did start up, it would lock up shortly after when using applications such as safari. I then booted it to the system disk and performed the first aid functions on the disk... no results. And now, the next morning, when i boot to the disk, the hard drive itself is not even recognized under disk utility??? So basically, I cant reload OS again because I cant see the installation disk. Is this a a hardware issue even though I just replaced the hard drive?
    what do i do??

    Hi MBPrunner;
It appears you have the misfortune of infant mortality whereby a bring new part fails in a short period of time. This does happen. I have seen it numerous time in my years of server support at IBM. My suggestion is take it back it back to Apple with all of your paperwork. They should make good on it.

  • PLEASE HELP!- New internal hard drive not recognizing

I have a MacBook pro unibody, purchased October 2008, 250 GB, 2.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM. I bought a new hard drove from OWC, which is 750 GB. I followed all I strychnine from their website by installing osx again on the new drive, and transferrin data and updating the programs. when I checked the hard drive to see if the files were all there, they were. but once I installed in in the MacBook, and turned on, a blue screen with a flashing blue folder and a white question mark popped up. what did I do wrong???

Restart holding down the Option key, the system may not know the new drive is your start-up drive. Select the drive and once OS X is up go to System Preferences-Startup Disk and choose the internal drive.
If it still doesn't start then you made an error somewhere. The correct process would be to put the new drive in an enclosure and format it first to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then using using SuperDuper or CCC clone your old drive to the new drive, once that has been done swap the drives and you should be done.

  • New x1 carbon: portable hard drive not recognized

    Hi everyone,
I found this issue really annoying, let me show you the detail
1.Both usb ports work well after I reset my computer.(USB flash drive or USB portable hard drive can be used at anytime)
2.After I installed all the drivers provided on the website, this issue came out
3.If you plug in the USB flash drive, both ports work well at anytime
4.If you plug in the USB hard drive, most of the time system cannot recognize it
5.If you plug in the USB hard drive right after restart, the system will recognize it, but after a while, it can't
6.One interesting fact: if you plug in a USB falsh drive first, then unplug and plug in the hard drive, the hard drive then can be recognized...And the other unused USB port will not recognize anything...
7.When the system cannot recognize my USB hard drive, you can hear the HDD is working but you cannot find this device in device manager, however, when you unplug it, there will be a warning tone just like you unplug any other devices.
8.I have to restart Windows and plug the hard drive immediately to use it, or after few minutes Windows will not recognize it unless you restart again, sometimes I have to restart more the 3 times.
P.S. Both the USB ports are fine, both my flash drive and hard drive are fine, this issue happen right after I installed all the drivers. The hard drive is 2.5'' so do not need extra power. My BIOS is the latest. And I trived set the "USB 3.0 only" mode in the BIOS, doesn't work
    Thank you for your help!

  • New internal hard drive not recognized at all!

    Hello everybody!
I really need your help. I tried to upgrade my internal 120gb drive to a Western Digital wd2500bevs. But when I start my Macbook with the Leopard DVD neither the System Profiler nor the Disk Utilities Program recognize the drive for a possible installation. When I reinstall the old drive everything is back to normal and works perfectly.
This is what I already tried to fix the problem:
I took the drive into an external casing => it was recognized immediately
I then formatted it => no change after installing it into the Macbook again.
I cloned my system with CCC on the WD and then installed it => no system found.
I have another disk of this kind but the same problem and another 160gb Toshiba disk which is not recognized as well.
Please help me! I couldn't find help in German discussions yet so I hope anyone of you guys can help me.

You say the drive is "recognized" but your original post stated it was not present in Disk Utility. I'm puzzled. Have you attempted to partition and format the drive?
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

  • External hard drive not recognized on new macbook

we have an external harddrive that we used as the time machine for our previous imac. we just bought a macbook pro, and the harddrive is not recognized and does not show up on the sidebar. it is however shows up on disk utility but i dont know what to do with it/how to get files from my old time machine. please help! thanks

The hard drive will not show up on the sidebar or desktop unless Finder preferences are set to do that:
In Finder's General preference section, make sure "External disks" is checked in the list of things to show on the desktop if you want to see them there.
Likewise, in Finder's Sidebar preference section, make sure "External disks" is checked in the "DEVICES" section to see them automatically appear on the sidebar.
But you don't need to do either for the MBP to recognize the drive, or to get files from its Time Machine backup set. To do that, you should use the Time Machine "Star Wars" interface. Pondini's FAQ's (already mentioned) tell you how to do that. Tip 17 is particularly relevant.

  • Memory modules and hard drive not recognized

I removed and reinserted the factory installed Satellite L505D-LS5007 laptop hard drive and memory modules just as practice for installing a hard drive upgrade and an 8GB memory upgrade. The problem is obviously with the memory and not with the hard drive.
After the first practice try, one memory module was recognized. Also for a few seconds after the first practice try, I ran the PC with the battery installed, but no memory installed. I did not look in the User's Guide first to see that I should have removed the battery before removing the memory.
Now the System Indicator Lights for the HDD Activity and Memory Card Reader do not light up. The PC turns on and the display is solid black with no messages.
Before buying new memory modules, what possible ways might there be to get the PC to recognize the factory installed memory modules and hard drive again?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

When troubleshooting, I always change one variable at a time. I would hate to miss a solution by being in a hurry. In this case, you may have damaged either the RAM or the RAM slot. I would stick with the Toshiba specifications for the RAM, making sure it is the correct size, speed and type recommended. I also recommend that when you replace the RAM that both modules be from the same manufacturer, size, and specification. Try one RAM module in one slot and then the other. And then try both RAM modules in both slots. After the testing you should be able to figure if this is a RAM problem or a RAM slot problem.
In the case of hard drives, the real test is whether or not the Bios sees the hard drive. If the Bios doesn't see the hard drive, it's not going to work. The Bios should see the hard drive whether or not the hard drive is partitioned, formatted or has data on it. My experience has been that many Toshiba laptops will work fine with larger capacity hard drives provided they are the same speed in RPMs, have the same interfacing connection and physically the same size.
Again, prior to doing any work on your computer, make sure that both the AC power has been disconnected and the battery has been removed. Be careful out there. A blown repair job by a non-Toshiba tech is NOT covered under warranty.

  • External hard drive not recognized in Finder or Disk Utility

Two weeks ago, my 2007 black Macbook stopped recognizing the hard drive. I was told by some IT friends that the controller had likely failed and I needed to purchase a new laptop. I removed the hard drive and placed it into an enclosure (turning it into an external hard drive) and hooked it up to a new Macbook Pro which I purchased a couple days ago. The external hard drive did not show up in Finder or Disk Utility but the light on the enclosure was on and it was making a very soft whirring noise and got warm after a few minutes. I usually backed up the hard drive but, of course, hadn't done it in a couple of weeks before it died so everything I worked on in that time is lost to me at the moment. I'm trying to avoid paying tons of money for a data recovery service so any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

That whirring noise might be due to physical damage on the disk. I know data recovery services are costly but that remains only the solution for damaged HDD. You can get latest quotes on services from different dealers. Proceed only when your data is very important to be recovered.

  • Yoga 2 Pro Hard Drive not recognized

I got my Yoga 2 Pro as a Christmas present and have had issues with the computer recognizing the hard drive every time it boots up or enters sleep mode (and this is after the 1 initial boot up where I didn't have to enter the BIOS).  Not sure if this is a bios or hardware issue, but I can get it booted after entering the BIOS, changing various (seemingly random) settings (UFEI/Legacy support usually) to get the computer to even recognize that it has a hard drive installed at all.  Once it does boot, as long as it doesnt sleep or shut down, it'll continue to work, leading me to think this is some sort of BIOS issue.  Has anyone been able to resolve this issue without the hassle of returning it to Lenovo an getting a whole new one? The computer is great, when it boots up, but this is extremely disappointing/frustrating to have to enter the BIOS every single time I want to turn the computer on to use it!

  • X79A-GD45 Secondary Hard Drive Not Recognized

    Hi,
I actually had this problem from the very beginning when I bought it a year ago, but it wasn't such a big deal because I worked around it (I was needing to clone my hard drive - I made a back up on an external hard drive, removed the source drive, installed the new hard drive, and restored the backup to it). But, I'm in need of cloning my hard drive again, and it's very inconvenient to do it this way, especially its size has grown since. So, I'm hoping that I can find a solution. The problem is that, it just doesn't recognize an additional hard drive period. I've tried connecting it to a different SATA slot, no luck. I read some online suggestions about changing management setting (AHCI, IDE, RAID), no luck. It doesn't show up in Windows (not even under disk manager). It doesn't show up in Parted Magic. It doesn't show up in Acronis True Image bootable CD. So, I've concluded that it has to be something with the M.B.
I'd appreciate any help/suggestion. Thank you.

What OS are you using? HDD properly formatted? SATA II drive or SATA III? What ports have been tried? All SATA controllers in the BIOS enabled?
