New White Macbook Hard Drive won't boot

Ok, so I purchased a new 500gb internal drive for my friends white intel macbook. I wasn't able to format it using her mac, so I booted hers in target mode and with my macbook was able to format and instal OS X...When I restarted her mac it still had the circle with the line. So I booted hers again in target, her drive mounted on my desktop as normal. Then I restarted my mac with her drive and my mac Booted up just fine with her drive. So I can boot my mac with my drive, boot my mac with her drive in target mode, but I can't boot her mac with her drive.
Two things, S.M.A.R.T. is not verified on her drive but I think it might be the volume I'm looking at, the other is that since her drive was formatted with my mac using firewire it might not see it as a internal drive on her machine. I've done this before but not using another computer to do the install. It was pretty straight forward so not sure where I messed up. Any help would be awesome, an

Which are the two Macs involved? Often you can't do an Target Mode install unless the two machines are nearly identical.

Because her DVD drive doesn't work?
If you have a .dmg of the installer you could restore it to a thumb drive and boot from that.

So did you erase that new drive and partition it using GUID partitioning scheme?

So this would be when your machine is booted from her drive?

MAC PRO HARD DRIVE won't boot

HARD DRIVE won't boot past APPLE ICON, grey spinning wheel on grey screen. Tried using install discs, no go past the icon.
Replace small battery inside? replace chips? Logic board replace as last resort. Can't take it away from work at this point to an apple tech.
Had just installed updates to snow leopard and was successful...but went to restart it...and this crap happened.

I'll try that tomorrow. Thinking it could also be:
1) The PRAMM battery. found info on that they can wear out close to 5 years. This MAC PRO is close to that now. And I use a lot of power on it.
2) MAC PRO is plugged into a SURGE PROTECTOR, instead of right into the wall outlet.
3) Been doing a lot of FORCE QUITS and HARD BOOT -- unplugging it directly when it wouldn't shut down soon enough -- lately this past year.
I just assumed that this MAC PRO with the XEON QUAD CORE etc., was a heavy duty enough NLE,
that i wouldn't have these problems. It's not fully loaded with all the chips it can carry...and I don't have near enough external terabyte hard drives for storing video and audio files to edit. I've been storing wayyy too much
on the internal hard dives and just have to stop that.
I noticed these past few days that much of the LETTERING for hard drive icons and folders' titles
were starting to look in OVERLAPPING of the lettering. That was my first hint that something was up.

My clone external hard drive won't boot - start up?

I am selling my MacPro and need to clone its system drive for the new lap top I will buy soon. So I bought a new external 2TB HDD from OWC. I have found that this external HDD will not boot up, even though it says it is bootable, and appears in the Start Up prefs when I select it. It sppears on the desktop, doesn't make any weird clicking noises as well.
I am using 10.6.8 OS X. The 2TB HDD has two partitions (created with DU), one is bootable (Mac OS X extended journaled), and the other is a regular HDD space for media etc. It is GUID. It has "Ownership" checked in the info box.
I used CCC 3.4.4 and since this is 'hopefully' a one time deal, selected the 'Delete anything that doesn't exist on the source' setting. I cloned my system drive to the bootable space and had no problems with the transfer. Plenty of space to write all the files. I even made sure everything was checked in the 'source' window that a system drive might need. Everything was checked.
I spoke with a representive at the OWC Sales company and checked that this HDD can be used as a bootable drive.
I checked the connections: with external HDD with FW800, and Sata connectors. I have checked it with my Mac Book Pro as well. Same result. No boot.
I really don't understand why this drive won't boot, since everything looks correct.
Does anyone have any thoughts, suggestions, ideas for fixing this issue?

Not sure if you managed to get this issue resolved yet Marcus, but I too have a similar problem:
Currently I'm upgrading from Leopard to Lion (via Snow Leopard) on both an iMac and MacBook Pro (both Intel), but before I proceed with the OSX upgrade I wanted to back everything up. Thus far I have partitioned an external firewire drive (G Drive - one that is bootable), and cloned each machine using Carbon Copy Cloner to it's own partition (both GUID). There is plenty of space left over on each partition.
The issue - I can boot the OS X from the external drive on the MacBook Pro but not on the iMac.
When I restart and hold down Option on the iMac the only drive that appears is the HDD, not the other two selectable drives that are visible if I boot up on the MacBook Pro. On the iMac in System Prefs > Startup Disc I can see all 3 drives but when I select it and restart, the machine freezes on the grey loading screen and goes no further.
Not that it should make a difference, but there is a 3rd partition on the external drive that is currently empty (for extra storage).
Any help is greatly appreciated - I can't find any relevant answers elsewhere. Thanks,

New hard drive won't boot!

I have an iBook, and the hard drive recently broke. First I installed os x on my external firewire hard drive, but the iBook wouldn't boot off of it (it's a maxtor onetouch drive). I got another hard drive, and using the installer (for panther), I formatted the drive, and installed os x on it. However, the iBook won't boot off of the drive. What is wrong? Is it more serious than just the hard drive?

Well I just tried to boot off of the external hard drive (which is a Maxtor Onetouch firewire drive), while I didn't have an operational hard drive. However now that the replacement drive doesn't work as well (which I am more concerned about), I am wondering whether it is a more serious issue, or not. When I took it apart, I didn't see a logic board connector as in http://www.sterpin.net/uk/ddibookg4uk.htm (picture 43). It boots the installation cd fine, so I assume that there is not a problem with the logic board? The drive I purchased was completely empty, and I am wondering whether the boot part of the partition is wrong?
In disk utilities (in the installer), it does not see the new internal drive. I have tried to start up holding the option key, but it only has a screen with two buttons, and that ticking clock as a cursor.

Pavilion dv6t new hard drive won't boot after OS install

Hello, I have a HP Pavilion dv6t-3000 and the hard drive went bad and I just ordered a new one with basically the same capabilities. BIOS recognizes it because I can run the hard disk test and because the HP Recovery disc's successfully load and install on the hard drive. But once the recovery disc's finish the install and restart I get the error "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". The only thing I can think of is the hard drive is not compatible or something needs to be configured in the BIOS, but it is still recognized and still gets Windows 7 Home Premium installed using the recover disc's so in my mind that eliminates that problem.
Is there something I am missing or something else that needs to be done?

New SCSI Hard Drive Won't Boot

Hello,
I have a problem. My original SCSI drive died on me and I took it out and converted over to only ATA drives. Ever since I did that, my computer has always been a bit lagging. Slow. Not too fast. Anyway, I bought another SCSI drive and I'm trying to use that as my boot drive. I used Carbon Copy Cloner and checked "make bootable" in the preferences, but for some reason my computer just won't boot from it. I've formatted it and it shows up on my desktop, but it won't boot. Start. Make OS go boom boom. I would appreciate any help I could get. Thanks in advance.

A couple of things. I check my system profiler and I couldn't find out what kind of SCSI card I have. I even opened up my machine and there wasn't any writing on it. So how do I find out what type of card I have? My other question is if the same card worked for the SCSI drive I had before, why won't it work on the new drive. I've set it as the master at the end of the SCSI cord and like I said I used CCC. The drive shows up on my desktop but won't boot. Should I try loading OS from disks instead of using CCC?

I bought this laptop 14 months ago, last month the laptop refused to boot. It would say:
Isolinux disk error 05, ax4250, drive 9f
Boot failed
Often times on boot it would just show the black screen with a blinking underscore.
I tried all my known methods and nothing so I took it to a couple of shops. Both said that the hard drive was beyond repairable and not recoverable.
So I bought a new hard drive, installed it with the Toshiba recovery media. The recovery and install on new and drive went well. Had to restart, and upon restart, the original problem came up again- black screen with blinking underscore. I am unable to boot up. Any suggestions?

Since the late 2009 iMacs came out, replacing the hard drive has caused the internal Hard Drive Fan to start running at around 6000RPM.
This is due to Apple replacing the external Hard Drive temperature sensor with a proprietary firmware and using the drives internal sensor.
Replacement drives do not contain the firmware to deliver temperature data on the temperature sensor cable.
When the iMac does not receive a good signal from the hard drive it puts the fan at full speed to protect the drive.
If you replace your drive, your iMac will initially seem fine, but soon the fan will begin to speed up to full speed. Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) will have a temporary effect, but again the fan will speed up.
Fixes people have used in the past included:
Using smcFanControl and the terminal to set a MAX speed for the fan and writing scripts to start this after every sleep/restart.
Shorting the temperature sensor cable (Not a possibility on 2011 iMacs) this tricks the iMac into thinking the drives temperature is very low, hence slow fan speed.
Both these fixes are less then perfect and leave the drive in a dangerous situation with no protection from overheating.
Another option people try is other Fan Control software. These programs will not work for this particular issue as they often only control the base speed, and if they do control the fans actual speed they rely on the temperature reported by the sensor which is now incorrect.

HDD Fan Control works to fix this issue by reading the drives internal temperature using the S.M.A.R.T protocol and set the fans actual speed to a value good to protect the drive.
It runs at startup and continually to always control the fan correctly, prevent the loud fan noise and protect the drive from overheating

TS1367 SSD Replacement Hard Drive won't boot on my Macbook Pro; Any ideas why?

I recently replaced my hard drive for my Macbook pro. I built a bootable SSD drive in a SATA/USB caddy, which works perfectly until I install it in my laptop where it will not boot. Has anyone got any ideas why this might be the case?

What model MBP? (exactly)
What model SSD?
How did oyu test it in the caddy? Most dont work on bridges. Min didnt.
and..why is this is the xserve section?

Internal Hard Drive Won't Boot or Mount

I don't know if this is the right forum for this but...
My 24" iMac running 10.5.2 won't start up. Meaning I can't get past the grey screen. I fsck the disk in single user mode and got back "invalid nobe structure (4,19621)" and repairs failed, then quickly shut down. As I understand it the (4,19621) means that the file with catalog node ID 19621 in the Catalog B-Tree portion of the disk directory has an invalid extent entry. I might be wrong here. If any knows how to correct that problem that would be helpful. But thats not the real problem.
I should add I tried to boot from the install DVD and repair the disk with disk utility and it would not repair the disk either.
Disk Utility recognizes the disk as "232.9 GB AAPL Firewire Target Media" and thats all while in target disk mode.
The real problem is the disk won't mount in firewire target disk mode. I would like to try to recover some of the fills that I haven't backed up mainly in my documents folder or repair this problem.
I am going to install (well not me) a new hard drive Monday and have a fresh and new system but in the mean time I would like to try to recover some of my files if possible.
I should add the one time it did mount, all the folders were there but none of the files. And it gave no worrying. I checked the S.M.A.R.T. status and the start up volume yesterday and got the report the disks seems to be okay.
Any help in getting the disk to mount in firewire target disk mode to repair and/or recover some files would help.

DW never got to that point if thats what you are talking about nor did it get past "Inspecting disk" and Step 1: Searching entire disk in final rescue attempt". After hours of the beach ball spinning.
I am not within my apple care 3 years time frame. When they replace the hard drive tomorrow they said they might be able to recover some of my data in my Users folder.
Do you think that is possible?
That is more what I am worried about at this point. All of my important files have been back up there are just a few that weren't.

New larger, copied hard drive won't start up Mac Pro

I have a 250 GB hard drive that is almost full. I copied this drive onto a 1TB drive using disk utility.
(I have a 1TB drive in bay 2 and 1TB in bay 3 set up as a RAID 0). I tried to select this new larger drive as my start-up disk and I get a grey screen with "cannot find the driver for this platform" amongst other comments. I switched the new drive over to bay 1 with the same results. I tried selecting this from system preferences>startup (.....it shows up as a choice to pick) and with holding down option while starting up (shows up there too).

With internal drives, you don't need to worry or manually change format option.
If you click on the raw unformatted drives (WDxxxx etc) it will do everything for you.
Clicking on the drive (not the volume) will show in the status field at the bottom.
Click on WDxxxx and going to the PARTITIONS tab and a second window to change it from the DEFAULT GUID to another format (Master Boot Record for Windows, or older PPC format Apple Partition) use to be but isn't required or necessary.
I wish they would change ERASE for just VOLUMES and use INITIALIZE or FORMAT for when using ERASE to prepare a drive the first time. But no one listens.

New RAM and hard drive won't connect to computer. It's still making the beeping noise. Any ideas?

New FireWire external hard drive won't mount: conflict with iSight?

My parents just upgraded their eMac (1 GHz, 1GB RAM) to Leopard and bought an external FireWire hard drive to use Time Machine. We got the drive back to their place, powered it up, and plugged it in via the FireWire cable. Nothing. Wouldn't mount, didn't show up in System Profiler or Disk Utility. We tried a few more times but eventually gave up and figured the drive was DOA.
After I got home, I realized I should have had them unplug their iSight and try again. Is the FireWire bus on the eMac balky enough that this one additional device could have caused a conflict? They're not using any FireWire hubs: these were the only two devices on the bus.
If it does work without the cam attached, is there then any way to get the two devices to play nicely together afterward? They use the cam all the time for videochats with family, so I'm not about to tell them they have to give that up just to get more frequent backups.

Thanks for your speedy reply. How appalling that a computer with two FireWire ports can't use two FireWire devices! And it's Apple's own device that causes the conflict. I can't even think of an easy workaround, since the whole point of Time Machine is that the drive remains connected all the time.
I guess I could have them eject the drive, unplug it, and connect the iSight whenever they want to start a videochat. If the eMac only had USB 2.0, this would be moot! D'oh.
I'm getting ahead of myself, though -- I still have to go to their place and try the external drive without the iSight attached. Thanks again for confirming my suspicions.

Hard drive won't boot into OS but all files are intact

I recently installed Lion and when I did so I backed up my OS drive to two internal drives both of which were partioned--each back up drive has 2 partitions (one of each was for my back up OS).
Yesterday I wanted to restore my original OS drive to it's orignal state and did a restore from one of the back ups. I have done this several times with no problem. Yesterday, however, something went wrong and I cannot boot into either of my backups--I tried restoring to my original OS drive and I can't boot to it either. I know that all the files are still there because upon boot up if I use the option-command-shift-delete to get alternate boot device i can choose my back up and/or my main boot up drive to boot up. This is, however, the only way I can boot up. I fear that I corrupted some kind of boot file while creating the back ups when copying.
I erased my main OS drive and reinstalled Lion to it and it boots up--however, I have none of my files.
Ideally I would like to copy everything over from my backup drive to my new OS without the corrupted boot problem coming along with the files.
Is there a straightforward way to do this?

Disk Utility : Restore - look in Help, there really are good tips and How to tips and steps
Sometimes DU Restore has been a problem where SuperDuper would work.
Have more than one backup set and type.
Clones are bootable, and first thing to do after making one (and repair permissions and the drive even) is test and insure it is bootable. GUID partition table for one thing.
MA should work if it sees the volume as a system.
TriBackup is great for synching folders and files, even a system.
Maybe the change to Lion is why this time failed. You did try the Lion Recovery Mode (command-r) and read up Apple Support Lion.

Hard drive won't boot into safe mode

My mid 2010 Macbook Pro has suddenly decided to not boot up after installing BitDefender and running a scan.
I installed it on a whim when I saw minor malware that hijacked Safari, and decided to run a scan. While I was working on Photoshop, the scan must have finished because all of my windows disappeared and I was left with my desktop and the spinning gray loading at the bottom of my screen. I waited 20 minutes, realized it wasn't going anywhere and force shut down the Macbook by power button.
Now, I cannot successfully get it past the grey apple loading screen. Attempting to boot into safe mode still leaves it at the same screen. Tried to reset the PRAM, still can't get past the loading screen. I still have my OS disk, however it is Snow Leopard and my current is Mavericks and I'm unsure if it is a wise idea.

Use the original Snow Leopard installation disk and start the MBP as if you were going to reinstall the OSX. Early in the process you should see a menu bar on the top of the display. Click on UTILITIES and from the dropdown menu select Disk Utility. Run Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair. If it is not successful, the HDD will have to be replaced.

G5 hard drive won't boot/repair

so of course i am stupid and don't have the entire drive backed up.
history-computer acting a little funny(but still functioning well), so i run disc utility to repair permissions, verify disc etc.
ran disc utility and it said i needed to repair disc.
-boot form tiger dvd, it says it can't verify nor repair disc
-restart computer and nothing.....
try numerous things.....hardware test, single user mode, etc....can't get it to boot from disc nor repair from tiger dvd.
Any ideas about how to repair it?
I would also like to get my info off of it now, and have had luck to some extent. It has allowed me to access it via target disc and my other mac. So i have been transfering my most important things over to an external hd. slow going though. Any tips on how to just get the things i need over to the external. I also read in the apple pages that when starting from target mode you shouldn't have another external hd attached...anyone know why?
