New (well, refurb) iMac suddenly won't connect

One of my users got a refurb iMac 17" about 2-3 wks ago. This problem started 4 days ago.
In System Prefs>Network, the "Built-In Ethernet" shows a red button, then the whole "Built-In Ethernet" selection disappears for a second, then reappears. I was able to get this user up and running via Airport, which worked for 4 days, but now that is failing too (our wireless network only intermittently shows up on the list of available networks!)
Guessing a piece of network hardware in the machine has cratered..?

well there if the built in ethernet keeps diappearing from the system preferences then i am quite sure that it is an issue with the built in etehrnet but if you are able to see your airport icon on the toolbar then airport is working
so what i would suggest is try
-trashing /library/systemconfiguration
-power cycle(disconnect everything connected to the mac for 5 minutes and then reconnect them, power up mac)
-create new location from network preferences
-test
-if still same issue test the link status for en0 from network utility
-if it says not reported-ethernet port is dead take it to shop

My iMac suddenly no longer connects to wifi network when in KIOSK (username) mode, and only connects when as ADMINISTRATOR mode. Its strange because the iMac has been working fine in KIOSK mode for over a year until 2 days ago.

One of the memory cards was indeed faulty, and the other completely fine
Thanks very much for all your help!
Although there is one little thing that I've noticed. The iMac works properly, but I tried to software update to see if that may help my Minecraft sound issue (as I still don't think only having 2GB instead of 4GB would cause such a problem) but the software update application won't work. Running the "Software Update" from the apple menu on the toolbar gains no response, nothing happens. If I run the software update from  system preferences, the application icon appears for a second, then disappears (as in the blank app. icon, the blank canvas with the pencil, pen and ruler in the bottom right corner). It does this every time I try to run it. It did work when the computer was crashing, but this started when on one of the occasions I ran the app. while it was crashing. Since this occured during the crashes, and still occurs now, I'm wondering did something simlar happen minecraft, as it's sound disappeared during the crashes and is still gone now.
However, the computer is now working again without crashes, which is the main thing, thanks for helping me fix the issue
Edit: I would mark the topic as solved, but I'm unsure if this would lock the topic or something simlar, so I'd rather leave it open for any ideas regarding the software update and Minecraft issues I'm having

  • IMac suddenly can't connect to wireless!

My iMac suddenly refuses to connect to wireless! It worked fine before.
Tried everything including resetting the wireless router.
It always said that my password is invalid... My password is correct!
    Can anybody help me? Thanks!

I'm having the same problem.  I have a time machine that I use for my wireless router.  I connect wirelessly using my Macbook Air.  It has worked fine for months.  Today, about 4 hours ago, my wireless connection stopped working.  When I connect via ethernet directly, it works.  I know it's not my router, because I also tried a spare Airport Express and that doesn't work either.  I'm going to try restoring the time machine to its factory settings and configure it from scratch to see if that works.  I'll post back with the results.

  • G4 suddenly won't connect to internet

My g4 running 10.5.7 suddenly won't connect to the internet. It connects to the wireless network fine, but says it isn't connected to the internet. MAc mini and macbook pro (both running 10.4.11) and iPod touch all connect to network and internet without any problem. The g4 was working fine, then suddenly couldn't connect.

    More info....
Even though I've got 4 airport bars, when I go to airport utility on the G4, no wireless devices show up. All devices appear in AP utility on other machines.

  • Safari and Entourage suddenly won't connect, or stay connected (dial-up)

Help! (Please note that this is a question about a MacBook; ignore "Powerbook G4" signature).
The Safari and Entourage applications on my new MacBook, which is on an Apple USB external dial-up modem (NOT wireless or Ethernet), have suddenly stopped connecting. Manifestations:
    (1) Safari: When Safari is opened, it connects normally via dial-up to the start page (Google), but then either won't connect to the next website or goes to a new website, then disconnects after a minute or two. The error message then appears: "You are not connected to the Internet. Safari can't open the page [website address] because your computer isn't connected."
    (2) Entourage: After this problem recurred several times, I decided to test Entourage, which had been working fine. I connected manually to the Internet, and with the connection holding, I tried to send a test message to myself. I then got the error message, "Your Mac OS Network Preferences are not configured to allow automatic connections" (they were, and anyway, the computer was already connected). The computer then disconnected and I got the message "The computer has disconnected because the other side is not responding."
I've tried the following, without success: (1) Restarting. (2) Resetting Safari. (3) When neither helped, I double-checked my network configurations, as well as my account settings in Entourage, and they all seemed okay. However, each time I typed the correct password into the network configurations box, it added about 8 additional dots as soon as I checked "Apply." (I've been told that this is a security feature, but it hasn't happened in the past.)
I then checked the settings using the Apple Network Diagnostics program that Safari offers. ND verified that the modem, modem settings, and ISP settings were okay, but that "Network Settings failed," "Internet failed," and "Server failed." Since the network settings looked right, I don't know what, if anything, this means, or whether the problem comes from something else.
Thanks for any suggestions anyone has.

Mandita 3 and Virtual Canary: Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. If you're still tuning in, in my case the problem of random disconnects on the USB external modem seems to have been resolved by simply switching USB ports on the MacBook.
I talked yesterday to an AppleCare "product specialist"--ie, a level 2 techie--whom I had requested to take me through an Archive and Install of OS 10.4.6 to downgrade from the 10.4.7 upgrade I had done, which I thought was causing the problem because the kernel panics (recorded in my computer's log) began happening right after that.
He suggested that we first try the simple expedient of switching to the other port--he said that he had had this problem several times on his own computer with other USB devices, and that had done the trick; if it didn't work, we could still do the Archive and Install, but he said that "Some USB devices just turn out to be incompatible with one or the other port; it's just quirky."
I've been testing the machine for a couple of hours and the switch seems to have taken care of the problem (to double-check, I went back to the first port once and the random disconnects after 2-5 minutes began happening again).
I've only been testing the machine for a short time, so I can't say for sure that this works. Also, even if it does work, I'm going to call my authorized repair place and ask if the "defective" port can be repaired or replaced--it was working fine for the first 6 weeks that I had the machine, so presumably the one that still works fine could develop an allergy to the external modem, too.
Hope this information is of use to you.

  • Brand New 5th Gen iPod Touch Won't Connect to Wifi

I just got a brand new 5th gen iPod Touch and expected to have a fun night of playing with it, but instead I was trying to figure out why it won't connect to my network. Not a good introduction to a product.
Here is the related info and troubleshooting steps I've already tried:
    - It will not connect to my wifi network
    - The iPod Touch says "Unable to join the network [network name]" when I try to connect to my network (as opposed to "Could not find the network [network name]" when it is not the correct network name)
    - I was able to connect to a random unsecure network nearby
    - Of course I power cycled my router and modem to reset them
    - My wireless router does not broadcast its SSID; I made it broadcast it and it still didn't connect
    - My network is password protected. I tried changing the security type, as well as turning the password off altogether, but nothing worked
    - My wireless router is a Netgear WGT624 v3
    - Even though it's brand new, I tried resetting the iPod Touch and the network settings
Does anyone have any tips or solutions for this?
I wasn't able to find other people with this problem, at least not with solutions that I haven't tried. It's really frustrating not being able to connect to the internet with my new device.
I will point out that my Android phone connected to my wifi network on the first try with no problems.
    Thanks

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
iOS: How to back up your data and set up as a new device
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
What security are yo using with the router?
Try as a test setting the router security to None.

  • Mini Mac suddenly won't connect to the net.

    Hello,
Didn't realise you guys existed until I was pointed in you direction so I'm hoping you might be able to help.
I started this thread http://forums.seloc.org/viewthread.php?tid=71654 on another forum I use. It has all the details of my problem. If there is anything I should be doing it would be great If you could point me in the right direction.
    Thanks in advance
    Karl

Sorry for that, I've cut and pasted the different parts that I wrote.....
I've been running a mini mac for nearly a year now and all's been well up until last friday. I use Tiscali's cheapo broadband package and that has been problem free until the mac suddenly decided that it can't connect last Friday.
It's set up so that it automatically tells you when the adsl modem is connected. You can then check the modem and it is running fine. If I then try and open an internet page it's saying that the internet isn't conected. If I open internet connect and click for it to connect then it just say that it is idle and won't do anything different. When you look at the connection log it says that a pipe is broken?? and that's why it won't connect.
If I look at the system information then it says that ethernet (en1) is enabeld but the cable isn't connected. Tried everything I can think of but it hasn't helped. Contacted apple but they want £35 to try and talk me through the problem. Tried Tiscali but all there suggestions have made no difference.
I'm now using a six year old PC that's taken the best part of a week to get me online, I'm guessing the connection is OK as it's working on this PC but why isn't it working on the mac? Any advice will be genuinely appreciated
Tried unplugging/ re attaching all the cables but it made no difference. I'm using the same modem and cables at the moment with this dodgy old PC so I'm guessing there isn't anything wrong with them.
I do the repair permissions thing so but hasn't seemed to help.
It's a Mini Mac running OS 10.3.9 ( I think ) I use Tiscali via a phone filter and then into a sagem modem (whatever they give you). The modem is connected to the mac via a usb cable.
I've tried a different cable, and the modem is working Ok with this PC. So It's not Tiscali's end.
I've jut spent the last hour messing around with the mac but it's making no difference. The Mac knows that the USB modem is connected but it won't connect to the net. I just tried to use tiscali's DNS number but I can't seem to sort it, I even tried pinging that number but nothing is coming back. It was set up to use ethernet adaptor (en1) and then you just clicked on a little icon in the top bar and it would connect to the net.
Is there any way to wipe all the settings and try to get it going from scratch. Would it work if I bought a router and plugged it straight into the mac without a modem? There is a firewire connection on the back.
If I look back it says something about a broken pipe. On the network set up screen it says that the cable isn't connected to (en1), so I'm guessing that may be why it not getting in contact with the net?
I've now had suggestions to ditch the modem and buy a router?? Is there anything I should looking for in particular?
    Thanks again.

  • My new iPod Touch (4th gen) Won't Connect To My Home Wireless Network

    Hi Out There,
I just recieved my new iPod Touch yesterday, inputed my SSID (Network Name), security type WPA2 and password key and It won't connect. Can anyone tell me if I have to do anything else like fill in all the other fields like IP address, mac address, subnet mask, default gateway or anything else like that or should it have connected with the info i provide as I feel this is the sufficient enough information for it to connect but as far as those other fields that I've mentioned does it auto-fill in those other fields when after it connects? Cannot get on.
    Thanks for your responses

Finally figured it out and Apple doesn't even mention this in their article. I did what some other guy did. I took the Touch's physical address or (Mac address as they often refer to it and put the mac address of the Touch in my router's mac address filter list and "Bang" the internet came right on. Problem solved.

  • My ipad mini suddenly won't connect to wifi

My iPad mini is 2 years old.  Today it won't connect to the wifi at all.  I've tried shutting it off and turning it back on.  Then I go to wifi settings, and it shows my network and asks for password.  I know I'm entering the password correctly, but it says *incorrect password*.  I've tried resetting the ipad, I've tried resetting the network, I've tried closing out all apps, turning the ipad off and on, etc.  My laptop is connected and my smart phone is connected, so that's not the issue.  I don't know why the ipad is telling me the password is incorrect!  What can I do?  Any help would be appreciated!
PS - I have a brand new iPad mini here for my son for Christmas.  I'd rather not have to give it to him today but I'm about ready to!

As of yesterday I have the same issue with an iPad Mini bought in November 2012. I have tried resetting the network settings - no good. I have done an entire factory reset - no good. I have restored from previous backups - no good. I have reset to factory and set up as a new iPad - temporarily OK, then added some apps back - no wifi again.
Today I have been to an Apple Store who could connect the iPad to their wifi OK, came home, connected OK for a few minutes and then back to no wifi again.
It is not the router that is the problem, in the house are iPhone 6 plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 5S, iPad Air, Macbook Air, Apple TVs, and other bits of kit that are all successfully connecting. All iOS devices are on 8.1.2.
This problem has effectively bricked my iPad mini... very not happy!!!

  • Ipad mini suddenly won't connect

My mini with retinal display has worked flawlessly since Xmas.  Today it lost connection and will not reconnect.  In General Settings the network (home) is there, but will not connect.  I have turned off router and mini, turned them back on at the same time and at different times without any resolution to this problem.  Any suggestions?  IOS 7.1.2  Model ME276LL/A

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at
    http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • IMac G3 won't connect to wireless network

We recently bought an Airport wireless card and adaptor, we fitted it into the G3 today and it won't connect to the network. After we type in the password this message appears " There was an error joining the AirPort network", when we go into system profile under "Wireless Card Locale". It says USA, we live in the UK could this be a problem? We bought the card via eBay from china.
And if it helps the G3 is running OS X 10.3.2, we have an Airport Express base station and our other macs connect to it ok.

Yes, it very well could. Different regions/countries have different rules regarding which radio frequencies are available for unlicensed use, such as wireless products. If you have a card for the US, and you're in the UK, they very well could be trying to use different frequency ranges and thus unable to connect.
Of course another, simpler, possibility is that you selected the wrong kind of wireless encryption. You should be using at least WPA, WEP is about the same as no encryption at all. I don't recall if 10.3 was ever updated to support WPA2 or not. If it does, once you get things all sorted out, if your router also supports WPA2, that'd be your best bet.
For the future, you might want to avoid buying things off ebay like that. I know that it's not exactly like you can just pop round to the nearest electronics store and pick up one of these things, but you're going to have to accept the possibility that you were sold the wrong part and that money is now gone. You're probably lucky the part wasn't some cheap counterfeit knockoff that caused some kind of internal damage when connected. There's a lot of enterprising ebay sellers in China who like to go dumpster diving at big manufacturing plants. Finding parts that were discarded for failing QA testing, and selling them on ebay to people who only care about finding the lowest possible price.

  • I haven't dropped or damaged my Ipod, but it suddenly won't connect to the comp. to charge. Anybody help?

One day my Ipod just wouldn't charge for some reason. I got my daughters cord to see if there was something wrong with mine, but it still wouldn't charge. A couple days later, I was wiggling the cord and it connected and charged, and when I disconnected it, the date and time were set back to 2000. It connects when it wants to and I haven't been able to charge it now for a week because it won't connect again. Any ideas would be helpful. Could there maybe be moisture in it that would cause that to happen? Please help!!

Moisture? Maybe. Something wrong with the USB connector? Definitely.
Hopefully you're still covered by AppleCare and it's not a moisture issue.
If it is moisture or AppleCare has expired, then:
